There was too much going on; he couldn't make out a real fragment in time and grabbed his pendant before the room crushed him.

After much fussing by the lifers waiting by the portal, Chel was mentally stable once more. Now she just felt guilty about abandoning Jack. She knew he would understand, but it didn't make her feel any less dirty. She felt like ******** Stormy.

When he appeared via pendant (and appeared to be, for the most part, in tact and not in need of medical attention), she immediately approached and made a gesture for a hug. She wasn't sure if he'd accept. She wasn't sure if the mirror was right.

Beyond a scowl at himself for failing to just grab the shard that had appeared in front of him instead of coming back empty handed, Jack indeed looked fine. He was mildly a bit taken aback by the gesture for the hug and had to wonder what she had seen in that mirror, but Chel was pulled in regardless of who was watching; it was as much of her as it was for himself.

"I got to the top room," he reported. "Just too chaotic for me to get the shard in time." His scowl melted away. "Something happen back there?"

The expression on his face scared her and for a moment her hands faltered. But his arms came regardless and she let out a breathy sigh of relief. He was okay. "That's great," she told him earnestly, running hands in his hair and letting his chest calm her breathing more than any runics the lifers had tried to run on her. "You came back, s'alright."

Mostly she didn't want to talk about it in front of a bunch of people watching their every move.

He could all by feel that heartbeat slowing down through their clothes. Good thing he didn't have one. "As far as quests go, it feels pretty tame," Jack assured her as he stroked her back, eyes almost closing completely at the hands in his hair. "Even with ******** mirror light things in my eyes and cliffs." And all seeing mirrors, apparently. For a moment there, he'd almost thought...

But then, dying would have been absurd. Insulting, even. Neither of them would have allowed it.

"Ready to try again?"

"Are you sure you want to take me?" she asked, detaching from him while still staying close. It wasn't an emotionally compromised question, but rather one that asked him to think critically about the situation. She had pendanted out. She had left him.

There needed to be serious consideration about whether he needed a new partner or not. There also needed to be serious assurance that she could do this. Because she wasn't sure she could.

"Obviously," he replied without hesitation. "You're Captain Boss today." Any serious consideration that should have been given seemed insignificant when it came to Chel. He trusted her; a hall of mirrors wasn't going to suddenly crack something so rarely given. Besides, he had taken a glimpse in a mirror shard: he had an idea of the things it could dig up, and neither of them weren't without their weak spots.

"Listen. Don't s**t out on me now." Maybe using her own words would help. "The place is unstable as hell anyway. Sometimes we'll have to pendant out so we can try again. Maybe a shitton of times." He read plenty of artifact recovery reports to know how good the odds were. "S'long as we keep going."

"Yeah... Okay," she said, bobbing her head along to his words like they were gospel truth. "You too alright? Don't be afraid to leave." Not leave for good, she reminded herself. Small exchanges for bigger prizes.

She took a deep breath. "It'll be better this time anyways since you know the way right?" Convincing him or herself. "You need anything 'fore we go? Sit down a minute or two yeah?"

It was a hallway of mirrors and repeating rooms, easy to get misdirected or confused in as they had experienced. But Jack merely nodded his head. He knew the way—ish. That part had to count for something.

"Nah, faster we finish the faster we can veg," he said as he ran his hands up from Chel's hips to her arms. "You?"

"I been sittin' here waitin' for your slow a**," she informed him, "Been ready for forever."

She let go and took a step towards the portal. Looking over her shoulder she told the techs, "Well c'mon stop pervin' on us. Get the portal goin'."

They gave her very displeased looks, but fired it up nonetheless.

There we go. He pat her back as if to say sorry for that and followed Chel into the portal.

And right into the shrieking face of a revenant.

"Yeah, yeah, we ******** heard you," Jack groused as he summoned.

While Jack seemed rather nonchalant about it, Chel was very freaked out by having teeth and screaming right in front of her face.

She immediately jumped forward and swung, not even bothering with arrows, but instead using the blade of her bow.

Chel's quick reaction didn't leave him much room to swing, but he managed to chip the edge of one of the ghost's frames with a quick stab.

Working his way to the other side, he worked in tandem with her to keep it constantly turning to focus on one of them. When he saw his chance, Jack thrust forward with his full weight behind it, spearing the revenant through with a few helpful pushes through its mirror armor. Shrieking, the ghost dissipated into little shards that fell to the floor.

He stuck a finger in his ear with a grimace. "******** dramatic things, Jesus."

"That makes two dramatic ******** in the room," she told him. "After you asswipe."
