Imperio laughed, open and inviting, when Orion bumped into him, pushing back jokingly in a playful manner. Even Eury couldn't hide a grin at their antics. Imperio liked this Eury--she was always smiling on these nights instead of that weird kinda smile she did most of the time. Her braids were pretty too! He gave Eury an affectionate headbutt as he managed to dance his way closer, nipping at the long red ribbon intertwined in her mane as he pulled back. Maybe he could save one of the ribbons to give to Keahi later on! Ribbons were fun and he was sure that Keahi would love them too!

Sometimes he wishes that Keahi could join them on this night, but this was a special herd night. That was okay though, he thought, as he hummed and did another wiggle. He'd get to see her soon anyway. Him and Invicky would take a trip and they'd get to see his wonderful, smart Keahi!

Eury laughed when Imperio gave her an affectionate headbutt, enjoying the antics of the two stallions that danced on either side of her. These boys were almost like brothers to her, silly older brothers who often acted like younger brothers anyway.

She twirled into another circle when Imperio came closer again, aiming to nab at another of her ribbons playfully. She scurried out of the way and around to the other side of the fire, her tail brushing against the pile that was Nixsi and her children. Her tail tickets Nixsi nose, who sneezed daintily, her whole body shaking. Eury saw Shiranai and Silhouette lift their heads up from where they had been resting across their mother's back, and Eury threw a playful wink in their direction, enjoying the momentary flustering blush that spread across Silhouette's face. Ohhh, he was so easy, she thought with a giggle. Most of the stallions may have long grown used to her games, but it was still entertaining to tease the younger ones.

Isiyah eyes the blushing Silhouette and snorted. The stallion was still young and had yet to reach his first majority. Isiyah didn't even think the stallion had found a mare (or stallion, Isiyah mused) for breeding seasons of the past.

It was no wonder though, he contemplated, as he watched the white colored stallion settle back down, his body wrapped protectively around his mother and sister. The younger stallion was notoriously overprotective of his mother and sister--a fact that was well known among the herd. Anytime a stranger came near the valley, Silhouette would be the first to step in between the stranger and his family. The boy was young yet, but he was disciplined. Isiyah could respect that at least, though his youth and naivety still was a cause of some disdain.

Imperio made another playful swipe at Eury's ribbons, chasing the flying ends with his mouth open. His back leg brushed close to the fire and he felt the burn, the stinging heat against his back ankle. It cause him no pain, just the warmth that always accompanied him, no harsher than when he laid out in the summer sun. Fire had never hurt him--it was only the burning cold that made him limbs sting and burn, hurting worse than fire ever could.

He ignored the feeling, kicking a fiery log absently back into the bonfire as he chased Eury and Orion around the fire, letting his mane blow into his eyes carelessly. He could always just remove one of his own ribbons to give to Keahi, but what would the fun be in that. Eury kept the best of the ribbons for herself and only the best would be good enough for his Keahi.

Emaera giggled from her place off to the side, close enough to the fire to keep herself and her water warm, as she watched the antics of the herd. When the temperature had started to drop and the edges of her pond had the slow creep of ice on the edges, they had moved her into a moderate sized basket, the inside lined liberally with mud and oil to keep her fully submerged. It wasn't a large basket, designed more for her temporary use than long-term, but it was large enough for her to swim a few laps and dive to the bottom which they had thoughtfully lined with her favorite shiny rocks. She had hooked herself over the edge of the basket, her small two hooves looped over the side to anchor herself and her tail swished back and forth in time with the music.

Tomorrow, Imperio would strap this basket onto his back and make the slow trek down to the southern beaches where Emaera would spend the rest of her winter. She always stayed until the first snow, even if it meant spending days and days in her basket, being kept warm by the edge of the fire. Had she been with anyone else, she might have felt trapped but Imperio always made sure to come by to keep her company. Cera and Nixsi as well would often spend their afternoons, chatting with her against the fireplace, worrying that her water was too hot or too cold for her.

She might be the odd on in the herd, the one with two hooves and a fin instead of four hooves but they never made her feel like she didn't below.

Imperio danced around, triumph, the smallest edge of a red ribbon caught between his teeth. Eury had wandered close, allowing him to snatch the small edge of one that had been tied to the edge of her tail. Even as Imperio trotted around with his prize, Eury just laughed, bumping playfully into his side and allowing him the prize.

Imperio, content and finally feeling the edge of stress on his legs, collapsed off to the side, curling himself around Emaera's basket, his tail flicking back and forth in time with the music. Orion whistled at him from the dancing, pouting, before setting his sights on another hapless victim to join him. He nuzzled Emaera happily, splashing a bit of water over the edge of the basket. He dropped the ribbon between his legs, nudging it back and forth with his nose as he imagined Keahi's expression when he presented it to her. It'd look so wonderful in her hair! All pretty red and orange and white, he though, humming.

"Eep," Emaera said, with a giggle when Imperio nuzzled her, knocking her basket sideways for a moment and letting some of the water splash over the edge. Imperio was always so happy and exuberant, and she had became fast friends with him ever since that fateful day on the beach. She had been so scared the first time she had met these odd land-walking giants, but Imperio had made her feel so at ease despite how much bigger he was than her.

She set one of her small, dainty hooves on his cheek, nudging him to pay attention to her as she strained to see what he had dropped on the ground. "Ohhh," she said, her voice curious. "Is that one of the ribbons?" She loved seeing the ribbons and how they waved so prettily in the air. Eury had given her a special one when the night started and has one of the two-leggers carefully wrap the ribbon around her tail. She swayed back and forth, feeling the fabric float around in the water and brush her side.

Isiyah wondered, not for the first time this night, why he bothered to stay through these boorish festivities. His eyes trained on the dancing, his disdain apparent to all at all of the foolish frolicking and laughter even as the scent of holly filled the cold air. But, traditions were important--they were what made up the world. Isiyah valued little, but time had wrought these motions, carved them into stone and into their lives. And Isiyah would honor them.It was why he stayed, watching silently from the sidelines and Moir next to him, similarly disinterested in the proceedings.

He considered sitting down. He could feel the tall-tell ache in his knees that spoke of his age. It had been creeping up on him over the years, the slow ache of his bones and muscles, the shortness of breath he felt after ever run. He still loved the wind in his mane and tail as much as he ever did, loved the heaving of his chest, but the slow ache of his joints made each and ever run harder and harder to complete.

Time had carved something else into him, and Isiyah was not sure if he enjoyed it.

Cera considered for a moment, looking down at the sprawl of bodies leaning against her and keeping her warm and toasty from the told before taking her eyes back up to the dancing. She hummed a little to herself before working up her courage. She gracefully pulled herself up to her feet, extracting herself from the warm cocoon that Silhouette and Nixsi had made for her, shaking herself and working her numbed limbs back into action. She turned back around and met the eyes of Silhouette, the silly little stallion who looked almost indignantly at her for leaving. She couldn't suppress a giggle, bending her neck down to nudge him affectionately.

"Come, come," she said with another nudge, urging him to his feet. "Come dance with me, Silhouette. Dance, dance." She teased him and marveled at the fact that a few years ago, she would have never dared.

Isiyah rolled his eyes as he watched the silly pink mare try to urge the young stallion up to his feet for a dance. The white stallion obviously did not know what to do with the attention of a mare who he was not related to. While he doubted that the pink mare had any designs on the younger stallion, it was still almost amusing to watch Silhouette bumble his way up at the older mare's urging. His usually graceful and steady movements were stumbling instead, unsure of what to do and where. He obviously wished to not be there, unused to the attention or unsure of anything that could remotely be considered dancing. What a fool, Isiyah thought, bending his neck to scratch his test idly.

It had been many years since Isiyah had danced.

"Silly Silhouette," Cera teased as she finally urged him on his feet not without the undue helping of his doting and precious mother. He had always been so graceful, a strong and steady presence in contrast to the flighty but kind nature of his mother. He was kind beyond a fault, something he no doubt inherited from Nixsi, but had always been so serious about everything. It was fun to watch him stumble about for once. He had never danced during these nights, and no one had ever pushed him so but Cera was feeling daring tonight.

She pushed him toward the bonfire, the flat of her head pushing against his flank to nudge him closer and closer to the flailing Eury and the spinning Eury. She could see that Orion had already caught sight of them, his amber eyes alight in what could only be mischief.

Silhouette really wished they would let him sit by down. He was bemoaning his fate at the moment, sandwiched between Eury and Orion. Eury had a look on her face that, despite Silhouette knowing she was only playing, make a hot blush creep up his neck and blossom on his cheeks. He was thankful for his thick winter coat that disguised the obvious red tinge, but he was sure Eury and Orion both knew it was there. Orion, who was currently pressed up against Silhouette's side, making plays at tugging on pieces of Silhouette's and Eury's mane in turn.

Sihouette tried to relax and match their movements. He knew his attempts fell flat based on the smile that spread even wider across the older stallion's face. His mother and Cera stood to the side now instead of laying back down into a pile and had joined in on the singing. Cera was evening softly tapping her hoof against the hard, snow-packed ground now in time with Nora and Auri's singing.

Isiyah snorted as he watched the bumbling young stallion get bullied to dance with a combination of Eury and Orion. The fey Eury was back, the secretive smile back on her face as she twirled around the embarrassed and fumbling stallion. He knew she meant nothing of it; the young stallion was too young and too close to family to tempt her into her game but he still found her act a ridiculous.

Isiyah could feel the warmth of the fire even from his position on the edges of the festivities. The night was still young and he knew from experience that the dancing could go on until the early morning light. Members of the herd would doze off lightly, before being awakened and rejoining the party. Some, notably Orion and that great bumbling fool, would stay up the entire night, too wired and filled with adrenaline do much else.

Silhouette really was horrible at this, he thought as he gave himself another horrendous wiggle. He wished his mother or sister would at least join him, he thought, as he shot them another look. His mother had a smile on her face though and the fire lit her up and made her look more beautiful than ever. With a sigh he continued his dance, not being able to begrudge his mother anything she desired. He took a moment, however, to give her a soft nuzzle and an uncharacteristically playful bump on the flank. She nipped at his ear in return before shooing him back to the bonfire where his two partners awaited.

The young stallion was getting better, Isiyah had to admit. After spending the last few minutes sending almost pleading looks to his fool of a mother, he seemed resigned to his fate. Weakling, he thought with another snort, as he watched the young stallion give his mother an affectionate caress. Isiyah himself had only known his birth mother briefly. By the time he was old enough to live on his own, he had already been living on his own. He had not spared his family many thoughts since. Despite his nature, Isiyah knew that family was one that you chose and chose you in return. Blood ties were only as strong as the emotions that bound them together and while Isiyah was no fool, he at least understood that.
