Chance's brows rose in amusement.

"Have you ever been to Detroit?" he said with a laugh. "Everything is the ghetto there. It's not exactly the most impressive city in the world. Lots of the place has fallen into ruin, to be poetic; there's a lot of abandoned buildings and it's considered a somewhat dangerous place to live."

To put it mildly. Chance took another sip of beer. "I do have plenty of stories about Twihards," he replied, a smile easing back onto his face. "And a few 50 Shades ones as well, though those are a little more creepy and a little less silly. Still ridiculous, though," he added. "When we got the last Twilight book, I thought the store would break after the amount of people trying to force their way into the place."

Ghosts? Chance tilted his head, giving Jack a look that was half curious, half contemplating. His fingers tapped absently against the side of his bottle.

"What sort of experiments?" he asked, and then said mildly, "Once or twice. Not much more than that, though, it's been kind of a work-in-progress. I'm pretty interested in it, though."

"I know a guy from Detroit, Leslie Miller. Guess that explains how he turned out so shitty," Jack concluded. "Plus when you've got teams as shitty as the Wolverines, I'd turn into a pissant too. Good on you for being decent, Bones."

He raised his spoonful of soup in a mocking salute and smiled.

"I conduct the usual tests: how it subsists, how it reacts away from the Haunted House, how its asexual reproduction works, how contaminated with Insanity it is. Fascinating when you put it against regular Fear specimens." Jack tore a piece of his cheese sandwich and dipped it in the soup to eat delicately. "I'm attempting to better understand the nature of their particular biomolecular structure, but there's only so much that can be done in a lab. When I lead a more thorough investigation of the house, would you be interested in joining, then?" Jack asked. "I'd also like to hear more about what you encountered there--particularly if it happened within the building or outside of it."

Chance let out an ahhhhh that was mingled amusement and surprise. "Leslie Miller," he repeated, and smiled as he lifted his bottle to his lips, curving a smile against the cold. "Ah, now that's a name I didn't know I'd hear again. How unexpected."

He did find Jack saying he was at least decent to be a step up from what he'd been saying before. Chance took a bite of his food, chewing slowly as he listened. He would have been lying if he said he wasn't curious about the experiments; he tilted his head sideways, a thoughtful expression on his face.

"I'm interested," he said, almost immediately, and smiled. "It sounds right up my alley of things to be interested in."

He poked a fork at his food. "Well, I went once with someone else - Abbi Killian - and we ran into these like...white blobby things that she said were ghosts. If we killed one, it would just respawn into another. They looked kind of weird, like...not creepy, but just kind of funny looking. Like bits of marshmallow."

WHAT ARE TIMELINES ANYWAY

"What, was he one of the Twihards?" he asked with a snigger. "No, wait, 50 Shades guy. I just know it. He looks like the type." He hid the rest of his laughter into another piece of soup-dipped sandwich.

As Chance spoke, he dabbed at his mouth with his napkin, brows raised curiously. "You went with AK? Huh. Small world. But yes, those are the ones," Jack said. "I might ask you to retrieve more for me depending on how well these tests go, then, to start. Did you two run into other rooms before cornering a ghost? That was what happened when I went."

Chance laughed, taking a bite of his food and chewing slowly before answering. "If only," he said, almost wistfully, and then snorted, shaking his head. "Nah, he was just a troublemaker that used to come around a lot, did a lot of trash talking, you know, made a lot of noise and s**t. Came back a few times just to be obnoxious, I think."

Chance laid his fork across his plate. "Is that what you call her?" he asked mildly, lips twisting upwards in a small smile. "She's seems nice enough. A bit hyper, but otherwise pretty cool. She was one of the first people I met when I woke up - other than yourself, of course," he added, with a slight smirk in Jack's direction.

He reached for the beer again. "Sure thing, if that's what you need, I'll be glad to assist. And we hit maybe one room, but nothing really of note. I heard there were all sorts of things, though, I'd like to go back and do a bit of exploring."

"I'd be careful about getting that wish granted. My understanding is that the Haunted House can create an nigh infinite amount of rooms to suit its needs," Jack said. "You rarely hit the same room twice if at all while on patrol there. Easy place to get lost in if you lose your pendant. That's not even factoring in the Insanity it's reeking."

He finished his coffee off with a slight shake of his head. "No, save your spelunking for after you get more field experience. I'd hate to lose a potentially useful contact this early in your career. Next time I go ghost grabbing, I'll take you along."

After the waiter came by to see how they were enjoying their food and Jack gave a simple, "Mm," and a look that said no more Captain Jack Sparrow jokes if you want a tip, he gave Chance a wry smile. "As for Abbi, a bit hyper is putting it lightly. But I'm glad you're making friends; not everyone can...get past her first impression." That part didn't sound quite as dry.

He tried to imagine this, couldn't, and let out a little whistle. "That's pretty impressive," Chance said, tapping a finger against the side of his beer. "Though I do have to admit that it just makes me a little more curious to see exactly what sort of rooms the Haunted House comes out with - within reason, of course," he added with a smile. "But you're right, I'll wait until I get more field experience. I'd love to come along with you the next time you go, so please don't hesitate in asking me."

The look that the waiter got from Chance was a vague, disinterested nod, all of his attention focused elsewhere. He jiggled one foot and lifted a hand, rubbing absently at one of his earrings.

"I'm not so..." There was a pause as he turned over the word friend in his mind. "Well, I'm not exactly certain what constitutes being friends, exactly, but I don't mind talking to her, if that's what you mean. I don't mind talking to you, either," Chance added, smiling at Jack. "Both of you are interesting, in different ways."
