"She might still be lonely, but at least she'll be warm. It's like giving a clock and stuffed animal to a new puppy. The toy because it's soft and fluffy like them and the clock sounds a bit like a heartbeat so they don't think they're as alone." he watched Gany peep into the holes in the box and smiled a bit.
As the clerk totaled up their purchases, Vaden pulled out his wallet and pulled out the necessary funds. Hmm...after treating Gany to dinner and probably dessert, he'd be a little short for the rest of the month. Not that that was a huge deal, he didn't spend a lot of money on himself, anyway, Gany was actually his biggest expense. Ah well, it wasn't that far to the end of the month and once the first rolled around he'd have funds in his account. He'd just have to be careful not to over draft himself.
He watched Gany again as he was handed bags containing their purchases and he smiled a bit wider and nodded to him. "You're welcome."

He blinked, looking back to Vaden as he explained. He had no idea you were supposed to give a clock to a puppy. How did it sound like a heartbeat? That was so weird.... but Vaden knew animals better than he did, so he just nodded in response. "Ah, okay." He adjusted the little carrying box to cradle it with both hands, not wanting to risk the handle on it tearing or something. That would be terrible!
"Are we going back now?" He didn't even care that this probably meant they wouldn't actually be going to dinner, or going to the boutique shops. This was definitely the best reward ever... Oh! He needed a name! Frowning he struggled to think of one... he'd never had to name something before.... It was a lot harder than he'd thought it'd be...

As they left the shop, Vaden holding the door open so Gany could get out, he shook his head. "No, I promised you dinner, so you still get dinner." he said. "I figured we'd stop by that little short order place on the way back, it's got those tables outside so we don't have to worry about someone finding out we brought a flitterat inside. Gods know they'd think we were trying to sue them or something or get them shut down for health code violations."
He ushered Gany back up the street and in the general direction of the bus stop. "Try not to let Ella and Foras handle her too much to start with too. The person you want her to associate food, water, and safety with is you, not them. Not that I think they'd be mean to her, but she's your pet not theirs." he then paused and glanced down. "What are you going to name her?" he asked curiously.

He blinked, then nodded. "Okay. But why would they think that?" He frowned, not quite grasping that people actually did that sometimes. Or tried to. Gany was ill behaved but not the sort of person who would think of doing something that actively malicious. He snorted a bit at the mention of Foras or Ella going anywhere near the poor little thing. He wouldn't allow that, helllll noooooo.
"They won't be allowed to." He nodded, "I wouldn't want them to anyway." He certainly didn't trust Ella. She was too baby-like for him to think she'd be okay with her, and well... Okay, Foras wasn't as bad but he still didn't want him to handle her.
"Um..." He frowned, thinking... maybe he'd just name her after a pretty rock like Vaden did! But. He didn't know any pink rocks-- no, it was "mineral".... he looked up at him again. "What's a name for a pink mineral?"

"Because people try to do that sometimes since wild flitterats are pests, and they want to sue the place and get money for serving them "tainted" food and all that mess." he sighed. "People can be very cruel."
He snorted just a bit. As the first kid in that room with a pet, Vaden didn't think he was going to be able to completely ban his roommates from looking and interacting with the rat, but he wasn't about to argue with Gany. This was probably the very first thing all his absolute own that he wanted 100%. He was also pretty sure Gany wanted to prove to him that he could handle taking care of a pet, so asking him to share was like telling him he didn't really have any faith in him at all. "Okay." he said simply and then let it drop.
"A pink mineral?" he pursed his lips for a moment as he thought and considered. He knew several pink stones off the top of his head but which one fit best? He then remembered the darker spots on her back. "Rubelite. It's darker red, but it's about the color of the spots on her back. If you don't like that I know a few more." nepsah here it also comes in a softer pink.

He listened to the explanation, and frowned. "But why are wild flitterats pests?" He really didn't understand... how was a wild flitterat any different from a store-bought flitterat? He shrugged, and returned to peeking into the breathing holes of the box. The rat inside seemed to be trying to get out, now.
"Rubelite?" He thought on it, rolling it over in his head... it did sound nice... Yes, he'd accept that. "Yeah, I like that one. I wanna see a picture of actual rubelite too."

"Because they're dirtier than a pet flitterat. They're more likely to carry diseases, have fleas, and other health issues. Your little girl and Charo have both gotten vaccines against certain diseases, they're kept in clean environments which reduces the chance of them getting fleas or other parasites, which they could spread to people. Would you find your girl as endearing and want to keep her if you found her in a dumpster eating trash? Would you want her anywhere near your food or possessions if she did? Granted I've managed to "tame" a few wild rats, Charo's father was actually the notorious king of the cellar, but it was a lot of work. He didn't want to be handled much, he needed several trips to the vet to be considered 'free' of any parasites, he ate anything which made him sick on several occasions. The only upside was that he was incredibly smart, like...ridiculously smart." he sighed. Kunzite was also really old...he'd probably be dead by the time Vaden went home again, a depressing thought. Old b*****d deserved a proper funeral, and he doubted his parents would give him one.
He nodded. "I'll show you when we get back to my room." unlike several other students his age, Vaden didn't have a phone and the internet at his finger tips at all times.

Vaden's explanation sort of made sense... but not really. "But couldn't you just do what you did for Charo's dad? I don't see why they gotta be worse than store flitterats just 'cause they live outside." He shrugged, perhaps he was just more forgiving with animals than he was with people. With people he didn't care for them no matter where they came from or what they said.
"Okay. Is rubelite a rare one?" He didn't know much about the mineral stuff outside of the fact that some of it was more rare than others. Which ones though were a complete mystery.

"Gany, there are millions upon millions of flitterats that no one owns. What you're asking is rather impossible. You could probably spend every day, for a week and not find half the flitterats that live in just this section of town. How would you find them all? What about when they have babies? Flitterats can have a lot of babies in a short amount of time, so even if you manged to find every flitterat on this block, in a couple months there would be more so you'd have to keep going back to areas you thought were 'clean' and starting over. How would you pay for all the medicine you'd need? How would you keep them from getting sick from other diseases or picking up new parasites? It's logistically impossible. Kunzite at least lived partially in a house, he wasn't as bad as a rat that lives in the sewer." he sighed. He could understand Gany's want, but just because he wanted it didn't mean it was possible. The hard realization that things you want as a child just are impossible sometimes.
Vaden had to think for a moment and then nodded. "Yes, it's a rare form of tourmaline, and the most rare of all the red versions of that mineral." he said and sat down on the bench under the awning at the bus stop. He checked the time on his watch and then the schedule on the wall and nodded. They had a few minutes before the bus that would take them back towards campus would arrive.

He frowned deeply, not liking Vaden's rebuttal but he had to admit that he was right... That just wasn't possible. It should be, though. "I guess." He shrugged, not willing to admit that he conceded completely to Vaden's logic just yet. "Is Kunzite another mineral?" He decided that perhaps changing that subject would be the better option.
"Oh..." A rare form of tourmaline... He had no idea what tourmaline was or what it looked like, but he liked the sound of that. A small grin came to his face... yes, that was definitely a good name, then. He set the carrier down on the bench, then carefully climbed up onto it before picking it up again. There. She was really trying to get out again... He put his hand over the top of it to secure the lid in place. "She doesn't like it in there."

Vaden hid a smile as he "won" the argument. He let it drop as well as he didn't want to argue with the freshling and he knew he'd already made him at least think about the issue he wanted to fix and how impossible it was in reality. Had he ever been that idealistic? He honestly couldn't remember, probably though. Weren't all kids supposed to think that all the world's problems could be fixed if you just tried a little bit harder?
"Yes it is, it's also purple." he said. He watched Gany contemplate the rarity of tourmaline and find it acceptable. Despite what Gany thought he was rather easy to read, or at least he was to Vaden. He supposed it was a side effect of prolonged exposure. He really needed to show him when they got back. He reached over and put a hand on the lid feeling the pressure of the rat trying to push up. "Well would you like it in a box?" he tilted his head slightly and looked over the box. It was sturdy enough, maybe when they got to the place they were going to eat at, he could put the bag of bedding on top of it to get her to settle a bit. It would be heavy, but not too heavy. "I'd say take her out, but that would be a bad idea right now...do you want to skip food and just take her back to your dorm and get her in her new cage?" he asked. It was really Gany's choice.

"Is it? Are there a lot of purple minerals, then?" He tilted his head, wondering why he didn't see more purple rocks, then. Or maybe it was that rocks and minerals weren't the same thing... or maybe rocks were just more common? So much he didn't know... But science really wasn't his forte, it was more that he just liked to know things from a distance.
"No. Not really." He shook his head, though he supposed that would depend on the kind of box and why he was in there. Maybe he'd be okay with it if he put himself in there and he could get out on his own, but... Rubelite hadn't done that and she couldn't get out until she was released. Vaden's question earned a shake of his head. "No, I'm really hungry. Do you think she'll be okay in there while we eat?" He looked back to Vaden again, one brow raised.

"There are quite a few yes. Purple isn't really a rare color for gemstones. Most stones with the right combination can go purple, some don't of course, but you never know sometimes."
"No one likes being a box really." he said quietly, then checked his watch while he waited for an answer and then looked over and nodded. "We'll hit the place then and grab something quick." he nodded almost immediately. "She will. I'm going to put the bedding package on top, it's heavy enough to keep her from getting the top open, but light enough that it won't crush her. She's just anxious and scared. Not that she won't be anxious and scared once we get her to your dorm, but at least she can go hide in her little dome for awhile until she calms down."

"Ohhh..." Then why on earth weren't there more purple rocks. Ugh. He didn't want to bother asking, though. Vaden would probably go on a long, drawn out explanation about it and he just wasn't interested. "Okay, that sounds good." He nodded. A quick dinner wouldn't be bad. Especially if it meant getting Rubelite home so she could stop being so scared... well, closer to not being scared, as Vaden had pointed out.
"How long does it take them to settle?" He tilted his head, curious.

He could feel the question hanging in the air, and the attitude from Gany that said I want to know but I don't care at the same time. How could a kid be so curious and yet not at the same time? It was baffling really. Maybe he should just get Gany a book and let it all sort itself out. He'd either read it or not, but at least if he read it his questions would be mostly answered. That sounded...safe...
He shrugged at the question. "Depends. Could be a day or two, could be a week. Just as long as she's eating and drinking and going to the bathroom you don't have to worry too much about her. It's if she stops any of those actions you should worry. However just because you don't see her doing any of those things in front of you doesn't mean she's not. She may be shy and only do them when you're not in your room or while you're asleep. If she starts being active when you're around after the first few days you can start taking her out and handling her for a bit each day. If she panics put her back and try again the next day. Don't rush it."
He turned his head as he heard the bus come rumbling down the street. He gathered up all the bags and then stood up preparing to get on board with Gany.
