They were just a bit overwhelmed here, it was beginning to look like. Zeke jumped back from a set of viciously gnashing teeth, only for a sharp claw to slice across his shoulder from the side. Attacks were coming from all sides, and despite the beast being connected at the tail, it still felt as if it had them surrounded.
"Might have to switch to a more defensive position here." Although it was less might, and more would definitely if things didn't start to improve rather drastically for them. Even with the more powerful attacks coming from their side.
{Less talk and more action, Boil.}
Wordlessly the Mist obeyed, bringing the wide blade of the axe around for a solid sweep across the chests of a few advancing rats.

Harper heard Zeke’s suggestion of defensive position but before she could respond something heavy and large thudded across her back tumbling her forward. The dagger in her hand fell sliding across the stones a few distances away as a loud hiss erupted in her head.
{Hurry up, don’t just lay there worm we need to move now!}
Yanking the chain Harper she grabbed the hilt of the dagger before rolling away from the beast waving the blade at anything that dared to get near her.

"How exactly does one defend with a bow?" Austin was snappish as he asked it -- more focused on firing another arrow into the heart of the mess than on the conversation at hand. It hit, kind of: it was such a tangled little creature that most of the energy scattered throughout. It was hard to tell if he'd even really done any damage.
"Aside from standing back out of reach and firing, which is the sensible thing for archers to do..."

"Use it like a club?" Zeke suggested distractedly, reaching down to haul Harper back to her feet beside him. They were still a bit overwhelmed here, and it might well have been because he was the only intermediate on this mission. Rank and power made a a difference.
One of the many squirming bodies charged at them, and Zeke through his shoulder into it, knocking the thing back from himself and Harper before it managed to do much damage.
With Zeke’s help, Harper got back up to her feet, sore from hitting the stones previously but at least the creature hadn’t caused enough damage she was down and out yet. It shifted, charging at them both as she gripped the hilt of the blade tight enough to make her bruised knuckles go white her feet glued to the spot. Before she could brace for the hit, Zeke had stepped in front defending for her causing a loud hiss to sound in her head.
“Thanks. Sorry about that.” She stepped forward blade blocking one of the smaller heads from nipping at the older hunter’s shoulder.

Defense was the smart move, of course, which was why Zeke and Harper were basically holding each others' hands while the cretaures continued to attack them. The result was a scowl out of Austin, and a very not smart move: his bow shimmering just faintly as he drew back another arrow and let fly.
Instead of the usual splash of energy, though, this bolt dissolved mid flight, turning from an arrow to a splatter of blood that caught quite a few mice. As it touched them, skin boiled and fur melted, the creatures letting out terrible screams. AOEs seemed much more effective against this opponent.

Rain of Blood -- works as Swift Strikes. The arrow released from his bow hits as a spray of blood that corrodes the shield. If a shield is down, it can -- player choice -- cause flecks of rot on the surface of the skin.

Defense was probably their highest priority at the moment, but Austin really wasn't out of line when he fired off a rather impressive charge. Zeke had his own, it was time to utilize it, to bombard the beast with as much damage as they could before falling back and regrouping.
Stepping around both trainees, the Mist brought his ax around in a sweeping arc that left a blur of blue runes in the dim tunnel. Fear was released in a swirling, blasting rush. A mini cyclone that bodily threw the collective parts of the conjoined monster away from them, and right into the far wall with a shuddering smack of impact.
