It was only fun until Chris brought out the mom glare. Then it was her being torn between fun with Jack and genuinely hurting Chris.
"Man Chris don't be a d**k," she called out. "Where you even gonna go when I'm carryin' your MRE?"
Did you even think about that Chris?

Chris rustled in his pack as he walked away, holding up a couple clearly familiar gross beige packages. "I'm always prepared," he called. Which wasn't entirely true. He wasn't always prepared. He was always prepared now. Never let it be said that he didn't learn from his mistakes.
"Come find the tent if you losers start to freeze. Caves suck at night."

Jack grumbled with a roll of his eyes. He motioned for Chel to get to her feet before he stood. "I'll help pitch the tent, asswipe, so get back over here. We're not splitting up this early into the mission."

"Jinkies," Chel deadpanned. She gave Jack's arm a little nudge. Thanks. At least for not being half the a*****e he could have been.
She waved at Chris and said, "You two set that s**t up. I'll go get us firewood. I been around here and Tensy glows." She summoned the bow as if to prove a point, lighting an arrow in her free hand like it was a torch. Then she walked off, leaving the boys to their business of pitching tents.Quote: each of u roll 2d8. one of the numbers has to match for the tent to be put up successfully. (IE medi gets 1,4 and dhs gets 4,2 tent is pitched yay boner jokes)

Chris huffed and returned to the clearing. He purposefully dropped the heavy poles on Jack's feet. "Whoops."
"Can you even set up a tent or do you feel the need to scan it first?" He asked, beginning to separate the poles methodically.

He closed his eyes, less out of pain and more to wipe Chris' image from his retinas for just one second, which was a lot more painful than any amount of poles. Girlfriend depends on a semblance of cooperation, Jack reminded himself. Girlfriend. Girlfriend.
"You're not even going to try and make this work for one mission, are you," he said as he picked them up and follow suit, planting the poles opposite Chris'. "If you're that mad your boyfriend didn't make the cut, take it up with her, don't spew your s**t on me."

He stabbed a pole through the canvas of the tent with more force than was necessary. Thankfully nothing ripped, yet. "He's not my boyfriend, he's my best friend. It might be hard for you to see the difference when you can barely function enough for one relationship."
He grit his teeth, sticking to things on his side of the tent set up as opposed to paying any attention to what Jack was doing. "And I'm not mad that he didn't make the cut," - he actually used air quotes, lord help him - "I'm pissed because you shouldn't make the cut."

"Yeeeah," he said, drawing it out as he worked, "here's some advice. As someone who held a grudge for about three years, I'm going to go ahead and save you some time and trouble: get over it, because I am here." And it was obvious he didn't mean just for the mission.

"Nope," he said, popping the p obnoxiously. "I'm going to fight it every step of the way, and you already knew that," he looked Jack in the eye, but only for a second. If he looked too long, he saw him bleeding red. His hands trembled slightly as he pushed the next pole into the ground, but he kept moving to hide it.
"The s**t you pulled doesn't deserve to be shrugged off. Ever."

Jack held the gaze and lingered even as Chris broke away, and somehow he knew his paranoia wasn't as irrational anymore.
"I did. But I'm trying to be civil for her sake." He got another pole up. "Hate me all you want, Axten, if that's what gets you off. But maybe suck it up long enough so Chel can do this mission without her having to worry we'll try killing each other in our sleep."

"I wouldnt kill you," Chris said, too quick. Jack knew. He knew app about the dream and what Chris had done. His hands trembled and he swallowed thickly.
"Just put the damn tent up," he grumbled, trying to cover up his nerves. If he knew, would be retaliate? Or worse, would he tell Chel?

Chris was given an even longer look, one that seemed to last even when Jack wasn't directly eying him. A silent, constant aura of knowing between them.
"Haven't gone camping since I was a kid," he said lightly as the last knot was made. "Here's hoping this s**t stays up."

Chel heard the bickering as she walked away- how could she not? They thought they were sly and covert, but it was a ******** cave and sound reverberated.
Jack and Chris had always been a constant, tiny problem in the back of her mind, but having to be faced with the full force of it just left her exhausted. It wasn't enough that they were going to essentially be extreme spelunking all day- those two idiots had to add on the role of peacekeeper to her plate.
The fight faded as she got further away and closer to the river, and once far enough she could pretend it didn't exist at all in the silence.
---
Chel came back with two armfuls of wood under each elbow. "'Kay stop makin' out," she called out from under the leaves she was moving aside with a foot to get back to the campsite. Cheerful face, calm demeanor. It wasn't fun, but it was what needed to be done to keep the train going. She let out a surprised muse, "Tent actually looks decent holy s**t."
The wood was thrown to the ground, hastily arranged and then set on fire with her runic torch. It wasn't exactly a well done campfire, but they only needed it for a little while and it would be forgotten by tomorrow. "Chris you wanna find a good log t'sit on or we just gonna hit the ground?" They weren't exactly afforded the luxury of camping chairs, but Chel didn't really mind the dirt.

Chris latched on to the escape immediately. "Yeah, yeah I'll gofind someting. I'll be back. " He rushed off towards the trees, throwing a cautious glance over his shoulder
