"Even your friends?" Oliver asked, but there was no judgement in his voice. He just sounded kind of sad. He couldn't imagine how lonely that must be, any strong bonds he had formed came with that anxiety surrounding the risks their job entailed. It was what drove him to get stronger, the strength of those feelings. He looked towards Chance again, this time holding his glance longer. "Why did you bring me here?"

Chance gave a half sort of shrug, but didn't answer the question; instead, he raised his glass to his lips and took a swallow. A part of him knew that there was something wrong with this picture; that the answer to Oliver's question should have been yes, but it wasn't, and that disconnect was not something so easily fixed.
"I like people here," he said finally, his tone still as mild as ever. "And there are people I'd probably be disappointed about if they were gone."
The answer was evasive at best. Chance rolled his neck sideways to smile at Oliver.
"No particular reason," he said lightly. "I just felt like it."

Oliver smiled, just a little bit, and looked down at his hands. Chance seemed very emotionless, in a milder, less obvious manner than someone like Ripley. This was the closest thing he had heard to an admission of 'feelings' on the other man's part. "Would you put yourself at risk, if it meant those people could be here for a little bit longer?" Evasive answers deserved more purposeful questions. Oliver didn't mind if Chance didn't have an answer, or didn't want to answer, it just felt like something the sun hunter might like to know himself. Much like whether Oliver wanted to live or if he was okay with dying. The boy looked at the cup, still in his hands. "I'm glad it's not pity, at least. Sometimes I look for distractions when I can't sleep at night..."

Chance probably would have been somewhat amused - and a little pleased - by the comparison to Ripley, considering that he found the other man to be one of those people he liked being around. As it was, he let out a little hum of thought at Oliver's question, brow furrowing as he considered his answer.
"Maybe," he said, but then shrugged. "Or maybe not. I can't really tell, because I haven't ever been in that situation."
Although technically he had already, with the Horseman incident, which made him a little more confused by the whole thing. Chance lapsed into silence for a moment as he contemplated this more seriously - but no specific answer came to mind.
It took him a few minutes to realize that Oliver had actually spoken, and this one made him smile a little.
"Nah," said Chance, nudging Oliver's side with his foot, because that was what he could reach. "I don't do pity. And you're not really pitiful, just a little confused."

Oliver let the noncommittal answer slide. He didn't really need to know the answer, but Chance did seem to think hard about it after the fact. In a way it was reassuring, knowing there was more going on in the hunter's mind than he let on with the mild, almost careless act. He squirmed away from the unexpected contact and shoved Chance's foot back, surprised himself to find out he was still ticklish when caught off guard. The playful gesture was met with a smile though. "I suppose I made for a good distraction at least. It all feels so stupid now, to be afraid of nightmares, but they felt so real when I woke up... Why are you up this late anyway?"

Chance finished the last of his second glass and then lifted the cup, tossing it in a clean arc over the desk and into the trash can on the other side. His hands fell back into his lap and he put one ankle over the other again.
"I don't sleep," said Chance airily, idly plucking at the bedspread. "Or at least, not until later, anyway. Not really all that exciting of a reason, sorry."

Oliver yawned, he could never stay up this late and still function the next day. He had pulled too many late night video game boss runs, he knew better even before being tired could get you killed. Chance must have been one of those magical people who could somehow function just fine on four or five hours of sleep. "Sometimes boring is fine..." Oliver stared into the cup still in his hands, thinking that he had enough excitement anyway. A little more boring would be a refreshing change. Then he smiled a little. "Thank you, for this."

"Boring is boring," said Chance lightly, but he sounded relatively amused anyway. "And there's nothing really to thank me for - but you're welcome, anyway, for whatever else it's worth."
He nudged Oliver with his foot again.
"Now. Are you gonna go back to sleep, or do I need to startle you into silence again?"

"Um, I-I should go back to bed," the kid stammered quickly, beginning to blush all over again as he was poked. Immediately he feared his immediate reply would be taken the wrong way, or that Chance would be offended. "N-not that I d-don't... I-it's not that i-it was a bad kiss or anything, I-I just, um..." Oliver covered his mouth, he had definitely said too much in his hasty rambling.

Chance watched him stumble around helplessly and tried very hard not to laugh. It was just too easy.
"Oliver," he said, waving a hand. "Oliver. Relax. I'm just kidding. I'm not gonna force anything on you that you don't want, don't worry. I'm not that kinda guy, seriously, so you don't have to feel uncomfortable around me."
Chance shook his head, a smile on his face. "You should go back to bed, and try not to worry so much."

Oliver didn't trust his tongue after it's recent misadventure, instead he nodded. That was always good advice. Go to bed, try not to worry. He scooted off Chance's bed and took a couple steps towards the door before he turned around again and smiled. "Thanks again, you really helped me out tonight. Even if you feel like it was nothing." Then he beat a hasty exit, with renewed hope for another couple hours of sleep.
