He was doing well enough a job that it kinda pissed America off. "Well you just ******** try. Edit is miles away from Caelius as a leader, she'll work you to the bone and won't tolerate your s**t one bit."

Dashing forward through the path he'd created, America turned into a furious series of golden arcs of chain. The winged hammer struck dead center with a satisfying crack.

"You should do actual work more often, since you're pretty decent at it," America panted as she fell back. Of course she'd attach a bit of nagging even to the most grudging of compliments.

"That just ain't fair missy, you have me typecast as some kind of lazy outlaw. Maybe you are just such a shining star that I get a little intimidated by ya." He gave her a bright perfectly neat smile. "Edith seems like a competent lil lady."

Another rat leapt forward and found its teeth wedged open with a sharp talon. It did feel pleasant to have at least some degree of mobility back in both hands. Perhaps in some ways this could be his musical composition, poetry in motion. Right now America was his unwitting co-writer, her elegant and potent weapon wreaking havoc on the creature.

"As long as she is not in the business of claiming her pound of flesh, perhaps I'd thrive."

However the compliment did seem to throw him just a fraction, giving her a momentary unguarded sort of look, keen and attentive as if trying to understand what her motives really were. She was spontaneous, she did not follow logical patterns, one moment he was a worthless slacker, the next moment he was mildly competent. He only understood pursing goals and she did not seem to pursue any.

The creature twisted and pulled its jaws free from his grip, leaping back towards her and he hissed an involuntary curse in Swedish, forgetting in the instant what mode he was even supposed to be in. It was difficult to concentrate with Butch demanding he use his charge.

In response, America snapped Stryker out and back to her, leaving an explosive fireball in his wake. The explosion wasn't nearly what it could have been, but still caused charred rat gore to rain down on their team.

The fireball did not make Lawr flinch. It was startling but fear was an emotion which was relatively dead to him, he saw no reason to move away from it when it was not focused on him. Even the hail of gore and viscera fell around him unheeded as his singular focus turned to the fight at hand.

There was no hesitation as the flames cleared and he leapt forward, picking up the slack Stryker left behind with brutal efficiency, plunging two handfuls of talons at great force straight into the wriggling and thrashing mass of rodents. The sound Butch made as he did so was quite, quite perfect. He did not comprehend emotions but for just a second in that baying howl of triumph and brutality, he felt he could almost touch it.

He paid no heed to the claws and fangs that nibbled at his shield, he paid no heed to anything but the howling and America's movements.

Between the combined attacks, the creature was visible wearing and breaking down. Turning as she punched a snapping, America called out, "I think it's gonna go soon! You need anything specific for science, Mimsy?"

Lawr did not turn his attention to Mimsy for the time being, though he was still listening intently to what was said, he kept up his stern and surprisingly brutal defence in case there was something arbritrary they would have to retreive.

His faith in science was not high, if he was honest. Certainly it was based around quantifiable fact and logic, but it had never even begun to distill the true essence of humanity, of emotions and drive. On a molecular and cellular level, certainly they had tried to comprehend it. But the progress was slow to none and nothing that he'd ever been prescribed had changed him.

A toothy mouth, snapped at America, cut down by Lawrence, but startling her attention back to the fight at hand. Pissed, the girl simply grasped the metal ball and punched at the much smaller, but still squirming center of the disgusting thing.

Truthfully, the tangle of rats was not the foe at the center of the hivelike underground structure that Mimsy had been expecting, but it was not uninteresting regardless. She shifted the weight of the bundle in her arms and took a few moments to inspect the writhing mass in front of them, carefully observing its movements and reactions to the antagonization that America readily provided.

The conversation between the two of her teammates went almost entirely ignored as she busied herself with her own procedures, seemingly lost in her own world of various dismembered rat parts, until a shower of the aforementioned rodent segments came raining down onto her.

She giggled like a child in a summer sprinkler and blinked owlishly at the redhead through her gore-splattered glasses.

"Oh, how thoughtful. I think these samples will assuredly be beneficial on their own," she began, smile fading into a more pensive expression as she turned towards the rats. "But an examination of a cross-section of this particular formation, if such a thing is possible, would..."

As she trailed off in thought, she summoned Svensyl to attempt to remove a slice of the swarm. The intrusion was just enough to finish off the weakened foe, and the vorpal blade struck stone much sooner than she'd anticipated, passing easily through the disintegrating remnants of the rapidly melting formation.

Slowly, with the majority of her body frozen tentatively in place, she tilted her head to glance between America and Lawr, refusing any further commentary until their reactions were properly gauged.

America began to clap. "That was a good hit, Miss Mimsy! Guess we could call it a surgical strike." She then proceeded to wink and laugh at her own cheesy joke. Fortunately America was long past her days of pinata rage.

Lawr stepped back the moment the creature was dead, desummoning Butch as if he had never had the talons summoned at all.

"Goodness gracious me." he said with feigned breathlessness. "That was quite a rodeo if you don't mind me saying missy and ma'am. Ahm just not too cut out for this here fightin' thing."

The punny joke went entirely over Mimsy's head, but she registered that it was a joke nonetheless, and coaxed up a laugh alongside America's. Most importantly, however, was the fact that she didn't seem angry with her - nor did Lawr, which was a relief of lesser significance. Maintaining an amicable standing with her neighbor was one of her prime directives, especially considering the ever-present risk of her other neighbor.

"Thank you. I truly appreciate the ease of the efficiency provided by your efforts. I have never worked with anyone who so effectively supported my tasks." She looked to Lawr and offered a small nod of understanding. "I can readily admit that am not generally useful in combat. My talents are more--"

A soft gasp cut her words short as she caught a glimpse of something that the last bits of dissolving rats left in their wake, and she knelt to carefully pick it up, holding the plastic bag by the very edge of one corner.

"How intriguing! I have not previously encountered an apparent correlation of this sort." She rose to move towards them, extending the bag at arm's length so they could get a better look at it.

Quote:
2. A plastic baggie containing cigarette butts and bottlecaps. Shift the contents a bit and you will find that in the center of the litter is what appears to be a dead baby rat, hairless and pink--and still fresh.
