A Diadem of Dead Stars
Phoenix Paladin
A Diadem of Dead Stars
Where my metalheads at

RIGHT HERE!!!!!! biggrin biggrin

Band I listen to:
-DragonForce
-Gloryhammer
-Turisas
-Rhapsody of Fire
-Falconer
-Blind Guardian
-Hammerfall
-Kamelot
-Skillet
-Linkin Park (even though they aren't metal)
-Breaking Benjamin (some songs are bordering metal, but I love that band either way)

What about you? What are your favorite bands?

You big on power, then? C:
I used to listen to a lot of Dragonforce but they got a little...repetitive, and their newest album just didn't do it for me. EPM, Cry Thunder, Heroes of Our Time, Soldiers of the Wasteland are all great.
Kamelot is amazing. I'm biased towards Roy, but Tommy is doing pretty great trying to fill his shoes. Favourite from Tommy-era is probably Solitaire off Silverthorn, some of the new Haven tracks are pretty great too (and who doesn't love Alissa White-Gluz)?? From Roy I'd say Ghost Opera or The Black Halo (with The Fourth Legacy being a personal favourite).
Blind Guardian, Rhapsody and Hammerfall I've heard in passing and checked out briefly. Somehow I can belt out the chorus of Emerald Sword whenever I hear it though dramallama
I mostly listen to Melodeath and Atmospheric Black bands now. Topping the list are Be'lakor, Insomnium, Valtari, Omnium Gatherum, EToS and the like for MDM, A Diadem of Dead Stars, Basarabian Hills, Lustre, Mesarthim, Elderwind, Violet Cold, Ghost Bath, Echoes of the Moon and Starless Night for BM. Then there's the occasional miscellaneous Viking Metal band like Eluveitie, Falkenbach or Bathory and sometimes Nightwish. I'm still trying out Doom, DSBM and Gothic.

Edit: 4:30

Speaking of power metal (though I'm not terribly well-versed in the genre), do any of these hit the mark?
Cain's Offering
Stratovarius
Tyr
Powerwolf
Sabaton
Van Canto
Unleash the Archers
Keepin' the vox relatively clean for you ;3

I've actually hear of some of these before! biggrin Powerwolf and Sabaton are actually viking metal. I absolutely LOVE Powerwolf, but Sabaton's songs were always too dark for me because they're most/all based on real-life events. TYR sounds like a mix of both viking metal and power metal which is amazing, and now I want to listen to more of their music!! biggrin biggrin biggrin Van Canto is definitely power metal, and "If I die in Battle" heart heart heart As for Unleash the Archers, they're power metal as well, but I've heard a few of their songs before and I'm not a fan. For some reason I just couldn't ever find anything to like about them.

I find the term "Viking Metal" troublesome, as most people seem to use it to describe any metal with norse-themed lyrics, which can span anything from power to death to black, which are all very different genres. I mean, I wouldn't exactly recommend Amon Amarth or Falkenbach and Bathory to fans of Tyr, though the lyrics are quite similar.

As for my understanding of the term, it's heavily influenced by black metal and nordic folk melodies. That would rule out most of what I'd previously mentioned. That said, Tyr's oldest stuff is pretty black, from what I remember.

UtA is power/melodeath. I get that the vocals are an acquired taste - it did take me a while to accept them too. Mostly I just appreciate the power in Brittney's voice - that girl can sure belt out her vocals.

2016 seems to be shaping up to a good year for metal, though I haven't heard much from the power/symphonic side of things - I know Haven and Endless Forms Most Beautiful came out a while ago and the tours have happened (or are still in progress), so nothing from them. Still mad about missing the brilliant lineup on 70k tons of metal, though.

I'm mostly waiting for Grey Heavens (Omnium Gatherum), Still Innocence (Lustre), A Diadem of Dead Stars' release, and Transience (Shylmagoghnar). I'm decidedly not feeling too black-metally, but Fuath just premiered "I", and that was quite good.

I listen to a wide variety of music and a little bit of everything. The two genres I most likely listen to the least are country and rap.

Favorite bands included Panic at the Disco, Skillet, One republic, Fall out Boy, and many more.
