"True," said Chance amiably. "Though I've never really been a hamburger person to start with; I prefer steak, but I do like macaroni and cheese a lot. Spaghetti's good too, but I prefer anything with Alfredo sauce."

He glanced around the room for a free table.

"Sure," he said, starting towards one on the left. "Tuna, salmon, all of that. I like sashimi too."

"What's alfredo sauce?" Oliver asked, not so sure he would like the answer with Chance talking about eating raw fish. "And sashimi? Wouldn't you get sick eating raw fish?"

Oliver knew so little about the world... But he did know how to spot a table. "There's a place over there we can sit, I'll just pull a chair from that other table... Um, i-if you wanted me to eat with you, that is, I d-don't mean to assume..."

"You know," said Chance, as he followed Oliver over to the indicated table without actually saying he was agreeing to sit with the other. "Alfredo sauce, the white cheese sauce that they put on a lot of pastas? You've never had that before?

"And I don't really know," he added, with a small shrug as he sat down at the table, already reaching for one of his apples to take a bite out of it. "I've never gotten sick from eating sashimi before, you should try some."

Chance uncapped his water and took a swallow, looking at Oliver somewhat curiously.

"Well? Aren't you going to sit?"

Oliver pulled the extra chair over quickly and took a seat. "I've had Kraft Dinner elbow noodles with white cheddar instead of the regular cheddar sauce, is it like that?"

It was only after his first bite of macaroni that Oliver realized exactly how hungry he was. Another forkful made it into his mouth in short order. "Ishnt-" The kid then remembered to swallow before trying again. "Isn't raw fish a little gross or something? I don't know if I could eat that..."

"Something like that," said Chance, taking another bite of his apple. "A white cheddar sauce is basically Parmesan, though it's a little fancier."

Chance reached for his water and unscrewed the cap, taking a swallow. "Nah," he answered, once he'd sipped. "It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's good, you should try it."

"Really?" asked Oliver, with a very skeptical expression. "But the alfredo doesn't sound too bad. It is probably nice restaurant food though, right?"

Oliver poked the macaroni around his plate. Arorangi would probably be proud, he had said hello, helped out a new trainee, and didn't even feel too nervous. Somehow it felt more like Chance was the experienced one, although Oliver had been awake longer, he had fewer years of his old life. When he 'died' he had not even been an adult.

"Did you like your old life?" Oliver suddenly asked.

"Alfredo is delicious," said Chance. He finished with his apple and set the core back down onto his tray, reaching for his fork to poke at the macaroni and cheese. "It's not really anything fancy, you can get it at the grocery store for a few bucks or some s**t. I like it better than this stuff, at least."

He dug his fork in and then raised it to his mouth, chewing thoughtfully at Oliver's question. If he was taken aback by it, it didn't show, Chance merely waiting until he had swallowed his mouthful of macaroni and cheese before he spoke.

"Depends on what part of my life you're talking about, really," he said mildly. "But I think the general consensus on that is a no."

"Oh." Oliver wasn't sure why he had asked, now it seemed like an out of place and almost rude question. But Chance came across as having an innocuous personality, pleasant, but thoughtful in a way Oliver couldn't quite pin down. "S-sorry, I didn't mean to bring up any bad memories..."

He poked at his macaroni. Not only did he eat like a child, but he seemed to have a similar appetite.

He smiled.

"There isn't any such thing as bad memories," said Chance lightly, stirring around his macaroni for a moment before taking another bite. He wiped his mouth with his napkin and then took a sip of water before moving back to the macaroni.

"Just memories," he continued. "That's all. No good memories or bad, just regular old memories of life."

Either Oliver lacked the maturity to understand what Chance was saying, or just the ability to distance himself. He thought back on his own memories, which were good, or bad, or, as his family interactions through his teenage years had been, a confusing mix of love and sadness. He had stuffed down much of his negative outlook after his mother had died, and in some ways it was impossible to differentiate between memories that were truly happy, and ones he just wanted to believe were happy. Sometimes he wasn't even aware of this difference.

But there was something about what Chance was saying that made him sad. It was the same when Ian had tried to coerce him to drink, and had been saying such horrible things as though just saying it would make it true. Chance smiled, but his words spoke of a great emotional emptiness.

"That... seems like a really sad thing." Oliver muttered down at his plate.

Chance took another bite of food and gave Oliver a faint smile.

"Not sad," he corrected, without any force behind the words. "Not sad, but maybe a little different. That's just how life is, isn't it? It just happens, and you go through it and do it and that's that. Memories are memories. They are what we make of them."

He'd said a little too much. Chance stood up and reached for his mostly empty tray, offering Oliver another mild smile.

"I should get going," he said. "But you're a good guy. Don't worry too much about me."
