"Who said I was going to help her? I could drop then off into the ocean." His lips thinned. "Why - do you want to keep them?"

"She left them here. This is my room. I do not appreciate you exerting yourself over me. This dominance posturing is tedious." And he stood up from his place on the bed.
"Do leave them and go already if she is so important to you."

"I rather thought you would be more understanding about how uncomfortable I am with you keeping America's shoes, Jan." His mouth twisted, both sad and angry. "This one small thing, let me do this."

"I did not say I would keep them but they are mine and I am firm on this. There is a line darling." and he stepped closer to the other man, intent. "I do not permit people to break my things, I do not permit people to take my things, you did not ask, you seized and therefore you revoked your right to ask at all. It is manners. This is rude."
He flexed his hand again. "No, Horace."

"They are not yours, they are America's. It is not a gift, but an oversight." He watched Jan warily, seeing in him the same concerning predator he'd seen before.
"There is a line, Jan," he said, echoing him. "In no world am I supposed to be okay with a previous lover leaving things here and there and especially not okay that you seem so intent upon keeping them, if only for a little while. They are not yours." He clutched the shoes a little tighter. Now, they were more than just shoes and it was not something he was willing to budge on - not with Jan's history. Unless, of course, he could get rid of them later.

Lawr narrowed his eyes. "If you will not put them down then get out. You evidently cannot trust me, you wound me with this. Your little spiteful feud with America is more important to you than our relationship, than us. Enjoy your shoes, I sincerely hope they were worth betraying me."
"This was not about America, this was about respecting me, you could not do it. You could not surrender one simple thing, I surrendered the lamp, I bowed to your desires, you remained selfish. Thank you Horace."

He crossed his arms even more tightly across his body. "I have not said a ******** word about your lamp since t-that time. I wasn't gonna to try to push you to get rid of it! This isn't about America - it's about you, Jan." His eyes darted to the side, clearly assessing if he should just run. Horace looked like he was about to cry.
"Why do you even ******** want the goddamn shoes? This is me betraying you? Is that it? You're ******** important to me so that's why I didn't want you to languish over a pair of s**t shoes from a girl you used to obsess over!" Used to. Yeah ******** right, he told himself, an unhappy frown crossing his face.
He seemed to deflate a bit. "Fine, just... f-fine. You don't understand, too caught up to even think about how I feel. You ******** win." Quickly, Horace shoved past Jan back into the room. And, abruptly, he flung both shoes out the window. He put them down, Jan.

Lawrence watched the shoes fly out the window and his expression went utterly blank.
"That was childish." he said. "I am disappointed."
He turned his back on the other man and made his way to the window to look out. He said nothing else.

Disappointed? Jan was disappointed. "Yeah, well, me too, Jan. And if you don't know why, there's something wrong." Horace walked back to the door, stuffed his feet into his own shoes and left.
