In the middle of trying to cook dinner one day, an abysmal attempt at rice for a dish that had burned and stuck straight to the pot because she had day dreamed for too long again, she stopped trying to scrape them and blinked and remembered what it was she had been thinking of. "Do you think hunters have to be good at missions?" she asked Gale out of the blue.

She was right; Bix had come back, even if it had taken a while for Gale to realize that he was still alive, to admit to himself that he was real and that he still existed. But he still remembered being curled up Candace's bed, her arms around him, her gentle whispers in his ear as he'd fallen apart, piece by piece.

Cool fingers slipped the cigarette from his own; Gale dragged himself out of the memories and brushed his hand over Stormy's temple in idle gestures.

"I don't know," he said softly. "The...my eye, I suppose, is a part of it."

He hadn't told her yet what had happened, because she hadn't asked, and he hadn't wanted to burden her with something else on top of the pain that seemed to be in her very veins. There was no way she wasn't wondering, but it had seemed a little small, almost inconsequential compared to his desire to be as supportive as possible for Stormy.

Gale exhaled a breath and smiled a little at her, the smell of smoke drifting up to meet his nose.

Gale was sitting on the couch with a notebook and a cup of tea, absently jotting down different perspectives on various aspects of his life. It wasn't quite a journal so much as it was just simple observations, with the occasional attempt at penning a poem or scribbling a (very messy and awful) doodle in the margin.

He lifted his head at her words, catching the scent of burnt food only as an afterthought, his reading glasses perched on the end of his nose.

"I suppose it depends on the mission," said Gale, contemplating this as he set his tea down on the coffee table. "Or the hunter, really. It's kind of a broad question, do you have something more specific in mind?"

Tuck had been laying low, for all intents and purposes. He'd spent a healthy chunk of time feeling guilty for what he'd put everyone through, and admittedly there were still times that he loathed himself. Sometimes it was easier to be alone and he'd come to terms with that. He was still living in his own dorm room, and he was fine with it. It was easier that way.

"Good," Tuck answered for himself, watching Stormy carefully. The near frenetic way she moved put him a little on edge - the nicotine that barely lingered on the air only compounded that feeling. Tuck kept silent; if Evan wanted to say something, he could. There was a thin veil of fragility that seemed to shroud Stormy, and the big Moon couldn't put his thumb on it.

So, instead of causing trouble - and in order to preserve the desperate sense of normalcy that pervaded the room - Tuck remained silent.

"How you been, little bit?"

Evan was not used to biting back his concern where Stormy was concerned, preferring to confront it head on so she didn't have to deal with it anymore. He was trying, though--he knew, had known, that he couldn't save Stormy from everything, and sometimes that included herself.

That didn't mean he had to sit there and like it, though. His eyes tracked Stormy's movements as she puttered around in the kitchen. He wanted to get up and sit her down between him and Tuck and make her tell them what was wrong--why she was smoking, why she was edgy, what had happened to the door, even where that boy of hers was--but she seemed to be trying very hard to act as though everything was okay, and he would respect that. For now.

"Not bad," he said. "You want some help in there?"

She didn't understand the little smile or what it was doing there and averted her eyes back down to the stick she was inadvertently chewing. Bitter tastes flooded her mouth. She tugged the cigarette out by his fingers and let their elbows sit where they would for the moment while she tried not to pucker her face in response; it was a step up from accidentally crying. Ash tray, Stormy belatedly remembered. But that would require getting up.

Like water, she poured herself in and sought the crack. "Wanna talk about it?"

She mm'd and gave the scraping another stab, decided it wasn't worth the effort anymore, and placed the pot in the sink. "I'm thinking the...non-mission kind," Stormy explained as the turned the faucet on and filled it up to hopefully soften the rice patches. "What if I focused on the stuff at home? Like..."

Either she lost her train of thought for a few seconds, or watching the pot fill up was very interesting.

"Instead of going out all the time, I help the people trying to make this island....some place to actually live."

He didn't understand the smile himself either; it was more just a tired reaction, involuntary at best.

"My eye?" Gale asked, the puckered expression on Stormy's face making him a little anxious, a little wary. He wondered if she was dissatisfied with his answers, not that he could blame her, considering he was dissatisfied with his own. He felt there was no right answer here, tripping over his own two feet. The desperate desire to help her, to stay with her, remained within him, a slow burn.

His hand lifted, touched the eyepatch that, while not strictly necessary to wear, made him feel a little better anyway about his blurred vision.

"It was a Horseman," said Gale softly, by way of simple explanation. "She took me captive for a few days, but I managed to get out. I can still see, it's just, it's a little blurry, is all."

He rubbed at it. "A lot blurry, I suppose. I'm still trying to get used to it, but I'll manage."

He considered this for a moment, lost in thought, because it was actually kind of an interesting concept. Gale had not given much thought to those that stayed on the island, but now that it had been brought up, there had to be some that remained in order to run things from Headquarters. It made sense.

"I don't...necessarily see why not," said Gale, mulling this new information over inside of his head. "I mean...there are many things that can be done only here, and obviously there need to be people to stay on the island when others go out."

He lifted his head, turning his gaze towards her.

"Are you wanting to do something like that? Rather than be in the field?"

ashes to ashes

It was a risk, asking to hear about it. Stormy had an awful habit of absorbing too much of what was around her, from the happiness of a simple hang out with friends that permeated the walls long after to the cycle of sadness and apathy she had soaked into the very air, humid and hard to breathe. Horseman was enough for her to take, judging by the hitch in her breath. Captive for a few days. Blurry. And she had, what, been sitting alone doing God only knew?

The taste became too bitter. She wanted to toss the cigarette out and scream as she crushed it under her bare foot. She wanted something to burn her for her crimes until she felt absolved and pure again.

Stormy sat up a little, sunken eyes bright, and touched his cheek below the bandage, letting him hold the cigarette on his own. "I-I'm sorry," she said in a thick voice. "Gale--" She blinked and the tears were one step closer to the edge, her breathing that much more uneven. She could have been there. She should have been there.

"I'm good!" she answered them both with more pep than she felt, struggling to remember. What did they like on their sandwiches again? Did she even have--no she didn't, she'd neglected to go get food again--but what about--no this is overdue, toss it out--was the bread even good anymore, the twist she'd stuck on its plastic cover was undone and she couldn't remember, she couldn't remember something so stupid and easy--

"Gale's away in California right now," she added, more to distract herself than to explain anything. Her voice cracked without meaning to, and she moved even faster as if that could compensate. Crackers. Crackers were safe. What did you eat with crackers again? Cheese, chicken salad, baloney--peanut butter. She knew that stuff kept a while. "Nothing dangerous at least! Just investigating some weird stuff at a school with some other people."

Stormy unwrapped several rolls of Ritz, grabbed the peanut butter jar and several knives, and made her way to the living room after setting it all on a plate. "Sorry," she told them with an apologetic smile that was more the former than the latter. She wasn't used to smiling these days. "Forgot to go grocery shopping, hah...So nothing's been going on? Really? I kinda don't believe that, you guys, you're too popular."

Stormy squinted at them both in her best nosy little sister impression. She didn't know what she was silently begging for more: for them to let her continue pretending she was okay, or for someone to just pull her apart.

"I-I think so." It was so hard for her to make concrete decisions that even when presented with a better alternative to her current situation, Stormy hesitated. She opened her mouth to continue, then decided the distance no longer was necessary. Gale's opinion mattered, maybe too much; he hadn't expressed disinterest or dismissal, and now she felt safe to approach and continue down this thought's particular train tracks.

"Maybe it'll be better," she continued, sinking into the space beside Gale rather than occupy his lap and completely, physically and verbally, interrupt. "Maybe--Maybe without me worrying so much about the next bad mission out, I-I can do something. We can't both, we can't," she tried to find the words, made vague gestures with one of her hands, "can't...can't come back like this all the time. Worn and beaten and just...You've been there. You've been there so much," she emphasized softly. "One day you'll need me to be there. And--And I don't know if...Maybe next time I can make it, maybe next time I won't knot up and tangle and be this noose around your neck, maybe next time I can be there and still be there, but I'm scared that next time maybe I-I won't, Gale. I'm scared."

She wouldn't notice it until much later, but this was progress. She was speaking in her usual haphazard fashion, but it was the usual.

"I'm scared," she repeated weakly.

Tuck glanced over at Evan very briefly, almost pleadingly -- you gotta say something because I can't -- before rubbing his hand along his bristly jaw. His heart told him - hell, Herryk echoed the sentiment - to stride into the kitchen and wrap her up in his arms and bury his face in her neck as though he could soak up all that was weighing her down so she wouldn't have to carry the burden. He wanted to inhale all the stink that followed her around so that the pretty flowers she wore could bloom again. He wanted to help. He wanted to be an answer, not a problem.

"Honestly, ain't been up to much. Just work an' sleep. Spendin' time with Heidi when we both got the time. Dickin' around on twitter when I should be sleepin'."

Tuck cleared his throat as she set down the plate. He reached out for a knife and a cracker to smear the peanut butter on.

He could tell by the sharp intake of breath, the widening of her eyes, too bright to be normal, too bright to be considered okay, that she was tearing herself apart. Gale's heart skittered a little in his chest as she touched his cheek, and he lifted his free hand to cover hers and keep it there, curling his fingers.

"Hey," he said softly, and pulled her to him, careful not to drop the cigarette or get it on her clothes, his arm looping around her waist to keep her against his chest. Gale tilted his head down and pressed his lips to her temple once before pressing his forehead against hers, exhaling a slightly shaky breath.

"Don't you dare blame yourself," he said softly, firmly, and he closed his eyes briefly, giving a minute shake of his head. "I was able to come back to you, that's what matters to me."

He reached for her hand as she sat next to him, an almost automatic gesture as he slid his fingers over hers and gave them a little squeeze. In spite of Stormy's uncertain, trembling words, the cadence of them was slowly easing back into something more familiar, something more reminiscent of her usual self. Something warm blossomed in Gale's chest, spreading throughout his heart.

"You're not a noose," he said quietly, which was true, but he understood what she was saying. Having both of them coming back, broken and beaten, was taking its toll, and continuing this way was making Gale afraid that things would only get worse.

His hand shifted, turning so that he could lace their fingers together.

"Me too," Gale said softly, almost audible, and his breathing hitched in his throat, his eyes dropping down, and admitting it out loud made him realize just how scared he'd been this entire time, just how fragile everything felt. "I fear one day I'll come back to an empty room, or you will, and I don't want that, I can't let that happen for either of us."

He drew her hand up and kissed her knuckles, his breath shaky over her skin.

"This could be better," he said, taking a deep breath. "This could be what helps you - helps us - move forward." Gale's fingers tightened on hers, and he hadn't moved them away from his face, clutching them like a lifeline. "I want to help you untangle your knots."
