Lucayr had watched the hatchings up to now with a bewilderment that he chose not to show on his face. These hatchlings seemed not to care a whit about seeking out their bondmates -- something he thought was supposed to be an absolute imperative. How long did they really have to Impress before going between? There had to be something in the air on this strange, foggy eve.

When the brown dragonet burst out of its egg, the harper unconcsciously held his breath. Could that be the one? A look at those angry red-orange eyes, though, and any desire to Impress the little bugger flew out the window. Lucayr tensed to move out of the way, or move someone else out of the way, if necessary. He was glad there were several older male Candidates besides himself, who could hopefully help to keep down the number of potential fatal injuries this night. If the rest of the clutch was as ill-natured as those who had already hatched, they were going to need all the help they could get.

The blue that first hatched was smaller than she'd expected. Oh she'd known they were little and she'd even seen the eggs and touched the things but it was still strange to see a dragon so tiny and so awkward. She didn't have long to stare at the blue however, soon enough there was a rather more action packed show on the sands. Vee winced as the greens tore into one another and turned to Vosin. "Shards, does this happen often?" she asked the more experienced candidate in a hissed whisper. Shards! The first one - the one from the Charging Egg - was bigger and obviously stronger than the Shrieking green but Shrieking was faster. If this was a pit match or a duel she wouldn't know where to place her marks.

And then, naturally, things got even more interesting. It was the large red egg that was cracking now and... and that dragon didn't look happy. Shards though he was gorgeous, big and strong and screaming. Yep, she wouldn't mind a beast like that at her side in the least. "I'd put some money on him tearing into some of them... or some of us," Vee muttered to the girls around her in general, shifting her weight and keeping her eyes trained carefully on the magnificent brute.

Hatchling-on-hatchling fights were never good, but hatchlings who looked at the candidates like they wanted to rip them open and gnaw on their bones? Those were very, very bad. People were about to get hurt, if not killed. He glanced at the Queen, but she looked indifferent to the matter. Shards.

Maldryk looked around, noting who was beside him, and asked grimly, "Ready for this one?"

With a low growl and his eyes flashing the Keep Out brown began to stalk towards the male candidates, his head low and his tail lashing. As he drew nearer his growl rose to a crescendo of a snarl and he bared his fangs. Not so keen to lay their hands on him now, were they?

As the brown prowled and the pair of greens continued their fight - now tumbling over and snapping at one another near the larger cluster of eggs - the Seeking Egg began to shudder and twitch, its movements just about visible to a keen eye. The Suspicious Egg was moving too, wriggling and twitching until it fell over, knocking the Welcoming Egg and the Dancing Egg over as it toppled. The Dancing egg reacted to this not at all - it simply rolled away a short distance - but when the Welcoming Egg stopped rolling it too started to shift and wriggle.

The Guiding blue remained where he was, watching his siblings calmly.

Lucayr glanced over at the question and the corner of his mouth drew upward when he saw the strong build of the Candidate who had spoken. He was the smith apprentice -- Maldryk? -- and definitely one that Lucayr would like to have nearby in case of hatchling savagery. "I'm hoping I don't have to be," he replied, "but if it comes, let's try to keep it off the younger lads."

Vesresh

Ready for this one?

Vesresh peeked out from behind the older boy.

“N-no” he whispered. He was very much not ready. Soon, though, he could no longer hide from the dragon's loud growls – it was coming, and it was coming for them, the boys.

Vesresh knew that dragons didn't hurt people: whers did. But, though this was his first hatching, he knew that hatchings were the exception. People died at them sometimes.

His sisters could die.

He could die.

Ohshards oh shards... he whimpered mentally, holding his shaking body tightly...

Jikkiri

Jikkiri's good mood wavered a little as the clearly angry dragon approached their group, growling and snarling. Goodness, did he need to be so angry? Jikki didn't see why: it was a perfectly lovely night out, and it was the dragon's birthday..

Jamarin

“Jikki, do me a favor...” murmured Jamarin. He gently pushed his twin behind him. “Stay behind me, would ya?”

He watched the brown come closer, otherwise not flinching at it's obviously vicious intent.

Shaff you he thought at it, You can growl and snap all you want he bared his unimpressive human teeth, But if you bite me, I'll bite back.

Not literally, of course, but if the hatchling decided it wanted to take a bite out of him, Jamarin wasn't going to take that sitting down.

Vesin smiled as Vos was right behind her and once they were still on the sands, she looped her arm through her twin's. There was so much action. From the mottled blue hatching and watching to the two greens having it out. It made her worried. Even more so when the keep out egg hatched. She felt her heart beat faster as it stood there staring at them. Thankfully, it headed towards the boys. But that was probably even worse. Poor Esre's first hatching is off to a pretty terrifying start. At least, she thought, he was standing behind some of the more experienced and older candidates. She still worried for him, though, and thought about going over and pulling him to the girls side. But she knew that would not be looked upon kindly. She frowned as her internal thoughts were interrupted by a girl speaking to Vos. Ves decided to let her sister answer the first question since she wasn't sure if this girl (Vee) was a friend of Vos' or not. As to the second part...she peaked around her twin. "It's looking like that kind of hatching...just be ready to move to protect yourself or get someone off the sands." While she hoped it wouldn't come to that, Ves knew it was the reality behind hatchings. Her eyes kept flashing between the now rocking eggs, the hatched dragons, and Esre. Her hands were tingling and she kept clutching her hand to keep feeling in it as she waited nervously.

"Not much arguing with a pissy hatchling," he responded to Lucayr. "If it wants someone, it'll get 'em sooner or later." Granted, they could buy the younger ones a little time if it had to go through the older boys first, but either way, there was going to be blood. Probably a lot of it. While far from preoccuppied with a desire to be a hero, neither was he the type to turn and run to leave others to take the beating. And he did have a weakness for a good fight.

Maldryk sighed looked back at Vesresh and the nearby girls where the groups met. "Keep back, don't make any sudden movements if you can help it."

Sharding angry, unbonded dragons. This was going to be his last Hatching, sure, but he didn't want it to be his last night.

Malta and Poecileth

thought Poecileth gravely, scrutinizing the brown as he made his displeasure known.

Malta shifted uneasily. “I should... really go down there.”

asked Poecileth, clarifying. Even the meddling dragon knew when it was not her place to interfere. There were few such occasions, but a Hatching was one of them.

“Yes.” said Malta, standing up and beginning to make her way through the Stands to join the group of healers on wary standby.

Poecileth stretched, watching her rider with increased wariness as she left. Poecileth knew she wasn't supposed to go down there, but, despite knowing this, and knowing the consequences she would face from it, she still wanted to act as Malta's wall...

said Malta privately, taking her place alongside the other healers and scrubbing up, . The hatchlings usually focused their ire on the candidates anyway...

A hushed gasp had fallen as the brown approached the boy candidates, inwardly Kalendol cringed and sort of leaned slightly forward so her hazel eyes could shoot down the line of boys. 'I certainly hope he doesn't attack. Or maybe, if he does he can at least bond to the attacked candidate. Or! He could kill Emmit. That'd be something.' The girl would pay good marks to see that. 'No, that way of thinking is awful.' She restrained herself and then went back to her straight and rigid position, her hands clasping nervously in front of her. 'I'm so worried.'

Emmitod

Emmitod found it fascinating the way the brown loped threateningly towards the boys, and he watched it approach as if hypnotized. It was a beautiful creature – deep brown with it's eyes a brilliant flame hue.

Enter, stage right Emmitod thought to himself, The big brown dragon, newly born, with fire in it's eyes. he grinned at it's deep, resonant snarl, Out for blood

Any concerns that this event would be boring were thrown out the proverbial window: things were starting with a bang. Emmitod watched eagerly to see how it would unfold...

A few paces short of the front rank of the male candidates the brown paused, his low growl still resonating in his chest. Eyes like flame scanned the youths, needle-like white teeth flashed, claws flexed in the sand leaving furrows behind. He was searching, that much was clear, but was he looking for his rider or for a victim? After a few moments on candidate in particular seemed to catch his attention; Keep Out's gaze locked with Emmitod's and his growl intensified once more, flaring his wings as if in challenge. He then started to advance.

Jaric

Jaric had liked the first dragon to hatch. A nice calm blue, who looked over everyone before going to sit with his mom. Guess he watched to watch the Hatching, too. And there was certainly something to watch, as two more eggs hatched quickly to reveal greens. Very, very angry greens who quickly started fighting each other.

Jaric's eyes grew wide, and he rocked on his feet, wanting to take a step back. Would the greens come near? They seemed pretty focused on each other now, but they could decide to turn on the Candidates instead. Or even just bring their fight closer and attack kids by accident.

But he soon had bigger things to worry about when a brown hatched. One that was just as angry as his sisters, but unlike them, he turned straight for the Candidates. And started stalking towards the boys, growling and snarling.

If possible, Jaric's eyes grew wider. The small boy wanted to back away, or duck behind someone else. But it seemed like a bad idea to do anything that would attract the brown's attention, including moving. So he stood very still, trying not to even breathe too loudly, and watched the brown. If it charged towards the boys, could he get out of the way in time?

In amongst the girls, Allia took an uncomscious step back. Though the brown's attention looked to be fixed on the boys, it was no less intimidating to the wispy girl. Its focus could always shift. Or there were the fighting greens, whose battle could change course and bring them over towards the candidates. Then they'd have three angry hatchlings. Several other eggs were moving now, as well, and could hatch at any moment.

Any number of things could happen, not all of them good. Not many of them at all, in fact.
