It was time to fight for their house again, he pinched up the sleeveless shirt on him and judged the overly enlarged mascot. It was found in his dorm after he signed up, he snorted as he knew it was the gnomes that knowing no privacy at all. Releasing his grasp to cover most of the skins exposed, the competitors all lined up into five groups according to their houses for the assembly before the first round started. AJ was kinda spaced out, thinking if the orange was replaced by black and the mascot graphic shrank to the size of a chest badge, it would be perfect. A grin showed up on his face when the curtain revealed what they were going to face. How creative the designer was, the boil grew up around the desert of course never ski before. First experience was always so much fun, he couldn't help the agitating thrill inward already. ------------------------------------------- " AJ, what're you wearing?" The serpent-dragon raised a leg so the curious head was able to see the ski. " They're for skiing, see the path going down? We're gonna slide down it with the help of these two long plates and sticks." He explained to the tail head at the peak. Not knowing much about the activity, that was the best he could give. He heard the bell rang and posed to push himself out, but a greater force already did it. Not even have a second to look what swept him down the slope, the skiing began. The slope was steep at fast, bringing the boil traveled through a distance before landing to the snow with staggers. He quickly found the balance by shoving the sticks into the snow to slow down the speed. On his way twisting between the poles, there were assaults that made him raise his brows. Snowmen with different funny expressions tossed snowballs as he passed by, leaving a teasing laughter while sneaky Chrismtas elves hid up and waiting to knock you down with mischievous gleeful smiles. It was really fun, like riding a roller coaster while ahead there were creeple throwing bombs at you. Even it was the first time, his good athletic ability manipulated the ski well to whiz past all the obstacles. Unfortunately, he forgot besides him, there were others on the path. On his left, a giant snowball, nope, a student rolled down the slope while yelling. It flattened and dragged those on their route like a rolling pin and became bigger and unluckily might have to bow out with the race. On the right was a student hunted by the secret ornament of a colorful elf, it jumped and danced on top of its prey. What he should take note of was the one in the middle behind him, a ghoul crying while shaking her head helplessly at high speed. "Oops." He deliberately moved into her way to help her slow down to normal speed, they clipped and missed by one pair of gate. Anyway he finished the ski section uneventful at the remaining part. --------------------------------------------- The icicle made the finish line for the section, where they were brought to the sedate area to take off their equipment for the next section - A simple hurdle track maze. You ask how difficult the hurdle wold be? You can stare at the student skidded on the shiny surface or those fell because of some shady tricks of others, AJ is sure you will get the answer. It was impressive to see a large maze raised up from the ground, he made sure his shoelaces were secured and tapped against the snow to collect his wandering thoughts together. " So Shiny!" The tail head made excited compliment at the giant block of ice which was where the maze stood on. " Yup, so shiny and slippery," AJ added and squinted his eyes at the challenge ahead. Meandering into each other, he carefully sprinted while hopping through the obstacles. He didn't do excellently but not poorly either, he spent extra time turning around within the maze and careful with his steps. There was a time a skidded competitor came into his way, he allowed them to pass through first politely before he continued. Said student bumped into several hurdles but it wasn't his fault. Eventually he could see the exit of the maze, an aching yelp from behind drew AJ's attention. It was a student squirming and covering the middle part between his legs in pain. How merciless! As a male, he knew the pain too well that he sent the poor boil a sympathetic look as he ran towards the exit. ------------------------------------------- " What?" said AJ staring at the balance beam. There was no way he could surpass others on it, therefore, the boil sneaked forward for a nice position before they stepped onto the beam. "AH!" A short but loud shout could be heard, but there was too many creeple blocking his vision, he barely saw someone fell off. The smooth queue came into a sudden pause, he peeked a head and a giant stocking in red caught his eyes, it swang like a pendulum and it was what knocking creeple off the beam into heaps of snow. Ouch, it must hurt. Some decided to walk like a cross, horizontally posing their arm straight like wings of a plane for the best balancing effect. Others bent down to dodge the stockings with height advantage and moved onward at a lower position. AJ had to wait for the queue to move, he stopped at a few steps from the first stocking and passed it when it went backward. Even one could pass the first, there were second, third and so on waiting for them. Except the beginning part of the beam, the middle and towards the end were full of swinging stockings. When they swayed back and forth, a gust of wind would blow up their hair and clothes. Providentially, no one was wearing skirts or dresses. Didn't get knocked off at all, he finished the section. ---------------------------------------------------- The next section was waiting for them once they left the balance beam, in front of the students were bigger-than-usual wreaths fitting for the season. It wasn't hard to guess they were inspired by some sports training method with the use of tyres. Things got ridiculous when they were used in Amityville, having the experience of climbing up a Santa, the knee-height wreath didn't put a threat to AJ. The boil used to do so many part-time until now was good at moving around, his stamina and strength built up over his work. Up and down the wreath, he had no hesitation and had a clear objective. He was the wreath master! While some students stuck at the protruding part of the scented wreath and made themselves smell great, AJ had already in the mid-way of the run. Those big movements consumed his energy but he was almost done with it. He hopped into the last wreath and stepped on the fine branches to push himself up another side. He stood on top of it and looked back, it was quite an amusing scene to see others struggling or shorter students trying to grab onto the wreath by jumping. No luxury to waste time, he jumped down the wreath and sprinted towards the next section which looked like a pine forest. --------------------------------------------------------- The cheers he heard from the Stand suggested he was at the last section of the prolonged obstacle race. AJ wiped the sweats and flung them off his hand, tied up his hair again before he entered the forest path which was actually a row of pine trees. He had to wait until the one before him was a distance from him. He didn't want anything like shoving his face into someone else's bottom. Crawling was uncomfortable, at least for the tail head, it chewed the branch and pushed it as they moved. Sooner or later, it learned hissing was no use to the trees and distraught. " Hey, Bro, we're almost there, cheer up." Hands covered in mud, AJ assured the tail head with enthusiasm. " Why don't we move upward?" The boil jabbed a thumb at a student not following the instruction, he was thrown spiky pinecones and the tree gestured him to crawl. " Ohhhhh~" Surprised by what it saw, the tail head opened its mouth. When the tail head curled next to AJ, its eyes glowed like two red lights shining the dim path. It stared at the ground for pinecones and ate as snacks to bring the happy mood back. Free snacks is the best! Patting his body to get rid of the loose dirt on his outfit, he stood up after crawling through the last pine and afterwards dashed to the finish line. The candy cane given to AJ was immediately snapped by the tail head couldn't help its pigging out while the boil resumed his breath let out a "thank you" as he received a pedal for his effort. They were informed there was quite a time before the next race started, that would give him some times to rest and browse some booths meanwhile. Quote: 2) You manage to fumble your way through a couple of gates, but the snowballs and elf attacks really do a number on your progress. 2 points What was that? Mellow stared at red and black sports wear he was wearing, those were not his favourite colors but the staff told him representing the demon house, he had to wear that in the obstacle race. Fine. It was his second time to join the house cup competition, if last time he was to test his ability as a Ceffyl Dwr, then after he learned how crazy it was, he shouldn't have signed up. Still, he was there. Why? If you ask him, he would have kept silence for a few seconds before he told you " his mother was watching". Further asking if he was the mother's boy, his eyes would twitch at a moment that told you the answer is no. -------------------------------------------------- The petite green haired demon was reluctant, one thing it could be confirmed. The expressionless boil glared at the first section of their race and cursed the fact he couldn't escape. Turning his head at the Stand, he spotted his Kelpies mother who was holding a device to film him. Jack his life, he raised his head skyward. On his feet equipped with the skii, the helper assisted him to put them on while he was spacing out. He didn't plan to move even the merry Christmas bells announce the start of the race, but something swept them down at once. Everyone fell off the starting point, including the poor unprepared Mellow. The straightly perking ears and tails, the tight grasp on the handles and the frozen rigid body all suggested he was scared as the skiing began. His small town didn't have snow and he never do it before. Yet, his animal instinct helped him to find the balance. He was slow but steady. Sighing and allowed the skii to bring him down the slope, splashing some snows up with the high speed, Mellow didn't care if he hit the gate. It was supposed to be like that........until he heard screams from behind, a wave of yells up and down getting closer with a heavy rolling sound. It was the midday, and because of the snow reflection, the lights should be dazzling abundant. Yet, Mellow could feel the lights were getting dimmer and dimmer as he moved on. "Watch out!" Suddenly someone yelled. It startled the poor boil, his heart jumped like a scared pony and the shadow covering him tempted him to look back with an omen. He did and found out a giant snowball was right behind him! JACK! What the hell?! It threatened to roll him into a flat sheet like the remaining who already dragged into it. Seeing the gate, he thought he could create some frictions to stop the snowball so he passed through the gates but unexpectedly the snow ball didn't slow down but accelerated. Mellow pushed himself forward for the escape but a snowman was blocking his path. ISN'T THAT ENOUGH FOR HIM? WHY MORE? He bumped into the poor snowman and enjoyed some free shaved ice - not! With the help of the heap of snow, the snowball bounced up and prepared to land onto Mellow. Within a second, the demon was below it and above it again. The hit wasn't strong enough to knock him out, instead, he was running on the snowball. It magically hit every single gate - HE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE STUPID GATES! - and scattered at the icicle at the bottom. ----------------------------------------------------------- He raised from the snow, his face, hair and clothes all covered in small heaps of snow. Mellow flung his head and patted his clothes, his breathe was white. Great. As awesome as last year. Even though the boil loves water, snow and ice were different from water, they were not fluid after all. Without much stamina, the skii section already tired Mellow out. He was planning to rest at the sedate area, but someone urged him to the hurdle. One might think an equine demon would be great in jumping hurdles, you're correct for just fifty percent. Remember the boil never ski, he never skate on ice either. First, he was petite so those shady competitors could find the demon vulnerable to tricks like wing or tail whapping. In his mother's words: It was disgraceful. Second, his hooves didn't do well on slippery surface and he skidded and stumbled A LOT. Third, he had a bad time figuring out the maze. In conclusion, even the hurdles were easy, he was slow in that section. JACK IT! Mellow seemed to disagree. ------------------------------------------------------------- You expected the boil to do cartwheels on a balance beam, nope, he didn't plan to entertain anyone like a clown sorry. Using his small figure, he simply wanted to pass the damn stick and not fallen into the heaps of snow. He saw ghouls! Jack!! He won't fall down anywhere ghouls gathered!!! The demon had enough of female gathering's horror equaled fallen meant he would be devoured by super hot magma. Nonono, he won't fall candlejack. He didn't even notice the swinging stockings that knocking creeple off the beam, he was too focused at another end of the balance beam. Jack this damn thing, he escaped! The boil proudly puffed up his chest like a mighty little pony onto his next section. ---------------------------------------------------- Jack this s**t! He needs to complain! The organizer is discriminating short creeple. The equine demon stood in front of the high wreath he couldn't reach in easy manner and flipped ten tables inwardly. While other caught up began to struggle through the ring of wreath, the student didn't move an inch but cursing the organizer's ancestors and next generations. "Oh dear, let me help you." A voice said and he was picked up! Rude! He didn't ask for that! The student who looked like a dragon left when Mellow was grabbed onto the wreath. "No need to thank me", she said with a brisk smile. WHO THE JACK ARE YOU - IT'S NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS! After swearing, the hanging midget climbed up the wreath as his arms began to hurt. Sitting on a wreath ring, he heard snickers from another side. He took a glance and it was a petite ghoul. She took a few more glimpses before she snorted and hopped down the wreath she was on. That was a challenge, alright, he's in! The short equine boil jumped down his wreath and worked his way, seething. He won't lose to a damn ghoul, the anger gave him an effective boost. ---------------------------------------------------- When he was at the last section, he lost track of the damn ghoul. In front of him was a track of crawling. He was about to raise his leg and hop over the branch with a flat expression, but the one doing it ahead was punished by pinecones. He quietly put down his leg and crawled underneath the branch. The protruding branches often got into his growing hair or the cotton texture fabric, sometimes it would go into his sensitive ear and make the pony yelp. Jack all these stupid things! Half swearing half crawling, he wasn't sure when he finished it. It wasn't bad, he wasn't the first few who finished it but there were more creeple behind him still racing. Mellow was fully exhausted, he lay on the ground and refused to move until he could sniff the scent of his mother that he squirmed away like a worm. What a jacking day. Quote: 6) Great job! You zoom past the competition while also hitting every gate effortlessly! 10 points 2) You can't quite figure out where you're meant to go in the maze of hurdles. Plus, the floor is really slippery. You remain near the back of the pack the whole way. 2 points You're several hurdles in when a classmate's tail or wing whaps you off course, hindering your progress! 4 points 6) You're so steady that you could probably do some cartwheels or something and still not fall off! It won't win you any extra points, but why not? 10 points 3) You get slightly off track and lose some time to the wreaths. Luckily, the exit is plainly obvious, so you just have to adjust your path! 4 points Were you not being so careful, you might have finished things a little quicker. You also might have faceplanted. As it is you're doing pretty good! 6 points 1) You try to walk on top of the lowered branches anyway, in spite of the instructions you were given. It's a mistake. 0 points You're doing okay! It's a little tough after everything you've been through today, but not any worse than you expected. 6 points Quote: Student Name: Mellow Marsh Points Total: 34 Section One: 10 Section Two: 2 + 2 = 4 Section Three: 10 Section Four: 4 + 2 = 6 Section Five: 0 + 4= 4 Did you remember to use your speed stat? Strider was not in this for the house pride or the thrill of competition. No he was in it for the trophies, babes and glory. Strider was also nothing if not extremely good looking. As in, he was nothing other than that. He had no strength, no smarts, no teamwork skills. Just a lot of really sharp cheekbones.
Skiing was a mess because snow was nothing like icy water at all and quite frankly Strider was a little offended by the betrayal. He just hoped nobody was watching him ruin his perfectly beautiful face.
He felt much more at ease with the hurdles considering he was very skilled at icy hurdles. Interpret that as you will.
Thankfully on the balance beam while he was knocked off multiple times he never actually fell off; he always lifted himself back up and eventually made it to the end. He was kind of incredulous at all of the third years doing it with ease; it just didn't seem natural or fair for them to excel so much at this task. Where was the part where Strider won all the trophies and babes?
The wreaths weren't even something he was going to mention later. They never happened.
The crawl on the other hand he would talk about on end for the following weeks because seriously did you see the way his butt looked in that position? Looked damn good it did.
The end was actually where Strider excelled most: soaking up people's attention was his specialty. He even signed a few (unnecessary) autographs. The curtain lifted on a complex obstacle course, and Quark grinned. What a wonderful start to the House Cup! He did love running. That the jolly course, complex as it was, looked hardly daunting at all was a bonus. The Jubjub bird was way less sanguine about the skis tied securely to his feet. His grin gave way to a thoughtful scowl. No running in these, alas. He still had a foot up in the air in frowning scrutiny of the ski when a strong, chilly push came from behind. The force was enough to overbalance him altogether, launching him into a head-over-heels tumble down the slope. The first few moments mid-tumble, the flailed wildly, trying in vain to find some sort of handhold, some sort of way to halt his rapid, thoroughly embarrassing descent and stand up again. Once the tumbling boil thought to stop flailing, he threw his weight to the side reflexively as he saw a snowman torso headed straight his way. The movement sent his path angling toward the nearest slalom gate. He reached out, didn't quite manage to catch the poles on either side and pull himself upright, but he did make it through the gate. Maybe this boil-turned-snowball business had its perks after all. He was probably making faster progress this way. And while being pelted by the snowmen and the elves still hurt, they didn't really distract from the momentum of his rolling. Forget trying to ski the proper way, then. He continued rolling his merry way down the hill, crossing a good fraction of the slalom gates along the way. Once he stopped by the giant icicle at the foot of the slope, he kicked off the confining skis even before he'd shaken off all the accumulated snow and dizziness. He barely registered the disapproving glare from the elf collecting his skis. Thank Jack the next leg of the obstacle course simply required him to do what he liked best -- run and jump. He breezed right through the maze, bounding over each hurdle with grinning glee. Snow and ice had a harder time clinging to claws, but he shook off what little remained as golden eyes sized up the balance beam and the stockings swinging over it. Once he felt he'd figured out the pattern of the swinging, he waited for an opening. There. Confident in his own balance and the grip of his claws, he charged down the balance beam as fast as his own balance would permit. Sometimes the stockings had just swung past or were mere milliseconds from colliding into him, but these brushes with danger simply made the experience more exhilarating. He made it across in good time. Next came the knee-high wreaths. He took the first few slowly, still getting used to balancing speed and jump height. It took him a while to work out how to make his way through, but he made a strong finish, bounding through the last wreaths. His stamina was flagging by the time he reached the last leg of the obstacle course, and the narrow crawlspace didn't improve matters much. His wings just didn't enjoy being tucked in close, all right? He'd forget himself so far as to stretch them out slightly mid-crawl. Harmless, normally, but here, slightly was enough to snag hard against a branch or earn him some thrown pinecones from the grumpier trees. Sometimes even both. Completing his crawl with middling speed, he emerged into a teeming crowd of Christmas citizens. He had an vague impression of lots and lots holiday cheer as he mechanically smiled and accepted the participation prizes. Wonder what the Christmas citizens had in store for them for the rest of the House Cup. For now, he contented himself with swinging the medal from one hand and munching on the candy cane. Sure, the places where the snowman parts, bolas, and pinecones landed still twinged, and his elbows and knees were sore too, thanks to that final crawl, but candy made everything better. On nights like this, Rojo kind of regretted that he wasn't much for sleeping. It made waiting for the start of the House Cup nearly unbearable. The boil spent most of the evening before the competition trying on his new undead dorm duds and posing athletically in front of the half circle of mirrors outside his massive closet.
When the sun rose he was ready, having chosen the sleeveless shirt, drawstring pants, headband, and bow as his final ensemble, the one that would lead him to victory! He bounced as he was ushered out of the dorm and toward the stadium, entering and climbing up the ramp with an open-jawed grin. As slowly as the night had gone prior to this, time was flying now, and Rojo was pushing his way to the front of the pack to get a good view of what he would be facing. ICE! So much of it!
He was still at the front when the course began and he pushed off mostly out of shock but partially out of necessity. Everyone else was doing it. If he didn't he would be stampeded. Still, Rojo kept his balance somehow, weaving between posts like he had been born to, even though he hadn't even remotely seen this much snow ever. The skeleton even managed a twee little spray of snow as he came to a stop. All of those mirror poses had really helped!
Unfortunately, his next test was the hurdles, something that the boil apparently really stunk at. He understood that he was meant to follow a path of some sort, but he didn't understand where it was. Even if he had, this entire area of the course was far too slippery, and the balance he had displayed on his skis drained away when he made the switch to his own two bony legs. Rojo was eternally grateful when he saw the balance beam up ahead. Even if he did poorly there too, at least it would be a change of scenery.
At first when he mounted the narrow beam, Rojo inched forward at a crawl, but when he felt the rough surface under his feet, the boil sped up. So far he had only done poorly when confronted by slippery ground, and the confidence that came with that little bit of traction had him speeding ahead, making back most of the time he had lost in the last area.
The wreaths, however... Something about them tripped Rojo up again and he slowed down to a crawl, tiptoeing into the center of each one and whispering encouragement to himself before moving on. Tricky.
He came into the last section of the race knowing he had time to make up. Even so, Rojo stopped before the line of bent trees, assessing his options. Theoretically the fastest way was probably over the top, but as he watched, a snakey, short-limbed ghoul taking the course in her natural form tried that tactic only to have her legs pulled out from under her and her body thrown back to the start of the section. That was out then. Pushing up his sleeves, Rojo got down on his hands and knees and shimmied forward, his lovely undead gym clothes getting almost immediately splattered with mud. It was difficult to keep up his pace after all he had already been through, but the boil forced himself to recall how the course had looked from above, all pristine and pale, and it made him want to finish. He was just as good as a Christmas elf. RAH!
With an eerie yell, the skeleton powered his way through, emerging with a triumphant hop and claiming his medal with his muddy hands.Quote: Student Name: Rojo Points Total: 34 Section One: 10 Section Two: 0 + 4 = 4 Section Three: 8 Section Four: 2 Section Five: 10Did you remember to use your speed stat? y Did you use your luck stat for this challenge? n

At first Wrex had honestly thought that the House Cup had been, well, a literal cup the size of a house. And that had gotten him into wondering, what might be in such a monumental cup? Giant food? The world's largest container of soda? Dessert?? Even better, it was massive competition.
Nevermind that the monster was barely a few months into his schooldom or that he had slacked off recently to take naps and pull pranks rather than try and learn anything. This was his time to shine!
Wary of the small people outfitting them with weird things (Wrex had learned early on that small things like gnomes and such were not to be trusted, squishy or not), he gave the wooden planks on his feet a few wiggles, frowning curiously. They felt awkward against his claws, and he wasn't sure they could hold his weight. And he was just supposed to slide down the slope like that? The boil was a bit skeptical--couldn't he just use his belly or something? That was more fun anyway. But as it would turn out, he would need something with better directional control anyway.
Before he could really get used to the skis, whoever, a giant icicle pushed them all out. Wrex yelped in surprise as he wobbled on one foot and then the other, accidentally dodging most of the projectiles tossed at him. The cold air whipped past him delightfully, though, and he found himself speeding down with his tongue lolling and his hair moving wildly at his back. Hell, he didn't mind getting snow tossed at him even, the flight down was too much fun. He was a little sad when he hit the base of the hill, only then realizing that maybe he should have tried, well, concentrating on getting those gates. Ah well.
Getting himself together after slamming into the icicle rather painfully, Wrex pried the skis off with great pleasure and flexed his toes before facing the next part of the course. Just branch hurdling? Really? Well that would be a piece of cake!
Disgusting cake, that is. Those things really liked to entangle on his claws, even when he swore he was jumping high enough and early enough! He snapped at one and thwapped it with his tail in passing. It didn't help that the floor was pure ice; he wasn't used to navigating that territory, and his feet weren't exactly built to handle it either. Wrex eventually got to the other side after some slipping and sliding, growling to himself in frustration.
No way was he going to be made a fool of in this next part. He snorted a challenge at the large swinging...red socks...? What...? Christmas was a weird holiday, that was for sure. But the obstacles weren't going to stop him, not after the last few mishaps. Gone was the carefree grin, replaced by the competitive glare that Daggerbacks learned at a very young age. In the distance he could hear Brute's cries of victory and hustled to get past the balancing beam.
And funnily enough, that speed dd the trick. Wrex's own momentum carried him past the swinging stockings, and his large tail, while cumbersome, provided a useful means to balance himself. Well, as long as he managed not to get hit. Once on the other side, he snarled at the socks and drew an X in the snow with his tail just for show. NAILED IT.
Now they were asking him to just carry some circle plant thing? EASY PEASY FOXFIRE SQUEASY BLOODY MEATY--Wait, he was losing track here.
Wrex gripped it in his mouth, making a face at the taste. Seriously, how did herbivores do it? Meat was so much better?? Not that he couldn't engulf this either, though he swallowed back his saliva at the thought as he hobbled across the way, arms curled close to his chest. His jaws had always been stronger anyway.
Once allowed to spit it out on the other side, it was the final stretch. Unwittingly Wrex tried to hop over the tree limbs, wondering why the way across looked so clear--up until the limbs forced him back down and pelted him with snowballs for daring to try. "Stoooooooooooop!" he whined as he crawled along with the rest, quite ready to mark up one of those damn things with his claws once this was over. As if matters weren't bad enough, the fir was still a taste in his mouth! Ugh! This obstacle course sucked rotten eggs.
At least it was the end now. Shaking off pine needles and snow as well as spitting out a bit more of that awful gunk from his mouth, Wrex was presented with a medal and a funny looking striped cane thing. he pouted at the teeming Christmas folk before ripping the wrapper off and giving the thing a try.
Well...At least it was better than plant taste?

Alright. So the last time she had done a House Cup, she had struggled majorly, and while she was a third year now on the verge of graduation, there was still that small flutter of nervousness as she approached the top of the hill. More people were watching than last time, and now she had the boils to compete against--well, technically poor Ignatius was left on his own in the Ghost dorms, but still! She had to beat Brenley and Lock, retain her rightful place as the strongest of them all!
"Deep breaths, Pipes," she muttered to herself as she fixed her hair, making sure it was tied back well and tight. The last thing she needed was for it to get messed up or in her way. She'd never gone skiing before, but it didn't look hard. Just had to keep low to the ground to keep her balance and watch what was directly in her path. Not too bad.
The icicle style send off, though, she could have done without. Nevertheless, Piper's head was in the game. She zoomed and zigzagged through the gates, almost avoiding every projectile. It was just one snowman near the end that ruined her nearly perfect run, and by the time she righted herself, it was too far back to go and give it a piece of her mind. At least she managed not to smack into the other icicle waiting for the competitors below.
Good thing the stadium suppressed her magic, because she was hankering to send some fire at those branches in the way at the next part of the course. But Piper had grown up in a giant forest--she was more than used to hopping over the overgrown roots and branches, hissing every once in a while when her foot did caught. Was that elf cheering her on or jeering? Maybe the gnomes had soured her disposition to tiny creatures in general. (But hey, at least there weren't birds everywhere. That was the new low for her.)
Thus did she hop, skip, and leap her way over the giant ice cube of an arena.
Piper got another chance to flaunt her stuff when she reached the balance beam cut across by several large red stockings. Well, she supposed it was better than wrecking balls or arrows or something...Though she had no urge to try and get smacked by one nonetheless. Tossing her hair back, the reaper carefully picked her way across, face set in concentration.
Maybe getting her life together was what let her get across unscathed. Or maybe she was just that good. Mmm yeah let's go with that. Metaphors were for NERDS.
Maybe she was being too careful though. The next part made her wary as she picked up her wreath with some grunting. Was something going to chase them? She half expected a giant snowman to form and follow after, but other than some unfortunate tripping, nothing really stood in the way. Well, small miracles, right?
"More trees?" Piper complained, which was funny given that she'd grown up around them. But Christmas trees were just different, alright? They smelled weird, they looked different, and they were clearly hostile. She watched some poor kid get smacked down for trying to go over all the low hanging branches, and with a sigh she realized she was going to have to crawl her way to the finish line. How undignified.
And probably unlucky, since her outfit wasn't exactly winter-themed. What could she say, she liked being loose and free.
Her determination saw her through. Eventually Piper hit the finish line and was awarded a medal and a candy cane, which felt more like consolation prizes than anything substantial. Ah well, one competition down!

She was ready for this. She was totally ready for this. Her uniform on - black and red - she was going to do her dorm proud. She was going to make her big brother proud. She was going to take pride in what she would do. Oh the excitement was building inside, she could just start right now! The stadium erupted in roars of excitement, cheering for respective houses, and it was exhilarating. The pep talk that Uru had offered helped calm her nerves as she stepped into the stadium with her fellow black-red members. Now, she was just taking everything in. An elf began speaking, her attention entirely on her. Laser focus. Pin-point focus. Focus. Focus. Breathe in, breathe out. She can totally do this. She wasn't strong, but she was fast and she was quite quick to react. An obstacle course. Rolling her neck, she turned to face the course in front of her. Stage 1: She stepped forward, slipping her feet into rather nice looking skis. She had never skied before... but she heard it could be fun. Bending over to secure her strap, something came from behind pushing her forward down the snowy slop. Brenna let out a loud screech as she flailed down the hill, flailing her arms to regain her balance. That was a surprise! What was more surprising were the sentient snowmen throwing snow at them. She watched as one - in particular - grab a good portion of it's belly and lob it in her direction. She swerved out of the way, ducking beneath whizzing snowballs when a bola of garland rushed past her flank. She glared at the elves that manned these insane weaponized decorations. She maneuvered quickly to dodge, weave, and avoid their attempts to knock her out. Just as she was approaching the finish line, something beaned the back of her head, sending her forward to the end of the course.
Looking back up with snow covered mask, she looked to see a particularly large snowman. "Seriously?" She asked rhetorically. Huffing, she sat herself upright as others came down the slope to join her as finishers. Stage 2: After freeing herself of her skis, she looked at the next obstacle. Hurdles sprouted forth from the ground. Immediately, she knew these were not made by the student council or were they put there. No, these were unnatural. As she placed her hand down to push herself to her feet, the demon ghoul felt the cold permeate through her gloves. Ice. They were standing on ice. They had wanted the competitors to run and jump over hurdles .... on ice. Predictably, it was as painful as she had imagined. She had only managed to get over one hurdle before falling on herself. Lovely. She squeaked as she wiggled to stand upright again. Growling, she let the spell take affect, wisping away her reaper-like form to reveal the demon hellhound beneath. Her body covered in a rich, chocolate brown fur and light cream like soft tones, growing a bit in size. With claws and pads, she may be able to get through this event without much problem.
She could almost hear her brother scoffing at her use of their natural form for something like this. Well, he could certainly shove it.
Luckily, she wasn't the last one out of the event. Stage 3:Her paws wet, it would do her no good on this next section. A balance beam? Okay, she could totally do that. She was a balanced individual. She could dance circles around someone before they could land a hit on her. However, this was when her feet is wet and giant stockings were swinging back and forth to knock them off! Seriously, the things this school does... was absolutely hysterical and fun. She let the spell revert, returning herself to her student, reaper-like appearance. She needed maneuverability not speed here.
However, she makes it through with ease. She even throws as cartwheel and a few handsprings in there as she goes, a grin on her face. Stage 4: Wreaths laid sprawled amongst the competition floor. Was this similar to a high knee obstacle exercise? She had seen her brother do it a lot but used rings of frost instead. However, these fragrant firs were so high! This was going to be interesting. Brenna wasn't going to let that discourage her. She was doing this for her dorm and herself. She could do this! Pumping herself up, she charged head onto the challenge. She may have snagged here or there, but she made it through with very little difficulty. However, the high-knees were really getting her to lose her breath. It was good exercise though. She was still smiling. Stage 5: From the slippery slopes of lobbed snowballs and garland bolas to ice block hurdles. From balance beam and swinging stockings to a field of wreaths. Now a forest of pine with low hanging branches. The demon ghoul had watched as one attempted to climb over the task only to be punished. So it was going to be a slow crawl to the end. No matter, she wasn't too afraid to get dirty.
Actually, that was a lie. She didn't like getting dirty, but that did not mean she wouldn't.
Brenna crawls through with some catches of her clothing, but the smell of pine was nice to accompany her route. Finish Line: She had finished! It wasn't too difficult that she wanted to complain about it (at least, not a loud), but she had done her dorm good. She had made it through as one of the firsts to do so. Not too many hang ups, only used her natural ability once, but that's fine... No one had called her out on it - excluding her spectating brother who should totally be quiet and spectate and not judge her which he is totally doing as he glared the back of her head. Though, she suspected a smile and a sense of pride that his sister did a good job of the course. With a candy cane in hand and a participation medal, she went up to the stands to join him and others. When he'd heard there was an obstacle course, Yin had been ecstatic. He tried to remember that as he gazed down at the newest hell that awaited him, and thought a few words that he would never, ever, utter. Right. He was back at school. Of COURSE there would be snow. He was not sure who he had offended in the past, but he must have done something wrong. Still, he had signed up for this mess, and now that he was back, even with the horrible JOYous flashbacks he was having, he was going to compete. He had speed on his side, it couldn't be that bad. And it should not have been, until they were made to strap boards to their feet. He knew what this was, of course, he had learned a few things, but actually skiing? That was a different matter altogether. A bell jingled, and he had a second to try to determine how to get started before a giant icicle decided for him. Apparently it was time to go. Still, instincts kicked in. Despite the snowmen trying to sabotage him, and the elves with their traps, he was doing fairly well. The poles made sense, and he was about to steer a bit with his wings, even if he couldn't actually fly. Moving helped keep him warm, and he was starting to feel a bit of hope before someone clipped him in passing. The result was him stumbling into the next round of the course, not yet fully prepared for what was to come. Filling in the rest later Quote: Student Name: Yin Points Total: 25 Section One: 6 Section Two: 0 + 1 = 1 Section Three: 0 + 5 = 5 Section Four: 2 + 5 = 7 Section Five: 6 Did you remember to use your speed stat? Aisha had only really seen snow once and the memories were tied to some pretty traumatizing experiences. Of course she'd never been skiing before. Still, she always liked to try new things and she was feeling her house spirit very strongly as the stands cheered and all the students came out with their A game. Even the zombie ghoul had done appropriate body paint with a silver and green face skull and centipedes and snakes painted around her arms and legs. She pulled her hoody tight and turned her headphones up to drown out the crowd and focus as she started the first leg of the course. The first couple of gates were rough. She stumbled and dodged, only a little bit of speed helping her not totally screw it up. The elves were a bit annoying, and the traps, and the first few caught her off guard. Any tempo she;d set, any quick progress she made, ended up thwarted pretty thoroughly by the tiny menaces. Still, she eventually finished and survived no worse for wear. The massive ice sheet in front of them all looked very daunting. Aisha wasn't exactly clumsy but she also wasn't used to cold or ice. Her boots were more for fashion and comfort than practicality. She decided to work slowly this time, not wanting to fail, but too uncoordinated to really make a ton of progress. She was in the back of the crowd by the time she got to the end. Taking her time with the next activity only went better for her. She was able to dart pretty quickly past the stockings, though the color was very distracting. Aisha's steady pace did her no good in the next activity. The pine needles were also sticking in her clothes and kinda pissing her off. She was vaguely huffy by the time she emerged from the field of evergreen. The final stretch she simply gritted her teeth and stuck it out. KNowing it was the end sped her on and thankfully had gained a bit of ground by the time she emerged, battered and stuck with pine needles and cones, and very much ready for it to be over. Quote: Step 1: You trip up early, tumbling all the way down the hill and missing every slalom gate. 0 points Step 2: You can't quite figure out where you're meant to go in the maze of hurdles. Plus, the floor is really slippery. You remain near the back of the pack the whole way. 2 points Step 3: Trying to pass another student on a balance beam? Probably not. At the mercy of the slowness of the student in front of you, you finish slightly slower than you might have liked. Still, it's an excellent showing! 8 points Step 4: You are the WREATH MASTER! 10 points Step 5: Your hair/wings/tail/whatever gets caught on the branches as you crawl. Tough break, but at least you're not the slowest! 4 points Malik was ready for everything, except when it came to the obstacle course apparently. He had thought he could do it no problem, but oh was he wrong. Not only did he end up messing up, he just straight out toppled down the hill, wings and arms flailing as he attempted to catch himself. He was supposed to be a super impressive demon and here he was messing it all up. He really hoped Magda hadn't seen any of his fumbles, but there was no telling what would happen. She was probably focused on her own course though, so perhaps he was safe for now. All in all this was not a very good start for the young boil. Getting up and brushing himself off, he nearly slipped and fell as he got to the hurdles. It was a miracle he didn't fall with how slick the ground was, but maybe he had a bit more balance than he thought he did. Oh did he come close to failing it all though. He was glad to be done with that part and move on from it all. No more hurdles for him ever again. He kept toward the back, too afraid and also not good enough to really figure out what he was supposed to be doing during all of this. Hopefully he could make all of this up somehow. Next was onto the balance beams, and he was thrilled about this. He had managed not to fall over during the hurdles so maybe this was a sign that he was a bit more of a balance master than he initially thought. He could balance! He could totally balance. He could balance well enough that he was moving faster than other creeple, and being stuck behind them was just no fun. The beams were crowded as it was and he did not like being cramped close to others. It was enough to make him nearly jump off and run around them all, but that would be cheating. At least he was doing better this time than in the other steps so far. While he doubted he had a chance of winning this course, maybe there was a chance for him to catch up a bit and prove that he was not a complete failure. Next up was the wreath run, and boil did he do well with that part of the course. He saw smaller creeple sink into the wreaths, struggling to get passed them all and move on to the last part of the race. While he felt bad for them, he was proud that he could maneuver through the obstacle with such ease. He was an incredibly tall demon, so perhaps that was the reason why. He was catching up in the course, and even if it was because of his height it didn't matter. He just wanted to do well. He was coming up to the final part of the course. He had to crawl under the trees. He had seen some other students try to crawl over and get badly pelted with pine cones and he did not want the same fate as that. He had started out well, moving through with a little trouble but not too bad off. That was until one of his horns decided to loop onto a branch. He panicked then, tugging at the branch until his horn was finally free from the terrible thing. It went on like that from there. While he wasn't the slowest in the course he would definitely not come out on top after all of his goofs. Jil was here because she liked to win things. She liked to be better than other people and if possible crush them under her tiny heel. As a first year it wasn't likely she'd actually do it, but she'd make a damn good effort. Skiing was an activity for disgusting limbed beings, but she participated because it was necessary. The tiny ghoul was rather light and quick so she managed to avoid nearly all the obstacles and weave in an out of the gates until that disgusting snow creature tripped her up. The next obstacle was not so easy. Taking a step out onto the ice slowly had her bobbling and sliding so she put all of her speed into darting across the surface and maybe a bit of her own magic into sailing over the hurdles. The balance beam was not as easy as it looked. She'd exerted quite a bit of effort on the hurdles so this next activity took concerted effort not to screw up. Thankfully the ghoul was so tiny and light she practically walked right over the wreath run. SHE'S A WREATH MASTER. Being forced to crawl was disgusting, expecially when the branches kept snagging her long hair. Still, she emerged ahead of some others and that was satisfying enough. Hollandaise was not sure why she had signed up, other than that this was the thing to do. So she was here, and she would participate, and she would do well. Or well enough. The first stage was skiing - she had never done this before. Like trees, many warders simply slowed in the cooler months, shedding their leaves and sleeping longer hours. She dodged as best she could, but it really wasn't very well done. And when she dodged, it was more out of apprehension that the snowballs would snap off a leaf or a bit of twig. She skidded to a stop and vowed that skiing was not a past time she would pick up. The next thing was hurdles across some sort of frozen lake. Hollandaise paused, losing time, to press a hand to the wood. She found only cold and deadness. She did not try again. The balancing beam was easy for her. The warder had always been relatively light on her feet, and quick. But some idiot boil had slowed to a crawl. While she seethed, he finished. Jumping wreaths was uneventful although aggravating. Hollandaise was short enough that they were a challenge and she briefly wished for wings. Or for her body to shoot up to a towering height as it was supposed to. Pipe dreams. And lastly, she obligingly dropped to her belly and crawled under trees, chatting with them as she passed. Hollandaise slowed, asking one about how much sun it was getting, before realizing she was still in a competition and should be finishing. With a fond farewell, she moved on, towards the finish line. --------------------- 2, You manage to fumble your way through a couple of gates, but the snowballs and elf attacks really do a number on your progress (+4) 4, You jump the hurdles better than most but worse than many. Still, it's a decent effort! 5, Trying to pass another student on a balance beam? Probably not. At the mercy of the slowness of the student in front of you, you finish slightly slower than you might have liked. Still, it's an excellent showing! 3, You get slightly off track and lose some time to the wreaths. Luckily, the exit is plainly obvious, so you just have to adjust your path! 2, It's dark and slightly muddy under the branches. The combination slows you to a near standstill.

'Why' was all Harmony thought as she looked at the course. This wasn't a mandatory event, but yet here she was. Even worse, she'd been forced to participate for the Monster dorms, a sheer betrayal of her own kind. She wished she was back in her dorm room, curled up in her pool. And so it was that Harmony was daydreaming about damp places when an icicle pushed the line of students into action. The slope was steep and Harmony immediately folded up her arms against her thin chest and hoped for the best. A garland bola wrapped around her and her tail hissed out, teeth snapping at the cheerful sparkle until it snapped. Harmony smiled briefly at that. The next icicle thudded into her and Harmony nearly went flying through the air. She whirled, ready to hiss at this indignity, but it was time for the next round. Ice. Her tail and palms could gain no traction on it - it must be enchanted. The nest stage, the balance beam, was slightly easier. But by this point, Harmony was determined to finish the course sheerly out of spite. Spite could carry her far - it was her prime motivator in things. It carried her through the balance beam, her tail biting it's way along the path. It carried her past that and into the wreaths. Her instinct was to fly and she quelled it. Cheating was not something a demon did; they bent rules to work in their favor, they did not break them. The crawl she utterly balked at, her clothing would be utterly ruined. Gritting her teeth, Harmony flopped down and went. -------------------------------------- You manage to fumble your way through a couple of gates, but the snowballs and elf attacks really do a number on your progress. You can't quite figure out where you're meant to go in the maze of hurdles. Plus, the floor is really slippery. You remain near the back of the pack the whole way. Although this is definitely more difficult than you thought it would be, you're doing a decent job! Take your time! Were you not being so careful, you might have finished things a little quicker. You also might have faceplanted. As it is you're doing pretty good! Your hair/wings/tail/whatever gets caught on the branches as you crawl.
