Anita quirked a brow, ”Maybe.”
As Mordekai got comfortable at the table, Anita sipped her chilled drink and looked out at the beach. The sky was still clear over them, but there were some clouds rolling in over the ocean. Maybe some rain in the next hour.
”Mm, I think Duncan mentioned that before... I dunno! They're all gorgeous and it'd be nice, but I don't know what we'd do with them.” Anita looked down at her feet. She pursed her lips and wiggled her toes in her shoes. ”I guess we could fit some more on the balcony. Windowsills.” She grinned. ”Get some really good smelling ones to put on the back of the toilet. ”

“Ah, yeah, I getcha.” He looked up at the sky as Anita looked down at her feet; he also noticed the clouds overhead, which sparked his interest. He laughed lightly and shrugged, “Balcony's good, windowsills're good... if y'want good smellin' ones, we got plenty of sweet peas an' lily o' the valleys,” he paused and tilted his head in thought, “An' gardenias, those're good ones. If you really wanna get rid of s**t smell, though, you gotta get lilacs. Those ******** stronger'n perfume. Lavender, too, if you're into 'em.”
He paused and smiled sheepishly at Anita, “Sorry, ramblin' about flowers.”

Through Mordekai's explanation, Anita kept her glance firm; she held a small smile and her eyes were wide, attentive. A giggle sneaked between her teeth when he got into his description of lilacs and lavender, only to be followed by a grin and an indignant shake of her head.
”Sorry for talking about what we were talking about,” she teased with a slightly deepened voice. ”I'll keep all of that in mind. Cruz and I really loved the garden, and I'm sure my mom would really love to see some more green.”
A low buzzing sound started in the middle of her sentence, but Anita ignored it until she finished. She dug her phone from her pocket and looked at the front screen-- ”Speak of the devil.” –then flipped it open to her ear. ”Yo ma,” Anita paused, then chuckled, ”What's up? Yeah, I'm good. I'm with a friend. Yeah, I can see the clouds rolling in. No, but I have my hoody. Mhm! Want me to pick up some coffee for you while I'm out? Sure. Okay. Love you too, go put your feet up. Bye.”
With a small laugh, Anita closed the phone and returned it to her pocket. ”She just got back from work.” Anita picked her drink up and smiled before taking a sip. ”She says 'hi', by the way.”

He ducked his head lower but managed to keep a smile through his embarrassment. “Sorry,” he issued, then nodded attentively, “Yeah, gotcha. Sure Duncan's gonna talk t'you sooner'n later, anyway.”
Mordekai kept quiet and drank his coffee when Anita responded to her call, his attention shifting again to the clouds overhead. He smiled at Anita's mention of it, then looked back toward her when she said her farewell. He grinned, "Ah, yeah? Must've been an early mornin' for her... tell 'er 'ey, too.”
Mordekai took another sip of his coffee and smiled wide out toward the clouds, “You think it'll really rain?”

”Yeah, her schedule's kinda flippy floppy. I certainly will-- you can say it yourself if you wanna pop in a sec later, y'know. Say bye to Cruz and Tango.” Anita looked back out towards the clouds and took a deep breath. ”Smells like it. Probably won't be for another half hour, at least.”
With a short double take, she picked up on Mordekai's smile. ”Excited?”

“Oh-- if 'm allowed to,” he scratched the back of his head and shrugged, “That'd be nice.”
Mordekai took in some air, too, nodded at Anita's sentiment, fingers excitedly tapping at his cup again; his eyes were still focused outward at the shore. “Awesome,” he noted; Mordekai drank his coffee and glanced at Anita. He nodded, then hummed with his lips still against the plastic cap. He pulled the cup away from his mouth and smiled, eyes creased and all. “Haven't gotten to see much rain yet this year. Always look forward to it.”

Anita smiled despite the crease between her brows. ”Of course you're allowed. ” That caught her by surprise.
The smile he gave her was more candid and genuine than she'd seen from him in a long while, perhaps ever. It was infectious, and Anita's smile widened to match. ”Yeah, rain's nice. Doesn't look like a storm out there or anything. Should just be a sprinkle, so your drive back shouldn't be too bad.”

His smile had already grown from Anita's permission, but seeing her smile back at him caused Mordekai to grow even more enthused all the same. He nodded and his expression by drinking his coffee; he knew it was a little ridiculous to get so excited for rain, but he couldn't help it.
“Yeah, that's gonna be great... wish I'd biked down here instead, now,” he chuckled and popped his cup open. Steam rolled out from the bottom, but there wasn't much coffee left. “Savor the rain an' all. Think it'll carry to Durem an' Barton?”

”Oh, so you wanna get soaked,” Anita laughed while stirring her drink. It was already half gone, since she got the smaller size, and the whipped cream was starting to melt. Better to just mix it all together.
At his prompting, Anita leaned forward again to look more closely at the clouds. ”Looks like it's coming up from Barton. You might catch the end of it,” she shrugged and smiled, ”If you waited a little longer you could have chased it here.”

Mordekai smirked while drinking his coffee, then raised the cup toward Anita, “'Course! Das the best part.” He tilted his chair back a bit and tilted his head back-- if he had less shame, he would've asked Anita to go to the top of the Starbucks roof with him. It was more than plausible.
Mordekai rocked in his chair a bit in thought, then grinned, “Hopin' so... damn, you're right,” he let the chair's front legs hit the floor again, then took a swig of his coffee; he chuckled, “Never done it before, though. I'm hopin' it involves surfin' on clouds?”

Going up on the roof hadn't even crossed Anita's mind. If she had a little more daredevil in her, she might have said yes. For now, the table and the open air, the darkening sky and cool breeze picking up, it was fine beneath the awning.
”So I see.” Anita's eyes lit up and she laughed. ”Man, that'd be nice. Just floating on clouds. It'd be cold, though,” she pulled her jacket over one of her shoulders, already feeling the goosebumps from the increasing chill. ”Coffee warmin' you up?”

Mordekai blinked and laughed back at the sentiment, then shook his head. “Nah, man! Don't gotta be alla way up there, right? You could float 'round on a cloud like Goku or somethin',” he took his coffee lid and waved it around with his hand, to demonstrate, “Swoop down an' kick a**.”
Anita's mention of cold was reminder enough for him to recognize that he was on the verge of freezing. He wasn't as effected by it as he expected to be, though, and he looked down at his coffee in pleasant surprise. “Yea! S'been great,” he took the time to set his cup down on the table and unroll his flannel and jacket sleeves, “But s'almost out... sorry you gotta cold thing. You doin' okay?”

At the mention of Goku, Anita's laugh was practically a chirp. She quickly covered her mouth with a hand. With her giggling muffled, she made sure not to interrupt Mordekai – though she did give an upward kick to the air from her seat.
”It's okay,” Anita grinned. She took a moment to pull her jacket around herself and zip it up just to her ribs, then pull the ends of her sleeves over her hands so her fingers just barely poked out before picking up her drink again. ”It's delicious. You gonna get a refill? Or should we start heading back soon?”

Mordekai laughed as Anita did while still fiddling with the cap, then let it settle on the table. “Somethin' funny, Goku?” He drank up the last of his coffee and put the lid back on the cup, tilted it from palm to palm as Anita piped up.
“Ah, good. Oh--” he looked up and to the side to rifle through his pockets. Once he found his cellphone, he checked the time, “Mm... I should prolly head back soon an' start preppin' dinner an' leave you be,” he smiled wryly, “We finally stopped livin' offa crawfish this week.”

”Surprised you mentioned him,” Anita mentioned under her breath, still smiling as she took a sip.
When Mordekai checked his phone, Anita pulled her own out as well. ”Oh, yeah. Gotta get Duncan fed. Psh, I'm surprised they kept this long.”
The clouds were getting closer now, nearly to the breakers on the beach. They were gloomy but Anita couldn't detect any signs of thunder. They would just be getting a shower today. ”Well, thanks for dragging me out. This was really nice.” She rolled up the bag of cake pops and tucked them into her spacious pocket, then stood and stretched her legs. ”Guess we can finish on the way back, unless you wanna chuck yours now.”
