Arden could only smile faintly as he listened, palms still in the grass. He wasn't sure he had ever been to a proper haunted house before, but it generally took a lot to get him scared. Heights were familiar to him, and his strong tail and razor-sharp talons made him at ease with most threats. It also helped he was usually a head taller than any other races that approached him. "My grandmother never let me say I disliked something until I tried it once," the Chimera offered reassuringly, not judging her for her fears. Not everything was everyone's cup of tea. He fell quiet though, unsure if Sparrow would push him about his family. Had he really intended to say that?
"Don't worry about it," the brunet assured. "I uh, have a hard time walking away from Nightmares in need sometimes." He shook his head a little at himself, ears twitching the slightest. "I would have felt guilty leaving you there like that." Arden offered her a smile with a bit of teeth before going back to observing the Academy at the top of the hill, briefly glancing to Muffin. "Aside from my classes, I can't say I've ever mingled much either," he admitted, frowning a little in thought. Arden didn't think of himself as shy but he rarely put himself out there. Then again, it only took a second of thought for him to be reminded he was a giant walking oddity on campus, and he had it all rationalized again. While it took a while to get his temper going, he didn't really know anyone who could take their peer's scrutiny without feeling inferior.

Sparrow looked curiously over to Arden, wiggling her toes. Grandmother? What, like a real one? "You have a family?" she asked. Of course he'd spoken in the past-tense and Nightmares often called each other by familial roles, but 'grandmother' was odd. That spoke to a mother and a father, which most students on campus lacked. The grand majority of them lacked, actually...
That was her only question, though. Should Arden choose to elaborate she would surely listen, but anyone with a family who ended up here carried the possibility for a rather tragic story. Rather than press further she simply moved on and addressed the other half of the conversation.
"Well, no wonder you want to go into medicine," Sparrow said with a smile peering off toward the academy. Muffin heaved a deep sigh and then stretched, limbs sticking out rigidly, even his wings. Then he relaxed again, now splayed between the two. "It's a good thing, to want to help people. I mean, that sounds silly, but to go out of your way to help people. Not everyone will. On the inside everyone wants to think they'd help but who knew if they really would? I try to meet other people. Really, I do. I think I'm just a little shy about it." She turned back to Arden. "But if someone else says 'hi' first I won't push them away. Or if they come to help, of course."

He hesitated slightly, but the Chimera knew he brought it upon himself. Sparrow wasn't in the wrong for being curious. He laid back in the grass to match her, looking to the sky. Curfew had to be approaching soon. "Ah, yeah," Arden kind of sighed. Sparrow was a grade below him, of course she wouldn't know the whole awkwardly getting shoved into Academy thing. "It's complicated," he decided on, brows knitting together. He knew now that he was older what it was really about, but part of him believed the original reasons why. It was just all frustrating, but so had been life in the Clan. "I have a mother and a grandmother back in Boreas," the explained, bringing his arms up under his head as he chewed his lip briefly. "Still a long story, but I was having some troubles fitting in on the mountain, so when my Grandmother got the bright idea these poor cache Chimera were lost without example, I ended up here. Transferred in? I don't know, I just ended up here and have been since. I plan to stay around here. I mean, I'm already used to it."
He trailed off slightly, hand moving to go through his hair, other still under his head. Arden turned a little to look at Sparrow, a small smile wiping out his blank and slightly frustrated expression. "It feels good to have someone supporting you," he reasoned. Arden was a bit modest - he really didn't deserve praise for being a nice person. "So, I can only imagine it's appreciated to offer it." He watched her yet though, believing her story. She had been pretty flustered when he found her out on the patio. Lowering the hand that had been in his hair, he reached to stroke Muffin gently, absently. "Nothing wrong with being shy," he assured, shrugging a little. "I'm always happy to talk too." The boy smiled a bit wider. Sparrow was relaxed, and he enjoyed that. "Maybe once you figure out your focus and your major, it'll get easier. What is it, birds of a feather?" he chuckled.

Sparrow listened without judgement, her expression open and welcoming. She hadn't really expected Arden to elaborate on his unique quality of having a family but she was more than willing to hear him out. Of course now that he had offered information she wanted to ask more. What was it like to have a family? She had no idea herself, being an average orphan of the cache. Did this mean he was going back to Boreas after university, or would he stay nearby? It must be nice to have love like that and support like that once you got out. Cache kids were more or less just tossed out on their own. She wasn't too afraid, of course. She had been alone most of this time now and was getting better at making friends. She was one of a great majority and so, in a way, she would never be truly alone.
Rather than ask those questions, though, she smiled back to him and continued their other conversation. "It does." She wanted to help people too. Maybe that could help her choose a focus? She laughed lightly. "Yeah, something like that. Hey, curfew's probably soon, isn't it? We should head back." She disliked the thought of leaving Arden's side just for the fact that he was such pleasant company and that he had helped her with her vespercat problem. She rolled over to push herself up and gave Muffin a scratch as she did. The feline gave a curious trilling sound and squinted at her.
Panda Moor I'm so sorry it's taken me this long to respond! I've been absolutely drowning in schoolwork. :c <3

Hearing Sparrow agree with his assumption, Arden could only nod. He wasn't afraid of breaking the rules, but he liked following them, and it was never worth the head ache that came with. Moving to stand as well, he leaned backwards to stretch himself out once he was on his feet. Sparrow hadn't been that heavy, but he figured he'd probably feel it in the morning. He didn't get to work his shoulders too often.
Checking his pockets, Arden made sure he still had his small book of magic he had started out with. He pulled it out a little, shaking his head. "I had wanted to finish this tonight but oh well," he chuckled a little, having enjoyed the talk. He waited for Sparrow to gather herself up before starting the climb back towards the school. "Are you going to be okay getting back?" Arden asked, the campus already quiet for the evening as everyone either settled in with homework or for bed. He figured his roommates would probably be up studying yet, while he himself was going to crawl right into bed. Their search had been a little exhausting.
grasshopper pie No worries, mine has been cray too. ;v; I'm actually off to run out the door to class now for six hours. Bleh! Let me know if you ever want to do something again with these two.

Sparrow offered an apologetic smile as she rose. She hadn't really noticed the book Arden had in his hands. She'd probably interrupted a quiet evening with her caterwauling. Still she was grateful that he had helped. Maybe she could make it up to him some time?
"I'll be fine," she assured her Chimera companion, "Thanks again for everything." Rather than allow Muffin to walk freely with her, she picked the cat up with an annoyed flutter of its wings and decided to carry him home. The freshlings would undoubtedly be in bed by now but she really didn't want to risk it. The next time she had some free time she'd have to buy a vespercat harness. She never wanted to do this again.
As they parted ways over the crest, Sparrow smiled and waved goodbye. Huh. Had she just made a friend or burdened a stranger? She wasn't totally sure.

He smiled a little, having no issues helping her out. Waiting for Sparrow to disappear towards her dorm building, Arden only waited a beat before heading back towards his own, sliding his hands into his pockets. Hopefully he'd have a chance to catch Sparrow around again, for he didn't have very many friends around the Academy.
