Arrival

For some reason, a languid but pleased look crept over Jack's face, making him remarkably catlike. He pulled his sunglasses back down and got up from his tent, dropping the book over his sleeping bag.

It took a moment for Wren to understand the nickname was directed at her, and Chel was given an approving smile as they approached. "Lovely, but Wren will do. No need to choose, we'll both be going," she informed the Sun with a little wave of her device. "I'll let you guys give them a few whacks before I try this baby out. If it all goes right--well, of course it will, I've been studying Fear containment for months now--"

"I thought I was the sexy science babe," Jack complained as Wren launched into a small rant, though he was still smiling slightly.

Arrival

"The world has room for more than one sexy science babe," Chel refuted whilst rolling her eyes. Her fellow squadmates gave her owlish looks of confusion. "I know him from before. He's my friend. He's also an a*****e, so don't try and befriend him. He probably eats children or some s**t too."

With her wonderful introduction of Jack set, she gave a nod to Jordan and said, "Aight peace out cap'n."

Feeling rather awkwardly in charge, Chel gestured to Emil and said, "You wanna scout?" Being as flighty as he was, Chel knew he preferred to scout alone- it made him feel useful without having to be sociable. Emil nodded nervously, and he dashed ahead. A few moments later, Chel began their lovely group hike at a leisurely pace, flipping her daggers nervously in her hands. She still felt naked without Tenebrae.

The group proceeded with small talk, but inevitably Chel had to ask. "So ya really couldn't stand bein' without me for two whole weeks?" There was a sharkish grin on her face, made only that much more wild with her ghost blood paint. "You meet the others yet or you hole yourself up in your tent the whole time?"

Arrival

The fact that he deliberately dropped his smile and returned to his resting b***h face probably didn't help said introductions. Some s**t indeed. (Just not children.)

From the side she could see his eyes roll. "Name, rank, and division are all I need to know," he replied as Wren started asking more about the kinds of ghosts they'd seen. He kept to the side of the party that skirted the mountain wall, finding it easier to allay his anxiety in a group: the noise and presence distracted him somewhat. The area wasn't extremely mountainous--that was more to the west of them still--but any height that took him more than three feet from solid ground was enough to trigger him.

"So is this how you've been spending the last two weeks? Getting ghost s**t on you?" Jack reached out to smear a little off her face with one finger.

Arrival

"It's blood," Chel informed him, wiggling her fingers in a "ooh spooky" sort of fashion. When his fingers approached her face, she tried to take a step back to dodge him and ended up cracking through one of the wooden floorboards. The group stuttered for a second as she wiggled her foot free. "Hate when that happens, damn."

She found it odd to walk beside Jack without looping her arm around his. Even odder to be in a group of people. "Look, you shitty lifers can look down all you want, but it's been ********' hard work. I took down a drought demon ghost b***h," she remarked proudly, crossing her arms and wiggling her dagger at him.

"Yeah and you fell off the boards doing it!" Aly chirped.

"Man shut up, you weren't even there."

"We had to bandage her from head to toe- she looked like a mummy!" Aly almost seemed envious.

"Anyways, the answer is yeah. This is what I been doin'." She looked at Jack, curious of his reaction. "What about you?"

Arrival

It was hard to miss the knee-jerk reaction Jack had when the the plank gave way: he stiffened and immediately stepped away from her, almost pressing himself to the wall. <********>

"Jordan was telling us about that!" Wren chimed in, having paused with the group until Chel had freed herself. "Technically speaking, it couldn't have been a demon and a ghost, of course, but damn that I couldn't have been there! Demons are fascinating as a whole, especially those born from ancient cultures whose traditions we might see as odd now--"

Jack counted himself lucky that the Lifer had been in a foul mood that morning. Ten minutes of natter, while fun in its own way when discussing things like this, would have probably driven him up the wall before the mission properly started.

Breathing deeply through his nose, he righted himself and shoved his hands in his pockets. "Important people stuff," he replied stiffly, his gaze continually darting down at their feet as they walked. He only relaxed a little bit when they crossed the rest of the wooden nightmare and hit actual mountain trail again--only to see that there were still more of those god damn bridges to go up ahead. Whatever reaction he had to Chel's battle with the demon was stifled by a growing mix of grouchy, reluctant duty.

Arrival

Chel was a bit tinged by Wren's remark. "It was the ghost of a demon." But Aly and Jerome both seemed to be entertaining her, so Chel let it be.

Jack's response was far more interesting anyways. She noted the panic, followed by dark and brooding, so she gave his side a myriad of pokes. "Like what?"

Arrival

He took a few moments to reply as he calmed himself down. "Funnily enough, also ghost s**t," Jack said, shoving her hand away with his arm. "Haunted House ghost s**t." His answers were short half because of the instinctive need to cultivate an air of the mysterious (however lame it actually was), half because the trek's prospects of more ******** bridges was not appealing.

"You said the ghost of a demon," he prompted. "Like a memory?"

Arrival

Chel casually put her hands behind her head and closed her eyes wistfully as they walked. "Work, work, work Jackles. You miss me dearly for two weeks and I don't even get a 'how are you?' Cuts real deep." She opened one eye and peeked at him, sarcastic smile on her face.

The planked section ended and they were back on concrete ground. "It was a demon that died and came back as a ghost. They do that sometimes. I met a ghost dragon once. Cool ******** sound of trickling water began pervading the air and Chel said, "It's just up ahead-"

An Army

The waterfall itself was gorgeous- one long continuous stream of water that poured down into a small pool below. Eddies swirled around in the murky water, and rocks littered both sides of the miniature oasis.

Unfortunately the view was ruined by a hundred or so ambling bodies. Pale, ghostly figures that walked the edges, bumping into each other and occasionally breaking in to fights. Sometimes one would reach out, as though palming for a beam of light, and then drop to the ground in a huddle of fear. Altogether entirely bizarre.

It wasn't quiet though, as Emil was running around between the rocks throwing runic daggers down on the ground, setting up an odd sort of pathway that cut through the center of the milling ghosts.

"Alright pigtails hit up the left tree- that one with the fronds over there," Chel said casually, but oddly in charge. "Serah take the other side." It took her a moment, but she eventually spotted what she wanted on the right bank. "See that weird boulder? That one yeah." Both girls nodded and began walking towards either side, planning how to get the best shots in. "Jerome you wanna help Emil with the daggers?"

Then all at once the plan seemed to fall into place. More childishly, Chel called, "Keep count 'cause I'm getting one of those ******** chairs!" There was an easy smile on Chel's face that hadn't been on it for some time. "That goes for you fresh meats too," she told Jack and Wren. "Lowest kills has to sit on the ground. Guess that means lowest three. Now it's a real challenge."

A shot fired from the tree and Chel's head snapped. "Cheating!"

And then she ran off to join the fray. Because like hell she was getting the ground.

An Army

Chel giving orders? People listening to those orders? There were more anomalies than a distortion portal and aimless ghosts going on around here.

Wren looked positively delighted as she summoned her bladed staff and dove into battle. Jack stayed near the back of the group, observing the ghost's strange behavior. "Sit on the ground?" Jack repeated with some confusion, though he would have to wait for an explanation. A gang of ghosts lurched towards him, and with a swing they were cut down. High numbers, low resistance, good.

Midway through slicing off a ghost's head, Chel explained, "Pigtails bought camping chairs, but there ain't enough for all of us." She grinned at Jack and said, "So imagine eatin' dinner on the ground while we're all sittin' on beautiful a** thrones."

A blunt shot hit her in the back of the neck and Chel turned to face Serah. "Cheating."

Jack shrugged with one arm and stabbed through a ghost with the other, wincing as others clawed at him. "Thrones, uh-huh." If he ended up being forced on the ground, the tents were a viable spot to eat. Therefore he didn't see the point besides this being a pissing contest, one that he actually didn't care about for once. Although coming out with more kills than Chel would still lift his spirits.

He turned to clear out another group, but Wren was faster. Her weapon skewered through a line of ghosts, her eyes fixed ahead and a satisfied grin on her lips. "Pick up the slack, trainees! Or are the Suns always this slow?" she taunted.

An Army

Chel immediately fell into Wren's goading and slashed her way across the battle field to ensure her own victory. "I ain't no trainee, b***h," she called out, throwing one of her daggers into the ground to use it's barrier effect, vaporizing a whole set of ghosts.

She then tugged the dagger out of the ground and spun in an arcing kick, landing two more kills in one attack. "How many you losers at?"

"Six!" called Emil sheepishly, who sheepishly grinned as he knocked Jerome ever so slightly off his angle, sabotaging the way Jerome attacked. Emil was certainly the most interesting to Chel- she never saw the exact moment he messed with anyone, but she just had a feeling he was the one doing it.

Blue blood continued to spray, speckling her black clothing with the substance. "You gotta do better than that, glasses!"
