Miss a chance to check on the new meat and make a good impression? Canoake could never miss a chance to Impress. Not when she had favor with several on the council and the higher ranked riders. Dressed in her favored skirts with flowing blouse and scarf, the green rider made sure her dragon was just as gleaming as she was. "My beloved, this shall be interesting, shall it? A question and answer, a chance to see who has brains and who is a dullard."

Tatath snorted with amusement. I agree. It takes brains to get ahead now. Several others we like are already there. She lowered herself for Canoake to climb aboard. Shall we?

We shall. And they glided across to where the group was gathered. Landing lightly, Canoake slid down and nodded to those she considered allies. "Greetings. My apologies for being a little late, Savarah. Hopefully, we have not missed all the fun." Patting Tatath, she let her green go settle with others before finding a comfortable seat for herself. "I am Canoake and my brightly colored lady is Tatath."
---------------
A shadow of a girl stayed back behind the others. She was almost easy to overlook if not for her eyes that watched with keen interest. There were a few faces she recognized and many, many more that she didn't nor did she care to know them. She had left Redd back at her small hole of a sleeping spot. No one should be looking for her right away as she had actually reported to her superior today.

When the girl, Arlii spoke about about raising atypicals, she looked up at the crimson dragon who was a much, much larger version of her flit. Eyes narrowed as others began to speak. C'per, she believed his name was, spoke about what it took to Impress and who to take care of oneself. Being physically fit. Looking down, she gave a soft snort. She might be small but Laenara did consider herself fit. Arms wrapped around, she continued to listen with intense concentration. Both of her parents had Impressed. She had to have it in her as well; perhaps, she would Impress one of the odd colors.

Vosin knew that only Malvren and Trine had "traditionally" helped eggs hatch. So since this gold and her rider were from Telgar they wouldn't have any more experience that most of Benden. It would be a learning experience for the gold pair, as well as the weyr. She hoped everything went well at the hatching and no mistakes were made. With that in mind though, she couldn't really ask Anali for advice on the subject.

Having grown up a weyrbrat, she wasn't really interested in the answer to her last question. She'd heard it all since practically she could talk. No one could say what made a dragon Impress to this candidate rather than that one. Though it had been fun to poke at the boy's pride. Would the dragons leave him standing?

Vee had heard more than she had. Probably from Malvren then. Vos listened unashamedly. This was interesting. The pride of Impressing an atypical versus all that extra work lugging a weak dragon around. She'd have to talk to her siblings about this; especially her twin, Ves. Vos cast another glance at the crimson. All that work for a dragon like that? Maybe.

Another, late arriving candidate, brought up another idea that made her grin. Touching. She really hoped they'd get to touch the eggs before Hatching Day. Vos gave a giggle as Arlii spoke up about atypicals. Hmmm, maybe she shouldn't rule them out yet. It was a tough choice, however in the end it wasn't really her choice. Vos knew she'd take any dragon that wanted her.

One of the other riders stood at attention like he was giving a lecture, and Vosin had to hide her snicker. True this was sort of a lesson, but she thought he was being a bit too over formal. Same old same old. She could recite in her sleep. The teen glanced around at the other candidates. Maybe they needed to hear it one more time. Although she felt he missed on one point, a dragonrider should train for Thread during a Pass OR Interval. Especially during an Interval.

She wanted to dance when she heard it confirmed that there would be a Touching. Shards she couldn't wait! Instead Vos settled for bouncing on her heels a few times. And here came another green and her rider. This was sure interesting. She wondered if the riders were coming to look at the candidates, or simply coming to allow the candidates to admire their dragons. Her lips twitched as she brushed her bangs a bit. She'd totally bet the latter.

Jamarin and Jikkiri

When introductions came about, the twins took very different attitudes towards it:

Jamarin refused to answer any questions about himself. Shaff that. No. He was not introducing himself. Instead, he glared at all the others, feeling mildly uncomfortable, though he gave Vee a nod. He wouldn't admit it, but he didn't mind the familiar face – and fists.

Jikkiri, however, was delighted. “Hi!” he said, “I'm Jikkiri and this is my brother Jamarin! We were...”

Jamarin stopped him. “We're in the wind. We do work. None of your business where we're from.” he said sharply.

Jikkiri laughed. “Don't mind him! Anyway, we are so happy to be here!” The whole thing was exciting – all these dragons, all these people who wanted to have dragons... wonderful!

Questions... questions... “I don't have any questions...” whispered Jikkiri to his brother. He did not like feeling stumped – would they be dissappointed if he had no questions.

“Don't worry about it...” Shaffing dimglow Jamarin thought affecitonately. Then he spoke up. ”So. Dragons. Riders. What do they do? Besides fightin' thread, anyway.” because if thread was all they did, then they were shaffing lazy stuffed shirts with big critters that ate more than their fair share, and Jamarin thought that was a ridiculous concept.

Vesresh

Vesresh huddled up to his sisters shyly. He'd not been able to introduce himself – he couldn't find a word in edgewise. He simply listened to everything else.

“Um...” he managed to speak up, pressing against Vosin as if she was his shield – and she kind of was, big sister and all. “What is a touching... like?”

Being Benden born and bred, he knew people who had attended touchings and hatchings and such, but this was his first year of actual candidate stuff, and so he'd never actually been to one of the things... Or bothered to ask.

Emmitod

Emmitod hadn't had to come to the question and answer party. He could have just stayed out of it. In fact, he'd almost had been reluctant to come: why spoil the surprise of the hatching? That would be like reading part of the script before the play is even on. It was cheating.

Not that Emmit didn't mind a bit of cheating. For the most part, the young man held back in the crowd, noticing Laenara

“Hello.” he said, pleasantly enough, “Looks like it might be a good show. What do you think?”

Z'radi and Green Rotatonth

murmured Rotatonth, Rotatonth shifted uneasily at the outskirts of the crowd. They had been busy. There was no need to take the trip between to Benden like this.

she chuckled,

Rotatonth huffed. It was still a break, and she did not like breaks.

Z'radi made a face at the councilwoman.”Hey.” she said to the candidates, ”Just ask, and we shall give... or something.”

”Anyway...” said the Greenrider, turning to Vee, ”Yeah. What they're saying. Nobody knows! Hey, you get to be one of the rare ones who get to know! How about that!” she chuckled. ”As for what we do...” she waved at Jamarin. She could tell this one was a fighter – which was great, as long as he didn't get himself beaten to a pulp and out of work. ”Well, we train to fight more thread, do politics stuff...” she snickered, giving a pointed gesture to the councilwoman, ”Haul rocks, carry people from place to place, carry stuff from place to place...” because that was just shaffing useful. She pointed to Malta, ”And this one here is a healer to boot. So yeah, we do lots of things.”

Malta and Green Poecileth

Of course Malta was there... How could she not be? There were candidates at her home weyr and they needed to have their questions answered and their problems resolved... for once, Malta was delighted and excited.

Poecileth was more... curious. This had the potential to be a very good thing for the Revolution – new blood amidst the ranks of the dragonriders, young minds to bring change to its fullest potential, a first step to true equality, and – perhaps – new allies for her and her rider. She sent an initial mental wordlessly pleasant greeting to all the dragons in attendence, and, a few words to specific dragons.

<Acriculeth. The same goes to you. >

<Symphonth. Do relay my regards to yours – I am glad her clear head is on the council.> Poecileth was, to say the least, pleased at the verdict on Atypicals.

Rugarth>

Erinaeth>
she said warmly to the crimson, Poecileth looked them over with a kind eye,

And she did. There were a lot of strong, opinionated young men and woman in the clutch. she murmured to her rider. Malta quailed.

said Poecileth, listening for a question she could push Hers to answer... but first.

she said, slightly wary. Tatath was not a bad green, but she was... a little... firey for the peaceful green.

Malta uttered a squeak as the intimidating greenrider pointed to her.

Poecileth could not remember the other green's name, but she sent Rotatonth a greeting anyway.

“Y-yes, I'm a healer too... I do, um... Lots of... healing.” she managed, painfully aware of all the people here. ”And, um... Touchings are... Well they're nice.” Poecileth nudged her rider.

”They, um... Reduce violence at hatchings and, um... They're just... really nice...” she shrank back, hugging her dragon and taking strength from her.

Poecileth crooned to her rider, She looked over the people. she said, 'hearable' by All (except, for the sake of politeness, those humans with bondeds), She rumbled invitingly, lowering her head to human eye level as she gently wrapped a wing protectively around her rider. Her eyes shone a bright green. she sent Malta an affectionate and reassuring purr,

Not that Emmit didn't mind a bit of cheating. For the most part, the young man held back in the crowd, noticing Laenara
“Hello.” he said, pleasantly enough, “Looks like it might be a good show. What do you think?”

Laenara frowned and ducked her head away from the boy who tried to talk to her. How dare he just randomly say things to her. Wrinkling her nose, she looked back and made a quick reply. "It's not a show. You're supposed to be listening and maybe even learning. No one knows everything about dragons, even riders."

Looking around, she felt sorry for the eggs if this was what they had to chose from this time. Either too serious, too snotty, or not serious enough for her liking. But only the dragon knew what it wanted in a rider. Moving a little further away so her back was against the wall and no others could approach her, Lae tried to catch the riders' answers to the sporadic questions.

--------------
Canoake looked out at the crowd, personally disappointed. None really stood out to her and since Tatath had shown no interest or potential as a Search Dragon, none of the boys & girls in front of her caught her eye either. "Depending on your skills, you may asked to run messages or people, carry supplies or guard them, go exploring, go hunting, work in your previous craft... The list is endless. Why, you could even find yourself sitting in front of a group of people answering their questions."

Snarky children that they were, they deserved a snarky answer, When the question about Touching came up, she gave a smile. "Imagine touching a shell and finding out it talks back. But not quite. Does anyone have a flit? You can get feelings, sometimes maybe a mental image, proddings, or pushes. If you don't do anything stupid, it's a matter of going in and carefully feeling the shells and seeing how they feel about you."

Vee's brow furrowed as she nodded along with the answers; made sense she guessed? Dragons, who even knew? She wasn't sure she was keen on the idea of an atype if there was a stronger than average chance it'd die on her but it didn't sound like you got a lot of choice in being chosen.

A flash of movement caught Vee's eye then and her muscles tensed up as her head snapped around. She soon relaxed though, it was only a dragon... quite possibly the most beautiful she'd seen to date. She'd marked the green up in the air plenty of times but seeing her up close was a real treat, and Vee made no pretense that she was looking at anything but Tatath.

Well, she was only looking at Tatath until another dragon arrived and then suddenly a voice arrived in her head anyway. The wiry young woman started in surprise at the strange presence and turned to face the larger green, her jaw set hard and her eyes narrowed. That had been... that had been weird. "No such thing as a stupid question? That's not what your boss just said," she called to Poecileth in her sharp high voice.

______________

A'nos drifted over to Canoake as she dismounted from Tatath, offering a small smile and a nod to the green rider.

Acriculeth passed to Tatath. He then turned to Poecileth, acknowledging the green with a small incline of his head.

______________

Savarah's eyebrows rose slightly at Vee's exclamation and she cleared her throat. "I am Councilor Savarah not 'her boss'. You would be wise to remember my title if you're going to talk about me in my presence." The 'stupid question' part however she didn't reply to. Instead she turned to Jamarin. "We fight Thread," she replied, "that is our primary duty. We have less than a Weyr's-worth of dragons to defend the territories of two Weyrs, which keeps most of us very busy. Most days it's either a battle or a drill and on days when our dragons rest we riders maintain our gear and perform other necessary tasks. As my fellow greenrider says however there is other work to be done as well. Some drill for warfare, some practice a craft, and some - like myself - perform other services for our wherholds.

"In the end however, what a rider does is up to that rider," Savarah continued, composing her hands behind her back and offering Jamarin the tiniest hint of a smile. "We must all fight the Thread and that will take up a great deal of your time, as I have said, but here in the wherholds no matter the colour of your dragon you are free to pursue whatever path you feel suits you best. Know only that those who are lazy will find their lives become quite difficult before long, we can't afford anyone who doesn't pull their weight."

<Poecileth,> Symphonth acknowledged softly, turning her head to regard the other dragon. she added privately,

Vesin muttered under her breath as she ran along the hallways towards the the candidate Q&A. She knew Vosin would likely already be there with Esre and she couldn't believe she had let that shaffing drudge distract her fro so long. Why did she have to have such a curious mind? She was supposed to be somewhere, she was supposed to be the more reliable of the twins and she kept grumbling under her breath until she finally found herself where she was supposed to be. There was quite a few people there but all she had to do was look for herself...literally. Once she spotted hair the same color, she made her way over to her siblings. Pulling Esre out from behind Vos and putting an arm around his shoulder and an arm through Vos' she sighed. "Shards that dimglow kept me so long...what did I miss?" She kept her voice low as to not bring attention to herself.

Tatath caught the child at her and stretched her wings out every so slowly. She had no problems showing off her beautiful markings to any who were willing to admire her. After a moment, she settled back down. Greeting Poecileth. Please don't cater too much to these fools or they will ask the same questions over and over again without hearing the answer.

Canoake smiled back, hiding her affection for the bronze rider. She also gave a nod to the others who had arrived. Listening to the other answers, she gave a slight shake of her head.

Mine believes them to be fools. As it is, she thinks we were the best of our clutch. There have been no intelligent questions yet and she will not give information to those who don't deserve it.

A pause in the conversation. Canoake's eyes narrowed as she noticed several listening and paying attention to the answers. Lowering her voice, she nodded at A'nos, her eyes giving the direction of where she looked. "We may have a few with a brain between their ears after all. How have you been? I have only seen you in passing lately with the exception of Banshidheth's flight."

xxSlowly, the young seventeen turn old nervously entered the area, her eyes widening slightly at the sight of so many riders and their gorgeous dragons. Dismay plagued her, a lot of candidates were here already. Momentarily, she wondered if she should back up now, but no, she would see this to the end. Swallowing her inhibition, the teenager lifted her head and walked towards the group of candidates, her head high and her eyes scoping the competition. If I have one shot, I'll take it. "Hello, everyone. My apologies for my lack of timing, I'd just arrived into Benden from one of the smaller holds. It's a pleasure to meet all of you. I am Kalendol." She smiled, a strand of auburn hair falling from beneath her cap. Tanner by day, dreamer by night, my goal is to take the world by storm with the wings of a dragon. Kalendol thought to herself with a small, sheepish grin.

xxTurning her attention now to the riders, the girl blinked in curiosity, This is here, to ask questions? But... what sorts of questions can you ask? Does it matter? Kalendol wondered helplessly, though her face remained cheery despite her inward feelings. Never let them see you're having troubles. This is your first day, Kalendol, relax. She warned herself even as her eyes fluttered between the dragons. Oh, what am I getting myself into? With a heavy sigh, the seventeen turn old wrapped her cloak tighter around her body, squeezing her rawhide covered hands slowly. Was I even supposed to introduce myself? Ah well, might as well have. Else no one will know who I am. Suddenly, a profound surge of confidence rippled through her and she cocked her head to listen to the questions and answers given. Interesting indeed.

xxBlinking her eyes, the girl rocked back on her heels, carefully contemplating what type of question she'd ask. These questions that were being asked now seemed to stir something within her, but they were all common sense. Opening her eyes she turned to the riders, "What is the impression like?" She naturally had heard someone say something about touching a shell and hearing a voice talk back, but that told her nothing in reality. All it did was say that you hear a voice. But what does it feel like? She wanted a more in depth answer than that. "Does it feel differently for everyone? Or is there something particularly altering that everyone feels?" Her head tilted as she spoke, and Kalendol put her index finger to her bubble gum lips carefully, blinking her eyes. The seventeen turn old seemed to care deeply about feelings, though this would later be revealed in character.

xx"And the bonds, I've heard riders have committed suicide after their dragon dies, so in essence, your dragon is naturally apart of you yourself correct? How does it feel? What are you supposed to feel? Do you share the same drives as your dragons? The same fears and weaknesses? Are your thoughts no longer your own?" The questions had begun to tumble freely now that she was breaking from her shell. Kalendol clasped her hands at the small of her back, watching the riders with intense fascination.

Emmitod

Emmit shrugged at Laenara, not offended or phased at all. “Suit yourself.” he said, “I think it's a decent prelude to the main event.” He was fine that not everybody shared his opinions about life, the universe, and everything. He didn't care.
When a voice sounded in his head, he jerked back in surprise, his face settling into a calm, almost feline smile. A dragon had spoken... maybe this would be a really great prelude, instead of just decent.

Jamarin

Main goal was to fight thread. Fair 'nuff. And they could do other stuff too – also fair enough. He liked her message of not being lazy. Fine. Good. He was satisfied with that.

Which left another question to ask. Jamarin smirked.

“All right, so. The other folks, in the other weyrs... y'know, not the wherholds... Do they do crafts, or do they sit around like fat wherries after they do their Thread 'n drills?” asked Jamarin, crossing his arms.

Jikkiri

'can't afford anyone who doesn't pull their weight' went right over Jikkiri's head. He chuckled at his brother's 'joke'

Vesresh

Esre flinched as an unfamiliar voice intruded into his mind. He had been a weyrbrat all his life, but never had he ever heard a dragon. At Vesin's appearance, he pulled his sister's closer, as if they could somehow shield him from all the things.

Especially his question being answered. He didn't have a flit, and – after the dragon – he didn't know if he wanted something else's feelings in his head like that. He had enough trouble with his own. “Th-thank you.” he managed, before turning to one of his sisters – it was hard to tell at this angle.

“Um...” he said quietly to his sisters, “Have you ever been to a touching?” He was sure they probably had, but he wanted to hear them say it, because then it would be a lot less scary sounding.

And he needed less scary things just now, because someone had mentioned Suiciding.. and that was scarier than anything else.

Malta and Poecileth

Her boss? Poecileth was amused. she said, delicately, to Vee (and the others), she rumbled. Symphonth.> she said privately. She was also kicking herself for not having come up with it... but ah well. It had been come up with, in the end, and this was good.

She turned her attention to Tatath, and wondered – briefly – if the other riders had any experience with children. At all. Ah well, first time for everybody. she said pleasantly, she added – compliments were always nice,

Poecileth sent a strong feeling of Welcome at Kalendol she greeted.

Malta managed to get enough confidence to speak up – it helped when she focused on the young woman who had joined them, and just on her. ”Um...” she said, trying to just look at Kalendol, ”I think it's different for everybody... for me...” she leaned against her dragon, ”It was the most wonderful thing...”

Poecileth sent a little mental kiss at her rider.

Z'radi and Rotatonth

murmured Rotatonth,

Z'radi shrugged. She could do whatever she wanted. Z'radi didn't have a problem with the older lady.

”Well, you're connected.” Z'radi said, nodding at Kalendol, ”But... Well, ever have a cot mate? Well, its like that, but in your head. You're different people, but you share, and I mean you share a lot. More than you'd like at times...” she smirked at her dragon.

<...>

”Now, I don't know what it'd be like to have Rota die on me... And I hope I don't.” she said,

<...>

<... Yes.> muttered her dragon, very displeased.

”... But I think that how close you are to your dragon is kind of... different for everybody. Me and Rota? We share things, and we dont share other things, and we're sometimes at odds. Like I said, she's my cotmate in my head.”
