"God, Christ, your heal is so much better than mine." Except, even as he said it, Ever's expression was lighting up again: his blade slicing through several rats. For some reason that left him just faintly flushed, pleased. More focused, and more comfortable, shooting Horace only a brief look. He'd done some damage now, at least, and he'd let off his charge, which left Amory equally content in the back of his mind -- rumbly like a cat. It felt good enough to recharge him. More than any of the actual healing, the restoration of his shield, did. "We can take turns, if someone else thinks they can hit harder." HP: 34/50 [+19, -5, +5] [+50 percent of damage for 2 turns] DMG: 10 Charge: 0/3 Boss HP: 51

"Yeah, healing," he said to Melvin. "Do you know when you get your normal weapon back?" He grunted and dodged a nasty set of teeth. The rat hissed as if displeased with their words. He wondered if it understood them - if it were some hive mind transmitting their words back to... wherever. He shifted, fists striking out at the rats but they shifted, too, seemed to fall back as a wave in just the spot he'd aimed at. It was unnerving. He grunted in dissatisfaction. "The heal doesn't work half the time - Dr. Jannisari's picky about me earning it. And I'm not exactly great." As if on cue, a long tail snaked out from inside the writhing mass and snapped around his ankle, yanking him to the floor. He went down with a loud curse; teeth snapped at his legs, drawing lines of blood down his calves. With a few kicks, he was free and scrambling away. Blood trickled from where he'd bit his lip on impact and he wiped at it. Well, at least he knew he'd never make it as a Sun. HP: 24/40 DMG: REALLY CHG: 0/3 Boss HP: 51

"No idea. Until they think I deserve it." And who knew when that would be. He honestly didn't know if he deserved anything these days, but when it came to missions, he felt severely handicapped by the cuff. The only bright-side was that he wasn't spending time in the Arctic.
Moving, he tried to squeeze up against the wall to then protect Ever, but between the three of them and the rats, it was very hard to find space without getting in someone's way.

Another breath in, and again -- Ever hit hard enough with his sheath to send several rats flying down the corridor with pitiful little squeaks. This, it seemed, was working. Better than whatever they were doing before. Or, perhaps, it was just because he was actually hitting, now. "...how'd you lose your weapon...?" He grunted as he saw Melvin squeeze around to the side of Ever. "Flank! Ever in the middle - then hold positions." The catacomb tunnel was small, but three abreast could just barely work. It wasn't ideal, but it seemed like the best way to survive long enough to get anywhere at all. It wasn't going to be fast, it wasn't pretty or flashy, but if they formed a pincer of defense around Ever, it'd be better. "You're hitting hardest, Ever, keep it up." A rat lunged forward, teeth snapping and Horace knocked it away. When he wasn't focused on the enemy, he watched ever and Melvin. When he hit, Ever seemed to glow - a gradual sort of heal maybe? Horace stepped on a rat's tail with a curse. He keep one ear out, curious to hear Melvin's answer. HP: 24/40 DMG: n/a -> def 6 on ever CHG: 1/3 Boss HP: 42

He hesitated, not bothering to look at either of them as he took the other side of Ever to further their defense. He was, as Horace pointed out, the hardest hitter, and it wasn't getting them anywhere but exhausting their group to all fight. If they were all Suns, that tactic might work, but as they were (and as he was), this was the better option for them.
"I....shoot Rep..." Though trying to hurt anyone in Deus wasn't peculiar or even worth a glance on most days. "...while in the Infirmary." He moved to slash at another side of advancing rats that morphed their way closer.

It was strange for Ever to feel quite this competent and, combined with the rush of his charge, it definitely brightened up his expression -- enough so that Melvin's comment made him grin, suddenly and sharply, shooting him a brief look over one shoulder. "Is that against the rules? Shooting Rep, I mean." Just a hint of something teasing behind it, easily so, more himself -- as he swung his blade through the mess of rats and, with the help of the two hunters behind him, managed to dodge incoming bites. HP: 40/50 [+5] [+50 percent of damage] DMG: 10 Charge: 0/3 Boss HP: 32

"I imagine," Horace said, shoving away a rat that clicked its teeth too closely to Ever. "-that the 'infirmary' bit is against the rules. Just a guess, though." Whatever the cause, he couldn't blame Melvin, not really. Horace only listened with half an ear, looking instead to the teeming mass of rats. It seemed smaller than before. Jannisari hissed that he was correct. It was slow, but this could work. "Melvin, I've mostly got Ever's back if you wanna take a swing." "Yeah. Shooting and trying to kill you fellow hunter seems just fine. Doing that while in the hospital wing, not so much." He moved forward, taking Horace's suggestion. He felt winded and knew he didn't have long before he would be leaning against a wall.
"But at least he got a cuff too, and I didn't get sent to the other end of the world, though with how this island is, that might be a nice vacation." He tended to like the cold and it would have been far away from everyone. However, as of recently, he wanted to be on the island more and more whenever Jan called him.
Stepping forward, he slashed at the pile, seeing them seem to get smaller. "I think this thing isn't holding up." He said looking back at them in hopes he wasn't just imagining this. That gave the rats enough time to bite his pant legs and tear the skin above his ankles.
Wincing, eh stepped back.

His success must have gotten to his head, at least a little: because this time, as Ever swung, it wished air, the creature skidding out of the way. Whatever he'd been about to reply to Melvin was lost, turning to a sharp curse, instead. HP: 37/50 DMG: 0 Charge: 0/3 Boss HP: 24

"Steady, Ever, we almost have this." Or, at least he hoped so. Horace eyed the rat-mass critically and shuddered, stepping on yet another tail. It felt like he'd be hearing shrill rat screams echoing in his ears for days. {switchhh.} Horace did not have to ask to know what Dr. Jannisari was speaking of. It was a rare courtesy, her word - clear in a sea of dry speech about blood and the plague. {roi de rats. rattus rattusss - originally. carriersss of both bubonic and justinianic plagues. yersenia pestisss. typhussss, toxoplasssmosis.} Horace had become used to the type of things she spoke of. But this word referred to Melvin - the hunter was running low on stamina. His eyes flicked between the two life hunters. "Go for it; I've got your back." He shifted his body to take the brunt of any attack. HP: 24/40 DMG: n/a -> 6 def on CHG: 3/3 Boss HP: 24

He hated rats. He hated being attacked, but as he continued, he wasn't even sure they were making progress. Seeing so many rats in a pile for so long made his eyes cross, but he knew they had to be doing something because the rats just seemed more and more pissed.
With Horace by his side, he stepped around and slashed at the group, sending a few curling into the dark shadows. He felt a bit out of breath at this point and stepped back, taking a breath.

At this point, it wasn't a rat king anymore -- even calling it a rat prince was being generous. It was a rat duke, at the very most, a handful of mangy creatures held together at the tail. It was less intimidating,for sure, as Ever swept through it, but the beasts still had a nasty bite when they ducked through his defenses. "If you want to hit it, Horace, I'd say this is the time." HP: 29/50 DMG: 7 Charge: 1/3 Boss HP: 8

"If you say so." The sudden suggest from Ever was completed with a series of swings that barely connected. Still, the rat piled dwindled, although not before one of them sank ugly teeth into his wrist. HP: 16/40 DMG: 3 CHG: 3/3 Boss HP: 5

Melvin had one swipe left in him, and with so few rats left, he felt he could take care of the job. What he instead did was swipe and miss the group entirely and wound up getting a hard bite to his wrist that caused him to step back and hold it.
"It's all yours. I can't hit the broadside of a barn right now." Worn down, he let the others handle it.
