"Gross," Chance deadpanned right back.
Finished with the starfruit, he wiped his hands off on his pants and went back to work on his squashy sand castle, smoothing a wall into place. Chance's gaze flickered briefly back to Claude, and one eyebrow rose.
"And here you say I'm evasive and vague," he said, rolling his eyes.

It was at that moment, Claude shot him an earnest grin. "You are. I'm giving you a taste of your own medicine. Tit for tat, hm?"

He gave her his stereotypical Chance look that seemed to be reserved for Claude. Slowly he lifted a hand in her direction, and then slowly, steadily, flipped Claude the bird.
And smiled winningly at her.

"Pretty annoying, isn't it?" Claude mused, like Chance wasn't giving her the Look (reserved for her, and that made her oh so proud), and flipping her the bird. "Now you know a bit of what I feel."

He rolled his eyes.
"If you don't want to tell me what's going on in that head of yours, then I'm not gonna guess," said Chance dryly. "I don't particularly care one way or the other."

"Chance, you're so full of s**t." She smirked at him, resting a head in her hand, and using the other to sweep some sand at the trainee's pants. "You do care. You sent me angry texts because I disappeared for three weeks." Claude trailed off for a moment, still not a big fan of talking a lot, and contemplating the best way to condense her thoughts and say as few words as possible. "Before Deus---I was a completely different person. A one-eighty. Then my brother disappeared, and I lost my s**t. I'm never going to be that person again, but being the one I was when I woke up here wasn't an option either. Those three weeks I was gone was time to think about what I want to do now, and how I want to go about doing it."

"Born and raised in s**t," said Chance grandly. "That's why I'm as successful as I am."
He didn't bother to brush away the sand, and continued working on his castle. "They weren't angry," he said mildly. "Annoyed. There's a difference. I don't angry unless severely provoked, as you would know." His hands pushed the sand, squishing it between his fingers as he listened.
"So..." said Chance slowly. "You're...like, what...reinventing yourself or something?"

"Successful." Claude repeatedly dryly, and just stared at him. Judging. "Angry. Annoyed." Toe-may-to and toe-mah-to in this instance. "Regardless, I'm touched you felt something at my disappearance." This was lacking any snide, and said in earnest, and at his deduction, she gave a nod. Since he was building his sand blob though, she verbalized it. "Yes. That's a wonderfully succinct way of saying it." She approved, and trailed off for a moment, glancing off at the horizon. "Figured it was time to take up more of my pirate admiration." She murmured. "Live for the day. You might not have tomorrow...and it needed to happen if I'm to survive here." Her lips pulled up a bit at that before fading.

He ignored her nitpicking and continued working on his castle. Chance's fingers were coated with sand, which felt itchy and scratchy against his skin, but it wasn't deterring him, his head bowed to look carefully at the wall he was currently building up.
"A good philosophy," said Chance in approval. "Like what you like, do what you like without regrets."

Claude couldn't help a small laugh at that. It was just so close to his own motto, which he said often, that it amused her. "Mn. Close." She murmured. "I wasn't having any regrets before, but...close enough." She fell silent, and in that quiet contemplation she felt the overwhelming urge to talk about her brother, who was avoiding her and closing up, and what she could maybe do about that. As great as this re-invention was for her, it didn't solve whatever the ******** was going on with Lex. As emotionally stunted as Chance was too...he was something she considered...a good friend. Someone she could, out of most, confide in. "...Have any little flags for your castle?"

"Regrets are never a good thing to have," said Chance, smoothing the top of the wall flat - well, as flat as he could. "There's little point in focusing on something in the past that you can't change. Focus on the present, and the future."
His eyes flickered to look at her during her silence, but Chance didn't break it; if Claude wanted to talk, she would talk, and he would respect her decision either way.
"Nope," said Chance, his eyes going back to his castle. "Unless you count grabbing some seaweed from the ocean."

Claude looked back at the waves rolling in. It'd be a real shame for that castle to not have a flag. Seriously. She placed her bag to the side, kicked off her sandals, and stood, turning in the direction of the water. The next few minutes were spent wading through the water trying to find some seaweed, and a stick. She was successful, and came back with both of these things, each item in each hand. Instead of taking her spot across from Chance though, she instead walked behind him. She then silently sat down cross legged once more, and leaned, lightly, for now, resting her back against his. The trainee then put herself to work crafting a make-shift flag for the castle. "Have you ever had any regrets?"

He only glanced up once to watch Claude wade into the ocean before he deduced what she was doing, Chance returning his attention back to his castle. It thankfully looked less like a blob now, and more like an actual building, the walls beginning to take shape.
He didn't seem surprised that she was leaning against him, eyes sweeping over one of the walls as he tried to shape it back into place. A hum of thought escaped him.
"Nope," said Chance, smoothing his fingers through the sand. "I thought I might, but I don't. What happens, happens."

She gave a soft hum in reply, carefully tearing the seaweed to make a little two-pronged flag. "You know...you're more credible when you actually have the experience." She teased. "Why should I take your word for it if you hadn't had any?" She clucked her tongue lightly, and then worked on carefully tearing into the bit of seaweed to slide the stick through. At one point she paused, only to lay the rest of the seaweed she didn't use on Chance's shoulder. "And don't tell me it's because you're ******** awesome." She deadpanned. Satisfied, she went back to her careful work on the flag. "Are you talking about regret from not doing something...or regret from a decision that was made, but didn't realized until further down the line?" She questioned.

He rolled his eyes, even though she couldn't see the action. Chance smoothed his fingers along a wall, and then, satisfied by the fact that it looked like a wall, he moved to the next one, shaping it carefully between his hands as he smoothed his palms along it.
"It's completely because I'm ******** awesome," he said grandly. "That's enough reason at all."
He accidentally pressed too hard, poking a hole, and hastily went to fix it as he contemplated Claude's question.
"The latter," said Chance. "Well. I thought I had regretted a decision, but things worked out, so I changed my opinion of the situation as a whole. I don't believe in regrets."
