Deciding it would be too much to make her face him, he rolled his own eyes and then took several photos. "I'll happily do it for you, yeah," Jack agreed. "But Death division works differently than Sun. I don't know specifics, but even by virtue of the leadership alone you'll have to adapt to something new. Caelius isn't just creepy, he's brutal. Who do you think took Finn's eye out?"

Chel turned back around, confidence clearly waning on her face. "I dunno I thought a monster did it or somethin'. Like me."

Arms went back to her sides, scratching at the unusual material absently. "It was just an idea I dunno man," she mumbled, "I can probably still find a way to help you from sun." The scratching went from her arm to the side of her head. "I mean now that I got the bracelet off I can probably sneak into the archives somehow..." Already turning her plan around at the first sign of hardship and resitance.

Owain chided him for scaring her, and Jack sighed through his nose. She was back pedaling. "Death has more mobility; you'll only keep hitting walls in Sun, the way you want to go about this," he said. "Otherwise you wouldn't have considered it at all."

Checking over his shoulder that the attendant wasn't giving him the stink eye, he stepped a little closer, enough to be able to put a hand on her shoulder. "S'not like anything else we do doesn't come with risks anyway. I still like the idea. It's a natural progression from the original one we talked about a long time ago, the one about getting close to them to find out their weaknesses. You're just taking it into your own hands," he added a little more proudly.

Chel brushed the hand off her shoulder. "I don't want to find their weaknesses." More tired sounding she admitted, "I don't wanna be a killin' machine no more." At least, not in a generalized, unknowing way. Now she wanted to be more like the arrows she shot; sharp a precise, aimed at a single target. Namely whoever her friends and loved ones told her to shoot at.

She gave a sideways look to the attendant and coughed lightly, stepping away from him and moving back to the stall for another dress. "I can tell you more later. I mean I haven't decided on nothin'." The door was shut and the first dress came off, haphazardly tossed onto the ground with the rest of her clothes. There was no bravado about it, no care for the cloth. Just more cursing and stepping into a second dress, which she then stepped out of the stall in. She at least liked this one better, since it allowed her more movement of her legs. It just looked a little out of place with how short her frame was.

Jack took his seat again and replied with a simple, "Sure." Some disappointment that today was a day full of disconnects, wrong words and rebuffs and disparate levels of enjoyment, but sure.

He allowed his annoyance to vent as he made a face at the second dress; he'd underestimated its length. "That one's a no. Too long. You'll probably just trip on it half the time."

Chel was wondering if she'd done something wrong when he was looking at her so irritably, only to find out it was the dress. Indeed it was a day of disconnects, because Chel mumbled, "Kinda liked this one," as she trudged back to the stall.

This was also why she disliked shopping. A lot of disappointment from all ends, a lot of insecurity and a bucket of tired quips that eventually turned into tired arguments. But she did come out in a third dress. The navy color actually served her pink hair to make her look a bit older while still retaining her youthful attitude.

She continued to talk: "I wanna write the forms out myself if I do though. It's personal." More honestly, she mumbled, "But f'you could look over 'em or whatever that'd be cool."

He nodded in understanding. "I'll consider it practice for when the reports start coming my way in earnest."

After another few moments of looking the dress over, indicating Chel to turn this way or that, Jack hummed in thought. "What do you think?" he asked. "How's it feel? Should I go look for that second one in a smaller size?"

How did she feel? Like she'd been shopping for two hours and it was already two hours too many.

"I think it'd look better on my floor," she said, shooting him a double pistols sort of wink before coughing lightly and saying, "S'alright. Up to you man. You wanna spend your special bet money on me lookin' like a blue crayon, go for it."

She turned for him, showing him all the angles as directed. "There really that much paperwork?"

He snorted at the display and said, "If it's anything like Life, yeah. Or at least a lot of people I've met seem to complain about it." Again he took a few photos and flipped between shots of different dresses, considering them. For some reason, remembering how each photo was like another tooth pulled to her bothered him more.

"Pass me the first two. I'll see if I can find that one you like in a smaller size, or something similar."

Chel walked back to the stall and reached over the edge to pull the dresses off the ground. "Really, don't worry 'bout what I like. I think I look shitty in just about everythin'. Pick what you like."

Dresses were handed over and she patted his hands idly. "You won the net man. You gotta act like it." There was a smirk to show that even shopping, she was happy if it was with him. Bored out of her mind, insecure as hell, but still happy.

"I am," Jack insisted. "Why do you think I'm taking photos and picking s**t out myself? I like seeing you like this, even though it means putting up with your bitching." He smoothed the dresses out and put them back on their hangers, unsurprised that Chel had treated them without courtesy.

Motioning for her to wait, he disappeared back into the racks of dresses, returning the pair to their rightful places and scanning around for new options. He managed to find the lengthy one with a thigh slit in the next size smaller, another black number, a dress similar to the "blue crayon" though in a dark purple, and nearly brought out a red one as well before deciding that this particular hue would just desaturated his already pale a** girlfriend. When he returned, Jack held them out and said, "Try these. If none of them work, then...hell, I don't know. We can take a break." He hasn't quite realized yet how much time had already passed.

Chel couldn't help the blush, but stubbornly held onto her glare as he walked away.

While he had been surfing the racks, Chel had momentarily slunk away to find a certain dress in her size that she'd noticed earlier. Jack's assertions had instigated his annoyance, and Chel would do anything to avoid it, even go shopping for herself.

"Um ... can do Batman, but I found one so-" She let out a long breath through her nose. "Just let me show you this one and then I'll try those ones." She took the dresses he'd picked out and put them on a hook, closing the stall door with no further explanation.

"Jack?" Moments later she stepped out in a very expensive dress. The edge just barely scraped along the ground, but in heels it wouldn't be a problem. Chel combed her hair sideways and pulled it over one shoulder, tugging on it anxiously. "I saw this one and thought you might ... I dunno."

"Sunshine is always the right word to match your bright sunshiney face," Chris said with the kind of deadpan that came from years of practice.

It took a moment for the meaning to sink in, and he squinted in confusion. "Death? Really? But you're all," he did a pathetic one-two punch mime, "bam bam. You beat s**t to a pulp and I back you up. That's how it works."

"I know I know," she said quickly. She'd had some time since her shopping trip with Jack and it had solidified her confidence somewhat. That and shooting the s**t with Chris would always be easier than any conversation elsewhere.

She blocked his punches apathetically and said, "I'd still back you up man. Always." She let out a long sigh and said, "I just think I could help you better from Death. Get all that sick a** info." She gave him a sharp look. "Like findin' your shapeshifter."

He wasn't sure if the feeling that twisted in his chest was excitement or terror. He wanted to prove himself against the shapeshifter so goddamn badly. But the through of Chel facing it and potentially coming to the same fate, or worse? He'd run in the opposite direction any day. "Yeah, that'd be awesome," he said in a voice that said he very much wasn't sure it would be.

"You could do more missions in Halloween yeah? Get more info from the rest of Penumbra?" He nodded thoughtfully for a moment, but then his face fell comically fast. "Who's going to be my sun and stars?"
