“I’ll be sure to pass it on that you two can start an ‘Zac is an Idiot’ club, but thank you for not punching me. To be fair though, probably would have chosen being popped one over being nicked with a knife. Though I suppose she’s right… this leaves a more permanent reminder the way she did it.” He let out a soft sigh.

“What range? Attractive smartass? Yeah I can see that… “

He glanced back to Otto and sighed again. “You look like ******** all…what can I do?”

"Cool. Club started." Zac could keep that mark to keep him from being an idiot. Otto wished that always worked.

"Wh--..huh? No.. just the smart a**.." Otto didn't want him thinking he thought himself attractive. Sure, he aimed to be, and he liked the way he looked, most days. "Nevermind." Find, attractive smart a**. Still seemed self-arrogant of himself to say. Nevermind that Zac just agreed he was attractive.

s**t. Easy to win over. Easy to please. Call him pretty and he was yours.

Zac's worry was met with a sheepish shrug. "I dunno." He wasn't sure he wanted to be helped. If he was a victim, he'd want to feel better. But he was the villain now. He deserved no such thing.

"It's fine."

“It’s not fine.” He countered. “It’s clearly not fine, not the least.”

He took a breath and let it out.

“Well if you really wanted to pop me one we could spar, might get your mind off things, I mean I’m injured…you might be able to keep up.”

He was trying to tease a bit to cheer Otto up, or at least stir up some other reaction than ‘down’, but he knew too well that didn’t always work.

“You could tell me a bit more about that… thing in the House. Sounded like you know it, if that’s not too…” he shuddered and didn’t try and hide it.

“Uncomfortable”

He didn't want to hit him. He didn't want to fight. The teasing was met with an unimpressed brow raise. Otto knew he outranked him, but it didn't mean he was stronger. Otto had a bit of a handicap.

He did, however, feel that discussing the Vetella would be a good distraction.

"Okay. We can talk about that thing. Let's sit somewhere."

Zac lead them outside to find somewhere with some fresher air and maybe fewer ears too. He took a seat and glanced up at Otto expectantly.

“So…you’ve run into it a few times? You must have done better than I did, I mean, you’re around.”

There was a begrudging note that he nearly hadn’t been, and a distracted rub at his neck, remembering. The chest was no less vivid but he was being on a selfish level glad his tattoos weren’t ******** to hell.

Otto sat across from Zac, slouching as he was want to do.

"Actually, I nearly died." He replied bluntly. "It beat me to a pulp, and then possessed my body. It made me stab myself..." He pointed to his sternum, "Right here. I spent a long while in the infirmary. Had a broken ankle too. Most of the scars on my body are because of that thing."

His arms, his face. Especially his chest. It'd gone at him with claws, and finished him with a jagged piece of crystal.

"I don't know what that thing is. Tenya ain't sure neither. Somethin' that can possess a living thing, though... It's hurt a lot of hunters in the past."

That news got a jaw dropped stare.
“…Possess.” He repeated sounding unnerved.

“…That, is puckeroo, like it’s not creepy enough without knowing it could do THAT.” He made a face of consternation at the idea.

“Shite.”

He repeated and rubbed at his own chest remembering his two encounters, curiously, he was feeling pretty damn lucky that it hadn’t done that to him.

“… Remiel, isn’t really… well she’s not offered any suggestions as to what it is other than ‘Demonic’ or ‘Legion’ and ‘someone who sauntered further down.”

He gave a soft laugh. “She says she didn’t saunter that far down… to give that last bit some context.”

“… s**t… how much can it do with someone it’s possessing if it can make you…”

"It has all of you. All you can do is think." It seemed Zac hadn't known of the severity of his situation after all.

"You got real damn lucky. It puts you on like a suit. Maybe it's some kinda ghost, in that way. It talks using your voice. Makes you walk where it wants. Grab what it wants. It becomes you. Just not you, you."

It had been one of Otto's scarier encounters. One he'd likely not forget for a long time.

"I was lucky. Someone found me just after it happened. If they hadn't, I'd have bled out."

He gave Zac a serious glare.

"You ever see it again, you port out right away. The second it looks like it wants to attack, you run. Ain't worth your life, y'hear me?"

Zac stared down at his feet at the glower, lips thin and eyes tired.
“… Sounds like a few things in my life.” He said almost too quiet.

Over sharing probably… did it matter right now? It just felt like a time where he could say it, actually say it, so he did.

“…Damn thing surprised me from behind, just…turned around and it was there. I know I didn’t do great but… s**t man.”

“I’ve pretty much promised to bring back up if I go back too… but, wouldn’t that just make it so like… she could do hunter pit fights?”

He shook his head frowning slightly.

“Glad you didn’t bleed out man.”

"That'd be a risk, yeah. Might wanna port them out with you if they do. See if we can pry that ********' parasite outta them in the infirmary." It was a worst case scenario plan. After all, it couldn't be too powerful, right? A few extra hunters should be fine.

"Thanks... me too." He supposed it was best to be alive. But back then? He wasn't so messed up. Not nearly as bad as he was now. Things made sense then. He knew himself, or thought he did. Clerise had been alive back then, too.

"Can't always have back up, though. I go out alone a lot. It's just the way it is. All I can really ask is that you try and be careful."

“…Yeah.”

The reply was not quick, but it came at last, even if it was with a slight roll of the shoulders to go with the bob of his head.

“…Well… you can call me if you go in alright? I may be… shitty back up but, it’s better than none right?” He glanced at Otto, an earnest look.

He rubbed a palm against his eyes and hmmed softly.

“…best thing about …agreeing to this whole bundle of s**t. Name it, name what you like best.”

"Right." He murmured.

Otto's gaze became distant. "What I like best..." He couldn't think of anything. He'd had good times. Bad times. An extreme to an extreme. Except, he wasn't always certain if he'd chosen his life properly. He was an upset 16 year old in a bad place, felt trapped. That's why he left. He wanted to go somewhere he was understood.

Had he grown? Had he found some semblance of happiness that he'd not trade for another chance?

"I don't know.." He admitted shamefully. "There's... things that are good. But, I dunno if there's somethin' I like best." He loved and hated the relationships he'd gotten. He'd been understood, he'd been judged. Hurt, and hurt others. This was what living meant, he supposed. But he wasn't sure he liked it. Power? It had it's merits in the field. Money? He rarely spent it. Everything he thought was supposed to make him happy, he'd acquired.

So why then? Why was he just not happy?

"Do you like anythin' you got outta this?"

“… so far?” he said carefully, sweeping a hand through his hair, he had an idle thought that he probably needed help turning parts blue again, but that was off topic.

“Christ.” He said and gave a soft breath of a laugh.

“I was going to say…that…. I didn’t HAVE to be a given thing.” He started and then stopped, shaking his head slowly.

“… But I guess, in a way I’ve just…. traded.” He shook his head.

“s**t… I guess, at least here I have time?” He shrugged.

“I have time to do stupid s**t like this, talk about monsters and it’s…not something I pass off as a bad dream or being over tired. I can admit…to some at least, that I like guys, and I like girls…and ********. I really didn’t give a s**t that Kiki painted my nails because it make her happy so…whatever you know?”

He crinkled his nose thoughtfully.

“…But I guess this place is just…concentrated ******** instead of semi diluted ********. At least with concentrated ********... I can feel like I might fit in, eh?”

Otto didn't know what Zac's life was like before Deus. Hell, he didn't know anyone's past. Only his own. He'd never cared to ask or find out. Not in depth. Zac's list was of curse wonderful. He had a bigger heart than himself. Still, he did put himself down some. Aloud, that was.

"I guess.." He murmured quietly.

"Thinking your way... I guess I don't hate things as strongly as I used to." He'd been an angry kid when he first joined. He hated everyone by default. He threw tantrums on the drop of a hat. He'd always felt edgy and upset with the world and everyone in it.

"Lotta people here. People I'd never have met on my own, had I stayed at home."

“Not a bad thing, I suppose this place would wear you down at the edges. True nuf about the people though.” He nodded thoughtfully.

“I’d probably have put you off as just another tourist if you showed up in New Zealand.” He admitted.
