When Dania reacted to her mere argument with Simosihle so dramatically, Nolaka snarled in truth, her iwn ears flat and tail lashing as she hunkered down to pounce- until Ukuthula stepped on her tail, reversing their circumstqnces from earlier, and Nolaka snapped at the air between herself and her friend instead.

"What was that you said about scrapping?" Thula remarked cheekily, releasing the other lioness' tail...and then lifting an eyebrow at Isasa. "Do you live in a hole, or have you not noticed that we call all the desert lions red-pelts?"

Meanwhile, Nolaka glared at Dania, teeth bared, but said nothing.

User ImageThe bird bobbed up and down excitedly. How eventful this small gathering was turning out to be! This was more entertaining than anything that ever happened out in roguelands. Lions snapping at each other, squabbling over...well Thola still couldn't quite make out what they were fighting over. They wanted males, but only a certain type of male, and that certain type was nowhere to be found. Thola didn't understand why they didn't just go out and find a good pool of males they liked and picked from those. No vulture she had ever met would be so picky.
But it was not Thola's place to judge. Her role in the pride was to help find food and water, not pick the lions' mates for them.
She regarded Andhaka with a beady stare. Ah yes, one of the pride's males she had seen. Or at least, she assumed he was with the pride. It was hard to tell with the other red pelts. To Thola, he looked exactly like one of them. "Red pelt! Red pelt!" The vulture squawked at the male's approach, wings flapping dramatically.

She had been lost in thought for a while. Letting the red pelts, the desert lions near them was no good. A bad feeling, even the strange new male Machozi had assured them so. Then it also had to be said that it was not a half bad idea to take a non-redpelt from them, seeing as they didn't want any non-redpelts in their pride at all. Or well, they had a few non-redpelts but those were usually blacks or whites. Not browns.

Her head swerved quickly when Thola squawked about a redpelt nearing them. The last thing they needed was one of them eavesdropping on their meeting and discovering the lack of Abaholi in doing such. She relaxed slightly however when she realized it was Andhaka, one of their own.

The relaxed feeling did not stick, she wasn't sure how to feel about him coming near the meeting.

Ukungcola stood and stretched calmly despite feeling so restless on the inside. "The redpelts... The desert lions. They do not like those with brown pelts, could we not talk to those they've kicked out?" Her words were slow and her voice seemed sleepy and lazy as she spoke. Overall Ukungcola had just been feeling tired lately, she made no effort to hide this in her voice.

"Enough!" Ukwazi's voice rang out with a snarl of her own to add to those of the other lionesses'.

The tan Umzingeli's hackles raised as she stood under the shadow of the lifeless tree. "If a red-pelt wants to become an Umholi, he must challenge for it as much as any male will have to. Andhaka has already proven his worth, unlike any of the Lusizi or Ahluke in the pride, by besting Nguvu who, as already mentioned, bested Jasiri."

Tossing a glance to the newly arrived Inselelo, Ukwazi snorted. "As it stands though, Andhaka is the best we have for defending the pride. Cubs could be raised to fight for the right to lead us and Lusizi could as well, but neither as of this moment could defend us." Her head turned towards the outpost with a look of mild disgust. Ukushisa had contemplated leaving for the red-pelts once upon a time, but that dream had quickly fell to the wind and was forgotten. "If they want the pride, they'll have to fight their way into it, but to address the immediate concern, Andhaka is who I support becoming Umholi."

After her initial input, Ukulambile had fallen quiet so that others could discuss and argue, eyes bright and ears up and alert, both enthralled and entertained by the proceedings. While others were uncertain, stressed, or even angry, Uku found it all very exciting. She was almost disappointed when Ukwazi called for it to stop, but the disappointment was fleeting at best.

"Oh, oh, are we voting?" she chirped eagerly. "Is that what we're doing? Because I don't want a red-pelt - or a, um, red-pelt who isn't red? - either. I guess Jasiri wouldn't be bad, except for his mane, I don't like that. So I'd say Andhaka, I guess. I don't think he's ever actually done anything to anyone, yeah? Just Nguvu. And maybe he wasn't very nice to the Lusizi, but...they're Lusizi. He's been nice to the rest of us, or at least not not nice."

"...uh, hi, by the way," she added, glancing in the Inselelo's direction and flashing an awkward smile. "Kind of weird, talking about someone while they're sitting right there. Sorry, I guess?"

Andhaka didn't respond verbally to the chatty Umzingeli, but he did dip his head and offer the slightest of smiles, which was enough acknowledgement for her own smile to brighten.

Her snarl increased in frequency when Nolaka crouched, even as she twisted, going from her belly onto to her side, on front paw raised to fend off the leap that was about to come. There was no question that the small female was the weaker, but she was still a lioness, with a lioness' resiliance.

Subsiding when Ukwazi snapped at them, Dania fell silent, laying flat on her side panting a little roughly. After a moment she dropped her head to the ground despite Nolaka's continued glaring. Dania bared her own fangs in return, but the brief moment of bravery was gone and she simply lay still, only her heaving sides moving as she panted, where she lay sprawled now before the Umama.

User ImageVoting? Well that would be boring. Thola would much rather have everyone snarling and snapping at each other again. Birds didn't vote. It wasn't like they got together and democratically elected who would get to feed from a carcass. No, out there it was every beak for themselves. Maybe these...civilized lions had a different way of doing things. It seemed a bit silly to have them fighting over which male was stronger than another, and then vote on who was the strongest instead of making them show it. But Thola guessed that these lions must know their males well enough. The vulture still had a lot to learn.
However, there could be a fight over the votes! Oh yes, that would be fun to see. Perhaps she'd stick around to watch a little longer.

The last thing Jagazi expected was to be bombarded from above, and she turned her head up and snarled at the vulture. She wasn't sure what 'tournament' meant but she wasn't about to agree with the bird.

"Hey!" she called, "That's not fair. You're lucky I can't reach you up there!"

She almost missed Nolaka's comment.

"I can't see what his mane has to do with it," she grumbled. She knew that some of the females believed that dark-maned males were stronger somehow, but her mother and aunt had raised her to pay no attention to that. The old fashioned gang could be quite vocal however...

She fell silent as hackles were raised and ears tilted back in response to the large male approaching. Jagazi hadn't met the ambassador and his presence made her nervous. Some of the lionesses seemed perfectly calm, but enough of them looked worried to make her on edge too. She didn't mind white-maned males, but she found herself minding very much if this particular one was here to take over the pride or something like that. The young female backed away a bit. When the stranger was introduced as the Cabanga she relaxed a tiny bit, and when there was talk of voting she couldn't stay silent and timid any longer.

"I vote both," she said, giving Nolaka a stubborn look, "Or Jasiri if I can only vote for one."

It didn't occur to her that voting for he own father might cause problems for her later. She was a bit too young to think of cubs yet, and since so many females were bashing the white-manes she was even more determined to defend the white-maned Inselelo.

---

Kokumo stayed silent as tension rose and both fur and feathers were ruffled. The presence of Andhaka seemed to further agitate the situation, but she was not going to make his presence stop her from adding her vote.

"Jasiri fathered a large litter of healthy cubs," Kokumo said, "Andhaka has none. Are we sure he's up for it? I'll still vote for Andhaka, for obvious reasons, but we should make him keep Jasiri around at least until we know he can give us cubs."

---

Buna recognized the Cabanga by his markings, and wasn't as hostile or frightened as some of the other females when he approached. She scowled at him, but she'd looked unhappy the entire meeting so the difference was hardly noticeable.

"If we're voting, I'll vote no red pelts," Buna said, and then felt the need to clarify, "Not of any color. And I don't think Luzisi should be able to stay as Inselele unless they've been strengthened by the roguelands first. It's just not right."

She still refused to sidle with any of the Inselele.

Andhaka raised an eyebrow at the loudmouth of a vulture, but otherwise paid its squawking no mind. It was friendlier than the welcome he got from Mhisani, at least.

"I apologize again for the interruption, Mhisani," he said, his voice level as he dipped his head politely. He was, as ever, civil even in the face of the dislike a few of the females seemed to have of him. He assumed it was equal parts for defeating Nguvu and for being short with the adolescent males...and, yes, he had been insensitive that one time, and apparently they were intent on seeing him pay for it. Regardless, he was as civil as ever, internalizing any annoyance and refusing to rise to confrontation when baited.

"I only came to have a closer look at...Machozi, I assume?" He glanced at the other male long enough to nod in acknowledgement. "I can see now that he belongs here, but from a distance I couldn't tell."

"If that is your preference, by all means, lie with whomever you wish." Andhaka shrugged, but his words to Mhisani were sincere, not dismissive.

The Inselelo's expression was unreadable as he took in the discussion. "I seem to have stumbled on a matter of import. I will go and wait for you to finish, if you would prefer I do so."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2015 7:18 pm

She waved her paw dismissively. "Calling them red-pelts feels too specific and defining, as if ALL of them had red pelts, when there's also red-pelted lions out of their pride. Desert lions feels more apt a description since they LIVE IN A DESERT. But, whatever." She eyed the vultures sourly, then turned her sour gaze on Jagazi. "You do realize that if Jasiri is the Umholi, you'll be without cubs if he doesn't let males in as inslele right away, right?" She flicked her tail. "I vote Andhaka."

Zola shifted uncomfortably. They were voting? Oh dear... She wasn't much for voting, or being put on the spot. She wasn't the type to lead, but follow. Where others went, she went behind them. She didn't make the finishing bite to kill the prey, instead she was in the thick of it, one of the lionesses holding the struggling zebra down. "I... I..." She chewed her lip. "I vote neither!" When she noticed the questioning look her mother gave her, she shrank down just a bit. "Too many seem biased against Jasiri over a silly matter, and others seem to just not like Andhaka for one reason or another... So why not just start from scratch?"

Ooooh, this was an interesting vote... Mhisani let out a sigh, then ushered her daughter over, grooming her ears. "We must all swallow things we don't like to survive... Be it scraps of food left by another predator because we're starving, or dirty water because we are thirsty and there is none... This is one of those situations... And while I don't like him, I vote for Andhaka." She let out a puff of air, ears folding back slightly. "I, for one, can't ignore that he DID defeat Nguvu..." Especially since she was the only one who cared to take a chance and have cubs with the Inslelo. In fact... She'd noticed that trend... Each Inslelo had only ONE litter. "That is, IF he can produce TWO litters... Because I've yet to see ANY Inslelo produce more than ONE."

"I've called red-pelts red-pelts my entire life, and I'm not going to stop calling them that now," Ukuthula countered, snorting. "But whatever we call them, I don't want one. I'm for Andhaka."

Nolaka continued to stare at Dania until she dropped to the ground and lay quiet, then turned her attention back to the matter at hand. "Give me another month, Kokumo, and I'll let you know," she said, raising her head proudly as she relaxed into a sit. Amusement quirked her lips at Mhisani's stipulation when she cast her vote. "In order for the Inselele to produce litters, they need willing lionesses, so it's no surprise that none of them have many, not when there have been Abaholi to choose from as well."

In her case, an Inselelo had been the only option, and she had chosen the one she thought most fit. "I have said already that Andhaka is the best choice, and I stand by it."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2015 7:41 pm

"No," she called out quickly at the Inselelo's remark on leaving for the lionesses to finish their business. "Stay, Andhaka. You may not have that large of a say in the matter, but you are concerned, as much as we all are." It was something many of those around her seemed to forget. This meeting was not just for the lionesses, but for cubs and those just growing large enough to hunt, even males too. It was a discussion, but it had turned into so much more now.

Ukwazi had not intended this to come to a vote or to even suggest it come down to that, but perhaps that was the single best way to determine a course of active if no one, not even Andhaka, would step up. Though she could not blame the striped male for not trying yet. Many lionesses would have simply dismissed his claims or challenged it, though it seemed many were also backing him with the assumption that Ukwazi's personal backing of Andhaka meant to take a vote. Sitting quietly with Ukushisa beside her, who was equally as quiet, which was odd for the red pelted lioness, Ukwazi listened as each lioness spoke, giving their final opinion on the matter. Some did not speak right away, for reasons she could only assume they wished to keep to themselves.

What was said was said though, there was no turning back now.

"What say you then, Andhaka?" The tan lioness asked with a quirk of her brow and a grin on her face as she looked to the Inselelo. "You seem to have enough backing from my pridesisters and I. Do you have the making to be an Umholi?"

[OOC Information]

Sorry for not leaving the vote window open longer (I actually had not intended there to be a vote, but that was a good move <3), but I'd like to move this along so I'm going to post early. c:

Andhaka bowed his head to those gathered. No smugness, no celebration, no grin or even a smile. To say that the decision pleased him would be an understatement, as he had been waiting for a month for the females to decide just such a thing, wary of claiming the title for himself or pressuring them into it, but now that it seemed to have been made, he knew better than to gloat. They could just as easily revoke their approval if his reaction displeased them.

He was glad that they had finally made up their minds...or at least that enough of them had made up their minds in his favor. He was genuinely surprised that Mhisani had ultimately supported him, even as she expressed her distaste for having to do so.

"I do," he answered confidently. "If that is your will, I would be honored. Is there anything you would have or ask of me in doing this?"

He spared a glance for Simosihle, awaiting her disapproval. Perhaps in time he would win the Umama over, but even he doubted it. Still, it was no reason not to try.

User ImageSo. They had made a decision. Or were on the verge of making one. The bird had little idea of how the lion's voting system operated. Thola had been hoping for something more exciting to happen, but then again, when it came to the decision itself...well, not every lioness gathered supported it. A least that was what it seemed. That would no doubt lead to some tensions and conflict, and that would be most entertaining indeed. How interesting it was that their males held the power, and yet the females were determining who the power was given to. What would happen when not all of the lioness supported who was receiving that power? Thola lived for things that were...of an interesting nature such as this. Even the few short weeks she'd been hanging around had proved to be the most fun she'd had in her entire life. Well, suffice to say she had a wonderful reason to stick around the pride now, more than just the chance for an extra scrap of meat. Thola would stay nearby and see how this all played out. And who knew. Maybe she would make the full commitment of working with one of their lions. It would tie her to the pride officially, but the vulture didn't think that would be such a bad thing, if events turned out to be entertaining.
What a wonderful investment this was turning out to be.

Nolaka's small outburst at her sting was expected, what came as a complete shock was Dania's reaction to the lioness who she suddenly perceived as a threat. The explosion of roars and bared teeth at her defense causing the Umama to frown with dismay. She could have certainly handled her own fight, if she had thought there was one. Thankfully, before things could get any further out of paw, and before she had the opportunity to raise her voice, Ukwazi snapped the confrontation into submission. Effectively subduing those involved in the immediate conflict. Though she wasn't certain how open the lioness would have been to the idea, Ukwazi was definitely Umama material in Simosihle's opinion.

Even if she wasn't thrilled by the tan female's choice for Umholi--the red devil who only now reached her notice. After giving Dania a quick, reprimanding glance--they would have to have a private conversation later--the Umama turned her immediate attention to Andhaka, though she refused to turn her body to face him fully as a purposeful show of her lack of respect for him.

How inappropriate of him to sit in on a gathering of lionesses Gakere and even Surtak would have never acted so inappropriately. Of course, Gakere and Surtak had both known Machozi and Simo had decided that the large grey male was the most likely reason for the striped Inselelo's sudden appearance.

She wasn't about to oblige him by satisfying his curiosity as to the reason for Machozi's presence in the gathering. Of course, it didn't really seem necessary as the conversation turned into a sudden outcry of votes.

Dark brown eyes widened with surprise, head twisting in every which direction in short, curt movements as each lioness professed her decision, many in favor of the red pelted male. She could hardly blame them, how could they make a well thought out choice if their options weren't clear? It seemed many only took what was clearly offered before them, most likely because it was the easiest solution to see. Andhaka was there. No other options were visibly present. Who wouldn't have thought him the answer to their problems if there was no one else present? His presence was a huge influence, manipulating even!

Feeling the fur bristle along her spine as Ukwazi was suddenly offering Andhaka the position of Umholi as if he had every right to it, the slate lioness stood abruptly.

Maybe it was because she couldn't face the reality of Gakere's demise that made her so reluctant to take a new Umholi--no matter who it was. She could feel her chest tightening, as if Andhaka's ruthless claws dug themselves into her heart and the tears flowed hot and quick to the edge of her eyes. I will NEVER support you as Umholi!

With an anguished roar Simosihle felt her breath short and quick as it raked against her ribs, her stance tense and volatile. She realized all too suddenly that she had made a rather ungainly scene with in the middle of their gathering and, embarrassed and ashamed at her lack of control, the Umama turned on her haunches and sprinted away.

I am Machozi. The pale Cabanga answered Andhaka calmly. Gakere had sent me to live with the Firekin as their Cabanga during his time as Umholi here, though as I understand it.. my brother has gone missing.

Though he tried to hold a conversation with the Inselelo Machozi could feel the tension building in his mother's best friend, watching her out of the corner of his eye as her expression filled with distress. As long as he'd known her, she had always been so well put together, always the voice of reason. Always calm and collected. How long could someone stay that way before they finally broke? Especially in the face of a truth they weren't yet ready to acknowledge?

Wincing at Simosihle's howl and her sudden, mortified retreat. Chozi frowned. Once again he found himself wishing his mother were here. Njalo had always had a calming effect on Simo--or at least gave her an immediate distraction from her own internal conflict. Now she seemed lost and overwhelmed by everything she had been pushing to the back of her mind.

Congratulations on being appointed Umholi, I hope you serve them well. If you'll excuse me.. Ducking his head in a polite nod to Andhaka, the giant excused himself in a hurry. Turning on his heel to follow in Simo's wake, granted at a slower clip, giving her time to exhaust the burst of emotion that had finally wrested itself from her perpetually collected composure.

(OOC: Sorry for the delay on this guys. I had it half typed up for a day or two but work is chewing my head off and I couldn't find the energy to finish it.)
