He was shaking. Shaking and he couldn't see straight. Milo couldn't stop shaking. He was writing a letter to adopt a child. He knew how much he wanted a child to dote upon, and to make feel loved. He was just having a hard time putting to words how much he desired the responsibility of taking care of a child.

He looked down at his paper, which began thusly:

Good afternoon.

I wish to express how absolutely wonderful it is to give a child a family. Family is what makes a life meaningful. I want to bring a child a great family, even if it is just myself. I grew up on my own, and I know what it's like to be alone. I was orphaned as a child too. Just because a child is an orphan, it does not mean that the child is anything less than deserving of the love and affection other parents give their children.

He paused at his letter, looking right below the current paragraph, seeing quite a few tear drops stains. Hopefully he could dry them before he sent the letter in. He was crying as he talked about his youth. Maybe they would see the water smudged circles on the paper and see his emotions, and how much he truly wanted this, and how much it meant to him.

Now, I may not be very old, but what I lack in age, I make up for in experience. However there is nothing in my life that I could even begin to think about leaving behind, because I haven't found something to pass my legacy on to. I want a child to be able to think of me and be proud that I am their parent. They wouldn't even be able to tell they weren't my family. Because, as I stated earlier, I want to give this child a loving guardian who will always look out for their best needs, and make sure that they always get the education they need.

With that, I believe I have said all I can say to express how much this would mean to me. I truly hope you make me a priority in your consideration for adoption, and I hope you have a fantastic year.

I have attached my paperwork, as I have filled it out to the best of my ability. If there are any questions, I will be in to visit soon, and will be able to answer any questions.

With sincerest gratitude,
Milo.

He took a deep breath and wiped his cheeks.
If that didn't make him a good candidate, he didn't know what would.

He slumped back into his chair, as he folded the papers, sticking them into his envelope and preparing it for departure. He tossed his head back and closed his eyes, and gave a sigh of relief, drifting into a small nap. Hopefully the last one he'd get for a while.

Entry: It was quite a letter for Jaquline Vaan to write. Her need for a child in her life. The Chimera woman was absolutely distraught writing it. Still, this was something she needed in her life.

Salutations,

Today I an writing to you in hopes you can fulfill the void in my heart for a little child to call my own. You will have never heard of me. My name is Jaquline Vaan and I am a lonely woman who misses motherhood so desperately.

You see, a few years ago I lost my child, my sweet Nellas to an illness. I took the best care of him but it wasn't tough. He left me and my husband in the middle of the night. After that my husband left me and now I am alone in this house. I have no options to have children again. Nellas himself was a miracle child and that is why I am asking this of you. Help me become a mother again and care for a little freshling who needs me as much as I need them. I'm well off enough that the child will not want for anything.

- Thank you for your consideration,
Jaquline Vaan

On various spots in the letter were wrinkles, where it appeared to have gotten wet and dried out in the mail. Hopefully that didn't smudge any of the writing. But Jaquline couldn't write it again. She took a deep breath and mailed it off. Waiting was the only answer know.

Vüsala wasn't sure why he had gotten dragged along to the orphanage. One of his best friends (not that he had many) had decided they wanted to adopt a child and had practically begged him to come along. So now, here he was, waiting in the hall while his friend spoke with each and every child that was in the play room. A put-upon sigh escaped him. Why he had gotten dragged along, he wasn't sure. At least he had some of his medical notes to study during the wait.

After a good ten minutes, he heard a sort of sniffling cry, accompanied by a raised voice. An eyebrow raised and the notes were set aside. Those were never good signs. Standing up, the chimera made his way around the corner to where the sound was coming from. At the end of the hall was a group of freshlings and one of them in the middle was crying, tears and snot trailing down their face.

Eyes narrowing, Vüsala strode down the hallway. "What are you doing?" he addressed them. With a startled cry, they turned around and gave him wide eyes. "Nothin'! They were crying and we were trying to help!" The one in the middle sniffed and wiped their face, sliding out from between them and moved towards the chimera. Vüsala wasn't surprised when they hid behind him, clinging to his leg. A sharp glare sent the rest of them running back into the play room and he turned to the small child.

"There, now they are unlikely to bother you," he told them, kneeling. Sniffling more, they shook their head. To his surprise, the child pointed to his mouth and shook his head before trying sign language on him. The chimera shook his head, surprised. "Sorry kid, don't understand sign," he told them apologetically. The child frowned then ran off. Blinking, Vüsala stood back up and went to speak with one of the caretakers of the orphanage before sitting back down.

It didn't take long for his friend to come out, a wide grin on his face. "I found one; she's perfect. She's an October child, but that's no problem. Just gotta fill out some paperwork and get checked out before I can take her home with me. So it'll be a few days. Would you mind helping me out to get stuff for her? " It was obvious Saiful was over the moon about his adoption. Vüsala shrugged and gestured for him to lead the way.

Five minutes later they were heading out the door when Vüsala was stopped by the sound of rapid footsteps. Glancing back, he saw the child from earlier, with a handful of wildflowers. They thrust them at Vüsala with a bright smile, face flushed and unkempt. Mildly bewildered, Vüsala took the offering and gave the child a small smile. "Thank you."

Over the next few days, he couldn't get their face out of his mind. It was startling and vaguely uncomfortable. He would be making food and wonder whether the mute freshling would have liked it or he'd be in the middle of reading a horror novel when it would pop into his head to wonder which books the child would like. The wildflowers sat in a small vase on his coffee table, where he could see them as he studied. He hadn't gotten their name, something that irked him, but he wasn't sure what to do about it. Something told him he should go back and visit the child again. . . maybe get to know them more.

There was supposed to be a wedding at the end of the year. His wedding. But that had to be called off now. For he couldn't carry on with it when his wife-to-be simply vanished on him, leaving only a letter - no, it was more like a note really for there were only two words written on it. I'm sorry. And that was that. No explanation whatsoever. Five years of courtship that took place over the junior and senior years at the academy which at the end of the day didn't count for anything. Semaj was heartbroken of course. If some form of explanation was given to him for his ex-fiance's sudden change of heart, perhaps there was something that he could do to remedy the situation. But this. There was nothing that he could do about this other than accept it as it was and eventually gather up what strength he had left within him to move on.

Sitting on the bench that overlooked the garden of the orphanage, the baphomet began to mull over the screening process that he had to sit through the moment he stepped into the facility and expressed his desire to adopt one of the freshlings. He was upfront with what he went through during the prior few months - he didn't believe it to be in his best interest or the to-be-adopted little one's (assuming that they still thought him qualified despite the raised brows that he saw) if he kept such a significant incident from them. After going through that, he wasn't sure if he could ever find it within himself to find another partner again.

A little one however was another thing to him altogether.

Semaj had always had a soft spot in his heart for kids. In fact, he even had grand plans with his ex-fiance as to how many they would have. Right down to the various names that they would give them should they turn out to be a boy or girl. But that all was beyond him now. He couldn't imbue a soulstone all by himself and since he had no desire to find himself another life partner in the recent future, the option that remained if he still desired a little one in his life would of course be adoption. But that didn't mean that he wouldn't love and dote on the little one any lesser than he would had he/she been his own kin.

So it was on the bench that he sat, with his heart literally in his mouth as he awaited the outcome of the screening process that would determine if he was going to be able to bring one of the freshlings home with him this very day. If the orphanage staff deemed him unsuitable, what then? He really hoped deep down that that particular outcome wouldn't come to pass. It didn't occur to him that he was so caught up in his own train of thoughts that one freshling, a female one at that, had managed to sneak up on him from the side so that she could present him with a bunch of yellow roses. "Whoa... what do we have here?" He exclaimed in surprise, backing up a little until he saw the little freshling who was behind it. "Here... for you." She smiled bashfully as she offered the flowers to him again.

He accepted the flowers with a smile. "For me? But why?" There was a brief pause. The little freshling twiddling her thumbs as though she was deciding if she should speak up or not. "You seemed a little... sad? Flowers are pretty. Flowers make people smile." Semaj found himself a little taken aback by her words. Was his sadness so apparent to all that even a little freshling could tell?

"Thank you. I'm okay now. Would you mind telling me your name?" He asked. The freshling nodded. "Elnath. I got to go now though. Miss Elsa will be angry if she finds me missing from her class. Byeee..." With that, she ran off and Semaj was alone once more though it wouldn't be for long. "Mr Semaj? Your application has been approved. All that remains now is for you to decide on who you'll like to adopt." He got up with a smile.

"I believe that I've just met one of them. Could you tell me more about Elnath?"

Entry: (parent not certed yet) Shen had been mulling this decision over for months now, he was sure that he wanted to go through with it. It was a little later than planned, after all the cursed month had just ended. But perhaps that would mean all the last minute stones that had been awakened and abandoned would have made it to the orphanage by now. Not that he wanted that to be the case, he just knew it was a sad reality when it came to the cursed month. Nightmares from all over broke the rules and thought they could handle it, only to end up with a kid they could not handle or did not want.

After all he knew how that went, being a mutant himself he got strange looks tossed his way now and then. And his mutation was not even that startling as some of the others, he simply could not manage to appear totally solid. The geists could fade in and out like he did naturally, so it was not all that strange among them, the only problem was he was not purely geist though. It can cause problems now and then growing up, he was self concious sure. But he didn’t think he turned out all that bad growing up at the academy. Weather he was a catch stone or had been abandoned though was unknown to him. In the end it did not matter all that much did it? He felt like he could be a good single parent for a freshling even without having one himself. How he came to be at the academy wouldn’t change that.

Being a mutant himself made him want to try and give a mutant orphan a home if he could. It was not a guarantee but he just thought that perhaps he could give them a nice happy home to grow up in. Confident that he could cater to the needs one might have that the normal little nightmare did not. But even if he did not end up adopting one of the freshlings from the cursed stones he wanted to give one of them a home, a family. So many didn’t have one.

By all the gods he was nervous though. Writing into the orphanage had gone well so far, they had told him to come in today for an in person interview and to meet some of the freshlings. It was not a terribly long interview with the woman who had come to greet him in the waiting room. She was on the older side and seemed just like the type of person you would think of as a motherly type. Even better was that she seemed pleased with him after they were done talking. The only hurdle now, was actually finding the right freshling. And well, hoping that whoever he or she ended up being that they would want to be adopted by him.

Finally, after so long of thinking this over, planning it out, going through the processes. In a room surrounded by freshlings as well as a couple infants in the arms of chartakers. Some of them were running around with one another, others were occupied with activities here and there. In groups or by themselves they varied in race from purely one or the other, to hybrids so mixed up he could not pinpoint what all they were made up of. Some were very clearly mutant freshlings while others looked like normally little nightmares.

It was when a little group of kids ran by him that he saw one of the jump and fall over, startled when they realised someone was standing there. That happened sometimes, all he could do was help the small thing to its feet. Smiling carefully while the child stares and finally runs back off with its friends to resume staring. How was he even supposed to start? So many of them seemed wrapped up in their own little world. Oblivious to him even being there, oblivious to any of the hopeful parents there. He had spotted a couple who looked just as lost as him on the other side of the room. And a demon woman sitting in the corner reading to a few of them that didn’t seem to be a caretaker there.

Honestly he was starting to pondering going to ask the elderly nightmare that had greeted him originally which ones she thought might be good to talk to when he notices something out of the corner of his eye. It was, one of the freshlings that had been playing in the small group of freshlings running around, and playing what he thought he figured out to be a game of tag. It seems they had broken off from the group to come watch him.

“Hello there little one. Are you taking a break from your game?” Ah, the freshlings smile was so cute, and it only grew when he finally noticed them. The small thing nodding enthusiastically and toddling closer.

“Are you not there?” They were watching him with big eyes and a content smile.

“Not there? Oh.. Oh no I am all here, i’m just a little hard to see.” Squatting down he reaches out to pat their hair gently. “See?”

“Mmm! Mhm. Are you always like this?” They were fascinated by him rather than unsettled, that was one step in the right direction. Shen’s hand had also been claimed by the little freshling who was examining this see through fingers closely.

“I am afraid so. I came out of my stone like this. How are you, do you like it here? How do the other kids treat you?”

“I’m awesome! I got lots of friends. But they keep leaving!” They were so cheerful, bouncing up and down while still holding rather tightly to his hand. “It’s good, they got homes, but I miss them.” Nodding as if they were stating something grand the freshling turns their smile back on Shen. “Want to color?”

“Oh, well yes sure. Let’s find a place to sit and some papers. Would you show the way?” It seems this little freshling had claimed his time and attention, already nodding and tugging him along as fast as they could manage to find some paper and crayons. Bouncing up and down when he was not walking quite fast enough for them.

Perhaps it was the freshlings who chose their new guardians rather than the other way around.

This was the day.... it was finally here. For so long the countdown had been looming over their heads for what felt like years, the days taking their sweet time to pass to the next. Even with day to day activities, routines, and commitments, the blissful little voice would constantly tickle the back of the couples mind, reminding them of the trip they would soon take.

Lim returned home straight away once he was able to freely leave work. He could hardly contain his eagerness all day, while tending to the shop he was employed to, and the flora that grew there. Even while mixing the herbs and prepping mixtures for customers and backstock, his head had been in the clouds. Of course this left him creating a few mistakes along the way, and irritating some who came to the small shop, but he was quick to apologize and remedy his clumsy faults. But who could blame him, really? The long awaited day had finally arrived! They day he and his partner would finally--hopefully, rather-- get to add a new addition to their little family.

The two had been together for years now, knowing one another throughout their lives as friends of friends...an attraction always felt between them. But when paths parted, and various acquaintances went separate ways, they were able to spend more time together. It was in this more intimate circle that the two could create a stronger bond, and truly discover what about each other had draw them together. Lim had never been a very confident man, rather withdrawn and reserved in nature, but friendly and kind towards those that paid him mind. Naturally caring, perhaps to a fault, he would never spare a moment of hesitation to give someone the shirt off his back if they needed it. Of course, such selflessness has gotten him into plenty predicaments that have not been all too pleasant...

But Edwin aids in the balancing of the pair. More of a realist, with intelligent, and witty ideals, he's less quick to give his trust in others. One to observe, and somewhat test others, he favors gaining all perspective and information before acting. A natural born leader, he isn't one to let others push him around, and won't bite his tongue when it comes to seeing something of ill-nature go down before him. While a little rough, and cocky to some, he's actually quite mature and caring when it comes right down to it. He grew easily fond of Lim's open-heartedness towards others, considering how walled he himself is from past traumas. The warmth, kindness, and sweetness from the other male made the strong sense of protection he possesses only strengthen. This made him create a vow to look out for Lim, and to never let that lovely smile, and spirit, get taken away.

Pacing nervously in the living room of their little apartment, Lim kept checking the clock that rested on the coffee table. Where was Edwin... he was late. Oh and he didn't want them both to show up late to their important appointment. Surely that would count off points wise! Or... how ever the judging process went there. He wanted to make the best first impression possible. Fiddling with his long hair that draped along his shoulders, Lim forced himself to sit on the couch, knees pressed tight to one another, braiding the silken tresses between his fingers to try and keep distracted for the time being. Thankfully, he was drawn out of his anxious stupor by the sound of the front door being unlocked and opened. Instantly, he was on his feet, brightening significantly when Edwin appeared, "Edwin..!" he exclaimed with a sigh of relief, hurrying over to his beloved.

The late to arrive Nightmare was grumbling under his breath irritably, something about work, before registering Lim, making his features soften and smooth to their usual relaxed state, "Sorry I'm late, Lim. Work tried to keep me longer. Had to give them a little lecture on where my priorities are." he chuckled with a rather smug looking smirk peeling along his lips. Meeting the smaller male, he bent at the waist to give a loving little peck to Lim's forehead, "So, are you ready to go?" he murmured gently.

Shaking his head, Lim threw his slender arms around Edwin, taking immediate comfort in the familiar scent, "It's ok, I'm just glad you made it in in time." another few rounds of calming breaths were taken, before he gave a little nod, "Yes, I'm ready. <3 "

The two made their way to their destination, a bundle of nerves and excitement, arriving soon enough at the establishment. Stepping out, both looked up at the adoption center, Edwin reaching to take Lim's hand for a squeeze and lock for support. Once they stepped in, both were washed with awe and delight at the sight of all the little freshlings. There were so many..! It was heartbreaking, too, knowing so many needed homes... hopefully they'd be able to at least provide one with a home....

While they were starstruck, Edwin's attention was pulled to a particular little one who was a little separated from the clusters that were dotted about the place. Lightly, Ed gave a gentle tug to Lim's hand to shift his attention to the one keeping to itself. No youngster should be on its own like that. Slowly the two approached the little one, Ed kneeling to a more inviting level, offering his laidback smile, "Hey there. Why are you over here all by yourself?"

At first the child was hesitant, staring up at the two adults with those big eyes, making no vocal sounds. But Edwin slowly plopped himself down near the youngster, while still giving it a chance for exit should they feel uncomfortable. Looking around, Ed reached for one of the nearby toys, a stuffed creature of some kind, and fiddled with its little limbs, "maybe it's a little too loud, or crowded over there with everyone else, huh?" he asked the freshling, while Lim quietly followed suit with his partner. Kneeling next to Ed, Lim had to contain his excitement, thus left most of the talking to the other adult, nodding along and offering support. The tyke watched between the two grown Nightmares, before slipping their gaze to the other children that were playing, squealing, and running about. Nodding slowly, the babe pulled the stuffed animal already in its possession closer, and tight to their chest, nuzzling their face into it for comfort.

With a quiet snort of amusement, Edwin nodded slowly, "Yeah, I get that." he replied, easily picking up on the child's body language. After a pause, Lim finally piped up quietly, "Do... you mind if we stay over here with you?"

The reserved little one slowly peeked over at Lim, staring and studying him for quite a moment, before timidly nodding from behind their stuffed animal. Unable to help his tiny giggle of delight, Lim placed a small hand to his chest, "My name's Lim, and this is my partner Edwin." he introduced, Edwin grinning wider in response. The child in turn fiddled with the little arms of their stuffed animal they were attached to, staring at the one that Edwin was toying with himself. After a beat, he toddled off just a few paces away, and plucked up another... quickly scurrying over to the pair again, to place the toy before Lim, and retreating back to their spot. Surprised, Lim perked up a little, and gingerly accepted the placed plush which resembled an aquatic creature of some kind, "Oh why thank you." he hummed.

"These sure are some nice stuffed animals, huh?" Edwin commented, twirling the fluffy tail on his around a finger, "You like these little guys, don'tcha?" he asked the now intrigued freshling, who nodded eagerly in response. It then went on to trotting off to gather even more plushes that it favored, placing them neatly before the adults, looking up to them for their reactions as they showed how to properly pet each one; scritching under some of their chins, and some of their ears, or along the spines of others. A little voice even finally emerged, very tender, and delicate, introducing the various animals too.

"Mila... Toni....Bebi....Lumi... Luo....Poe..." tiny finger placed on each in succession, eyes scrunching up as that adorable smile spread on the freshlings face.

"What a fine bunch of little guys you have here." Edwin complimented with a few nods of approval, before lifting his own plush inquisitively, "What's this guys name?" he asked, the freshling staring at it, before chirping up.

"Winston..!" he declared, shyly peering to Lim's, and smiling a bit more bashfully, "Booma..."

It was then that the freshling started to go into more detail on all the plushes that were in their little trio, explaining their personalities, how they related to one another, and the little world they lived in. Lim listened in awe, cooing praise to the youth for the astounding imagination they had. Blushing, the child hid their growing smile behind the toy they held. Really, it was darling to see how much the tyke had lit up from just telling their little story, and sharing their precious toys. Lim was already starting to get attached, wanting to know more of this brilliant little mind.

"You're a really creative kind, aren't ya?" Edwin chuckled, "and have some fine friends here too." he gestured to the lined up plushes, "would you miss them terribly, if you got a home of your own?" he asked casually, head tilting curiously.

The freshling looked along the presented toys, mind clearly processing, and mulling over the question. But a soft smile returned, head shaking, "others love them too... so they will be ok." the child replied.

So sweet.... Lim gave Edwin a look that was almost pleading, too nervous himself to say what was practically etched all over his face. But Edwin knew, and let an arm slip around his anxious little love's waist, to pull him near, "Well say, kid. If you'd be ok with a new home, and us, we'd love to give you one. Can make tons of more friends, too." he gestured with a head tip to the plushes. Lim nodded in agreement, "We.. would really love to give you a home." really, the child already felt like they were fitting into the energy between the two of them so well!

Eyes widening, the freshling stared up at the two, making sure they heard correctly. A home.... squeezing he plush in their little arms, their eyes were nearly slits with how scrunched their cheeks were, a subtle little nod given. "yes please...<3" they quietly murmured.

Howard couldn't pinpoint the exact moment when his life had become rote and monotonous. Maybe it was because he had never been bored by his typical day-to-day activities or because he had always felt happiest when his life had structure. In the end it wasn't any change within himself that prompted him to notice the rigidity of his routine. It was Amory.

Once he had become aware that one could set their watch by his daily schedule, he tried to think of ways in which he might shake things up. There already were plenty of entertaining familiars roaming around his apartment at any given time, and a lengthy trip just wasn't in the cards at the moment, considering he didn't have a proper job. When he first thought of another child, however, Howard was certain he was onto something.

Ten minutes later he was seated at his desk, ready to compose a letter.

Quote:
To whom it may concern,

Amory has a problem.

I should rephrase. One year ago, I was given the opportunity to tutor a cache orphan like myself. I was asked to look after Amory, a curious and headstrong little chimera, and it has been one of the most rewarding and educational experiences I have ever had.

Getting to the point, I have noticed of late that the girl is lonely. Every day is the same for her: I pick her up when class is done, we eat, and she accompanies me home for further study. I can see her now, hard at work over science and math, and I know that this work is her whole life. When I take her back to the dorms at night, she tries her hardest not to interact with her fellow students, eating alone and sleeping separately from the group.

I am afraid that I am not well equipped to teach a child how to enjoy the company of their peers. While I have made her a phenomenal scholar, I know that I am not the most social of creatures. With a companion around the house, Amory would greatly benefit.

Howard paused, pressing the cap of his pen to his lips as he thought. What he had written was all well and good, but no one just gave someone a child solely for the benefit of another without knowing what the guardian intended. He had to want this Nightmare too. And it wouldn't be just any Nightmare. There was a possibility it might be a mutant, needing more love and care than Amory had ever wanted. He sighed, looking down at his letter once more.

Quote:
I, too, am anxious for another chance to mold a young life. Helping to raise another chimera has been a wonderful experience, but she is not, nor will ever be, truly mine no matter how much I influence her. I long for a child of my own as well.

Regards,
Howard

Lavinia curled forward in her seat, her hands warmed by her thumb’s constant fidgeting. The back and forth shuffling of her feet on the hard floor echoed in the room. She was a bundle of nerves, overwhelmed with both excitement and nervousness. This was it; the day that she’d been looking forward to. Today she’d hopefully begin a new step in her life: being a parent.

She was sitting at the orphanage lobby, days after having filled out the paper work and undergone a few interviews. She was on her toes, as she was told that today they’d finally tell her if she was approved or not. Hoping to calm her nerves, she looked around the lobby, examining the interior design. It appeared worn and cozy, very unlike the cold, sterile hospital where she sometimes worked at.

Being a nursing student, Lavinia had worked with children in the past when she was a nurse’s aid at the hospital. She had experienced it all: well-behaved, ill tempered, or even beastly, children. But no matter the experiences, she eventually came to realize that she wanted to care for a child of her own. But wanting a child was one thing. Would a child in-turn want her as a parent?

Lavinia was at attention as one of the orphanage staff approached her. And as she heard the formal news of their approval, she was overjoyed. She was then escorted to the children. At this time of day they were out on the playground.

And quite a bustle it was outside too. Lavinia carefully observed the variety of children and their fun activities, like ball bounce, swings, or fort. It almost made her nostalgic. The kids were mostly in groups, preoccupied with their games. A couple of children looked curiously at Lavinia before turning their attention back to their friends. Lavinia, hating to disturb the children’s fun, was content to simply observe.

Lavinia then noticed a latecomer emerge through the orphanage doors. A small freshling who was transfixed to a book, as it practically covered their entire face. Lavinia couldn’t help but chuckle. The little one’s passion for reading was to be admired, given how evident it was. But the child, being distracted, failed to notice a bundle of jump ropes on the ground across their path.

Lavinia let out a small gasped as she watched the young freshling’s feet got tangled and fell to the rough ground, their book shot out of their hands. She quickly walked over to the child’s side with one of the orphanage supervisors, looking to check for injury or to simply comfort them. As she approached she could hear the suppressed sob welling up in their chest, as well as see the tears that were tempted to spill over.

“Hey, are you okay?” Lavinia asked tenderly as she and the staff helped them up.

The freshling looked up and was surprised by the unfamiliar figure. They shyly looked down as they let out a pitiful “No”
“Well let’s check and see what’s wrong.”, Lavinia said assuring.
“Miss Lavinia is a nurse, Edel. So she knows what she’s doing.” commented one of the orphanage staff.
“Edel? That’s a cute name”, Lavinia complimented.
“Thank you”, the child said as they fully stood up, Allowing Lavinia to see a few rough scrapes across their knees.
“You look to be alright Edel. These scratches will need to be cleaned though.”
“What about –hic- my book?” the child asked.
Lavinia was perplexed by the child’s question, but regardless, she got up to get the book, which had landed safely on the cushioned flooring that surrounded a portion of the playground. The book didn’t seem scratched up or torn. How unfortunate that the book's owner hadn’t landed there instead.
“Looks like it faired better than you”, Lavinia said as she handed it back to Edel, who examined the book for themselves, eventually feeling relieved to not find any damage either.
“Let’s get you cleaned up Edel”, spoke one of the staff. “Would you like to help, Ms. Lavinia?”
“Sure! It is what I do after all”. Lavinia agreed with a smile. The other children on the playground still seemed preoccupied, and if she could help one of the kids, why not? They seemed sweet enough.

And so Edel, Lavinia, and a supervisor went inside to address Edel’s injury, utilizing a first aid kit back in the lobby.

“So, that must be a really good book you have there.” Lavinia said curiously as she dabbed at the scrapes. Edel winced as they felt the stinging reaction of the disinfecting agent. “You seemed very intent on reading it”.

“It is! It’s my favorite”, Edel said, hugging the book close to their chest, then holding it out in front of them to show Lavinia. She could see the cover, which looked bright and colorful. It didn’t look unlike a book that would have piqued Lavinia’s interest at Edel’s age.

“I’ve never read that before. I’ll have to go check it out”, Lavinia said thoughtfully. It looked like it would be a cute read. Lavinia reached into the Aid kit and placed some bandages on Edel’s knees.

“There, all done!”

“Thank you. Miss…La…” The little one seemed to struggle with her name” “Lav…Lava.”

Lavinia smiled, so amused by the nickname that she saw no need to correct the child.
“You’re welcome”, Lavinia smiled, handing the kit back to the staff member.

“Uhh, I could read the book to you now… if you want”, Edel sheepishly offered.

“That sounds like it’d be fun”, Lavinia said. She looked to the supervisor for the okay.

“Visiting hours don’t end for quite a while”, the supervisor responded.

“Well then, let’s go find a comfortable spot outside.”, Lavinia said as she headed to the doors to the playground. Lavinia was surprised as she felt a tight grip in her hand, looking down to find Edel’s hand clung to hers, a huge smile across their face. It was infectious, as Lavinia couldn’t help but smile as well.

Edel’s excitement seemed to overcome them as they began to hasten their pace to the door, almost dragging Lavinia behind her.

“Whew.”

The sign for the bakery was turned off, everything was tidy up and bread was currently rising in the fridge. Everything was ready for tomorrow morning breakfast rush. It was another long at the bakery for Pan. Running this place on her own was proving to be a challenge, but it was one that little baphomet woke up eagerly to every morning. She dusted some flour from her apron as she hung it up and then made her way up stairs to her living quarters. That was one nice part of owning this place, home was never too far away. She grinned happily as she plopped down on her couch and planned to watch a little tv before bed. She didn’t realize how tired she was and soon her long lashes would bat their way to sleep.

Pan found herself in a soft serene dreamland. She couldn’t quite tell where she was, but there was someone with her. Someone very familiar, warm and sweet. She had no name to put to the face and even stranger there was not really a face...or body for that matter. It was purely an energy and one that Pan could honestly say she was absolutely in love with. They spent what felt like hours together, dancing, spinning, giggling and just enjoying each other company. The dream visitor would soon tug at her sleeve and Pan was now crouching by their side. In a whisper she heard. “You have to wake up now, but promise you’ll find me again one day.” The words didn’t quite make sense, but for some reason she felt sad. Her new friend faded away and then Pan’s eyes started to tear up.

The baphomet suddenly woke up, tears now making their way down her cheeks. She used her sleeve to wipe them away, but was still left confused and unaware that she had even fallen asleep. The warmth in her chest remained and it called for her to act quickly. On her nightstand there was a pen and a piece of paper so she sat down and began to write.

‘To my Dearest,

I don’t know you yet, but I have already met you in my dreams.
I didn’t know that you were missing from my life until this moment,
but from this moment I promise that I won’t stop looking until I find you.

Sincerely and Always,
Your Loving Mother’

Pan gently folded the letter up and left it on her bedside table. Her eyes lingered on the paper even after she turned off the lights and crawled into bed. Now it was really time for sleep, tomorrow would be another long day at the bakery and now she would be getting up even earlier to turn visit the adoption agency. Pan was going to be a mother.

Do Not's: Adi and Jhin are open for anything.

Entry: Adine closed her eyes as she leaned back against the building’s wall. She took a deep breath, held it in and then slowly released it. “I will not cry,” she mumbled, mostly, to herself. It was a mantra she kept repeating in her head and yet it was doing no good. Adi reached up and swiped away the first of many tears she was sure she would shed. The fallen nightmare’s wings shuddered as her chest ached and she felt like she could (and would) collapse to her knees. She felt as if she was lost and being torn apart. Nothing could have prepared her for the news she’d just gotten and Adi almost didn’t want to believe it.

The magics inside of them were the problem. They would, and could, never imbue a stone. She wrapped her arms around her middle and sobbed. Her fiance and her had been trying so hard to imbue a stone. Eventually they had decided that it was time to seek professional help. After all, if something was wrong with one of them, a doctor could fix it. Right?

Wrong. Adi wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out. Her dreams of having a child of her own were gone. She sucked in a breath as she straightened herself back up and wiped at her eyes. She needed to go home. She needed to tell Jhin. Pushing away from the wall — her sole support at the moment — Adi’s body moved almost as if on its own and before she even realized it, she was pushing through the front door of their home. The moment she’d opened it, she’d come back to herself and in another instant, she heard footsteps above her. Her gaze jerked over to the stairs just in time to see her fiance, Jhin, appear.

It was almost instantaneous. She felt her legs buckle beneath her and her knees hit the floor hard, eyes clenched shut as she sobbed and gasped for breath. “Can’t…” Her body shuddered when she felt arms slip around her and heard Jhin’s voice. Something inside of her cracked further and she clung to him — her rock. “Can’t have children…” She felt herself being lifted, heard Jhin’s deep, soothing voice as he murmured to her. Adi curled up the moment she was laid on the bed. When she felt the mattress sink beside her, she rolled over and tucked close to her mate. They remained like this the rest of the night — Adi a complete mess and Jhin comforting her while, at the same time, his heart broke in two as well.

Eventually sleep overtook them both and when morning came, the sun shined brightly through their window. Adi awoke to an empty bed, head hurting and eyes still puffy from the night before. She rubbed at her face as she pushed herself up into a sitting position and looked around. The morning, as it seemed, was almost over and the sun was shifting into the afternoon (as evident by the position it was in in their bedroom). She’d slept the morning away — something she hadn’t done since her early university years. Groaning, she slipped out of the bed and padded over to the bathroom attached to the bedroom.

“Adi?”

Jhin’s voice traveled into the bathroom as Adi stood staring at her god awful reflection — she looked like death warmed over. “Mmm…” Making a face at said reflection, she turned away and headed out of the bedroom. As she stepped out, comforting smells wafted up the steps and surrounded her. Jhin, bless his heart, had been cooking and she’d woken up just in time to fill her belly — which decided, at that moment, to make itself known. When she stepped into the kitchen, she noticed the papers scattered all over the table. Running a hand over her hair and smoothing over it, she glanced away from it and over to Jhin. “You didn’t have to…”

“Tch.” He shook his head as he moved over to her and wrapped his arms around her waist. When he tugged her in for a small, good morning kiss he felt her tense slightly in his arms. Holding back the frown that wanted to surface he pulled away and moved over to the food. “I didn’t want to wake you, so I ran a few errands.” His gaze flit over to the table covered in papers. “And then when I came home, and you were still asleep, I decided to cook something and hoped you’d be up soon.” Jhin gave her a small smile as he prepared them both plates and carried them over to the table. He somehow managed to clear off a couple of spaces and ushered for her to sit. “Eat, hm?”

“But I’m not hun…” At that moment Adi’s stomach decided to rumble (rather loudly) and betrayed her. Her cheeks flushed and she sat down. “Ok, maybe I am. I just…” She trailed off as she picked up her fork and pushed around at the food on her plate. “I’m sorry I failed you as a future wife….”

Jhin blinked, as he glanced up, and frowned. “Adi, how on earth could you think you failed me?”

Her brows knit together and she stabbed at her food with her fork. “I can’t help give you children.”

Jhin snorted and laid his fork down, gathering up the papers beside him. “I love you, Adi. Nothing will ever change that. Besides, it’s not just you. There’s something wrong with my magic as well. The doctor said so, hm? And besides, there’s still a way.”

Adi’s body tensed as her gaze jerked up to pin a glare on Jhin. “Don’t be stupid, J. The doctor said it was impossible. We’re...broken.”

Jhin shook his head and held out the paper that was on top.

“What’s this?”

“Read it.” Adi huffed but let her gaze trail to the paper now in her hands. As she read over it, she felt something flutter and come alive in her chest. What she once thought was forever broken, now felt like it was stuttering back to life. “Adoption…?” She glanced up to Jhin, tears already falling. “Would you really…? They wouldn’t be our blood…”

Jhin shook his head and laid the rest of the papers down in front of her. “That doesn’t matter to me. If we adopted they’d still be ours. That’s what matters. If it’s something you’d want to do, I’d be more than happy with that.”

Adi shuddered, closed her eyes and took deep breath. Maybe all hope wasn’t lost. In her heartache, she’d completely forgotten about adoption. There was always children out there that needed a home — that weren’t wanted by their birth parents. It wasn’t fair...why would you imbue a stone and then just abandon that child? She’d never understand some people but...those people were restoring her faith. Maybe, just maybe, things would work out.

They finished their food, talking about their options and going over various papers that told all about what adopting entailed and what kind of children were available. To Adi, she didn’t care what race they were or what they looked like. At that moment in time, all she wanted was to give a child a home. Over the next few weeks they visited orphanages and met many children. After many visits, they finally decided to sit down and write a letter — Adi deciding on what it would say.

        To whomever it may concern,

We have visited many times and over the course of this past month or so we have come to the conclusion that we would like to adopt from your orphanage. We have tried several times to imbue our own stones but, after a visit to the doctor’s, I found out that our magics were, for a lack of a better word, broken. We were unable to imbue our own stone and therefore have had to turn to other options. Adoption, as my lovely fiance pointed out, was the next best thing. To give an unwanted child a home would mean the world to us. We do not care about race or gender or anything like that. So long as the child has a need to be adopted, we are willing to open our home to it. We hope to hear back from you soon and wish you all the luck on finding homes for all the children at your orphanage.

        Sincerely,
        Adine & Jhin

Entry: 1 of NPC Parents - to possibly quest for in the future

Everett fumbled with the paperwork the receptionist had given him to fill out in the main lobby. Since his wife Carri had important matters to attend to at her studio, it was up to Everett to visit the orphanage today, to at least fill out the basic processing forms. Of course along the way, Everett started getting cold feet about the matter, as one always gets when they worry or doubt about their capability of being a decent parent.

Everett and Carri had been happily together for some time, running a used books store while Carri managed her artistic career in her studio. After graduation and reaching a point of stability with their new life and business, it was now considered time to possibly start raising a family. In fact, it was Carri who had first proposed adopting a child at the orphanage. While he truly loved the idea, Everett was just worried if it was possibly too soon. Or perhaps it was best to throw caution to the wind. Everett almost wished Carri was here with him to give him the confidence of his decision; he couldn’t help but second guess himself.

As he thought about these things while writing on the paperwork, a sudden hustle and bustle was heard, and Everett turned his head to see a freshling running down a hallway, right towards the lobby. Further in the distance he could vaguely hear a couple caretakers call out to who he assumed was the ‘fugitive freshling’. He couldn’t help but watch the spectacle, and as the young one got closer he could see them holding a crayon up against the wall as they ran down the hallway, making one long continuous line. An artsy rebel, huh?

The Freshling appeared to notice him, and acted quickly.
“Mistuh, please hide me!” the little one said urgently, and before he could say, do, or object to anything, she already huddled herself next to him and his seat in an angle that she hoped would hide her from the caretakers. Everett could only blink, as he heard a couple pair of footsteps follow not far behind, and he instead kept his eyes on his clipboard until a couple figures called for his attention.
“Excuse me, Sir. Have to seen a little freshling pass by this way, and if you know where they went?” The caretaker asked.
Everett looked up at them almost in bewilderment.
While the best thing to do was expose the wall doodler of her whereabouts, he was also rather curious of how this situation came to pass, and thought, perhaps it wouldn’t do much harm in extending their search for just a little bit longer, surely? “Oh I’m quite sorry, Ma’am, I’m afraid I was rather involved with my paperwork, I wasn’t aware of anyone passing by” he replied with a sheepish glance, patting his hand down on the clipboard for emphasis. “I would suppose though that they perhaps went down that hallway?” He pointed to the hallway doors not far from his right, which he wasn’t quite sure where it lead, perhaps a different part of the orphanage?
The caretaker pondered on his words for a moment, “Yes, well, thanks you very much for the help Sir. Oh and I do hope you enjoy your time here.” She nodded, before her and the other caretaker followed suit down the other hallway.

“PHEW! Thank you, Mistuh!” The Freshling said with what seemed to be true gratitude, using the back of her wrist to wipe the supposed sweat off her forehead, then dusting off her sweater from sitting on the floor.
“No problem,” Everett replied, with a little friendly smile on his face, “May I ask though as to just what happened to you, uh… little one?”
She pouted, crossing her arms as she thought of the events earlier. “I just wanted to stay inside and draw, but it was time for outdoor activities. I wasn’t even able to take my crayons! So I thought I’d run away to where I could doodle in peace. All I could manage to take with me was one of my trusty crayons!” She explained, showing off the solitary crayon in her hand.
Everett looked on in awe, “Ohh, I see! But…” he looked on with a little smirk on his face as he looked over to the alleged crayon line on the wall. “I don’t suppose you might have gone overboard with your creativity, just a little?” he inquired. Phoebe’s face looked a bit guilty.
“Y-yeah well, I was really angry, I really wanted to doodle and they wouldn’t let me!” she stomped her foot down, looking from defiant to defeated, turning the crayon in her hands. “You’re not going to turn me in now, Mistuh, are you?” her ears lowered, a gesture that could be read as guilt or sadness.
Everett patted the top of her head in reassurance. “Well little one, I don’t think you can avoid your caretakers here, but how about this?” He flipped his paperwork over to reveal a blank canvas for the Freshling. “As long as you promise to apologize properly to those nice ladies, you can spend a little time doodling here. How about it?”
Her face instantly brightened up, clutching the crayon in her hand, at the ready. “Yay! Thank you, Mistuh!” And off she went on the paper, while Everett thought to at least engage her in conversation as she doodled, especially since he didn’t have paperwork to concern himself with at this time.
---
“You know, you remind me quite a bit of my wife, she’s a rather headstrong artist, like yourself” Everett commented, observing her drawing of a vespercat.
“Really?” Her ears perked up with interest. Everett nodded.
“Mhm, in fact she even had a studio where she could paint, draw, and doodle wherever she likes!” his arms spread open wide, trying to gesture the idea of how big her studio was, the better to hold all her creativity.
She appeared rather awestruck, “Wow, I would love to see it!” She whispered.

Once again, footsteps could be heard in the distance, getting ever so nearer.

“Whoops, I guess now would be a good time to come clean, little one. Here, I’ll even go with you.” Everett offered, standing up from his seat.
“Awww, okay…” The freshling said with sad eyes, turning to a sheepish glance, perhaps afraid or even a bit embarrassed to face her caretakers. “Thanks for letting me doodle though, Mistuh! I really appreciate it!” She hugged his leg in thanks, not really quite able to reach anywhere higher, then peered up at him. “Oh, I’m Phoebe by the way!” Phoebe beamed while she held out her hand, which Everett accepted warmly.
“Everett”, he introduced himself in turn before escorting her to the oncoming caretakers. “Found her!”

The caretakers responded both cross and stern, yet relieved and caring when they finally found Phoebe, and in part wih gratitude with Everett’s help. While they were very disappointed with her troubling actions they had decided to let her off with a warning, and went on to direct her to the outdoor activities. As they left, Phoebe couldn’t help but turn around and wave farewell to Everett. “Bye, Mistuh Everett!”

He waved goodbye in return, and walked back to his chair to continue filling out the paperwork. Before he turned over the paper to continue writing, he observed Phoebe’s drawings, and noticed a doodle that appeared to resemble him.
Everett couldn’t help but smile.
