He runs his fingers through her hair, lets her cry it out. She can abuse the shirt, because unlike with Noemi he's willing to sacrifice it for her.
It's odd to be doing this in the infirmary, where the walls are flimsy curtains and the bed is thin and uncomfortable. He's more used to hiding behind closed doors where no one can pry.
He does his best to angle his body and block her from anyone that might walk in.

She cries for a long time after. There are phrases mixed in with the tears, but they are mostly garbled and unintelligible.
Eventually she is cried out, and just remains silent, save for her pathetic attempts to sniffle it out and stop.
Mostly she's tired of weighing everyone down.

He waits until she quiets down before he talks again. It gives him time to decide what to do.
He decides that, for now, he's going to try to make her more comfortable while they wait for something more to happen. He pushes her hair out of her face and combs his fingers through it to return it to some semblance of presentable again. "Do you need anything from your room? I'll go get it."

It has always been us vs. them. There is never a time where she can remember living without this war-like mentality. Chris is her defense and the world is their assailant.
"No..." She says, which is odd because Chel has many things she would need. It reminded her of another thing she needed to tell Chris though. "I traded the N64 games for the movies..."

For some reason, that feels like the saddest part of the entire story. Maybe because it felt like Chel had traded a part of herself to make something work. Chris's face is soft and upset. "s**t, you're in deep, huh? We'll get them back somehow."

Deep in what?
"It's okay. I'll spend next month's paycheck on it." She blinks, catching her tongue. There is no next month. She keeps forgetting that.
She blows a long, ugly breath from her chest that ends in a weak cough. "Will you help me dye my hair later. I think it's time to go back." Jack had said he liked the pink and orange better. She thought she did too. "I don't think I can do it on my own."
