Torchwood sat in awe as the flashlight was passed around. Some stories were incredibly believable and others were hilarious, mostly because the antics of the babs that told them.

His heart nearly leapt out of his throat when he saw the filly’s transparent legs. A wicked old mare witch living in the woods and sucking the souls out of young phonies; this seemed entirely possibly and with proof even! But Torchwood was little skeptical… how did she get away. The sandy colored colt made a mental note he should ask more about this later.

A similarly colored bab tried to tell another store, but was not-so-quickly interrupted by the brown filly that sat near him. It was a little rude, but Torchwood couldn’t help but laugh at the end at Labyrinth did the voices and jumped to terrify the others. “At least I don’t need to worry about that one, no corpse bride is going to come after me for being more beautiful…. But maybe some of you ladies better keep an eye out her grave.”

Torchwood caught his sister shivering and nudged her a little. He whispered in her ear, “I’m sure it’s just a story… but let’s avoid graveyards for now.”

He watched as others grew terrified and laughed. His brother Nimbus taking care of comforting the blue phony made him smile a little. It was nice to see so many getting along.

A grey pegasus told a cautionary tale, and Torchwood made a mental note never to poison his future wife. He definitely believed in ghosts, it a jilted ex-lover was not something he wanted to be haunted by for the rest of his life. Of all the stories, Torchwood felt this was the safest. It was entirely possible, but not very threatening. He chuckled half-heartedly… “No one’s stolen anything golden, right?” His eyes darted to the brown filly he sat with… Torchwood was a little weary that maybe this one might just do that.

Then another tale, that warned Torchwood that adults should really be more careful about the phonies they date! ‘No kissing till you’ve been out in the daylight a few times at least’, he thought to himself.

Then he saw Kaiju, and his breath stopped. This once fought real monsters, self-admitting monster fighter! This was going to be good! Torchwood inched closer to hear this tale. He’d taken down a giant with multiple mouths and creepy green hair… but their were more! Torchwood’s eyes darted to the forest… if it’s eyes glowed at least there would be some warning if it came near.

The last story came from the filly with the crazy eyes, the one that helped put the idea into his brain to start the stories anyways. It started off chilling… and Torchwood’s imagination ran wild… a man with moth wings! How creepy!... but then it devolved to a conspiracy theory, and Torchwood was oddly less scared and more intrigued. What crazy kind of group was out there trying to control the world? He used his magic to inch one of the filly’s flyers towards him. When he was close enough he snuck it into his bag to take a look at later. Best to be in the know, he thought.

What's that sound!?!?!
Decidedly hungry after all those stories, Torchwood decided he needed another snack. He was out of marshmallows, but the bab got up and made his way to the snack table. An unopened bag of chips called his name. With his unicorn magic, he tried to open the bag.

There a loud crackling sound. Torchwood paused and looked at the chip bag. That was just the chips right? Nothing to fear from an open bag of chips… but then there was another crack, like the sound of a tree branch breaking.

Leaves rustled. Was it just the wind? It had to be.

But then there was another crackly sound, followed by sounded like a groan.

… Was the sound coming from behind the snack table? Turning Torchwood looked at the spot behind the snack table. The forest area seemed dense, but the bush seemed to move. Light briefly caught a reflection. Where those EYES he saw peering out from the bush?

Torchwood scream and yelled, “Monster!” He threw the bag of chips at the bush, “Ghost! Monster! AHHHH!”

What could it possibly be!:
A Wendigo comes to eat them all
A wicked mare to steal their souls
A corpse bride risen from the grave
A ghost looking for the stolen golden hoof
A ghost looking for a lover to take to the afterlife with her
A scary hairy green river monster
A mothman
... The possibilities were endless

Gjen squealed at the sound of shouting. She knew there wasn't really a monster in the bushes, but how fun was this bonfire? First the scary stories, and now this. "Monster? Eeeeeek!" she squeaked out, trying her hardest not to giggle. Surely everybody else realized it was just some animal- probably a raccoon or something- right?

Dramatis Personae was... well, she wasn't bored. But she wasn't scared, either. These were just stories, they weren't really real... They couldn't be real. They had ghosts and monsters and those just didn't exist the way horror stories said they did. Ghosts were just transparent phonies like her grandmother, made in a factory or born to parents who were related to ghosts. She was pretty good at telling the difference between dramatic exaggerations of the truth and the actual truth, and none of the stories could possibly have been true.

But if that was the case, why was she shaking? She grabbed Penny's hoof. "M...monster?" she whispered. "There's... there's no real monsters, are there?"

Kaiju rolled his eyes at the know-it-all little colt who'd asked about squirrels. Rude, much? Way to kill the mood. He was about ready to chew the unpleasant fellow out when somebody else cried "Monster!" His ears jerked up- that was his call to action. He lept to his feet and flared his wings, jumping in front of Nimbus and Aquarius. Pawing the ground, he snorted. "I'll protect you!" he shouted. "I'm not afraid of any monsters!" He snorted again, furrowed his brow, and took a step towards the bushes, flicking his tail. The chips would maybe work as bait, but they were a pretty lousy projectile. If it was small enough to hide in the bushes, it was probably small enough to tackle.

Penny stayed where she sat, still in her snit. Pah, her stories would have been wasted on these foals who quake in their horseshoes at a snapping twig. She would have made them dissolve into tears and shaking at the very notion there was a toaster in their houses. She blinked at Drama as she grabbed her hoof and huddled near in fright.

"Of course there are cousin. There are many monsters in the world, but not all of them take the forms we would know to be frightened of like teeth and claws. They all look like us, until the last moment, when their true nature is revealed, and then it is far, far too late."

That was prolly the least comforting thing she could have told Drama, but it was true. There were worse things to be afraid of then something that went bump in the night, or in this case, bushes.

Labyrinth's fur stood on end at the screech of monster. She dove forward in front of Torchwood and Lightening, grinning, licking her fangs in excitement. Oh boy oh boy she hoped it really was a monster. A monster would have a lair, a lair would need to be found, and it would have awesome stuff inside it. Lab was ready! Bring on the monster!

Hex was one of the first to hear the noises. They sounded as if someone or something was creeping up on the campsite and before she knew it the little pink and red haired colt had yelled "monster!"

Sliding off her seat from the log she fell down on her back legs and began to yell for all to hear. "The hallucinogens are taking affect! The menin black...they're here to take us into their cult and experiment on us! I can only hope that we all make it out of this alive..." She grinned to herself. This is the moment she had lived for! She hoped she could be of use to the Illuminati!

Everything seemed to go in slow motion for Nimbus after his brother yelled out "monster." He watched as Kaiju jumped in front of them, to protect them from harm. At that moment he knew what he needed to do! Aquarius wouldn't last a second once the monster showed it's ugly face. He had to get him somewhere safe, somewhere the monster wouldn't look. He quickly spotted a berry bush off to the side of the campground. That was perfect! The sweet smell of the berries would detract the monster from their scent!

Tapping the light blue Phony on the shoulder, he quickly pointed to the bush. "Come on! We'll be safe in their until the monster leaves!" He hurried Aquarius along not waiting a second for the monster to strike. He did hope his other new friend, Kaiju would be okay! He was after all prepared to go back out there though if Kaiju couldn't hold his own.

Aquarius smiled, enjoying being around Nimbus (and having him be around him!). He bet that Nimbus really would protect him! He looked super strong and tough. Of course, just as he begun to relax as everyone finished telling stories, chaos broke out! Torchwood saw a monster? It seemed like everyone was yelling or something!

"Oh my stars!" He looked around, and could definitely hear the rustling of something in the woods. Aquarius clung to Nimbus, afraid of whatever spooky thing was about to pop out and kill them all! He hid under the bushes like the true coward he is, but turned to Nimbus. "W-wait, you aren't going to leave me alone right? I don't want the monster to get you or Kaiju either..." He felt his face get all warm, his heart racing. Oh god, they were all gonna get eaten by a monster or a ghost and Aquarius just wanted to see the stars from out in the woods!

Lavender loved all the stories! She wished Sugar had gotten to tell hers, because it was probably really scary! But the pink pegasus grabbed the flashlight from her before she even started, and before Lavender could politely interject. Maybe she'd tell the story to her later when they slept.

Some of the stories were super cool (wow, that Kaiju guy was pretty neat! Who knew there were monsters in the swamps around Phonyland?), and others were... well, weird. The mothman...? Also the swirly-eyed filly's story devolved into some wild conspiracy thing so it wasn't even like she thought the monster was real! But it was at least interesting...

"A monster? Like, a real one?" Lav said, sitting up stiffly. She wasn't expecting anything like this to happen! She grabbed her best friend's hoof, suddenly finding herself frightened with the idea that perhaps the stories were real! "Oh my god, Sug, what if its the ghosts! And we're like, camping on some weird phony graveyard?"

It wasn't Tough's fault that the animal was clearly a squirel. And it wasn't like he was trying to pick apart some of the stories so he wouldn't be so scared. No way! Tough wasn't afraid at all. Not even a little, itty-bitty bit.

As soon as the shout of monster came, the colt jumped three feet in the air and dove away from the fire near his sister again. Wide eyed in shock and terror, he shook, "W-what could it be? Should we leave?" No no no! This had to be a prank. Calm down. Swallowing, he carefully stood and paced closer to where Kaiju Blue stood.

"Have you ever SEEN that monster you were chasing?" Tough whispered to the other softly, "Could that be what's out there?" Talk of the illuminati set his heart on edge. Oh dear. He had read about them in Da's books.

Sugar Petal was intensely relieved when her friend held her hoof tightly, gripping it back as her entire body shuddered. Wait, what? Were they on a graveyard? The sudden thought that, maybe, her best friend was right was enough for her to tug on Lav's hoof, eyes wide and already brimming with tears. For once, the unexpressive phony was displaying plenty of emotion!

"What if it eats us?" She whimpered, turning around when her brother dove beside her. For a second she reached out to pull him closer, but he was back with Kaiju Blue before she could muster the ability to move. Oh man, where was big brother Orchid?

Blind Love, however, was having a blast of a time. A monster? For real? A real live monster? Sign her up!

"You know, he's probably just as afraid of us as we are of him!" She called out to the frightened foals, eying the bushes with a faint smile.

"I bet if we're real nice and quiet he'll just skitter off."

While her brother's reassurance made her feel more at ease, she still was a little scared as the night went on. So into the storytelling going on she only vaguely realized when her brother left, noticing the spot behind her empty when he had started yelling and she realized he was so far away.

It was something about the adrenaline she had running through her and the nervousness she felt that had put Lightning over the edge at the thought of a monster being around. She trembled, immediately the thoughts of a ghost or a phony that had come from the grave to come and get them all rising to her mind. But Labyrinth appeared in front of her and while she felt slightly reassured, she realized she wanted to help protect her brother. So she stepped up beside Labyrinth, hoping that her trembling wouldn't betray her as she said "W-whatever it is, let's face it!"

It was probably nothing, she knew deep in her mind, monsters were just a tale told to scare others. But at that moment it felt real and she wanted to face it head on, even if it was just to protect her family.

The bag of chips being flung, the noise of phonies shuffling and the combination of their whispers or surprised squeals startled the ‘monster’ in the bush. A pair of yellow eyes glimmered as they reflected light from the fire. A faint growling was omitted, easily interrupted as the kind of sound a monster would make.

Torchwood backed up a little, taking a precautionary measure to move away lest he be eaten.

A 'Monster' Appears and Disappears
The growl stopped and the woods were silent for a moment. The yellow eyes darted around, looking for a clear path towards it goal. It inched forward, and those with keen eyes could make out a flash of white teeth against a dark patch of fur. Then quick as lightening, the ‘monster’ leapt out of the bush and made a mad dash towards it’s goal.

A red fox, with inky black paws and a white tipped tail ran passed the babs near the picnic table. Fantastically, the fox scampered up the bench to the tabletop and like the greedy wild animal it was, scooped up an entire package of hotdogs into its mouth. For a brief moment, it turned and brazenly stared at the campers; the package of hotdogs gripped between its teeth [not unlike this]. Just as quickly as it appeared, the fox jumped off the table and dashed back to the woods with its prize.

Torchwood stood there stunned for moment. Then all of a sudden, he fell down to the ground shaking with unbridled laughter. It was a FOX. Of all things in the world to be afraid of, it was a fox that got him. He couldn’t believe it that he mistook a fox for a monster. He couldn’t help but roll a little as he laughed, haphazardly knocking into the babs nearest him. “Did you SEE it’s face!?”

An audible "awww" was heard from the group of babs, coming from the little cult loving Phony. She had so hoped this would be her big moment where the Illuminati welcomed her into their cult with open arms. "False alarm guys! We should all take a lesson from this though! The Illuminati could come at any moment...I mean they already control are government, what's next OUR MINDS!" She jumped up shaking her hooves wildly before adding, "I'll be ready...but will you?" And with that she began gathering up her stuff. There was still so much she could be doing. The night was still young after all.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A fox...? Nimbus could feel his cheeks flush. Out of all the things that had happened to him in his short life this was definitely the most embarrassing! He peeked his head out of the bush, hearing his brother laughing and the wierd cultist Phony screaming about something or another. "It's safe Aquarius! We can come out now!" He turned noticing a branch of berries stuck in his pal's hair. A smile spread across his face, barely able to hold back his laughter. First the fox, now this! It was just too much for the little pegasus. Rolling over on his side, he let out a good hearty laugh. "Aquarius...you got...a little something right...here..." he said in between laughing, pointing to his head.

Aquarius left the cover of the bushes, his face bright and hot in embarrassment. Well, he definitely overreacted if it was just a fox... poor thing must have been so hungry if they came into a campground to steal food! He giggled at the fox with their jaw full of hotdogs, and was glad they got a tasty treat. At Nimbus' laughter, he reached for his mane, pulling out the branches and berries from it with his hooves."Oh my stars! Why were we being so silly?" he laughed along with Nimbus, his fear and anxiety melting away. He wiped away tears that were once of fear and now were of laughter!

-----------------

Lavender Lemon held onto her best friend for dear life as the tension built and the monster burst forth from the bushes! And couldn't hold back her screams, although when the flash of teeth and fur turned out not to be a beast or a ghost come to eat the children, she let out a nervous laugh. A fox, of all things! Her heart stopped racing, and she covered her mouth as she tittered, joining Torchwood in his amusements. "Sug... a fox! With hot dogs in her mouth!"

This was it! They were all going to di-

What?

Her eyes had screwed shut long ago, so when suddenly laughter erupted from a few foals she was left vastly confused. One eye peeked open, and then another. Wait.... a....

"A fox?!" She squeaked, almost a bit angry at the situation in itself. She had just been convinced this was the end of her life only to discover... it was a fox? A mixture of emotions ran through her before she settled on relief, releasing Lavender Lemon and flopping onto the ground with a loud sigh as her heart beat settled. Oh wow, would she have stories for her family after this...

"Oh my!" Went the pink and white filly as she too let out a coo of delight when the fox appeared. What a cutie pie! See, she told them it probably was more scared of them then they were! ..... Would Mama Noel notice if she brought it home?

When the "monster" appeared, all Light could do was stare at it blankly as she quickly realized what it was. The tension passed with the moment as it disappeared and as her brother began to laugh, she did too, the movement shaking her.
"A f-fox! We were scared by a fox!" She giggled, relief overwhelming her as everyone around her realized what had actually happened. It really was nothing to be scared of after all, just a hungry creature drawn by the scent of food.
