"Well, it was the fence. The one we were building all around the garden? We'd been working on it so long and we were so close to finished...but then Alec did something to it and it just snapped. The whole fence gone, just like that." Larisa shook her head with residual disbelief. She'd never seen a fence do that before, it just defied logic. Poking at the food at her plate again, she shot a quick, guilty glance towards the other table and lowered her voice even further. "I, um, I know it's not his fault, really. He's so nice there's no way he meant to do it, but..." The blonde let out a sigh. "It's just hard watching something you put so much work into disappear."
Then a thought struck and her eyes quickly lifted back to meet Harper's. "Ah, but that probably doesn't seem like much of a big deal, does it? I'm sorry, I um. I guess I wondered if you were over here because of it, too." She gave a weak smile. "So I wouldn't be the only one."

Harper's brows furrowed, and she glanced up at Larisa.
"N-no. I.. I embarrassed myself in front of someone over there, and I'm.. I don't.. I'm trying to avoid him. I'm just here because it's dinner time." She peered over at the boisterous table and laughed softly, shaking her head.
"Alec will fix it. He's so sweet, I'm certain he'll make it up to everyone one way or another, you know? Admittedly, I should stop by the garden. I've heard so many people talking about it, and the fliers and.. I don't know. I've just been trying to avoid further embarrassment is all."
She was silent for a second.
"It's okay if you still want to sit here. We can.. feel silly about feeling silly together."
After tangling forks with Hwan for a moment Axel conceded defeat and took a look at the rest of the trays. Shun was still eating his, and Shun also looked like he might get stabby if someone swiped his food. Who else? Scanning the rest of the room, Axel spotted Harper talking with a blond girl he recognized but couldn't name. He looked away quickly, hoping Harper hadn't noticed.
On the whole, Hwan seemed like a pretty nice guy, even if he did get sassy with Alec and battle Axel with his fork. Axel decided the twins were probably okay. He looked at Tala curiously after Hwan's comment about marrying for love. Other than her inexplicable passion for horses, he didn't know much about Tala's reasons for joining. Unlike Tala and Hwan, Axel didn't really see what the fuss was about arranged marriages.
"Y'know, I don't see what's so bad about arranged marriages," Axel said, stealing a brown carrot from Alec's tray. "I mean, hopefully you get someone you at least get along with, and if your parents are arranging it they're not going to pick someone you hate. Right? Urk!"
It wasn't a carrot! It was the end of a wooden ladle!
Axel attempted to discreetly spit the piece of wood into a napkin, an operation doomed to failure from the start.

Larisa looked back over at the other table as Harper spoke, trying to figure out who she might be talking about. Not Alec, probably, considering how she'd just spoken of him, so who did that leave? There were the twins, and Larisa had to admit she often felt like she was embarrassing herself in front of them (or because of them?), so she supposed they were a possibility. She didn't really know the other boys well enough to decide if they were likely. But oh well, she supposed Harper would have told her directly if she'd wanted her to know.
The offer to stay and feel silly together brought on another warm smile. "Thank you, I'd like that." She made another valiant attempt at eating her meat slew, because she was still hungry enough to try, and called it a success when she managed to get a few pieces of potato down. Walls, she hoped that was potato. Then she glanced back up, considering. "Do you maybe want to go with me tomorrow? We'll probably just be finding more wood to replace the broken pieces, but um, it can be kind of fun too. You just have to watch out for speeding carts."
The trainee laughed a little, sparing another quick, considering glance at the others. "And if he's there, we'll just, um..." She paused, thinking quickly, then laughed again. "Well, you can give me a signal and I'll distract him, so you can get away before he gets too close!" She wasn't sure how she'd do it, but she supposed she could improvise. It'd be worth it if it helped Harper feel comfortable enough to join in.
Harper rested her elbows on the table before she cupped her chin in her hands. She was quiet as she watched Larisa poke around at her bowl of slop; maybe if she didn't acknowledge that Axel was alive and living, he would actually stop existing. She knew it was stupid and silly, but it made her feel a little better. And a little mean, which immediately made her feel awful, but Larisa's company was helping a lot, too.
"I would love that a lot, Larisa," Harper grinned, and this smile was much more genuine. "A signal." She giggled. That was so silly, but she didn't care. "That's a good idea. Do you see the guy over there with blue eyes and blonde hair? He's tall. That's Axel. And," her cheeks turned a little red, "that's who I'm trying to avoid. I kind of... told him I like him, and I thought he felt the same way, but it turns out he really doesn't, so."
She cleared her throat and peered over at Larisa.
"Embarrassing, right?"

Yesenia shrugged at the twin's inquiry. "I haven't decided yet. I'll probably go where Malia goes, though." The braided girl paused. "Come to think of it, Malia, where are you going?"
The green haired girl also shrugged, her arms crossed. "I dunno. I'll figure it out." In truth, the girl was actually leaning towards the Military Police, but she didn't want to say such a thing aloud.

"Survey Corps."
Once more, Shun answered tersely, without much as far as elaboration went. A few of the other trainees present already knew that answer, anyway.

Larisa's eyes returned to the other table, searching out the mystery guy as Harper began to describe him. Blue eyes, blonde hair, tall...Had to be that one there, sitting beside Alec. Axel and Alec, huh? It seemed oddly appropriate for the two who'd caused them to seek out this table to have such similar names. Harper's reasoning though, she quickly discovered, was a great deal more sound than her own.
"I'm sorry," she murmured, nodding her agreement to how embarrassing that must have been. "I can't even imagine what that must feel like." Harper was so pretty and seemed so nice, though, it was hard to even imagine why he wouldn't like her at all. She narrowed her eyes at the blonde, considering, then turned back as it occurred to her that someone might catch her staring. She gave her new friend a sympathetic smile instead.
"Then we'll definitely need that signal, I think. We should think of a really good one. Maybe, um, something you can slip into a conversation and no one will even know it but me." She glanced up with a thoughtful hum, as if she thought the perfect codeword might be written there. "What if it was something liiiike...A bee? If you tell me you see a bee, or if I tell you, then that means Axel is coming over and I'll make the distraction!"
Harper waved her hand, looking a little sheepish. Once Larisa started talking once more about signals, Harper couldn't help but look more than a little intrigued. She'd never, ever had a friend that was interested in having some sort of secret signal, and it was entirely too fascinating - and a little exciting.
"Okay, that sounds good. A bee. And if you see him coming, you just say that you see a bee, too, and maybe that way I can just... avoid him. Completely. That would be good, I think."
If she never had to talk to Axel again, it would be okay by her.
"When do you want to meet up to head to the garden, Larisa?"

"Well no rush for now!" Jeong chuckled at Yesenia and Amalia. It was odd how Amalia appeared to not have a plan, since everything about her screamed she was the type of person who liked to know things in advance. Still, it was a hard choice and she was right to not rush into anything if she didn't feel strongly about any particular branch yet. When Shun mentioned he'd be going into the Survey, Jeong smiled at finding another peer he'd be working with.
"Looks like you'll be stuck with us longer! We're going with the Survey Corps too!" Whether this was a good or bad thing depended on who you asked. While popular with some trainees, the Ryom twins were also making a few enemies as well around campus. The type to live as they liked, they were bound to step on a few toes.
"Guck, I don't think I can eat any more of this." Taking another bite of his slop, Jeong made a face before swallowing and admitting he was pretty much done. It'd be better to go hungry than try and down the rest of his tray. Glancing to Hwan, he checked to see if his brother wanted to stick around longer or was ready to head out as well.
Sorry to necro this thread, I just realized we never officially closed it! So get in however many posts you guys need for credit! I think most of you guys were already there but I needed one more! Or if you're done, don't feel like you need to post. I will consider the thread closed on Sunday, October 5th!

Amalia glanced back at her bowl of slew. "Yeah, it's not that good." Yesenia, however, settled her chin on the other girl's shoulder with her eyes closed, grinning. "Come on, Malia. It could be worse. Remember the red leek stew?" The green haired girl shuddered at the memory. To this day, aside from the color, she wasn't entirely sure what was wrong with that stew. Then again, she didn't like spending a lot of time thinking about it.
Shaking Yesenia off, Amalia sighed. "I'm going to get some training in before curfew. I guess I'll see you all later." Yesenia looked from Amalia to her bowl of slew, then back to Amalia and sighed before running after her. "Wait up, Malia!"
She didn't wait up.

"Yeah, we'll see you there." Shun muttered his intention to join the scouts and Hwan's eyes lit up. It was exciting to learn who his fellow comrades out past the walls would be. Shun was kind of quiet and aloof but that didn't bother the energetic twin much. Personal boundaries weren't really something he paid much mind to unless obvious discomfort was shoved in his face.
"You'll be fine wherever you end up, I bet." He nodded to Amalia, sincerely meaning it. She was kind of blunt and harsh at times but the green haired girl clearly knew what she was doing and trained hard to back up her word. Yesenia, he wasn't so sure about but in time the braided girl would figure things out most likely. She was probably like him, happy-go-lucky until she finally found something she truly invested in and then her focus locked on.
Much like Jeong, Hwan had had enough of the now lukewarm gloop in his bowl and he decided to pass on sampling the rest of it. God, it was like they'd run out of ingredients and simply mixed dirt and water in a pot and boiled it. Resisting the urge to spit it back out, he squeezed out of the mass of trainees at the table and put his tray away. Blonde loops caught his eye and he waved to her. When had she come in? Ah, well, it was too late to chat much now but maybe the next day.
"Risa! See you tomorrow at the garden, right? Fresh start and all." They would have a lot to rebuild but after the awkward but charming heart to heart with his peers tonight, he was feeling a lot better about diving back into it. They could do this.
Heading out the doors to the dining hall, cool fresh air wrapped around him and Hwan yanked his dear brother along with an arm around his shoulders into the darkness.

"That's right!" Larisa nodded eagerly again, utterly invested in this idea already. "And no one will think it's weird if you leave because who wants to be stung by a bee? And if for some reason you can't make a quick getaway or he keeps coming, then we just say it really loud and then everyone will run." She laughed a moment, imagining the scene something like that might cause, and just as she settled down to answer the question she heard her name called out. Well, most of it anyway.
The trainee blinked, turning to look, and found Hwan heading for the door. A lot of the others seemed to be leaving, in fact, so maybe it was getting later than she realized. Quickly, she lifted a hand to wave back to him. "Yeah, I'll see you there!" Then she pulled herself to her feet, grabbing her tray and smiling back at Harper. "I guess I'd better get going too if I want to get any sleep. Let's meet at the garden tomorrow after first chores, alright? It'll be a lot of fun!"
With a final nod and a cheery 'goodnight', Larisa set out as well.
