I'm officially stepping back from Ask the Staff, as I have had to tackle some significant health and personal issues, but I am still working with the rest of the Admins to make sure everyone on Gaia keeps having a good time and we don't drown in bugs.

There's an "issue" that hasn't been resolved in SCAS. Um, any chance would look into it? It concerns the last testing and I think it would be nice to get it addressed. The thing went live so I was hoping for resolution for the last testing.

(I pm'd a certain person who shall not be named but never responded who is currently present. I wouldn't ask here normally if it weren't for that.)

Whoops! Yes, my apologies, been busy lately but we'll make sure that gets resolved for people.

Yes, definitely! Not sure exactly when, but do expect a survey at some point in early 2016 or late 2015. smile

Can we get a dedicated page that is self-updating of staff users, moderators, NPCs, or otherwise higher privileged accounts. The old staff thread http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/t.67361563/ is a bit out of date.

We're going to take a look into possibly recreating a thread like this and keeping it more up to date.

What is the potential for monthly user involved voting threads?

Such as a shop set to be recolored for the following month's shop release. Or something like the current "What would you like to see in Rococo?" but as more of a monthly user-input (and staff-approved) re-release RIG? Or the next NPC REI? Just something to look forward to as a "community inputted" thing each month.

Generally speaking, the stuff you guys request in the Rococo thread not only appear in Rococo, but get added to our hefty list of "Things Gaians Like" and get distributed into chance items. It's a great central hub for requesting that things return to circulation, but we also need to make sure that we include a healthy mix of items at different levels of value.

Long story short, if you want something to have more listings and it's not a tier exclusive, please suggest it in the Rococo thread!

Just some feedback for the latest LK survey.

I'm happy that you're asking us about what we think about the game but your survey didn't really cover much question wise. I wish you would have asked us to rate different areas of the game like ask us how we feel about the prize nerfs, how often kins drop, what we think about the time it takes to level up, the captcha, LK in future site events, and how we are able to organize them in our invos. I think you'd get a better grasp of what we think by asking us directly instead of relying on everyone to remember exactly what bothers them about the game. I like that you gave us an area to fill out what we think but since I hardly play it I didn't remember everything and I already submitted the survey so I cant go back and add to it. In the future you need to be more thorough with your questions that way you can get a more accurate response.

This was just an initial survey that we sent out to gather some preliminary data, don't expect it to be the only survey we're going to run for Kindred.
Rance Clear
This survey is meant to pull compile some very specific data. This is only the first of what may be many surveys! Alternatively, we also pore through hundreds of awesome feedback of the level of detail you're describing via the Lake Kindred forum on a daily basis and we're definitely taking it into account.

The last survey on the runway was, regrettably, extremely short for some users, being only two questions: how often do you use the runway and what is your username. I’m quite frankly surprised there wasn’t a question about the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow. But I digress.

Why did you decide not to have a simple yes or no selection and choose to add an option to prematurely end any further input by users who selected that answer, so as not to leave any users feeling like you are purposely ignoring anything and everything they might have had to say that could benefit the runway?

The last Runway survey we ran was to get feedback from users who infrequently use Runway, or stopped using Runway altogether. If you were directed toward the end of the survey, it's because you use Runway all the time. As a result, the questions we asked wouldn't be tailored to you. Such as, "Why did you stop using Runway?" Well, you never stopped using Runway so you can't really answer that in a way that is helpful to us.

"Did you know that we have big prizes in Runway?" Given that you use Runway all the time, you more than likely know that Runway has big prizes.

"What would make you want to try Runway again?" You use Runway all the time, so you're always trying it.

On the flip side, there may be a time where we run a survey where we try to target users who use Runway every day. So users who rarely, or never, use Runway wouldn't really be able to answer any questions we have for them. For example, if we had a question like, "What motivates you to enter your avatar, or vote on avatars, every day?" Someone who rarely uses Runway can't really answer that because they don't use it.

See what I mean? The feedback we were looking for with that survey is trying to understand why people used it, then stopped, and see what we can do to improve it.

Ah, I see, that makes a lot of sense, thanks for answering!

Although, I do think a simple yes or no would have been sufficient and just add a question for frequency of use for those who answered yes, cause obviously some users who answered yes may still frequently make use of the runway, just not all the time. In fact, I know of some users who, upon hearing how short the other yes option was, intentionally answered with the simpler yes.

Which in turn may have made your results from the survey less than accurate. For accurate results, it is best to use simple language and simple options to avoid confusion.

Having two affirmative options can be confusing for some users who may interpret "all the time" differently. An alternative way of clarifying it while still retaining a second yes option to filter out uses who more frequently use it would be to specify the frequency of use such as, "Yes, I enter everyday" or "Yes, I participate every week" or even "Yes, I participate multiple times during the week"

Well in particular with this survey we were looking for people who used Runway a couple times, then stopped using it altogether. What we're trying to address is, "Hey, you used Runway, but then you stopped. Why?" If you're still participating once or twice a week, then you still have interest in the feature rather than having lost interest entirely. I definitely think your suggestions are good ones if we start to look into, "Why do only some people use Runway once or twice a week? Why do they use it once a month? Etc. Hope that makes sense!
Zero Omega
XonyMudd
Un. Well some of us who are still using it frequently aren't enjoying it as much anymore and are more using it as a means to call attention to other users who are using it to the issues we have with it in its current form. And even then, some of my fellow protesters are getting tired of protesting cause it just feels like we're not making a difference and the disappointment we see of constantly repeating themes is wearing our spirits down and we're all starting to think that Gaia will just outright remove the feature as it appears to be no intention of regularly maintaining it to make sure that it stays interesting :c

Thanks. If you ever need any survey suggestions or ideas or tips, I'm free and willing to offer them up x3

One of the earlier surveys we did definitely made us aware that we need to have some more varying themes, it's something we're going to be doing. Probably won't be immediate, but we've heard you on that. We just ask for your patience as we work on it and some other new and fun things for Runway.

events - ask the staff

would you consider changing the way that the ask the staff event works? For example: on a two week rotation, week a would be solely about answering questions about the site itself; lake kindred requests/suggestions, marketplace questions, item requests, questions about upcoming events, etc etc. week b would function as a place for staff to answer for personal/fun questions; what's your favourite colour/item, how was your weekend, etc etc.

We have no plans at the time to change how Ask the Staff works, we've found that answering more personal questions leads to users being upset and thinking that we are avoiding other "more serious" questions. We try to sprinkle in some lighter questions here and there, but users seem focused on wanting to know answers to the more pressing questions on the site so we try to make those a priority over other questions.

What happened to the Community Updates?

THANKS Y'ALL! YOU'RE GREAT!

The NPC AMA is a cool idea and we'd like to give it a try sometime when time and resources allow!

The Community Update threads were not getting a huge amount of responses / reactions and due to a lack of submitted content, unreliable responses from thread hosts, and a lack of time from our writing staff, they have been on hiatus. We would like to bring them back at some point, but I can't offer a true timeline at this point.

I notice you guys haven't answered a lot of questions tonight...Are you getting stricter in regards to questions you can answer, or do we have too many repeat questions?

I know.
I think it's funny that this is Ask the Staff but they mainly reply to people complimenting them.
I'm a little frustrated to say the least.

True, though even with that the amount of responses is smaller than normal. I'll admit it worries me...Hopefully Sloth is fine.

A lot of the time I personally answer questions at the end, even after ATS closes.
Sometimes it's easier to type up a shorter response and leave the longer questions towards the end?
Zero Omega
I, personally, noticed a lot of the questions tonight were either:

1. Repeated questions from tonight.
2. Repeated from previous weeks.
3. Addressed earlier in the thread.
4. We didn't have the staff member on hand who could answer that question.
5. We didn't have an answer or chose not to release information that the answer would give.

Some ATS threads will have more answers than others, it just strictly depends on what kind of questions about being asked. Some we're incredibly busy with, and some we have don't have much to answer for the week. I'm sure if you compare week to week answers, you'll find that we fall within an average and that the amount answered hasn't dramatically increased or decreased, but has stayed relatively stable.

Snow Danger
And deleting the posts of people who don't lol

I find it especially funny because I was told last time they'd be trying to do
Less
Of that and now they're going and doing more of it rofl

And here's where I'm going to point out how wildly incorrect both statements are, using data from just today's Ask the Staff alone.

As of 5:00pm, there were a total of 65 questions answered, that number is more than likely to increase as we stay after to answer additional questions that we can get to. Of those 65 questions, 13 were "personal" or "silly" questions about the staff, so 20%. That is very few when compared to the total number of questions we answered that were of actual help the users, these questions were anything from bug reports, suggestions, issues on the site, to plans for future events, items, and more. So to say that we are mainly replying to people "complimenting us" is both unfounded and ridiculous, especially when you backlog prior ATS threads where you'll more than likely find that fewer light-hearted questions were answered. Furthermore, we've been seeing feedback just recently from users saying, "We want to know more personal things about the staff, but these questions don't get answered in ATS, can another be run?" The whole point of Ask the Staff is a way for staff members and the users to bond and connect, be that from answering questions and feedback about serious matters such as site problems, event information, bugs, etc to light-hearted and silly banter so that users feel the connection to the staff.

If you would like to give feedback on how we run ATS, you are more than welcome to. But I would suggest doing the research on what questions we answer before making sweeping, baseless accusations.

excitable sloth

So... Not a lot of questions answered today...
Why's that?

There were a lot of repeat questions this time around.
Also, I normally answer questions often time after ATS closes to get in most answers.

Last question. Is it natural for you guys to just ignore a question involving fishing?? smile )

Additionally, we say in the opening posts to ATS, the following:
Quote:
Not all questions will be answered.
There are a few reasons why a question might not be answered. Here are some of the most common reasons why that happens:

There are questions that are asked that have been asked and answered previously and the answer given there hasn't changed, therefore we don't answer that.

There are questions that we simply do not have an answer to at the moment.

There are questions asked in a format other than the one that we recommend you post in.

We have answered the question regarding fishing multiple times, the questioning being, "When is it going to be fixed? Is it fixed yet? Are you guys going to fix it?" And the answers have stayed the same, "We don't have an update at the moment. We know the community wants to keep it. It is something we want to address." Organizing a group of people to come to consecutive ATS threads to ask the same question, every week, is going to result in the questions ultimately getting ignored because we have no update and the answer hasn't changed. It is not effective for you, it is not effective for us because we already know people want the game, that fact is not, and will not, be lost on us. The community has made it clear they want to see the game fixed, that fact will not change and we acknowledge it. As we have stated, when there is an update that is of use to the community, we will post it in a staff notice so that the community is aware of a change. Until that time, we will not have anything that we're ready to announce to the community and continuing to ask these same questions will either warrant no reply because we have addressed it, or a reiterating of our current stance on the subject.

We've been told in the past that when questions go unanswered, it is because the appropriate staff member is not available to answer the question. Who should we direct our fishing questions to?

Other reasons questions may not be answered is because we have already addressed the question, or we have no update for it, or we don't have an answered prepared.

In this case, it is the former.

One of our fears in the Fishing community is being forgotten about. Can someone let us know every few weeks what the status is, even if there hasn't been a change?

There is normally an update about every few weeks when ATS gets hit with a bunch of Fishing questions and we reiterate that we have no update at the moment that we can post to the community and that when we have said update we will make a staff notice. It's not being forgotten about. We know Gaians want it. We know it's something that is incredible desired.

(Thanks for the survey, by the way. Was eagerly waiting for it)

I will! The survey closes later this week so you won't see them before then. I probably won't put out ALL the questions since some of them are just for us to collect data about what parts of the site people are currently using.

However, I plan on writing up a post with the results of some of the questions about what people most want to see worked on. Some of the things we are already working on and I'll try to address that. Some of them are things we may be able to address in the immediate future so I'll address that. Some of them are things that may take a very long time to address so I'll try to address that and give some reasons as to why they may be harder to fix or update.
