He was hot on the tail of an invader when another jumped out from behind a tree directly into his path. This time he was prepared. He skidded to a halt quickly and spun on his front hooves to kick the enemy square in the chest. He could hear the cry of pain emanating from the creature as the blow connected.
As his rear hooves returned to earth he used his hind leg muscles to rear up and do a quick one-eighty turn and jump over the body of the fallen to resume his chase. He only hoped that he was drawing enough attention away from the young ones so that they could get somewhere safe.

Gazer's mind had been off of the battle at hand; this was costly. As he neared a parting between two trees he felt another hard blow to his head. Once again, he was out cold.
When he awoke this time, he was having a hard time focusing on the world around him. He had certainly taken a beating, but he had to keep trying. He gritted his teeth, and with much more effort than the previous time, he got to his hooves and darted out again. He had to try and catch up so he could hold off the enemy.

Gazer hadn't made it far at all before he fell over on his own and blacked out again. The last hit to the head had really taken its toll on him. He was out for several minutes before he once again regained consciousness.
This time, he got to his hooves more slowly and stayed still for a few seconds before he moved again. Perhaps he had moved too hastily before. With a head injury it was hard to say.
Giving his head a light shake to clear his senses, Gazer set his sights on another shadow.

As Gazer charged after the shadow he had seen, he was tackled and knocked against a tree. He fell almost instantly and landed on the ground with a hard thud. He blacked out once again. However, he wouldn't be out for long before the adrenalin in his system would bring him back around. At least he hadn't taken another hit to the head. He wasn't sure how many more of those he could take.
Slowly he staggered to his feet and ran in the direction of the screams. He knew he would find the invaders hot on the trail of some innocent gala attendee.

As he chased after those fleeing from the invaders, Gazer forgot the most simple rule of all: watch where you're going. It happened in an instant. There was a tree root he didn't see and one of his rear hooves got caught on it. With a neigh of alarm he tumbled completely over and landed with a hard thud on the ground.
Having suffered from two previous whacks to the head, he was knocked unconscious once more. When he finally opened his eyes, he was surprised at how little a distance he had been able to cover. He was still in the clearing and very close to where he had originally started. Some protector he was turning out to be.

This time when he got up, he shook his head to clear it first thing. This was getting a little ridiculous. If he didn't know better, he'd call this all one terrible dream. However, much to his dismay it was in fact a reality. Overall he had made very little impact on the progression of the invaders. However, he figured some was better than none. Thus, he resigned himself to keep trying.
He chased after another invader and full body tackled it. One more down. Too bad for him that it had reinforcements that dropped down on top of him from above. Once more, he was out cold.

His head was beginning to really hurt. He was starting to wonder if he would have permanent brain damage because of all this. Normally he wouldn't be too concerned with this, but having suffered several consecutive blows and being rendered unconscious so many times he had to wonder what effect this would have on him in the long run.
Still, he was determined to keep trying. He was going to try to make as much of a difference as he could. Before he could move, the enemy from just moments before landed one more solid blow to his head. Once more, his world went black and fell into silence.

After waking up yet once more in the clearing, Gazer looked around. His eyes were foggy with uncertainty and he felt like he had been hit repeatedly; this was because he had been, though it took him several minutes to remember what had happened up to this point. The last blow to the head had messed with his memory. He really didn't need to get hit in the head anymore.
Staggering to his feet, he ran off in the direction that everyone else had taken. He wasn't sure how long he had been out, but there shouldn't be that many invaders still coming should there? At least that was his thought till he accidentally ran over one because he couldn't see it due to his foggy vision. This mattered little, however, the beast was trampled under his hooves which took care of it. He was going to keep going this time.

Or at least he had thought he was going to keep going. He had barely made it a few steps when another invader got the drop on him. In his already weakened state it didn't take much to send him back to the ground. Once down he was hit once more on his head, above his horn. Again, he was forced into darkness.
Once awake, he lay there few almost an entire minute before he realized that the noise he was hearing was screaming. Why was there screaming? He was having a hard time focusing. Why did he feel so bad? As a twig snapped behind him, signaling another attack, he remembered. Getting up with great effort, he turned to meet his would be attacker head on.

Luck was with him this time. As the attacker launched itself at him, Gazer turned around and launched his own attack, throwing his hind legs up and kicking the invader in the head. That was one less enemy to worry about. Without hesitation, he took off in the direction that the others had headed.

As he continued on he heard a voice behind him. "Wait for me!" Someone else was still trying to make it too, but as he stopped and turned to help the mare, whoever she was, he heard a loud roar. He barely felt the blow land as his world went black. There was nothing he could do to help her. He was rendered unconscious again.
((I just realized that this last roll, and two others I did wrong. I should have rolled a 1d6 instead of 1d4 but I was tired last night when I started this. I apologize.))

Having been hit in the head so much, Gazer's body was struggling to keep up with the demands he was making of it. As he became conscious once more, he heard the mare scream as she fell. There was nothing he could do. He felt so bad. He tried to get up, but he couldn't. Instead he fell back down onto his side.
"I'm so sorry...." he whispered as his mind once again faded into unconsciousness.

Once more, when he woke up, he found himself in the clearing. It was becoming an all too familiar sight. This was something he disliked greatly. The sound of the mare echoed in his head. He had wanted to help her, but he had been too weak. Feeling guilty, he decided it was high time to try and make it to the rest of the heard. He wasn't much help out here anyway. He had good intentions, but he just wasn't strong enough, and his body couldn't take much more of a beating. If he kept going, it might cost him his own life.
As he staggered to his feet, he leaned up against the tree for support. His legs were just too weak though. Despite leaning against the tree, he fell back to the ground. He felt dizzy and lightheaded. This time, he didn't fight it, he let the his mind succumb to the darkness.

His body was so weak. How many times had he gone unconscious? He couldn't remember. He had lost count of how many times he'd suffered a blow to the head. It was taking its toll on him.
Once more, he tried to get up and lean against the tree but as he took a few steps forward he was hit in the head again, and once more, like all the other times before, he went down like a rock with a loud thud.

This time, when he opened his eyes, he gritted his teeth against the pain in his head. Or at least he tried too, but even that hurt now. With a heavy heart, he got up once more and very slowly made his way to where the rest of the herd had headed.
After a very long walk, and feeling much the worse for wear, he finally caught up to the others. Everyone was gathered about, chattering and crying amongst themselves. He stopped short of the main group and laid down next to a tree to rest. He simply didn't have the strength to hold himself up any longer.
His thoughts turned to the invaders. Who were they? Why had they attacked? More importantly, would the herd truly be safe here? How long? There were a multitude of questions, but no answers.
