“But you can't have ground on the ocean!” chimed one of the more stubborn students.

“She means the next level.” Keke explained, “Magescians build in layers, so they can fit more in one space, like the cliff lairs back home.”

“Oh... But its all wood.” noted the orakoi, sniffing it experimentally. They wrinkled their nose. “Stinky wood.”

Keke chuckled and let them all file down the stairs after Xenosa. Used to the rocky slopes of their tribal lands, the young khehora had no problem managing to make their way down without incident, though there was some flaring of wings as they tottered on the creaky things. Keke followed, his sleek body just barely fitting through the doorway.

“Its cold...” one of them complained, tucking their wings around them.

“No colder than a cave, my dear.” Keke said, giving them a playful nudge, “Your home is full of drafts. This should feel like home to you.”

“Cept his home doesn't smell.” complained the one from before, their nose still wrinkled. Keke decided to ignore them.

“This is your lair?” he asked Xenosa, moving to the side so that the Orakoi could have a better view. “It looks very temporary... Is your main lair on Serenia?”

“She has two lairs?!” exclaimed one of the Orakoi, shocked. They looked to the captains room longingly, as if they wished it was just a little bit open... Keke decided to keep a closer eye on them.

“I guess you could say that I own more than one lair. Perhaps, more like…” Xenosa made a short mental count. “More like four lairs. But yes this is one of my lairs and my main one is back home in Serenia. I also have a cottage and another lair I can’t tell you where it is.” She gave them a smiled and moved on to go down some steps again. “This here under my room is the kitchen and where we store most of the food to feed everyone on board.” Xenosa turned to the opposite and walked into a room that was where they stored cargo and where the sailors stayed.

“This is where everyone else lives. We keep cargo in here too. But that’s it. What do you guys think?” She’d walked in so they could get a better view of inside the belly of the ship. On one side the sailors slept but the rest of the ship was open to fill it.

“Four lairs?!” exclaimed one of the Orakoi. Even Keke was startled – it seemed like such a lot of space to have, when one could only be in one at a time.

“For travel.” explained Keke, “A lair wherever she goes so she can always have a place to call home.” He didn't ask about her 'secret' lair, or mention it: His sister was a Diabi – he knew all about secret lairs and why they needed to be kept a secret.

The rest of the tour was uneventful but interesting – Keke mentally noted down everything he saw: barrels and crates of food for the journey, cargo and hammocks in an enormous cavernous room...

“Incredible!” he replied, awed by the ingenuity of it all: these were goods they made and harvested, transported in a cavernous, seagoing beast that they had built themselves, that disgorged them at their destination, unharmed. “Magescians have truly mastered the art of travel!”

“I wanna go back” said one of the Orakoi, who looked a little green despite the ship still being docked and becalmed.

“I wanna go with her on adventures!” chimed one of them excitedly. Keke nudged them gently with his tail. “Maybe when you're a little older.” he said, “But for now, I think your parents will want you home.”

The secretive Ayrala hatchling, sensing that it was nearing time to leave, rubbed gently along Xenosa's side in a fond farewell before clustering next to Keke.

“Well, with that...” the Teacher said, amused, “We should probably leave you to your... boating?” he tilted his head, “Or is it swhaling? I'd like to show them a little of the city outskirts before I take them back home...”
