Zeffer giggled after a moment as he locked eyes with her, absolutely tense in her grasp as he waited to see if she'd go for it. He'd expected her to snap at him maybe, call him a name, and eventually approve of the suggestion, but it seemed his luck (and her patience) had finally run out. As she continued the count down, Zeffer's grin melted away into something distressed and fretful, and he clenched her hand tightly as he felt the heat of the blade, breaking eye contact to look away. It wouldn't hurt so much if he couldn't see...

Unfortunately, it didn't mean he wouldn't feel it at all. A good couple seconds passed before the pain actually registered. The noise that escaped his throat was nothing short of blood-curdling. With the metal burning into his marked flesh, he vocalized accordingly, the screams echoing through the cave system and down the mountain. Even though the spot had been numbed dead from the snow, it hardly seemed to make any difference.

Somehow, he'd managed to keep from thrashing. With his hand clamped around Akko's, he'd simply tensed up instead, almost curling into her as she took care of the problem, letting out a ragged, whimpered breath when she finally lifted the blade away. At least ten minutes had passed before he was able to compose himself, gritting his teeth as he sucked in ragged breaths, pained tears streaming down his face as he fought to calm down.

"You're right. W-wasn't too bad." He stammered, hiccuping a bitter laugh as he quivered in his seat. The smell had just hit him, and the pain had his head swimming - he hoped she had medication for burn wounds somewhere in her hive.

Zeffer's crumbling facade was not lost on her, and for the briefest of moments, Akko felt another surge of guilt. Wasn't it sort of her fault he was in this situation to begin with? The shame rapidly subsided, a quietly simmering rage crawling in its place as she stared down at the jagged tattoo. It really didn't change anything even if she was to blame- he had been marked by the Imperial military and it needed to be removed. They both needed to be strong (but much moreso him). That's what Byakko repeated to herself for the zillionth time, anyway, as she huddled over her blackcrush, mutilating his arm. A grimace momentarily flickering across her face as she studied Zeffer's hissing exoskeleton.

After a few long, silent seconds, Byakko looked back up at him, perplexed by Zeffer's reaction. Or rather, lack there of.

Then came the screaming.

Thankfully, these parts of the mountain were desolate. Even if there had been someone to hear Zeff's cries, they could have easily been passed off as some sort of poor feral beast being brutally slaughtered. Akko winced as he screeched in her face.

"Shhhh." His hand was practically crushing hers, or she would have offered him another squeeze of support. Instead, Akko tried to choke out a soothing coo, although given their relationship it seemed... almost sarcastic. "Just a little bit longer."

Akko pressed the blade down on his wrist steadily, making sure to evenly cover his markings. Her own hand trembled. The longer she watched, the more she wanted to vomit, but she couldn't tear her lookstubs away at the risk of ******** up his wrist. She hadn't been too sure how long to keep the glowing knife pressed against Zeffer- how long did it take to melt a troll's exoskeleton sufficiently enough to hide something like a tattoo, anyway?

She waited longer than she probably should have before pulling away, just to be safe.

Discarding the knife onto the cavern floor as if it had burned her, Byakko returned her attention back to Zeffer. "You did good." Her tone was almost apologetic, but her expression resorted back to default. Admittedly, she was quite a few shades paler.

Reaching out with her now free hand, she cupped Zeffer's cheek clammily. She flushed a bright mutant pink. Ultimately he had taken it like a champ, once he buckled down. Softly sliding her hand up his scarred face, Akko wiped at his sweaty forehead before leaning in to plant a firm, yet tender kiss above his brow. She lingered before pulling away, glancing down sheepishly at his bubbling scar instead of meeting his gaze.

After all that, he deserved a little reward.

Zeffer was glad that Akko's hive was so secluded, because there was no way he'd have ever been able to hold back the noise. In hindsight, it would have been better if he'd had something to bite down on, but turning his head to scream himself hoarse had worked well enough. He appreciated her attempts to placate him during the process, even if he hadn't been able to acknowledge her much, as he vented his hurt into the frigid air. The application of the knife had been absolutely horrible, and an eternity seemed to pass before she finally lifted it away; he trusted her judgement as far as timing went, and would rather have it all done at once, rather than being forced to repeat it because of a botched attempt.

He felt sick and light-headed once it was over, which was embarrassing, but also eerily familiar. The intense pain was all too reminiscent of the wounds he had suffered from the lightning strike, and he swayed dizzily, still refusing to look down at the burn. He heard the clatter of the knife on the rocky floor of the cave, and then Akko's voice again, gentler than it had been before. That provided some relief, at least - he'd done what needed to be done, and even though he'd been a weenie about it, the mark was gone, and he wouldn't have to worry about getting caught anymore.

As Zeffer shifted to look at her, his agonized grimace was briefly replaced by surprise, as she reached up to touch his face. Her brilliant pink flush was almost enough to make him laugh, but as she leaned up to kiss him, he quickly felt his face heating up as well. It was a nice distraction, and he nuzzled down against her head after she pulled away, trying to focus on anything but his wrist.

"Thanks, Akko." He murmured against her hair. The warmth of her kiss couldn't replace the searing itch in his arm forever, unfortunately. He winced as he flexed his hand, and heaved a shaky sigh. "Sorry for not doing it sooner. Nngh. You do have a first aid kit somewhere, right?" He sniffled and glanced away again, sounding sheepish. Burns as bad as that could become easily infected, after all, and he wasn't interested in losing his arm.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 21, 2015 9:53 pm

Byakko's vision remained focused down on the raw burn, fidgeting and flushing an even more vibrant shade of pink when Zeffer shifted to nuzzle against her. The mutant's bloodpusher skipped a lone beat. She didn't even register his own blush, as she completely refused eye contact, preferring to stare down at the nauseating wound than acknowledge either token of affection any further.

"Good, you should be sorry. But yeah, I have some medical supplies back at the hive." She sounded drained. Prying her interlocked fingers from his own, Byakko took a second to stretch her aching digits, individually cracking each one. Undeniably she had dealt way more damage to him, but regardless her hand felt like someone had run it over with a ******** steamroller. Flexing stiffly, Akko braved a quick peek back up to Zeffer.

"Well, no point in wasting any more time." Pushing herself up off the ground, Akko hoovered beside Zeffer for a moment before retrieving the cooling dagger. "Let's head back." Turning on one heel, she glanced over shoulder to confirm that he was following her before melting back into the depths of the cave system.

"Wonderful." Zeffer murmured, and disengaged from Byakko as she tugged her hand away, his eyes shading glassily. He was guilty when he realized how hard he'd squeezed, but the pain was too distracting for him to give it much thought, and it seemed a stupid thing to apologize for. He flexed his hand again and hissed softly, eyes still fixed ahead. He wasn't really sure if he wanted to see it until the smell of burnt flesh had faded away.

As Akko stood, he followed shortly after, swaying on his feet and sucking in another breath, reminding himself that it wasn't that bad. He'd been through worse. He repeated it in his head, and shuffled after her, breath puffing in the air as he panted softly. For a moment he thought about grabbing a handful of snow, but decided instead that getting disinfectant and a bandage would be more important than managing the pain. His eyes drifted down to watch Akko, and for the millionth time in his life, he distracted himself by staring at the back of her legs.

Throwing a glance back every now and then to assure that Zeff was still trailing her and hadn't silently toppled over, Akko led them back to her barren hive. Sealing the hefty door shut behind him with a slight grunt, she pointed to the couch he had lugged up the mountain and ever so graciously bestowed upon her. "Sit," she commanded sharply, not completely unlike how one might address a trained pet.

Discarding the dagger onto the table with a clatter, Byakko slunk to immediately retrieve a medical kit stored on one of the shelves lining the uneven cave walls. The supplies she had managed to wrangle together probably weren't as new or high end as the ones Zeff brought that lay unpacked- but they'd be perfectly acceptable.

Returning to the centre of her hive, purposefully walking a large circle around the nesting Arcus, she tossed the small gray chest onto the table. There was no more conversation. Pausing to give his wrist a long stare, Akko reached down to flip open the lid, fiddling with the contents.

Zeffer didn't need much prodding to follow her directions, and trudged over to sink onto the couch. He'd managed to make it back in without much incident, despite the light headedness that persisted, and the nausea that threatened to take over. The pain was still intense, but he forced himself to look up, and tried to even out his breathing as he stared up at the ceiling.

"I hope you've got some anaesthetic in that thing." Zeffer huffed and smirked, settling his wrist on his lap, burn facing upward. After trying to flex his hand again, he gave up on moving and waited for her to come over, eyes sliding over to watch as she fiddled around with the supplies. They usually contained some kind of painkiller, which he usually didn't bother with for stab wounds, but the pain he was currently experiencing was a different beast altogether.

As Akko moved about, Arcus shifted, his forked tongue flicking out several times to test the air. His coils rose and fell as he sighed, and a quiet hiss escaped him. Zeffer laughed weakly as his lusus voice his concern. "It's alright. I forgot to do something, is all." He explained absently, before his caretaker went silent again.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 13, 2015 10:56 pm

Arcus never once left Akko's peripherals. It was a force of habit, really- she didn't expect him to really move, let alone strike, but the mutantblood was still never quite able to shake the uneasy feeling she had around the massive lusus. She noticiably flinched when the giant snake shifted, biting on the insides of her cheeks at Zeffer's vague explaination. Forgot. Mhmm.

Upon Zeffer's thinly veiled request, Akko retrieved a lone syringe and added it to the other items in her palm. "Mmm, there's some in here." Sliding a roll of guaze across the makeshift table towards him, she gave the glass container a few light flicks, inspecting the clear liquid closely against the dancing candle light. Shadow played across her scarred face as she held it in front of her nose, spinning it in her fingertips before narrowing her eyes past the capped tip and back to Zeff. Akko rose an eyebrow judgementally, but merely blinked, popping the cap off the needle with her thumb. Edging around the table to settle down on the couch beside him, she discarded the rest of the supplies beside them before turning back to inspect his bubbling wound once again.

Without bothering to issue so much as a warning, Akko slid her free hand into the crook of his elbow, pressing down as she jammed the needle sideways into the centre of the burn. Her eyes flickered up to meet his. She understood he was suffering, but- anaesthetic? For a wound this, ultimately, insignificant? How... pitiable. The corners of Akko's lips twitched. Once all the liquid from the syringe had been steadily expelled under Zeffer's charred flesh, she withdrew the needle, tossing it carelessly onto the wooden table before busying herself with applying a thin layer of salve to his arm. Scooping another generous helping of translucent cyan goop from a glass jar with what seemed to be a home made label, Akko shrugged and decided to break the silence. "Trolldad taught me how to make this stuff from plants on the mountain," She slathered the ointment over his arm gingerly, taking care not to miss any areas. "It works better than any crap you can buy at some highblood store, I think." Another shrug. She wouldn't really know. "But Qinlon preferred it." The name still felt sour on her tongue- it was odd to let herself mutter it aloud. It was odder to think that he was still alive and innocent of crimes she had blamed him for sweeps, and even odder still that Zeffer had actually met the older blueblood. "Either way, it works." Wiping her fingers off on his pantleg, Akko turned to reach for the guaze, unravelling and twisting it between her fingers. "Good enough for you?" Her expression signalled that there was really no question posed, despite her inflection.

"What? Might was well use it if you have it, right?" Zeffer could only offer the usual s**t-eating grin, which was still noticeably colored by pain. Even under Akko's judgemental glaring, he harbored no shame, his smirk sharpening as the needle flashed in the light. It wasn't as if they were in the midst of battle, hopped up on adrenaline with no time to properly care for their injuries. The pain was a distraction he didn't want to be forced to deal with, and he hissed softly as Akko administered the medicine, hardly flinching as she stuck him with quick efficiency. After a few moments, his expression softened with relief, and he sighed and flexed his hand, all too pleased to feel his skin beginning to go numb.

As Akko began to slather on another type of medicine, he finally gave in to the urge to look, and wrinkled his nose at the sight. It wasn't the kind of thing that made him queasy, but it certainly wasn't nice to look at, and he quickly found himself wondering if burning had really been the right thing to do. He didn't dare open his mouth about it of course, and instead looked up to listen to Akko explain, eyes shining with amusement. He was about to ask more about the salve, but at her mention of exiled rebel's name, his thought process shifted altogether.

"It's perfect. Thanks Akko..." Gradually, the blueblood's grin faded into something more thoughtful, an expression tinged with concern. Though he was not usually the type to worry over the past, the events of their most recent escapades had been tumbling around his thinkpan ever since they had happened. He had not wavered in his conviction, especially in the face of the other rebels, many of whom had dissented against his actions...but with Akko, he felt safe discussing his anxiety.

"Speaking of that...I've been thinking about what happened, lately." Zeffer's mouth pressed into a firm line as he remembered the way the others had screamed at him. "Do you think I was...too hasty? About Errade?" He glanced down, and picked up the gauze Akko had rolled to him earlier, undoing the hook and beginning to wrap his wrist, happy enough to use it as an excuse to fidget.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 13, 2015 11:10 pm

"Nn..." Akko's face fell and soured at the mention of Errade, hunching over to fidget with her braid absent mindedly. Sinking back against the couch, she let out a heavy sigh, shaking her head after her thoughts had marinated long enough in the heavy silence.

"You did what you were supposed to. If anything, I was. I told you to do it," well, not verbally- but there had been no miscommunication regardless. Byakko had wanted Errade dead.

"She needed to die."

Didn't she? In the moment, Byakko was resolute. Revenge for her father was all she had ever dreamed of; coupled with Errade's guilt and continuous interference, there hadn't been a flicker of doubt in her thinkpan. Errade's impending death from her injuries was just a bonus, nothing more than a card she was lucky enough to be able to play to quell Vremea and Odette's enmity towards the execution.

Byakko wanted to think she always did everything in the best interest of the Initiative; but did this really fall in line with said oath? They probably could have squeezed more information out of Errade, or as the girls had vehemently pointed out, at least talked about it. The looming fear that she had placed her desires over something crucial to the Initiative haunted her.

She didn't question her decision to end Errade; no, it was more than deserved. Akko did, however, question her own motivations.

In all honesty, the rebel's discord had struck Akko deeper than she had cared to admit. But then again, why did she feel the need to keep up that facade with Zeffer? He was obviously confiding in her; and once again, he was the only one in any position to even try to begin to understand her. A mentor, that's what the older rebels had been commanded to refer to Zhuque as around the newer recruits, before they had all been killed. If they were pried for more details- which they weren't, to the best of her knowledge- Akko's 'lusus had passed away when she was young'. But she had already confided the truth about her guardian to Zeff, after he had learned about her mutation. At the time Byakko had opted out of sharing that Zhuque had been head of the rebellion- but unless Zeffer was even more of an idiot than she thought, he had pieced together that they were one and the same.

Drawing a shaky breath, Akko changed course. "I don't know if we were hasty. Everything happened so fast..."

Her voice dropped, and she ripped her eyes from watching Zeff wrap his wounds, focusing on the stalactites above them. "I spent so much time thinking about how I'd kill Qinlon if the opportunity ever presented itself, back when I was convinced he had a hand in everything. I mean- it was just a fantasy, y'know- we all pretty much thought he was dead, even with all the rumours. But that didn't make it feel any less real." Twisting at her braid, she shrugged.

"I just... snapped, I think." Acting hastily wasn't her nature. "Carried all that over to Errade, or something." Byakko deflated further into the cushions.

"It doesn't matter either way. It's over."

Zeffer gradually slouched into the cushions himself, tying off the gauze once he was satisfied. With nothing else to occupy his hands with, he splayed out and breathed a quiet sigh as Akko broke her thoughtful silence. Her explanation did provide some reassurance; it was a relief to know that they were, without a doubt, united in their feelings. He was sure she would have said so much sooner, if it hadn't been the case, but discussing it aloud cemented it in his mind. Though he harbored no regret about what he had done, there was still the problem of the other rebels. The way they had reacted, and how he had reacted in turn. It was about more than just the hasty execution.

"Yeah." His voice was low and pensive as he conceded to her closing statement. In a way, it was very true...but in others, it was not. Akko had attempted to take the blame for the decision, but Zeffer didn't believe for a moment that it would be enough to sway the girls' likely disgusted opinions of him. He would always be the one who had swung the axe, in their eyes. If there was anything he did regret, it was his flippant aggression he'd displayed, regarding their almost-desertion, during the meeting at the rebel brooding cavern. For once in his life, he wished he'd kept his ******** mouth shut.

"I don't want to end up like him, Akko. Like Qinlon." Zeffer looked away, all the traces of his usual irreverence gone from his expression and tone. "I shouldn't have talked down to Vremea and Odette that day." Even if their views were naive at best, it was not a good base to rebuild the Initiative on. True, Akko had claimed that they didn't have to like or even trust one another...but after weeks of reflection, he suddenly felt like the weak link. He glanced over at her tiredly, not quite knowing what to expect.

"I mean, I know it's on me to fix what I ******** up, ********. If he can get set up, what's to stop that s**t from happening again??" The way their current situation vaguely reflected the old PI was almost eerie to him.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 13, 2015 11:27 pm

Akko's fingers slipped to disentangle themselves from her braid, visibly perplexed when Zeff voiced his fears of mirroring Qinlon. She looked wearily back to him, studying his scarred face with her usual scrutinization as his tone faded into something much more sincere- something she had only ever seen once before from him.

"You're right, you shouldn't have opened your mouth." She wished he had kept it shut, too; back at the brooding cavern Zeffer had effortlessly swatted down her efforts to reconcile with the girls in one fell swoop. Akko had managed to scramble and pick up the pieces, again, but truthfully... the Initiative would never be a well oiled machine again without the base element of trust. Byakko couldn't possibly be the only thing keeping everyone from ripping each other throats out forever. She shifted to face Zeff, leaning in as she spoke. "But what's done is done- if you want to fix it, then work towards just that. That's something Qinlon could never do," the other blueblood had been infamous around the rebellion for his sour attitude and sharp tongue. While Zhuque was more charismatic than Akko could ever hope to be by leagues, he had also been the one scurrying around sweeping up Qinlon's aggressions. "You need to show them that there's no grudge held and that you can keep working together. Hopefully, they'll reciprocate. It's a start, anyway..."

Akko wanted to promise how she wouldn't let the Initiative's history repeat itself, that she'd protect him from that fate, but they both knew it would be a relatively empty one. There was no way she could possibly garuntee that.

"I don't know," she tacked on a confession, fidgeting with the edges of the cushions. Akko's usual surefire resolve had dissipated into an questioning unease she rarely allowed anyone to bare witness to, just as he had. "We just need to be more careful. At least there's a lot less of us to keep an eye on." Hers remained intently locked onto his face. Swallowing a lump of grief that rose in her throat, prompted by her own comment, she hesitantly nudged the side of Zeff's hand with her own. Akko laced a few of her fingertips with his, voice barely more than a whisper. "But... I trust you." Now that all the older rebels were dead, he was the only one she honestly, truly did.

Zeffer wove his fingertips with hers in return, and squeezed gently, glancing down as he felt the heat rise to his face. Even though it was impossible to completely dispel his fears, Byakko's words helped to provide some comfort. If one thing was for certain, he was almost nothing like Qinlon in personality, or so he liked to think. He had spoken that night out of anger, allowed his own venom to poison his thinkpan. Their supposed pacifism was still irksome to him, but it had been wrong to lash out over their near-desertion. Who wouldn't have left, if they felt their voices and opinions were going ignored?

"I trust you too," he murmured, and looked back up as she gazed over. A vague blue colored his cheeks, but his expression was still somber and contemplative. Her support meant the world, and served not just as a comfort, but as a motivator. "I wanna try. I'm gonna be better than I was that night. Better than I've been." His voice was low, and the blush deepened as he broke their eye contact again. It was uncharacteristic to dwell on such a grave subject, and He didn't know how, or when, but he was determined to do it, for her and what the rebellion stood for, if nothing else. Vremea and the scouts had saved his life and countless others, after all, from a horrid end. They deserved better than the aggressive talking down he had given them that night.

"We're going back to the caves soon, right? Do you think you'll call another meeting?" He tilted his head, expression gradually easing into something less serious and more tired. Now that he had the idea in mind, the only thing left to do was to act on it.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 13, 2015 11:37 pm

When Zeffer locked his hand with hers, Byakko stiffened momentarily, somehow still inwardly surprised that he reciprocated the gesture. Her fingers twitched. She had simply been holding his wrist down earlier so he didn't squirm too much- to her, this was another ballpark altogether. He often yanked her around by the wrist, but they had never actually held hands, had they? Her face practically burst into a ball of hot pink.

"Mmm. Well, I believe in you." Akko returned his squeeze, ducking her head as she felt the now familiar heated throbbing rise to her cheeks. Hiding abashedly under a veil of her hair, she settled her vision on their hands. Zeffer's unrelenting support was comforting, more than comforting, even- but all Akko had really wanted was his word to work alongside the others. It was a relief to know he had taken the matter truly to heart and given it some genuine thought, and even moreso that he had reached a similar conclusion as she had. It was hard for her to decipher what actually got through Zeffer's thick skull when all he did was grin and laugh, but the pensive look painted across his face communicated as much depth as his words.

Byakko perked from her introspection when Zeffer changed the subject, responding with an empty nod. "Probably," it was a singular response to both questions. "There's still a lot of cleaning up there to do." Akko started to slowly work her fingers free of his while she spoke, growing increasingly aware of how uncomfortable their little moment was making her. "Why?"

"Thanks Akko. I think so, too." Zeffer found it hard to bite back a smirk, As Akko stiffened and began to blush. After spilling his guts about his worries, he felt better, lighter, and more willing to allow his usual mood to take over again. Akko had his back the same way he had hers, and he already had it in his mind to do better in the future. He hoped the girls would be receptive to his change of attitude, but it would likely take time to build up trust. Patience certainly wasn't one of his virtues, but for Akko and the rebellion, he was willing to give it his best shot.

"Just curious." His grin sharpened, and he leaned in to inspect her face, looming over her as she perked and looked back to him. "I still think we should consider moving headquarters, but if you really don't think it's a risk..." While she worked to pull her hand away, he attempted to keep it in his grasp, eyes taking on a glimmer of mischief. The way she reacted to contact was all too amusing to him, and while he wanted to make a comment about her very obvious blush, a much funnier idea popped into his head.

"Also Akko, it's getting early, I dunno if I can make it back to town before it gets light. Mind if I crash here today? We might have to share a recuperacoon, though, unless you have a spare around...." He sighed, and leaned back, looking thoughtful, but eager to see how she would react.
