"Now there's a meeting of minds," Jordan said, amused. "I suggest you supervise that one. The weapon golems range in size, as much as Halloween creatures do, naturally; I don't think I've seen one shorter than four, four and a half feet, though." He knocked Horace's fists aside, planted Ferros's barrel against the younger man' midsection and shoved him back. "Don't get too discouraged," he advised. "You're still new to your weapon bond and to fighting. You've been doing some pretty good damage." He grinned, friendly. "We did a lot of missing when I was straight out of the pod. Takes a little while. How's your shield?" Ferros's runes had lit a steady red; he was charged again. "We're not going to hit you with a damage charge if you're not at least at half." "Yeah, I think it'd be interesting to hear them speak. I respect Dr. Morris in a lot of ways. Though Dr. Jannisari says I do not need to be present." He laughed a little and rubbed the shaved side of his head. Regardless of what Jannisari wished, he knew he would likely have to be there. {that does not mean you benefit from the conversation. comprehension is not a given.} He started forward, then faltered, stopping as Jordsn spoke again. Hmm.
Horace grinned and spread his arms. "I'm good - hit me!" Rolling his shoulders, he bent his knees and brought his hands up near his face. He wasn't quite up for it, maybe. But perhaps Jordan didn't know that and curiosity won out. He wanted to see what Ferros could do and if it tore his shield, it tore hisshield. He wouldn't die. Well, he was about 93% sure of that - wards and what-not. His grin tilted a little as he waited.

"Dr. Morris has an interesting outlook on life. She's very intelligent." Jordan liked and respected Mimsy, though he remained slightly wary of her. He wasn't about to say anything bad about her, but he could provide a subtle, low-key warning.
He assessed Horace's expression and stance. He couldn't tell if the kid was lying or just nervous. But there are wards now, he reminded themselves, and Ferros, agitated with the heavy heat of a charge, was easy to convince. They lunged forward, planted one foot, and spun; Ferros's head burst into brilliant flame with a soft whump of displaced air, becoming a massive fireball with a core of metal, arcing straight toward Horace.
Partway through the motion, Jordan felt his foot slip, perhaps a patch of mud, perhaps grass tearing away from the dirt underneath. It threw his balance, and he had to yank Ferros back and take a step to keep from falling. The hammer swung wide, searing heat passing safely in front of Horace instead of slamming into him, and Jordan growled something that wasn't quite a curse. Embarrassing. Maybe he could convince the kid he'd pulled it on purpose.

"Interesting is a good word. Maybe a little too trusting of her superiors, but smart nonetheless. In fact, I-" Whatever he'd been about to say was lost as Ferros flamed up. Holy ******** s**t. Of all things, Horace wasn't sure he had expected Ferros to become some giant fireball. Well, he'd certainly asked for it and he kept his eyes wide open as it hurtled towards him. But, ah. It rolled past, singeing him slightly, maybe. Had Jordan missed?
Horace blinked, but only for a split second before he sprinted at Jordan. The other hunter seemed off balance, and he only had a few moments to take advantage of it. If Jordan's hair had been longer, his clothing more loose, Horace would have already snagged his hands in it and yanked. He was quickly discovering that he preferred using whatever weaknesses he could find. He wondered how much trouble he'd get in for sand in the eyes. But for now, he dove straight at Jordan - well, straight at Jordan's legs. Ferros would be a lot harder to swing if the man was on the ground. There was, of course, the chance that the giant hammer would clock him on the way down, if they went down, but it was worth the possible outcome.
And, if he managed to bring Jordan down, Horace would certainly allow himself a small cry of 'timberrrr'.

Jordan couldn't avoid the tackle, but as he fell, he turned sideways, let go of Ferros very deliberately. Without the effect of the bond compensating for his weight, Ferros dropped hard and fast as gravity took effect. Jordan took the fall on his side and rolled to twist loose from Horace's grip, coming up into a loose crouch.
He conferred briefly with Ferros, then held one hand up, palm out and empty. Ferros desummoned, returning to Jordan's hand and reforming as the ring totem. "We're pretty much done," Jordan said equably. "Our shield's got one or two hits left, depending. You did great."

Horace's head cracked hard into the ground as Jordan rolled with the tackle. He groaned, but gamely popped back up. Then, Jordan de-summoned. Slowly, he put his own hands down, Jannisari still pulsing. "Oh," Horace said, a note of surprise coloring his voice. "-I've never not gone until a shield popped - usually mine." (In fact, he goaded others to press forward, but Horace wasn't sure Jordan needed to know that.} He de-summoned Dr. Jannisari, feeling that strange, small jolt of electricity when she reformed as his earring. He wondered what happened if (and could that happen, even) a weapon got stuck between their two forms. Obviously, not something he wanted to find out personally. He rubbed his hands on his shorts. "Likewise, as far as shields go. Though, it that fireball had got me, I'd be gone." He grinned. It would've been a unique experience. "Maybe next time you can burn me up, Jordan. If you'll spar me again sometime. I know I've got a ways to go, but thanks." He held out his hand for a shake. It seemed the thing to do. Horace was a little more used to ended spars flat on his back in the dirt.

"Habit left over from before they placed the wards on the fields." Jordan got up, stretching. "Enough people got hurt misjudging their shields. I landed in the infirmary once myself when someone didn't stop soon enough." He tugged down the collar of his shirt to show Horace the top end of a deep scar, the mark of a slice that had started just over his collarbone and ran diagonally downward, disappearing under his shirt. "That one ends about here," he said, and indicated his right hip. "So I learned that it was wiser to call it before shield break. Safety over pride. It's good that it's been made safer to train, but I'm concerned that that lesson's getting lost with the wards in place." He shrugged. "On the other hand, it also means that a bad call on how much shield you have left won't put you out of commission for a few days or worse." He accepted the handshake, his grip firm. "Good spar. Let me know if you want to do it again sometime." A sudden, slightly wicked grin. "I won't be going easy on you next time."

Horace cracked his leck loudly. "Damn. That's a big-a** scar. I'm eternally grateful for the wards - let's me keep going." He was a little startled by Jordan's grin, but then laughed.
"Aw, dammit, you were holding back this whole time!" He shook his head "Guess I'm not that surprised. Show me what Ferros can really do next time, okay? I'm looking forward to it, even if you completely wipe the floor with me. Later!" (Maybe especially if Jordan did.) Horace waved and turned to jog back to the dorms. He had duty soon and needed a shower.

Jordan tucked his hands into his pockets, still grinning. "If I just wipe the floor with you," he pointed out, "neither of us learns much. But now I've got a better idea of what you can do. See you later, then." He headed in the direction of the dorms and cafeteria at a more leisurely pace, thinking over and analyzing the spar as he went.
