He rumbled thoughtfully, his eyes darting about to check for movement. "Not sure...Guess they don' go near places with old power r' somethin'?" Dawson suggested. "Like it cancels out Fear? Iunno."
For once, not even a shirtless Maebe could stop him. It did make him stutter a bit mentally and blush some with the close contact, but the adventure was at hand and more immediate.
"...Wait, no. They just recognize royalty, m'lady," he corrected himself with a big grin.
When they hit the corridor of Bad Water, Dawson made a motion for her to stop for a moment and unhooked their arms. He had to see if he could do something about the dang stuff in there...Knightly Duties and all.
Not far into the water, however, he was yanked down by vines, tossed about, and then thrown sputtering again at the beginning. He rolled over and coughed, face wrinkling in disgust at the taste. "The hell, did the old gods piss in this or somethin'..."

Although the first explanation had been much more realistic, it was the second one that brought a smile to her face.
"But of course, Sir Grace." She coo'd, allowing him to let go enough to try and take the lead. Of course, as soon as he entered the water, she remembered how easily this area had separated them, and trudged in herself.
He went flying back to the start, and she stood there watching him - she would have returned to help, but she felt frozen with dread.
Not dread. Sticky, writhing, living tar. Dread turned to screaming as she kicked and tore her way out of whatever she'd just stepped in, determined not to fall victim to whatever the hell was trying to hentai its way up her leg.

Sputtering, he rolled over and forced himself to lunge back into the mud after her. "God damnit s**t!" he grumbled loudly, forgetting he was in the presence of a lady temporarily. "Almost would rather shadowlings than this."

She heard the sickening squelch of Dawson returning to try and pull her out of the muck, but she knew a moment before he started cursing that he was simply dooming himself as well. She continued slugging out of it, grinding her teeth at the way it all writhed and wriggled around her bare legs, and tried to pull her down so it could have more. She used every ounce of her strength to pull her legs up and out, but every time she took a step she felt like she was losing two.
"I hate this, I hate this, I want to file a sexual harassment report on this slime, I ******** hate this."

She screamed again when it pulled her down, and for one single moment it almost caught her arm, sending her reeling to one side. The panic of knowing she was going to go under had the adrenaline pulsing through her veins, giving her the strength to move faster, pull harder, and get away at all costs.

Her screams were turning less angry and more panicky. The adrenaline could only last so long, and the muscles in her thighs were burning with pain and stress. She was failing, which meant whatever the hell was writhing down in there was going to overpower her.
She did not take kindly to the idea of being overpowered.

Flashes of something she didn't want to admit she remembered came flooding back into her mind as the gunk inched up her legs, pulling and tugging at her skin with each gained inch. She smelled cigar smoke and oil, and money, always the smell of money- Her skin felt like it was being ripped off when she finally charged forward, gaining ground out of the muck until her body found stable water again. She didn't wait to be cautious as she probably should have - the moment she realized she wasn't being held back anymore, Maebe ran like a bat out of hell all the way to the end of the pool, and threw herself at the dry ground, clinging to it for dear life. She couldn't even get up long enough to look for Dawson. Her nails dug into the ground, and her feet buried themselves as far down as they would go. She was free now. And she wasn't moving. Maebe's sounds of distress tore at him, but the mud kept it's grip. Hands balling into fists, he forced one foot out of the mud and plunged it back down a great step ahead to try and compensate.

Eventually the mud began to hold less and less, and after several near trips, Dawson mowed through the patch of angry mud and waded to the otherside. Maebe's screams were still ringing in his ears, and after falling over himself to give his legs a break, he scooched closer with a worried look. "Mayb?" He hesitantly tried to put a hand on her bare back. "Hun, it's okay now, yer good." Stamina: 9

She felt the hand pressing against her back, but it did nothing to move her for a moment. "I know. I'm just trying to avoid being washed away while I wait for you." She mumbled into the ground, belately turning her head to look up at him. At least they were safe now, and the wave hadn't washed her away yet. She started to push herself up into a seated position, brushing the dirt off of her body and face. "There's something really unnerving about whatever that stuff was. I'm a little nervous about the prospect of having to return to it, even if we do always make it out eventually. It's almost like it's alive, and definitely malicious." Time, and the comfort of not moving gave her enough strength to start to stand, but she'd only made it only one foot before the wave trolled her right off of the ground and sent her packing to the other end of the lake. When she washed up on it, facing up and staring at the ceiling, Dawson could very clearly hear her response to this entire situation. "s**t."Stamina: 6

Exhaustion was starting to creep up on her, making her move slower as she crawled up and back into the lake. She was too tired to fight the vines that wrapped around her ankles and dragged her like a ragdoll back to the beginning.
"I want, like, 50 ******** cheeseburgers after all of this."

But the vines were a blessing compared to the sticky, living entity that started wrapping around her on her next try, reminding her just how unnerving it really was. She froze for a moment, as if hoping that staying still could convince it that she was dead, but it only sunk her down deeper. She growled in frustration as she kicked, clawed, and tugged her way out of it.

But as it was with most things in Maebe's life, there was always a hard limit, and it came quickly. She fought through the sludge one final time and splattered onto the shore, rubbing her sore, pulsing thigh muscles with her hands. "DAWSON," She called out, her voice hoarse from screaming. "I DON'T THINK I CAN WALK FOR A WHILE. YOU'VE GOT TO GO ON WITHOUT ME." It sounded like some kind of cheesy sacrifice moment from a b rated adventure movie, but in truth, Maebe really just wanted to lie there and stop moving for a while. There was nothing romantic, or self-sacrificing about it. It was pure exhaustion coupled with her core value of laziness. Luckily, exhaustion did not affect her sarcasm. "I'LL NEVER LET GO, JACK." There was so much whining going on it was unbelievable. Dawson's hands clenched and unclenched uselessly as Maebe was swept away, and for a while he didn't want to move even when prompted. He could just go back and then they could start over together and--
Then he got swept back to her position.
