"Oh." The dissonance between Chance's casualness and the words spoken with it confused him further, though unlike the sad fact that not every house had a television, this was enough to make him level a more defined frown. Dawson didn't know if it was rude to pry or not, but the guy hadn't explicitly said he didn't want to talk about it...
"Well, she had you, yeah?" he ventured. "I'd be happy 'bout that even if life weren't so good."

Dawson gave a great snort of laughter himself at the impression. "The hell was that? You bein' a pirate?" He snickered some more as he imagined Chance next to Claude, smilingly glibly and wearing an eyepatch.
You know what, why not?
"Aye, IIIII be a likeable feller in some manner, Missster Bonezzz." Drunk pirate voice time. "Now Captin Grace, he knoezzz it's not the werk like you, you...fancy Asian..." He lost track of it and just gestured with the flashlight like it was a bottle of alcohol. "You could even say art's just not written in the stars fer him!
He then proceeded to laugh like Mr. Crabs.

the very basics
"Oh," said Chance, mulling this over in his head, a thoughtful expression on his face. He stepped into the cafeteria, giving a nod of thanks that Dawson had held the door open for him, and said musingly, "So food can also be an indicator of one's moods? Or rather, it can be a catalyst for stronger emotions?"
He hadn't realized that there could be a correlation between the two. Chance glanced around the cafeteria with more interest now, shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants.
"I love steak," he said with a smile as they neared the beginning of the line where the trays and plates were stacked. "I think my favorite foods are usually pretty spicy, though."

Chance lifted his head to give Dawson a smile.
"Don't worry," he said lightly. "I'm not gonna wallow in self-despair just because of a shitty childhood. Yeah, it wasn't great, and it took a lot just to get out of it in the first place, but..." He shrugged. "I am who I am. I'm not gonna pretend that I didn't have a shitty childhood, but I won't let it get to me, either."
He would have patted Dawson's shoulder reassuringly, but Dawson was too far away, so Chance settled for just giving him a thumbs up and a gentle laugh.
"You've got such a lovely way with words, Shaggy, thank you," he said, eyes twinkling with pleasure. "I'm happy I'm here."

"Trying to be one, being the key word," said Chance meaningfully, and then he smirked. "Or rather, trying to imitate a certain someone, though clearly I have failed in my attempts."
He nudged Dawson's side, and rolled his eyes. "You are a likeable feller," said Chance, swaggering along beside the other. "Captain Grace - wait how did you get to be a Captain, what does that make me - you are definitely some likeable feller, you're pretty cool - "
A hand reached out and pushed at Dawson's shoulder. "There's plenty that's written in the stars for you, my good man."
