"Nnng--have to," he replied through clenched teeth as her weapon found its mark again (definitely going to be bruising later), though he managed a little smile and couldn't help but perk at the commendation. "Like catchin' people by surprise, y'know?"

Maebe was faster. At this point he gave up trying to block her every move and instead aimed for making her pay for each attempt. As she swung for him, Dawson aimed the narrow, pointed end of the shield for the arm holding her weapon.

His attack was so effective, that it finally happened. Her arm gave in, and her fingers uncurled their iron grip. Thaw went clattering to the floor, and she stared down at the weapon for a moment, disbelief clouding her features.

When she looked back up at him, she wasn't angry, or upset - far from it. She was in awe.

"He is so mad at you right now." She giggled out, bending over to pick her weapon back up again.

"Really?" At first he was a little crestfallen, because Thaw was a cool dude. But Maebe's reaction more than made up for it. He sheepishly wiped more sweat off his neck and let her retrieve her weapon. It was progress; Dawson used to be unable to stand the idea of smacking people around, much less girls. "Uh, sawry, dude," he said, not sounding all that sorry for once.

When she was ready again, he charged. The battle was winding down, and his shield couldn't take much more according to Syn. Plus, well, Maebe did ask for him not to go easy, and he had done enough screw ups in this battle alone.

"******** him!" Maebe choked out with laughter, even as she was slammed into again. "He deserves a little payback for his s**t earlier!"

And yet, when she went to stab at Dawson again, her trident plinked away, hitting nothing but dead air - and then, ground. She was still holding it this time, but it was almost as if he'd gone limp - not that the weapon could do that, but it felt like he had. His trident prongs were dug into the ground by Dawson's feet, and Maebe just stared.

"I shouldn't have said that during a fight." She murmured in realization - but not apology.

Dawson opened his mouth, glanced at the trident near his feet, and then closed it again. Their argument wasn't something for him to try and step into--although frankly he could only say that because he didn't have access to Maebe's mind like Thaw did. Had the golem been out, he definitely would have interfered out of the goodness of his heart.

"Prob'ly shoulda saved it," he agreed, taking a step away and rubbing at the darkening spot by his ribs gingerly. "Think you can keep goin'?"

She hedged, considering it.

"Thaw." She murmured carefully. "I'm sorry that I said ******** you. And Dawson is sorry he knocked you out of my hands. Okay?"

She looked distant, as she waited for some sort of response, before picking up the weapon again. "I think I can," She spoke to Dawson, this time. "Let's see if he's forgiven me."

And the answer was yes. He had forgiven her. Just like how diligently he'd worked to restore her face to perfection, Thaw was on his best behavior as Maebe crouched down, and dug the trident up into Dawson's shield from below. She used the entire force of her body, until she was standing again, and tried to whittle the man's shield down with twists of her trident. It was working, she could tell, and when Thaw broke through Dawson's shield and almost dug into his flesh, Maebe desummoned him because she couldn't pull away fast enough. This, of course, made her faceplant right into the man's chest.

Again.

"I win!" She muffled out, hands flying in the air even as she was pancaked against him.

Just as one's wielder shouldn't insult one's weapon in battle, neither should an opponent apologize to said weapon, because in this instance it worked a little too well. Instinctively he grabbed the trident with his bare hand to pull it away, but the unpleasant jolt on contact, like he had reached into a fire, caused him to yelp and pull away. It was too late anyway; in seconds Maebe decimated his shield.

And smacked right into him again. So much sweat to be found.

Nevertheless, Dawson joined the cheer with a wheeze, weakly raising an arm as the shield was desummoned. "Woo! Three fer three fer Miss Mae Bee Grace! Unstoppable!" And then, after a few pants, "Thanks fer not skewerin' me, hun. Already feel like tenderized meat cookin' in the grill..."

"No problem" She chimed up at him, peeling herself off and wiping her face with both hands. She couldn't stop laughing - this was what she got for asking him to come out with his shirt off.

No regrets were to be found.

"You know I'd never hurt you." She paused, eyed his chest for a moment, and then patted the middle of it. "On purpose, at least."

"I know, I know..." He bent over and leaned his hands on his knees for a few moments, feeling free to make faces at the ground in pain now that they were done. He wasn't sure what he wanted more, ice packs or a shower.

Straightening, Dawson pulled his cap off and fanned himself with it, greasy hat hair still not enough to cow the cowlick. "Ditto, y'know," he said hesitantly, now wary of bringing out that glare again. "I know we texted, but...I like hearin' it in person better. We're good, right?" (Always needin' attention, Anne Marie accused.) "'Cause if you...if y'need talkin' more, I-I dunno, we oculd do that..." He couldn't read her in battle, and Maebe already was someone who was mercurial and could switch on a dime.

Honestly he wanted to just hug it out, but he looked and felt a little too gross to suggest it.

He didn't have to.

Maebe stared up at him with a mixture of annoyance and amusement, trying not to smile and failing horribly. The stutter in his voice made her heart clench because she just wished, more than anything, that things could be different. She wished he could feel something he didn't, and she wished she didn't feel so much for him that it was impossible to tamp down in the deepest, darkest hiding places of her soul.

One corner of her lips turned up, and she stepped back into his space, pressing herself against his body for the third time today, but at least this time, it was on purpose.

(But her arms stayed where they were, because Maebe was loathe to initiate a hug, even with someone she loved.)

"Dawson Grace, you're an absolute dork." She told him, with her cheek pressed against him. "But I love you. So we're good." They had to be. She really didn't think she could make it without him.

Sighing with more breath than he realized he'd been holding, one relieved Dawson gathered her into his arms and squeezed Maebe into a bear hug, damn the bruises. He tucked his chin and smushed his face into her hair and shoulder, perhaps a little overeager to show affection but unabashed about it.

"E'en though m'a stupid sweaty a**?" he asked, muffled due to their position.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 24, 2015 9:38 pm

If she hadn't let out that soft, telling sigh of content that threatened to turn into a moan if she wasn't careful, Maebe might have gotten away with all of that and not only second guessed herself.

His hugs felt like food for the soul. She even managed to wrap her own arms around him, but her own hug was pathetic compared to his. He was the undisputed king of comfort hugs, and she knew it. But his face was pressed against her shoulder and she warned herself that enjoying it too much would hurt later, so she tried to glean only the happiness from the moment, and not the threatening loom of pleasure. It was an uphill battle, but she was fighting against years of negative reinforcement. It would never be easy for her.

"Even though you're a stupid, sweaty, adorable, sweet, blinder-than-I-was a**." She snickered out, hopping up onto her toes and practically jumping into his arms.

"Awwwwwww--" Around the same time Maebe hopped, he pulled her up and somehow managed to squeeze her even tighter in his rush of gratitude. He wasn't buried in her shoulder anymore but perched on top of it, smiling from cheek to dimpled cheek.

Maybe it was best that Dawson could live in the moment without having to think about it too much. He didn't have to consider that the closeness might affect Maebe beyond just a great big bear hug, or that it wasn't comfortable to get pressed against a small cross necklace or Syn's toothy totem, or that later he'd realize he got to smush some excellent boobs to his bare chest in a moment of childish (if still guilty) glee, or that in the now his body was already protesting the pressure. He certainly didn't stop and consider that he could have said "ditto" again, or that the entirely awkward situation of saying "I love you" in any capacity would just bring the mood down again because it would have to get tagged just not the way you want.

What mattered was that he was a God damn good hugger, and it felt God damn good to hold her again, sweaty or not.

"Aight, Supreme," he said after he nearly suffocated her with affection, "what'd you win fer yer combo trio thingo? Slave fer a day? Take yer shift? Buy you another burger?"

"Yes." She demanded, leaning back just enough to look at him while smiling impishly in his arms. "That sounds about right."

He should have known better than to make a list, thinking she would choose.
