Harveer's hands twitched towards his blades. Resting at his hips as they were, it would only take him a moment to draw and defend. Was that a moment he could risk loosing though? Golden eyes narrowed, darting around the room just a little. There were many of the pinpricks around the room, crackling with the taint. The feeling of it made his skin crawl.

The pale angel's attention returned to the horned thing. It was accusing Alethea of murder? She wouldn't commit such an act unless it was tainted beyond cleansing. Alethea was one of the kindest squires he'd the privilege of knowing. At least, that was his own interpretation of her. Words of defense were on his tongue, only held back by a desire to not make a fool of himself. Genesis and Eligor were more than enough to speak with the tainted heathen. Harveer's words would only muck up the situation.

So three things caught Alethea's attention. First, the creature claimed this pit of death belonged to him, second, he made the ludicrous claim that the squires of the Holy Order of the Light would swear servitude to anything other than the great Guardians. And third, the foul, pungent stench finally registered to her senses. "How dare you even suggest such a foul act! The only fealty to be to sworn is to the Guardians. And you will submit to them."

She trusted that her fellow squires had her back.

It startled the young squire to see another of the six-legged critters sudden jut from the darkness. "They ..." Her eyes darted to the darkness wondering where 'they' may be hiding. The pink angel pointed her light sword towards the confident creature, illuminating the room further. It was now very obvious that they were not alone with this heathen. Many dark shadows stirred in the dim light. Then it finally became clear to her exactly how many dark hiding places there were in this room, and her heart skipped.

"We," she grit between her teeth, "don't murder. We save. We carry out the will of the Guardians to rid this island of evil." She dropped her light sword, snuffing the light surrounding the group. She readied Anguish, which still had the black ooze fresh on the blade. "We will save you, too, villain. We will make you atone for killing our comrades. Murderer."

Dante tried to keep his body looking loose and casual. Not that he wouldn't be ready to jump into a defensive stance if needed. But it wouldn't do to try and talk peaceably if they all looked ready for a fight. He glanced around. Alright, they all looked pretty ready for a fight. Still, he held his staff less like a weapon and more like a walking stick. For now.

He didn't like where this was going. He admired Genesis and Eligor for taking point and trying to be diplomatic with the furry youth. But when all those eyes appeared in the shadows, it sent a shiver up Dante's spine.

The energy in the room shifted. Suddenly they were on the defensive. He nodded as Alethea spoke; she vocalized his thoughts exactly. Dante wasn't one to pick a fight, but they'd already lost three of their brothers and sisters. He wasn't about to lose anymore, and he was tiring of the heretic's arrogance. He gripped his staff. The sooner they neutralized him and his...creatures...the sooner they could find their charges and get out. He glanced at Lailah. He'd take his cue from her.

Genesis' was quiet and her face stoic while the youthful creature mocked them. Such words didn't get to her, they just showed his immaturity. She was thankful that Eligor had added in an apology when he spoke up, since the creature had made a point of them 'barging in'.

As Alethea's sword lit up the room, exposing the new creatures, Genesis began to think very carefully on what words she would say next.

She was still set on being diplomatic, it was clear that this creature did not know anything of the hostages, Genesis believed that much. Being diplomatic would get them through here faster, and at less of a cost, then waging war against a teenager with an inflated ego and his minions.

Genesis didn't look to see who the tainted creature was pointing out, keeping her straight face. She didn't know what he was talking about, but they would have to tread very carefully if he had it in his pompous... crap.

She flinched internally as Alethea's voice echoed in the hall. Now was really not the time for conversions, yes loyalty to the guardians was important, but they would literally be wasting their time right now. With every word Alethea spoke, things just got worse. Genesis felt the other girl was usually pretty quiet and she chose now to speak up? There wasn't really anything Genesis could say to fix this now, having seen just a glimpse of this creature's hubris, a fight seemed imminent. She pulled out her sword, "I request that you let us through in peace to continue our search, unless you wish to lose more of your companions." One last attempt at a quick resolution, but she wasn't counting on it.

Though he was clearly still peeved, a hint of amusement tugged at Kerne's scowl in response to Alethea's verbal counter. Guardians? What a lame sounding title for a leader. As if that sounded like someone commanding respect and demanding service. Ha! Besides, he'd had enough of the servitude crap, so no thanks.

That did answer one question, however. These twits served some 'Guardians', eh? That meant he was just dealing with someone else's minions. Likely just following orders and unable to think for themselves.

"Is that what you call it then? Saving them? I'm pretty sure they don't want to be 'saved' by your blades and your sticks in that case. Doesn't matter what you call it to justify your actions when the truth remains the same." He hadn't missed the second part of what the pink one had shouted at him. She was going to make him pay. For killing their comrades.

Interesting.

Before he could continue that entertaining line of conversation, the brown and green female with the sword interrupted again. What's this? Dissension in the ranks? She seemed to want nothing more to do with conversation it seemed, instead making demands of him. Oh, a request, yes that was different.

Cocky intruders, weren't they?

He narrowed his gaze at Genesis as the room darkened with the disappearance of Alethea's glowing lance. "And I request that you get the hell out of my castle, if you'd like to prevent the same. Yes, I may have lost one of my servants, but how many have you lost? You said 'companions' earlier...how many? How many fewer are there of you than when you arrived here? Two? Three? Four or more? Haha, I'll have to send my pets out to clean up, I suppose. Can't leave those sorts of things lying about and rotting."

A loud wail emanated from behind the young squires. It was too difficult to discern if it was organic or not. Rocks and debris fell to the floor from the hinge of the giant door. It gave out a groan and started moving, inch by inch, scraping thick wood against rock with the slowest, unnerving sound ever made.

Before the doors completely shut, a small shape appeared, focusing into that of a pretty little barefoot girl. She stood behind the doors holding a large, weathered and cracked helmet, not unlike those the squires may have noticed scattered on the ground as they moved through the courtyard. She waved at them as the door closed. Any squire would have only spotted her for a split second before the door completely closed between them.

The doors are now closed behind the squires. There are only two other exit points in this Grand Hall. Two doors behind Kerne.

((Any squire that did not make it in to the room with the others is now locked out. This is the final chance for them in this competition to survive this chapter. If any squire has not responded by the conclusion of this chapter, they will not survive to move on to the next chapter.))

The longer they stood around bickering with the strange creature, the more antsy Lailah grew. This was a waste of time at this point. Clearly either the creature was being obstinate out of spite...or in an attempt to delay them here and keep them distracted from something else happening. The glowing eyes around her kept closing in and one daring little rat decided to start darting in, hissing and spitting and making swipes at one of her ankles. She glared in reply, unmoving, biding her time. She had learned her lesson about starting fights; the Guardians had been sure of that. She wouldn't leap to violence as the first thought; however, sometimes...there was no other choice. One's hand was forced.

A mistaken dart too close to her foot and the matted rat creature was sent squeaking and flailing through the air by a swift kick.

Dirty beasts.

The surprising realization that this creature had the bravado and gall to dare to speak down to them in such a manner nearly rendered Eligor speechless. Clearly, he had no idea who he was speaking to. Of course, if this were some poor, ignorant heathen, then how could he? Eligor still wasn't convinced on WHAT he was though.

He felt a surge of resolve at the sound of Alethea's strong words, and was about to add his support and suggest that they ignore this creature and move on...when the strange creature's mocking tone entered his ears and set a spark alight within him. How DARE he?!?

Grief still fresh from the loss of their comrades, Eligor felt righteous fury flare up within him at the suggestion of such disrespect. "You will hold your tongue, cur!" he snapped, pointing his staff accusingly as he stepped forward towards the long table. "You will not slander noble warriors in such a way! You will silence your disrespect or we will do it for you!" Turning back towards the group of Squires, he gave Katya and Lailah a nod so that they would continue watching the flanks. "Everyone, let's move on. There's nothing more for us here. We have more important business. Let's go."

A muffled curse answered Eligor's call from the right as the horrible scraping noise drowned out any other conversation. Lailah had caught the flash of movement from the door, the brief glimpse of the child outside, and now it was screeching shut. That girl...she wasn't one of these creatures; she hadn't got a great look at her, but she seemed mostly normal, if out of place in these surroundings. Could that have been the kidnapped child? With little more time to think about it, the door slammed shut and the falling debris bounced over the stone floor.

Sneering, Lailah weighed this development before calling to the other Squires. "If we just lost our way back, the only way left is forward," she warned in a low voice, fixing her eyes on the dark furred creature with horns. She had no forgotten all of the rat creatures either and her grip tightened on her blades until her knuckles paled. Could they get the door open again? Or did they push on, past the creature, deeper into the keep? If he was hiding something or stalling them, then perhaps they should keep going? Find out just what it was he was trying to keep them from.

Alethea was looking at the situation with tunnel vision. The boy didn't deny he was the one to kill Infernos, Angus or Elda. This only enraged the pink angel further. Maybe it was the Taint affecting her emotions, but she wanted blood for blood. She wanted this cocky b*****d to pay for what he did. The Guardians could forgive her for this one act of violence right? She saved the squirrel creature from the Taint by putting him out of his misery. Clearly this boy is suffering from madness and is a threat to himself and others. She is saving the rest of her friends. Being fully tainted is obviously a fate worse than death.

She would save this boy. That is how she would beg for forgiveness.

Light let my aim be true.

Alethea pulled Anguish back and took one step forward. With her back arched, and her shoulders back, she put all of her strength into launching her ranseur towards the target. She has done this move thousands of times, and has built the muscle and strength to create the inertia required to send the hefty weapon forward. Before it left her fingertips, she cast Swift Justice. This provided a minimal speed boost for launch and provided her with the boost she needed to retrieve her ranseur after hitting her target. This move was carefully calculated.

The blood-tempered steel ranseur hit the thick old wood chair behind the boy, nearly splitting it.

The pink squire hopped on the table and sprinted the length. She was there just as Anguish hit the aged wood behind the blue b*****d. She knew she could do this in just a blink of an eye. When she was looking back towards the group, she saw the little girl in the doorway, and the doors slowly closing. It distracted her enough that she tripped up and hesitated long enough for her spell to wear off. She scrambled, fumbling with her polearm, "Noooo!"

Glaring. He'd been reduced to glaring at this fuzz-ball that seemed to think he ruled this tainted hell hole. If Harveer could have narrowed his eyes any more he'd be looking through his eyelids he was so angry at this beast. This, this thing right in front of them was the reason The Guardians needed them. To stop things like this heretic from ever spreading their vile ideas about. Tainting the minds of the young ones. Taking the lives of innocents, of those who only thought to serve and protect.

Whatever this blue thing was, it most certainly wasn't apologetic for the deaths it caused. And he was convinced that this fuzz bucket was the reason he'd lost three friends that day, and any more that might fall in their mission. His vision was all but red by now, until Eligor's words broke the tension in his head. The taint, it had to have been getting to him. "He's not worth it." Harveer stated, relaxing his pose for a half second. It was then he noticed Alethea's quick spell work and the throwing of her ranseur.

A split second of thought, if someone didn't accompany her into this, she might die. Trained to act as one, Harveer's tonfas were drawn. While Alethea had the advantage of surprise and speed, he would act as a counter measure to hers. If she couldn't succeed in this. Mind steeled against thoughts, just actions. Just actions, pay attention to the enemy's movements, your companion's movements. The pale angel raced behind the one winged beauty, not nearly as fast as she. A single tonfa raised to the estimated neck level of the tainted fuzzball, the other in a more defensive position. One to attack, kill, maim, cleanse, one to prevent a well placed sharp thing to his gut.

Clarux had honestly not been paying attention to the blue beast much, her attention more focused on other sounds. She didn't like the noise, it borred into her skull and made her shiver. And then the sound became worse. Oh Guardians was it horrid, the scraping against the wood, the loud wail, the path behind them blocked. Clarux didn't even see the girl, her mind too engrossed on the awful sounds.

Now they only had two ways out, and it was behind the blue fellow. She clutched her spear, eyes narrowing. She didn't know what he was capable of doing, and she didn't like that. No, she had to wait and see at least a bit before striking, that way she had a better understanding on how to avoid what he threw back at her.

As the entrance closed behind them, Katya reflexively turned and jog-flapped two or three steps toward the groaning door before realizing the futility of it. At the back of her mind she wondered if that single, pretty little girl had closed the heavy, seizied door by herself- or if something quite powerful had done it for her. Either possibility was unnerving, but by this point nothing was off the table, and it almost was par for the course the way things were going.

Her gaze snapped back toward the runt on the chair- the runt was beginning to ramble again, his tone moving from annoying to infuriating, but Katya refused to be taken into any ruse. It was Eligor and Genesis' job to do the talking now. Instead she shuffled closer to Dante and refocused her attention to the strange creatures in the shadows. The threats seemed to be multiplying by the second, and their position seemed to be getting worse.

Katya tuned out Lord Fuzzy of the Slum Realm and leaned in toward Dante. Her words came rapidly but she was careful to not raise her voice enough to be heard beyond a few feet. "Dante, when this thing blows up- which it will, I know it- we'll have the option of backing up to the wall and hoping to wear down their numbers until they withdraw, or to charge and break their lines, get mobile again and regain the initiative." Of course the young flyer was in favour of not slugging it out from a static position, but in addition they had no idea just how many enemies they would have to end up facing. As much as possible they had to engage on their own terms. "I'm going to strike where their line is weakest. Would you be OK on your own holding this flank?"

It was at that moment that the sharp sound of Alethea's polearm striking wood caused Katya to squeak involuntarily. Despite everything, she hadn't expected one of the other squires to make the first move. Well then.
Her body drew into a familiar stance; wings spread wide, feet apart, bow drawn. She took aim at the blue tainted one, but did not fire. She held the shot, waiting to see if a more opportune or important target presented itself.

Heh, seems they didn't like his answer. Not his fault they didn't approve of his housekeeping methods. They shouldn't be leaving their trash about then. It seemed like they weren't going to be much fun to play with at this rate. They were just going to give up and go away? How disappointing. Ah well, at least they'd leave his minions alone...

One ear flicked towards the door, shortly before the horrible scraping noise ensued. His eyes narrowed, and he pursed his lips in thought, about to say something...

Instinct from growing up in the dark forest was not something to be ignored. When it practically screamed at him, he threw himself down and away from the incoming projectile. The ranseur cut through flesh as easily as air, eliciting a roar from Kerne as it opened his cheek and ear with searing pain. The squirrel creature on his shoulder had not fared so well. Cleanly separated from its body, the creature's tiny head rolled across the floor. The rest of its remains crumpled where they fell, discarded.

Having thrown himself towards safety, Kerne fell and twisted, landing on one knee and glaring back at the weapon that nearly split his throne in two. He whirled towards the thrower, the minion murderer, little more than a pink blur at the moment. That sight gave him a second's pause before the fury kicked in again. Snarling at her and the blue male who followed far slower behind, he roughly smeared the stream of blood running from his cheek with his forearm and lept up with whip at the ready. "b***h! You'll pay for that!" he snapped, lifting his fingers to his lips. A short, sharp whistle burst was followed by the sound of his whip cracking in Alethea's and Harveer's direction.

In the relative silence that followed, a vicious snarl echoed from the shadows where something stirred...something much larger than a mutated squirrel...

From the shadows, a beastly roar erupted and a lean shape moved like a blur to land in a crouch in front of the whip-wielding teenager. Lean, with a vaguely feline-like main body, little else about the creature seemed made of anything except the stuff of nightmares. Huge pincers jutted from the creature's jaws, replacing a normal mouth, and some sort of green fluid dripped from its gaping maw to the floor where it pooled and bubbled menacingly.

It balanced lightly on clawed legs, covered in a rough carapace. The segmented limbs had too many joints to resemble a feline and the way it shifted and swayed stirred uneasy feelings within one's core. It seemed ready to spring at a moment's notice. It was sturdier in frame than any equivalently scaled insect, with power in its tightly coiled stance. Most insects weren't the size of a mountain goat either.

The creature's head twitched minutely, its segmented eyes tracking the movements of the Squires. Its maw was wide open, a long, low hiss warning the foolish to stay away. Though it seemed poised to attack at any sign of movement towards it, it accepted a brief pat from the blue, horned boy with the whip before the sound of the weapon cracked through air once more.

A Tainted Beast Attacks!

Health - 100 | Attack - 6 | Defense - 3 | Magic - 0 | Dexterity - 4

***

The full description of battle information and rules can be found here. We expect you all to read that post thoroughly and understand it before making your first battle post. Anyone who doesn't care to read it all the way may be removed from the event as this is a very important concept to understand for the Squire event as whole as well as becoming a Knight. We are open to questions as this may be new to some, but can tell when you're asking questions in lieu of reading. So READ then ask.

The simple version to get started is shown below, but there is far more very important information in the link above, so be sure to read it first!

Battle Basics
Each Squire will roll a 1d10 to start their attack. What you roll will determine if your attack lands or not, based on your opponent's dexterity. This enemy's dexterity is a 4 and you rolled a 7. This means your attack landed. Anything 4 or lower will not land your attack!

So, you rolled that 7 and it passed the dexterity check. That 7 will be added to your base magic or attack amount depending on if you used a melee or magic move in your RP response. If you have a magic base of 5 and use a magical attack, then your total damage inflicted is 12.

This doesn't mean the being takes 12 damage though. Every being has a certain amount of defense. So, you attack for 12 points, but the being has a defense of 6. This means you only hit them for 6 damage.

Sample Attack
Squire 1 rolls a 7! Since his opponents dexterity is 4 that means his attack lands. Squire 1's base attack stat is 6 so he adds it to the 7 he rolled and gets 13 damage. The beast has a defense of 6 meaning it only loses 7 health.

Enemy Super Dodged

Lips curled back into a sneer. This thing wasn't worth their time. All it did was have it's minions try to fight them off. The fuzzball was just a short tempered weakling. Alethea's reaction to something behind him, behind them, the door closing.. It threw him off, stopping in his tracks. Did he need to go back? No, he needed to fight whatever this thing, this fuzzy tainted heretic was.

And then the whip cracking. Harveer had been singlemindedly rushing to keep ranks with Alethea he'd barely been paying attention to the oozing taint around them. It was enough to churn his stomach if thought were given to it. He'd have lost what little was in there. The whistle, another crack of that wretched whip. A beast emerged... A large beast, with hideous features and dripping green ooze. Ugh. The squire had a moment to thank the guardians that Alethea had drawn the fuzzy one's attention, as he was too busy holding back the bile trying to come up at the sight of this monster.

Golden eyes turned from a blue fuzz nugget to a hardened outer shell of a beast he hoped never to encounter again. The pale angel's feet felt bolted to the floor. It was stricken with shock and disgust that Harveer's arms fell to his sides, one of his blades all but slipping from his hands. He'd seen dragnid beasties before, but never one of this size.

A clattering of metal on the ground and his blade had slipped from trained fingers. This thing... They needed to save it. To cleanse it by putting it out of it's wretched misery. Harveer was reeling from the shock of... Whatever it was, coming out of the shadows. How had he missed that?

The deep breath Genesis took felt like fire as it escaped her mouth. She had so far succeeded at keeping her emotions under control or at the very least not visible, but the tainted creature, who had been playing around long enough, had said the wrong thing. It was becoming increasingly clear that they were not going to simply walk by though the quick side glances at her fellows told Genesis that they were all ready for this fight anyways.

Her focus on the tainted "King" was temporarily interrupted by the sound of rumbling behind her, but with the way things were right now, Genesis would not take her golden gaze off of him. It was up to the others to let her know what was going on since she and Eligor were on the front line. Several things seemed to happen at once as Alethea made the first move towards the throne and it felt like her heart stopped in that moment, unsure if they were now fighting on two fronts. Lailah's voice told her what she needed to know. This was the only way now.

Genesis moved forward to back up Alethea and Harveer, ready to fight off the minions he would surely send on them. She expected a quick fight, more of an extermination than a battle, since the minions had numbers but looked relatively easy to pick off. As the whip cracked, a new disfigured creature joined them. She scanned its body quickly for weak spots and things to watch out for while it hissed at them menacingly.

As the whip cracked again and Harveer froze up beside her, it fell on Genesis to take a small leap forward, swinging her great sword with a force learned from her time in the training yard.
