At least Briar seemed to understand the mum thing, Kirra thought. Not all the big kids did.

Her face split into a wide wide smile when he agreed, and it stretched to the point where her cheeks hurt when he described the best tree.

“Awesome, spy tree!” she said, as she imagined the view down onto all the sandpit kids. It was so great being up high and taller than even tall grown-ups. She hoped she’d be big enough to follow Briar all the way up.

“Okay, next time, then! It was great to see you, Briar! Seeeeeeya!” With a last cheerful wave, she jogged off back to her waiting mother, the promise of next-time adventures more than enough to make her forget her earlier near-tears and keep her going until next playtime.
