He returned the half toast with one of his own, Chance touching the bottle to his lips and taking a small sip. "I completely agree," he said lightly. "I mean, you're obviously an excellent example of beauty, Otto's a delightful mixture of hot and sassy, and it seems that nearly everyone I've passed has an extremely appealing level of attractiveness."

And for Chance, there was no sense of flattery or sugarcoating. Things just were what they were, there was no sense attempting to pretend any differently. He reached for a chip and popped it into his mouth, considering.

"Kind of a personal one, out of curiosity," he said, tilting his head. "Opinions on guys in what people deem to be feminine clothes and vice versa?"

"If you're going to wear a dress, you'd better be nailing it." She murmured. "Like, feminine clothes are made for certain curves. And there are guys who work those curves in ways that drive me wild. But the fact is, clothing is clothing. If you're wearing it, you'd better look good in it. Like, okay. I know he loves those sweaters of his. I get it. But have you ever seen Otto in a tank top? Like, that boy could probably wear a dress better than some women, but instead he hides in layers and layers." She giggled into her soda.

"I know it's about comfort for him. But for me, it's about style. And I will judge the ******** out of anyone who does not look good in any outfit. If I wore like, Dawson's flannel, for example. I would be hiding a whole lot of potential in there. It would be a waste. I guess what I'm saying is, I don't care what gender you are, I care how good you look in something."

She fondly remembered what Cami looked like busting out of a button up white men's shirt. "Mmm. Yep. That's what matters."

She couldn't think of a good question to ask Chance, so she chickened out. "What about you?"

He liked her answer, since it was similar to what he already thought.

"Otto does seem to like burying himself in his clothes," said Chance, a little dryly. "Though to be fair, I do tend to like clothes that aren't as clingy myself. Leggings seem to be an exception, I do find those outrageously comfortable, and I own several pairs myself."

He gave a little snort of laughter. "Not if you were just wearing a flannel shirt and nothing else," said Chance mildly.

He took a little sip of his soda. "About the same. I don't particularly mind what people wear, though for myself it's entirely about comfort most of the time." One shoulder lifted and fell in a slight shrug. "There are times when I like to rock a dress or a skirt, which is why I asked the question in the first place. I haven't yet worn either of those around Otto, but he's seen me in leggings."

He smiled. "Was that your return question?"

She let out a soft whine, a little embarrassed to admit it. "Yes." She huffed out. "I don't know. I couldn't think of anything. Questions are hard!"

She scrunched up her face, her little nose wrinkling with thought, and bit the tip of her tongue while she used every thought in her head to come up with a good-

"Okay, kill marry ********. Me, Caelius, Taym." She had nothing.

"They are," said Chance with a laugh, but waited patiently for her to come up with another one.

A single brow arched. "Interesting group of people," he said, grinning at Maebe. "Let's see....well, I heard Caelius is hot, so I'd probably ******** him. Taym would be the one I'd kill, and if I had to marry anyone, I'd be glad it would be someone as delightful and gorgeous as you."

Chance hummed.

"Okay back to you - kill, ********, or marry with...hmm...Finn, Ripley, and myself."

(Clearly Chance's group of good friends was somewhat limited.)

Their game of 20 questions had degraded so fast. Was it any surprise? She could tell their minds worked at the same speed. He almost reminded her of Jude, and she was hit with a wave of nostalgia that showed in her face.

"Ah, hum. Okay, easy. Now, don't be offended, because I have a higher opinion of the person I'd ********, than the person I'd marry. Plus, if I married you, I'd be depriving Otto of someone he cares a lot about. See, I'm thinking this one through." She was being smart about it - and that was kind of fun. "So I'd kill Finn, duh. I'd ******** you - in a heartbeat, by the way. And I'd marry Ripley. He's uh.. he's got some good husband qualities." She tried not to think too hard about that one.

"Okay. A real question. Like, a serious one. I asked Otto if you cared once, but I really want to ask you too." She leaned in, and held her hand out for the man to take it. "The fact that Otto and me are still close doesn't bother you, does it? Because it would bother a lot of guys. And I'm not sure you understand how important it is to me, to not get in the way of his happiness right now. Even if it means sacrificing my own."

"I'm not really offended easily," said Chance, a little dryly. Maebe's answers made him smile, and he put both arms on the back of his chair, resting his chin on top of them as he watched her. Hearing that she'd kill Finn made the corners of his lips twitch, as if he was hiding a laugh, but then it ebbed away at her next question, Chance's expression shifting a little.

He was silent for a moment, and then reached out, sliding his fingers gently across Maebe's until they had grasped hers entirely, the thoughts inside of his head brushing this way and that.

"It doesn't bother me," said Chance quietly. "I realize that he and I don't exactly have...well, the most conventional of relationships, if you can even call it that. But I'm not the jealous type, I never have been. And I've seen firsthand how much he cares about you."

His expression softened a little, though she couldn't see it, and Chance gave Maebe's hand a squeeze.

"I like him," he said. "I like him a lot, more than I'm used to, because this is all new for me too, as much as it is for him. I mean, in different ways, obviously, but to the same end. I like his passion and his heart and his stubbornness and his sass and his sarcasm, even when he's being a little s**t, which, admittedly, is a lot of the time."

Chance ducked his head and brought Maebe's fingers to his lips, brushing a brief kiss across her knuckles.

"But some of that passion and heart are directed at you; you're a big part of his life, and I like that. I told Otto when we started..." He waved his free hand. "Whatever this is, that I was taking him as is, work-in-progress and all. I don't want to take him away from you, and I don't want you to be taken away from him."

Maebe fell silent as Chance talked, and truly listened. His voice was lulling, but his words were so pretty, they counterbalanced her urge to zone out. So she stayed focused, and she was glad she did.

Chance named all of Otto's best traits, and Maebe couldn't help but smile. It was nice to know someone else in the world who had a true, and fond appreciation for that boy's particular qualities. He wasn't the most lovable man in the universe, but he was to them, and that was what mattered.

(She felt the tiniest stab of jealousy, when Chance told her she liked his sarcasm. But I'm better at it, she wanted to tell him. She held back, because she wasn't trying to win Chance over. But damnit, she was.)

Then her heart throbbed, because Chance told her exactly what she'd hoped to hear. She didn't necessarily think Otto needed her in his life - especially not now that he had someone like Chance - but she needed him, especially now. And she wasn't hurting him by taking up that small slice of his heart with her own selfish little needs.

She realized she was crying, and rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Well, you didn't have to get all gay about it." She whined out, taking her glasses off to wipe the tears from her eyes. "But I'm glad. I think we're all trying to be better people, right now - and you make Otto better." She wished she could say the same about herself, but she didn't think she made anyone better, anymore. If she had, maybe -

Maybe she would have been someone worth wanting.

Her face crumpled when she thought of it, still too fresh for it not to hurt. She pulled her hand away and tightened herself up into a ball on the bed, trying to will herself not to think about Dawson. This wasn't the time. This wasn't the place. She needed to be strong about this. And she could, damn it.

"Okay." She tried to chuckle out. "Your turn."

Maebe's face was wet. Chance had let go of her hand so that she could wipe at her glasses, and his expression had softened while watching her.

"I'm not gay," he said with a laugh. "Well. I'm not really anything except not straight. But...thank you," he added, his voice quieting down to something less lighthearted, more gentle. "I think, really, it works both ways. He makes me feel good about myself, and I've been hoping that's what I'm doing for him."

He caught the way Maebe's face twisted, the way she curled in on herself, and Chance shifted, standing up and turning the chair the right way around so that he could sit closer to the bed without the back of the chair in the way. He reached out, his fingers light as he gently brushed a thumb over her damp cheek.

"All right," he said softly. "What's the one thing you could say to anyone on the island if you could say it without fear or repecussions?"

It hurts to still need you so much.

Maebe had been so truthful with Chance for their entire game, but this was one she wasn't prepared to be truthful about. She flickered her gaze, hazy but still somewhat able to see him, and then looked back down. "I would tell the division leaders that they suck at their job. That counts, right?"

It wasn't necessarily a lie, it was just not something she cared that much about. It was all she could think of to say in place of the truth.

He gave a small laugh and gently brushed his fingers over Maebe's hair before his hand fell away. Chance leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees, his hands clasped together in front of him. "I suppose so," he said lightly, eyes flickering down towards her.

"I'm still not entirely certain what the division leaders do, per say, other than a lot of yelling, but I guess only time will tell."

A hum, and then -

"Your turn."

Her eyes fluttered closed when he brushed his hand against her hair, and opened again, somehow just a touch sadder. "They watch us kill one another and get killed. It's a tough job. I don't know how they manage."

It was her turn to ask a question all over again. What did she want to know about him?

"Do you have any secret hobbies? Or fetishes?" They were two different questions, and she obnoxiously asked them both, having suddenly realized just how well she could get to know someone if she just asked them the right questions in a game like this.

"And. AND. If you do, tell me them." She could already sense sarcasm rising and blocked it before it could rear it's head.

"Maybe they're used to it by now," said Chance mildly. "But that doesn't make it any better. In fact, if anything, I would think that would be a sadder fact, is if they're used to all of the killing. Nobody should get used to something like that."

He slid a thumb over the ring on his finger and a smiled tugged at the corners of his lips as he considered her next question.

"No secret hobbies, unless you count drawing people, which isn't much of a secret," said Chance with a little laugh. "I'm kind of an open book when it comes to things that I like or dislike. As for the other half of your question..." He gave Maebe a pointed look that clearly indicated he knew she had technically asked two, but wasn't going to comment on it. "I like marking, I suppose could be one. Leaving behind reminders that I was there on someone's skin."

Maybe it had to do with the fact that he disliked having the burn marks on his ribs and was attempting to compensate it by leaving marks of pleasure on others. Chance hummed thoughtfully.

"I also kinda dig cute underwear sometimes, but that's again I don't think really counting as a fetish."

There was a flicker of something uncomfortable in her expression, and she had to remind herself that Chance had no interest in her, and wouldn't be attempting to mark her anywhere. "I'm strongly against marking. If I had a mark for everyone who's done something to me.." She'd be nothing but scars and bruises, on every inch of her. She wouldn't have survived it.

"I like being flawless. I carry nothing and no one with me. Probably because I have too much to carry, on my own." It was a wonder she wasn't at least a little scarred from the injuries she'd taken during the zombie attack, but if he'd known Thaw, he would have understand.

Her eyes lit up at the mention of cute underwear. "Boy, have you come to the right place! Not only am I probably wearing super cute underwear - because let's face it, I don't own a pair that isn't cute - but you've got to come and see my collection." She bounced off of the bed, crawled away, and then walked as carefully as she could to her dresser. She stubbed her toe briefly on the chair he was sitting in, but was otherwise unharmed.

Sliding open the dresser, she looked down at all the perfectly folded little underwear, filled with flowers and hearts and pink and blue and pastels and tiny bears and alpacas and -

"Kids section." She explained. "And young teens. It's a good thing I have the a** of a 14 year old girl."

"Not permanently marking," Chance corrected her gently. "I've had enough of those to last a lifetime already. A lot of what I do is just to remind myself of the temporary, since I can't get rid of what's already on me. But I'm also very aware of what people are and aren't comfortable with, so that usually takes precedence in terms of something like that."

He was nothing if not careful with that, at the very least. Chance smiled as Maebe's face lit up, and he climbed out of the chair and followed her over to the dresser, peering down curiously.

"Oh come on," said Chance with a laugh. "You have a great a**, and this is a great collection. I particularly like the ones with the bears on it, those are really cute. And the ones with the little...what are those, sheep? They're silly looking sheep."

He gave a hum of appreciation. "The ones I'm wearing now probably couldn't be deemed as cute, but they're at least nicer than a lot of the ones in the guys' section."
