"I didn't think I was anything." He shrugged, absently, and then slowly eased one cigarette out of the pack -- as if he thought that, by doing so, she wouldn't notice the action and wouldn't raise objections. Maybe Ever could distract her while he fished for his lighter, too. "I'd never thought about it all, until about then. My upbringing wasn't exactly friendly to the idea." And he raised both eyebrows as he said it, meaningfully. Hopefully, she'd get it.

"Ah." She got it. That also answered why he was so surprised. "It is what it is." She mused. "You're here now." Where no one cared, and it was, in fact, the norm around here. "You also didn't answer my question." What brought him here. She also added, "And you can stop acting like a child trying to sneak a cookie out of the jar. I don't care."

Ever blinked at her, surprised maybe -- and then laughed. It didn't take him long at all to kindle the end of the cigarette and get it going, to draw a very heavy dose of smoke into his lungs. Being trapped down here, with no cigarettes at all in his pack, would have been a nightmare. As it was, it wasn't that bad. "I answered you. I mean, as much as I can. Earlier. I'm here because where else would I be? I wouldn't be at Yale, for sure."

No, no, that wasn't a good answer. Claude opened her mouth to tell him so, but as soon as her lips parted, nothing came out. Hrm. When did she get so invested in digging into people's past? Why did she want to know? It'd been easier to not ask, not talk, and to a degree, not care. Ever since she came here though, things had slowly been changing. She mulled over this for a moment, closing her mouth, before she let it go, for now. "I wouldn't say that." Claude murmured. "You could have blown your way there."

If it was meant to offend, it missed its mark: made him blink and then laugh, genuinely, a laugh that turned into a cough as he drew too much smoke into his lungs. He had to struggle to catch his breath again, dropping his feet to the ground and leaning in over his knees, a hand against his chest. Still surprised by that, maybe. "I probably could have. Make use of one of my greatest talents."

Claude had hit her mark. It was a jest, and one she hadn't expected to get so much laughter from. Another pleasant surprise. She also mused that they seemed to have made some progress from their first meeting in the library. She turned to face him now, and took to leaning against the glass, her arms crossed. "Don't die. I don't want that on my record."

He shook his head, still coughing -- and, even as he did, almost absently offered a cigarette to Claude, eyebrows raised. As if his moment of misery was somehow a compelling argument to take up a highly addictive [but at least not lethal, for them] habit. Ever should have brought a glass of water. "I wish that worked here. Have you seen Life's division leader?"

Claude raised a hand from the crook of her arm to decline the offer. "I haven't." She answered. "I've heard all about him though." She rested her hand back on her arm. "It's baffling that leads can get away with that." She supposed that was one good thing about having a giant Wee-a-boo as her lead. He wasn't known for using his trainees as stepping stones.

It wasn't the reaction he'd expected, really -- Ever clearing his throat again and trying to drive away the last of the raspy, uncomfortable scratchiness. Of course, he almost immediately went for another pull on the cigarette. Just more careful this time, slow, thinking. "I was referring more to how hot he is -- I'm not really surprised about people getting away with anything, not on an island in, what, the bermuda triangle, outside of any other system of government?" He shook his head, looking around for something he could tap off into, and opted for the floor. It wasn't exactly clean anyway. "Who's going to police anyone else? I'm surprised it's not worse."

Ever spoke, and Claude looked genuinely surprised. Her eyes widened, and she stared at him for a moment before she let out a throaty chuckle, shaking her head lightly. "I missed that track." She sighed, smirking lightly as she rubbed the bridge of her nose briefly. "You're right." About the policing part, and she fell silent for a moment. "Whether it worked or not..., or regardless of how hot he is, I highly doubt you'd want to blow him anyways. One way ticket to the dissection lab for experimentation." Or so she heard. She also heard that apparently the Doctor looked like some older version of her brother, and that was a visual she could gladly do without.

"Maybe I'm into that." It was an easy sort of reply, gesturing somewhat indifferently with his cigarette: halfway to a shrug. It wasn't, apparently, high on Ever's list of concerns. Or maybe he was just bullshitting her, bringing the cigarette back to his mouth, eyes a tad distant. "...all of Life labs is like that anyway. I'd advise against a transfer; I'm comparatively pretty sane and well-adapted."

"That's contradictory." Claude commented. "You can't tell me you're pretty sane and yet maybe into getting dissected and experimented on." As for the transfer advice, it was noted. She still wasn't sure Sun was the right place for her, with all her missing after all, but she wasn't sure where else she'd be. "There's more to that division than the labs though." She pointed out. There were other options. "The infirmary, and I know because that's where my brother is."

"Uh huh, that's where my --" And then a pause, due to the problems of labels. Ever licked his lips, turning the cigarette to consider the end, as if doing so would make it less obvious that he was stumbling over the word. "Zeke does shifts, anyway, I don't know if that's really where he is." And he drew smoke into his lungs, shrugging, eyes flicking back up to Claude's face. "Anyway, I only said I was comparatively sane."

"Boyfriend?" Claude offered, nothing in her tone other than the intention to offer up a word at the pause, which had been rather obvious. In addition to the shift in the sentence. "I'll agree to that." Comparatively sane.

Ever made a sound, dismissive maybe, definitely not agreeing, as he finished the cigarette and snuffed it out against the side of his chair. He could have argued with the word, but generally, in his experience, that just made people go all sly and smirky, like they knew something he didn't. No thank you. Instead he raised his eyebrows as he looked up at her. "Why'd you leave Yale?"
