"Never ever," he agreed cheerfully as he licked his fingers of icing remnants. Maebe's duality in that regard had long been accepted, for better or for worse. "I'll definitely getcha pina colada, no worries. Dunno when exactly, maybe end a'the month? But definitely."

It was important not to go a summer without drinking at least one.

"How's the day been treatin' ya?"

She was up in the air, and it was disorienting enough to shut her up for several seconds, just to keep from passing out. When her mind stopped swimming (it never really stopped) she leaned in, and pressed her lips gently against the curve of his ear.

"You're right." She whispered out, in a voice that did not match those particular words. She turned just enough to brush her nose up that curve, and then tugged at the lobe softly.

"We should definitely go back to my place. My bed's much better."

"Boring. I was pretty confident it would still be." She felt the urge to get away suddenly crawl under her skin, and forced it down with a slow bite of the doughnut. "Then you offered your fireworks. Go make it not boring for me."

"Ahah..." His face, already pink from drinking, was slowly turning towards red from his cheeks to his ears. "N-Not what I meant," Dawson said as they met the humid night air. Taking his shirt off sounded like a great idea--or it would have if he hadn't had Maebe there.

"'Sides, uh...I-I bet drunk foolin'," he couldn't even say the word, "ain' as fun, huh? You'd wanna remember."

"Yes, ma'am!" With a patriotic salute, he leaned over and grabbed two sparklers, offering Maebe one. Smiling boyishly, Dawson produced a lighter and got them started.

For all the exuberance he had, one might think he had never touched one of the things before.

"Kinda feels like a slice from home," he said as he gazed at the hissing, sparkling, beautiful thing, and traced shapes in the air. "Y'all ever had holiday traditions back home?"

She snickered, and rested her face flush on the curve of his neck. When she spoke, her lips brushed against him with each word. "I'd remember you. I'd always remember you, Dawson Grace."

But she wouldn't. She wouldn't even remember him getting her home that night, or the way her lips and tongue teased his neck every step of the way. She wouldn't remember her fingers losing themselves in his hair, tipping his hat right over his eyes until he couldn't see. She wouldn't remember wandering fingers and dangerous kisses. What she would remember, however, was that she was never going to get that drunk, ever again.

For some reason.

"No." She admitted. "We didn't celebrate things." There was a heaviness in the word things, as if to indicate there was more than just missing Fourth of July's in her past.

Maebe took a sparkler and immediately began flinging it around like a child, entranced by the floating sparkles it left in it's wake. Her mouth hung open in a smile, and the face of a broken woman dissolved into the joy of an untouched child.

"Can you see the lines it draws in the air?" She asked, her free hand trying to grab a hold of the comet tail of light just before it disappeared. "I'm writing my name in the sky right now. Can you see it?"

And maybe, hopefully, she wouldn't also remember the particular look in his eyes as he pushed on ahead through it, the fear and desire and guilt and more that made such a glazed, soupy, awful mess inside. That she wouldn't catch that dull shine of it in those so called windows to the soul while she busied herself with something much more tangible. That it wouldn't occur to her how much he would think about those vibrations in his ear, the spots drying on his neck, touch the strands of hair in a pale mimicry later, and wonder, and hate, and lament over once they were parted. (That she could sing already, no contest. That there was music there he wouldn't-shouldn't-couldn't join in but still would listen to because he was a willing fool.)

That night Dawson put her to bed and somehow, somehow, made it out without further incident. A lookover to make sure she wouldn't puke, a scrounge for a water bottle, tucking her in just because he could. Maybe he shouldn't have added a kiss to her hair, but wasn't he allowed small things? Chaste things?

(So much was being taken from him already; this couldn't possibly upset that imbalance, not something so brief.)

"G'night, Maebe Grace," he murmured, and that was that.

His lips parted, but he didn't know how to reply to that heaviness and eventually closed them again. Had nothing in this girl's past been good? He tucked the dark thought away in lieu of the way she broke into a smile, and he joined in as he paused to watch her go.

"I can see it," Dawson assured her, blinking the spots out of his eyes. "Cool, right? Just make sure ya don' get it too close t'yer face. Shield 'r no shield, still ain' a pleasant experience."

Then, grinning, he twirled his sparkler as fast as he dared, almost completely forming an infinity sign in the air. He had to be careful not to toss too many sparks their way, but if nothing else, staring at it left the image imprinted on his retinas, so that was close enough. "Used t'sync it up with one a'my cousins--I'd do that, he'd do the same but like up n' down-wise, right--so we'd form like this cool cross in the air."

Maebe watched him make the infinity sign, and she tried to do it too, just as fast. Then she hopped up onto her feet and started to try and do it the way he'd told her his cousin used to, but as soon as she started, her sparkler began to fizzle out. Immediately, the joy in her eyes fizzled with it.

"Awww. I killed it." She whined, holding out the burnt out sparkler.

"Yeah, sawry, had t'get cheap ones..." He could already see his was starting to fizzle out and swung it like a wand for its final moments. "Wingardium Leviosa!" he chanted, putting on his best accent. And then, just like magic, the sparkler spit its last.

Dawson chuckled and said, "Maebe Grace killed infinity, now tha's somethin'! I got a third one left if you wanna give it another go?"

"Haha, nerd." She laughed out, backing up until she turned to kick at the sand playfully. He offered a third sparkler, but when she turned to consider it, she realized what third one left meant. She shook her head, declining the offer with a sad smile.

"Not without you."

But the beach had her attention now, so she returned to kicking sand high up into the air, until it splattered into the ocean mist that reached out for her toes. "I was promised fireworks! Where's my big bang!"

"Oh!" Perking, he tossed the third one with the used sparklers and grabbed a firework, bobbing with childish glee as he went a short distance to set it up. Making sure it was sturdy enough that it wouldn't tilt in their direction, he lit the fuse and hastily retreated back to Maebe.

He practically vibrated with anticipation. It was Important that Maebe had a good fireworks show. And thankfully, this one didn't disappoint: for almost a solid thirty seconds, the beach lit up with various colorful lights as the firework screamed, spat, cracked, and popped a variety of different works. He was so pleased that it worked that Dawson couldn't help but applaud afterwards like a dork, looking to Maebe for her reaction.

Whatever she'd been expecting was blown away by the show of fireworks that didn't necessarily all go up into the air, but exploded in all directions and filled the beach and sky with color and light. Maebe went from grinning with expectance to wide mouthed awe, but every time a new pop or crackle hissed out she screeched in surprise and delight. Every. Single. Time.

It was a moment worth applause. She lifted her hands in the air and squealed as she clapped with him, utterly transformed with the delight of a child.

It faded, just like the fireworks did, and left her feeling awkward, and embarrassed. She chuckled under her breath, and gave him a gentle punch on the shoulder.

"They were cool. I guess."

even good, odd bad

Her behavior was so like Creedence in that moment that he couldn't help but laugh even more. He'd never understand why anyone felt the need to hide their enthusiasm, just as much as he was sure not many understood how and why he threw his around so openly.

"You guess?" he repeated incredulously, tipping his hat back with feigned confusion. "Well s**t, let's try somethin' bigger, huh?"

And the next firework he set up was of a different make, more robust but thinner than the previous one. Maybe he was little too hasty in its set up, or maybe this particular track of sand wasn't good for holding anything. Or maybe the wind just tilted it enough. Or maybe he didn't realize until it was too late that his foot had glanced off the rocket just enough to turn it their way within the last few seconds' worth of fuse.

Whatever he was going to say to Maebe died when he turned and saw which way the nose pointed and was quickly replaced with, "Aw hell, DAWJ!" just as the firework blasted off in their direction.
