A Hired Killer's Guide to Combat Training Seven-Year-Olds

To whom it may concern,

The snow has melted, and Father brought Akara and I out for lessons again today. The bow, this time, as it is his favorite - and Akara's too, it seems. I embarrassed myself, of course. Despite what Father says - and even what my sister has suggested to me in what I'm sure she considers to be an 'encouraging' manner - I know I will never be good at what he hopes me to be good at. Carrying a weapon makes me feel slow and heavy. Training with them makes me sore everywhere. I'm not strong, and I don't suspect I ever will be.

I hope Father will understand this one day. In the meantime, I am spending as much time on the spells Mother and Uncle Lithian have taught us so far as opportunity permits. Reading is becoming easier, though there are many words I still struggle with in text, and the variety of different languages is frustrating and inefficient. Why do we not all communicate with one language? To try to learn one set of rules for the dovaa script, another for those born on Soudul, and still some others for desert common scripts is frustrating. Eventually, I will need to master them all so that nothing escapes me. Until then, Mother reads to us in dovaa script, and most of Uncle Lithian's library is that, so my focus is there first.

Perhaps one day, someone will invent a script that all can read. It would seem to make far more sense that way.

To whom it may concern,

Mother and Father had to rescue us from the smallest of all dragons. I failed my sister, and myself. I must learn to use magic capably.

Where The Wild Things Are

To whom it may concern,

I found a boy today. Or, I am fairly sure it was at least partly a boy. It was wild and rancid smelling, filthy and ill-tempered, and it invaded my practice space. I can't conclude it was very intelligent, dirty as it was and little as it talked. It smelled me like an animal and walked on its hands and feet together, making strange snarling noises, touching my hair and invading my space. It even bit me.

I should like to see it again.

Can You Keep A Secret?

To whom it may concern,

Dysarrin. [Name is written down several times with a couple different spellings.]

The wild thing from the other day had a name. He only told me after I gave him one myself, but I suppose it isn't so bad. It doesn't sound as much like him as the one I gave, but it is nicer, maybe. Long and complicated, like a spell. I like the way it sounds.

I brought Akara to see him, but she doesn't like him so much. She was scared, even; it surprised me, since she's always so brave. Perhaps he just seemed especially strange to her. Regardless, I won't bring her back unless she asks to come. She even threatened to tell Father. I know Father would never let me keep Dysarrin or even see him. If she'd told, he would have stopped me from practicing on my own, too, and kept me in the house. I can't do that. I promised Akara I would make spell stones for her, to warn her if I'm hurt, and warn me if she is. I don't think I cast the spell right, but it looks good for now. One day, I will have to learn the spell properly. For now, at least she won't tell Father. She thinks Dysarrin will hurt me, but he won't.

              I know it. She'll see.

To whom it may concern,

I found Dysarrin in my spot again today. I had brought him some proper food, but I forgot to share it with him. Instead, he showed me these strange leaf bags. At first, I thought they would be boring - they looked boring - and he seemed excited over nothing. He does seem to get excited over strange things. But then, he showed me how they work.

They explode. And, he can breathe fire! I've never seen anyone breathe fire before, only heard of dragons doing it. I wonder if maybe he is part dragon. He has wings, and claws, and growls more than he talks. His scales are a shimmery firani red and dark, and it seems in his nature to act and eat more like a dragon than a boy. Whatever he is, he had many of the exploding leaf bags, and we played with them, throwing them up and shooting at them and watching the rocks zip out.

At the end of it, he said he liked playing with me and wanted to again. Dysarrin is my first friend.

Grandest City Under the Sun

PRP: Link
Result: Ataya gets sick. Dysarrin comes looking for him.

Word Count: 2,509
PostPosted: Tue Nov 25, 2014 8:54 pm

To whom it may concern,

I woke sick this morning. For the first day ever I could not go to practice or to see Dysarrin. Everything hurt, and it was horrible. I thought he might forget about me, but he didn't. He snuck into our house!

I am not sure how he got past Father, but I was happy he cared enough to come. Father even let him stay, for a small while. He didn't seem to like mine and Kara's room, though, and he didn't understand what race our parents were. He didn't understand what race I was. No one has ever thought I was a pureblood before, but he seemed to think so? He looked at me like the pureblood children in Taliuma do. Like something was wrong with me. Like he knew better.

I don't understand. He's such a messy hybrid. He's dirty. His clothes are terrible. He doesn't even dress properly and eats raw meat. His parents can't be purebloods, if he even has any. How can he think different of me? How can he be so wrong?

He ran away. Like he was scared. I don't know if he'll ever be back...

I'm not going to care. I don't need a friend that stupid anyway. If he does still want to be my friend, he should apologize. I hope I am better soon.

Insects, Death, and the Magic of Friendship

PRP: Link
Result: Ataya recovers from his sickness, still irritated with Dysarrin for abandoning him and calling him 'wrong' for being a hybrid. Dysarrin explains he likes his wrongness, though, and Ataya is appeased. The friendship endures.

To whom it may concern,

Dysarrin was not at my spot at first, and I thought he wouldn't come. I practiced my magic alone. Then, he snuck up on me. Late. I was happy to see him, though I didn't tell him so. I didn't really want him to just leave me, but he wasn't fair earlier.

When I talked to him, he said that he liked my 'wrong.' I'm not sure what he meant, exactly, but it was nice, in a strange way. Even those children who aren't precisely mean about it don't like my sister and I for what we are. It would be easier if we didn't need to prove to be something else to please them. I like Dysarrin, in that way. I need to think about it more, too. Maybe I shouldn't have to be different than what they imagine. Maybe they should like me 'wrong' or not at all.

Regardless, Dysarrin said we were friends, and that he liked me better for it all. He may be the only friend I make, if no one else can like me.
