Horace let out a hoarse shout as fire, America's fire engulfed him., Searing hot, it burned deep into his bones and... faded. He felt better. A lot better. Gasping, he turned, just in time to see Jan leap at America and get knocked back. Everything was wrong. He scrambled towards Jan, feeling some shadow slam into him as he went. "Thanks, 'Merica! You doing ok?" he called out as he scooted to a stop near Jan. "Jan... Jan, are you ok?" Even as he spoke, he kept his eyes moving, watching the shadows in the fog, ready to strike. Maybe the fumes had gotten to him too much. Hp: 23 Dmg: oh come ON Charge: 2/3 Boss Hp: 68

"Right as rain, hun!" Fixed on a familiar skeletal figure, she hadn't even noticed Lawrence's attempted attack. In the fog, she hear its laugh, its mad promises and she grinned with unrestrained violence.
As fist, chain, and bladed wings met the mass it collapsed into several bodies and none of them the one she'd hoped for. Kicking the remains, her head whipped around, seeking another target.

Lawr pulled himself up onto his claws as soon as he untangled himself from where he'd fallen. Something about the fight and about the strange dizzying effects of the creature they fought had allowed him to slide off into some other mental place, a place he did not typically find himself around others. There was an intent sort of focus which overwhelmed everything else, the motivation to feed Butch and to eradicate the flawed logic he found all around him disproportionately relevant.
It took all of his effort to feign normalcy enough to nod to Horace. "Yes. Yeah.. Yeah pardner, I'm fine. I better help her, or she won't be fine for long." It had been so close. So close. A horrible accident.
He stood, leaning his hand on Horace's shoulder to steady himself, the long dangerous talons splayed across him gently. He paused for a second, the most fleeting moment and trailed the blade on his index finger fondly along the curve of the other man's throat, a doting sort of smile on his face.
"Do stay safe." he said.
And then with a whirl he was off, stalking in the direction of the destruction America was wreaking, the mask dropped again in favour of absolute concentration.
"Are you sure you can handle this?" he said to America, or what he hoped was America, once again leaping forward to seize one of the figures like a creature possessed, throwing it discarded like a doll into its fellows, left holding a single dry and greyed humerus which he crunched into splintered shards.

Jan's voice shifted, stuttered back into the patterns he was familiar with and has he been cursing in Swedish? But it was okay, because those were the same glacier-pale eyes, and when he leaned on Horace, it was with the same weight. A small part of him was even pleased that they both had similar weapons, in a way. Jannisari did not like the comparison. Horace shivered at the feel of Jan's blade against his throat, eyes flickering closed. "Yeah," he breathed out. "-you too." And then Jan was gone, back to her, always to her side.
Horace was putting off joining them as much as possible. The figures in the mist swirled and spat around him. He knew he was weak, he knew he wasn't good enough for this; he didn't need monsters to lick those truths across his skin like knives. "No one," he whispered fiercely to the fog. "-will ever be as disappointed in me as I already am." A shadow (this one looked like September, but everything that came out of her grinning mouth was twisted - a barrage of old promises that were never kept) this shadow slid sharp claws up his arm, splitting his sleeve before he could knock her away. The brown eyes were almost the same, he thought.

This time Lawrence leapt off in his own direction to slash at the oncoming creatures, deliberately leaving America open to attack, her arrogance was boundless it seemed and to this day he felt the need to establish how very mortal she was and to remind her that that mortality was her most appealing feature.
As he worked, he kept the creatures back from Horace, panting now with the effort of prolonged combat. He was not half as fit as America and the main thing even keeping him moving was the sheer willpower he exerted over his own body.

{so weak. you, and they, horace. you do not have to be strong, just stronger than your enemies.} Her voice blew across him like the hot kiss of a desert wind. A monster loomed in close out of nowhere breathing out a gas that burned raw the lining of Horace's throat and nose. He felt blood tickle onto his lips. He slashed the figure across its face - it looked like Jan, but Jan never smiled like that. The real Jan's face was set in concentration and he flowed across the field like some ghost. He wasn't defending America, but it didn't matter.

Without Lawrence as a grounding focus, America shifted to her own heartbeat, her own breathing, those most reliable of anchors. Everything else faded back until it was just her and whatever she attacked.

{you need me,} {Yes, Doctor.} {of course.}
Jannisari glowed almost violently, the energy rushing off of her in a huge spark. Like lightning, it crashed down onto Horace, flashing a bright halo around his body before fading. He gasped, feeling superheated air slip past his lips. And then he turned his back on America and Jan and tried to lead some of the creatures away from them.

As America cleared the area, some of the tension seemed to go out of the man's posture. Not today, not here where she was still so very dangerous, not in front of Horace.
Sometimes things simply did not work out according to plan, but he was nothing, nothing at all if not patient.
The last remaining straggler instead bore the brunt of all his pent up restlessness, the last figure, with her face, with her curves, her and yet not her at all.
He leapt forward, even despite his exhaustion and plunged both claws into where the things chest should be, slamming them through so hard he sunk them several inches into the concrete. Not turning around, he pulled them back out, eyeing the thrumming, glowing runes thoughtfully.
"Well done Horace, you gave it a damn good shot. " he said. "And you missy, though maybe less of that there attitude next time hmm?"

Horace was kind of disappointed he did not get to hit the enemy again, after he'd healed up. But, he decided quickly, it was much better than the possibility of death.
He waved off Jan's words, not quite looking the man in the eye. "No, you guys made a surprisingly good duo." Excepting that one odd leap, Jan had protected America with a sort of fierce determination. The opposite of love wasn't hate, after all, but a disinterest that neither of them felt for the other. Now that it appeared as though they weren't in mortal danger, all of those whispered insecurities echoed around hollowly in his head. He scrubbed his hands briefly over his face. Horace still felt woozy, as though he couldn't get a proper breath.
"Sorry you guys had to pull me along." He toed one body before leaning down to snap a picture of what was left of its face. "What's next?' The sooner they got home, the sooner Horace could go sit somewhere quiet and think.

"Everyone's gotta start somewhere, honey. You did well enough," America stated almost absently as she pulled down her scarf and surveyed the area. "I think we can call it a day. These sorts of places flare up every few weeks. You beat whatever flavor monster's made it their home, but they come back time and again." Lawrence's criticism of her attitude was simply igored, "Thanks for running defense."
Pulling out her pendant she gave the others an expectant look, clearly intending to go last.

Lawr made his way to Horace's side to look him over and make sure that he was all right. "You have to learn somewhere." he said. "Might as well be here." He eyed America. "And no. We don't. She has her lackeys and I am not one of them. You were in danger pardner, I just did what I could."
He found himself wanting to just wander the area himself, time away from the island and its enforced control. Part of him even entertained making it to civilization, stealing a credit card and getting out of there. But even he knew how stupid and fatal that would be.
Still, he made no move to leave. "Aren't you going to lecture Horace on how to use his pendant properly?"
