Jack nodded at Sephiroph’s answer. She didn’t quite agree with that philosophy. Even if you had nothing to live for you never knew what tomorrow would bring. Maybe it would bring something worth living for. In addition Jack believed in looking Death in the eye and saying, ”Screw you! Today I live!” However she wasn’t asking questions to discuss philosophy. She wanted to get this man much better.

Jack nodded at the comment about her skill though she kept her attention to where she was walking, “You have to understand, I’m use it being just Chimamire no Yuki and I. I had to learn to cultivate an understanding of at least basic medical first aid to survive.”

Chimamire considered that, “You know it’s a miracle you can still walk. Do you remember the time you broke your right leg in four different places? You didn’t set any of them right so you had to break them again.”

Jack mentally scowled at her Zanpakutō even though she managed to retain and easy looking smile, “In my defense I was recovering from various chemical additions at the time by quitting stone cold.”

The Zanpakutō responded, “That’s another thing I’m surprised you survived.”

Jack turned her attention back to her list of questions, “So, Sephiroph. You didn’t kill me. You had a chance to. That whirlwind fire attack caught me completely off guard. Why didn’t you kill me? On a related note why are you walking with me like we’re friends?” Jack laughed, “Not that I mind that but, it might make your life easier if you killed me.”

Jack rolled her shoulders. Her burns were starting to itch. She clasped her hands in front of her chest and pushed out. The stretch on her arms and back helped relived some of the itch but, as soon as Jack dropped her arms the itch returned. The skin on her back was starting to pull tight.

Then Jack was in a dark room. The only source of light was a tapered pillar candle made of dark and vibrant green wax. The single flame illuminated a pair of hazel eyes filled with sadistic glee. The candle was tilted and a drop of wax fell.

Chimamire no Yuki was calling desperately, “Jack! Jack! Jack!”

Jack came back from the memory and, looked at her upper left arm. There was nothing there; not even a scar. Sometimes Jack thought that was the true miracle. Despite her trials and tribulations her skin was flawless.

Jack told her Zanpakutō, “I’m here.”

Chimamire let out a sigh of relief, “Thank goodness! Do do that! It scares me!”

Due to Jack’s practice she was still smiling nor had her smile faltered during the flashback, “I mean it would be simple enough to tell the Central 46 that I murdered someone then attacked you. They would belive that. They don’t like me, the slut Captain.” Jack chuckled, “They would be impressive that you managed to defend yourself against a Captain and, even though they would have you watched for a while they would probably give you job.”

Jack stretched again. This time she was careful to anchor herself before releasing it.

╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
Final thoughts: Maybe it's not a miracle. Maybe they did something to me to prevent me from scarring.

Sephiroph sensed a disturbance in the air once Jack stretched for the first time. He had no idea just what it was but the fact she was searching over her arm left him the impression she'd been burned before. Possibly. He didn't ponder over it further, however. There were questions to be answered.

"Basic medical aid? I've no talent in the subject other than healing burns and giving myself hell while trying to heal more serious wounds by just burning them closed." Sephiroph smiled sheepishly and lifted a hand into his hair, scratching the back of his head as if he was embarrassed about the subject. Every time he'd had to burn his own body he'd act like a child getting vaccinations. Shakunetsu would try and soothe him through the process but he would always hate it. It was something he was ashamed of- fear of being burned when his own Zanpakuto had the essence of fire itself. Something he'd never let anybody see. A weakness. This was something hard to discover though, for Shakunetsu could not burn him; it was impossible. It would have to be the flames from another to bring fear to his eyes.

Sephiroph pushed the thoughts from his head about the burns to answer her next question."It's simple. I did not kill you because I had no desire or need to. The real question is, why didn't you kill me? I'm aware that I'm strong and my looks may have caught you off guard because of how handsome I am.." He paused and chuckled softly, obviously just messing with her again. "But I know those aren't the reasons you did not kill me. And the reason I'm walking with you like we're friends is... well, I'm not sure. Maybe a part of me wishes to be friends with the woman who spared my life."

Yet again now Jack would stretch out, causing Sephiroph to wince a little in thought of the pain. Sephiroph picked up the pace until he was right up behind her and carefully reached a hand up to her back. He did not ask but did so anyways without thought of the consequences of just touching a Captain's burns out of the blue. His hand was gentle and cold to the touch- almost soothing like aloe on a sunburn.

"Allow me to fix what I have done?" He asked in a kind manner much different from his obnoxious attitude that usually followed him. Sephiroph looked to her, his eyes still piercing but no longer through one's soul like they usually felt. They were more concerned now; if that was even possible for him. He'd almost missed her comment on getting a job if he'd turned her in and only responded to it after noting that he could fix her burns.

"That doesn't seem like my style of getting a job within the Gotei. Turning you in and bragging about fending for myself against you just sounds like an awful lot of bragging and boasting. Plus, I don't rat out people I am interested in on the level you interest me. If that makes any sense whatsoever." Sephiroph said, his eyes staying glued to her back now rather than her eyes as if he were avoiding looking at her. He told the truth of not wanting to turn her in but did not look at her because he was letting her see some of his true kindness. Being seen as a pompous a** was better to him than being seen as his true self. It was a confusing matter with him that could not be explained even if he tried.

Jack sighed when she felt the cool touch on her burns. That felt good. Jack was just in time to keep her eyes from slipping closed. She couldn’t fall into pleasure quite yet. She still had things to do.

Sephiroph was a good man. Chimamire no Yuki hummed her approval of that statement. In fact he might be just good enough to keep Jack from slipping into the evil that she was sure awaited her. Chimamire no Yuki choose to remain silent. He would make a fine Lieutenant. Chimamire hummed in approval again.

Jack spun around and jabbed her finger at Sephiroph, “You are a good person. That’s why I didn’t kill you. You can pretend that you are a jerk all you want but, you are a good person.” Jack needed to make one thing clear, “I would have but then you didn’t kill me. As a result I felt a need to figure you out. Now that I have.” Jack pulled back and crossed her arms over her chest. She was still smiling but, she was also serious, “I need to know. How good are you at paper work?”

It was an odd question that went off tangent to Jack’s previous questions but, Jack needed an honest answer to the question. She hoped Sephiroph understood that. It was incredibly important.

It was the second to last question that Jack had for the blonde, blue-eyed man. The next question was a little more complicated so, it would seem like multiple questions. However now that Jack determined that Sephirioph was a good person all she needed to go was figure out if he would be a decent Officer. She found herself hoping against hope that he was.

Jack didn’t respond to his request to fix her burns. This wasn’t the worse pain she had ever felt. She doubted that she wouldn’t feel worse in the future. In fact sometimes her phantom pains felt much worse.

Sephiroph was taken aback by her strange question. Paper work? What did that have to do with anything they had just been discussing? He found it peculiar that such a thing would be brought up in the midst of all of this. Sephiroph pulled his hand away from Jack's burned back and shoved it back into one of his pockets, shrugging a little.

"Well. I've hands that can write so I assume I'm just as good as most with paper work. I know back in my Academy days I had to learn how to properly fill out paper work and the sort so I guess I'm adequate at the least. I mean, it's definitely not the most fun job in the world but I anticipate a lot of paper work if I ever get accepted by Central." Sephiroph replied.

Sephiroph had never been a part of the Gotei Thirteen before so he never had to file any paper work or anything but his penmanship was superb and precise, not to mention elegant. Though that did not matter much when it came to paper work, it did give him the ability to at least get all of the writing and filing done that he'd need. Yet he did not know if that would ever happen what with Central not giving him an answer yet.

"Oh and I'm ambidextrous...meaning both of my hands are quite sufficient with writing...among other things." Sephiroph told her and a big grin appeared on his face- obviously one of the perverted sorts. He was apparently done being completely serious for now, as made evident by his words and facial expression.

'Sephiroph, I'd like to note that is your new record time for being serious within the last year. Congratulations.' Shakunetsu told him sarcastically.

'Really?! Damn I've gotta work on being less serious or I'm going to get wrinkles and frown lines!' Sephiroph responded with just as much sarcasm in his tone of mind.

'You know, Shakunetsu.. this is the most you've spoken to me in a very long time. I can't help but wonder why you've become so chatty lately? Most of the time in battle you'll only speak out when I ask for help or when I'm in immediate danger. Now you're making comments on how I act and the lot.' Sephiroph wondered. Normally his Zanpakuto was silent for the most part until spoken to but ever since Sephiroph met this new woman Jack, Shakunetsu had become more talkative.

'Because you're thickheaded. You are in the presence of a Captain-ranked officer and do not even know how to act around such a person. Much less how to fight one at that. You survived on pure luck and good tactics but this woman could have killed you in the blink of an eye if she had released her Bankai. Now she is testing you yet again and you do not even know it. You answer her questions as if they are foreplay. Start thinking straight.'

Sephiroph had not thought of Jack's questions as a test until Shakunetsu had commented on his stupidity- making him feel even more foolish. It did make sense in a way. But why was she testing him? What motives did she have?

Jack was surprised that she had no desire to respond to Sephiroph’s flirting in her customary manner. Chimamire no Yuki was impressed that her mistress was still managing to be serious.

Jack just about snapped, “This is serious Sephiroph! Please act like it.”[/color Jack manage to calm down by taking a deep breathe and, then she spoke softly, “Now, this is the last question I have for you. Can you follow orders on a battlefield no matter what your personal feeling towards your superior are? Can you be trusted to do everything in your power to bring back everyone, including yourself, who goes out to battle with you? In a situation where a hierarchy is clear can you take orders while giving well thought out orders to your subordinates?” Jack’s honest came out of her in floods as her voice started to rise, “Right now I am not Jack. I am Captain Mallory of Division Three, the Long-Ranged Weapons Division.” Jack gestured at his Zanpakutō, “With a Zanpakutō like that,” Jack jabbed her thumb at her chest, “I am the one you need to impress!” Jack’s voice was firm and sure, “So think! Think about all of the questions I have asked tonight! Think! Have you answered them honestly? Think! Do you understand what I’m truly asking?”

Jack was becoming agitated so she deliberately took a step back. Jack let her eyes slip closed as she took a few deep breathes. Her hands became tight fists by her side that she slowly released.

Only when she was calm did she continue, “I’m leaving now. If you believe that your answers have been 100 percent honest, if you believe that I will like the answers to my latest questions, come and find me. Know this: if you come and find me your life will change and, you might not like all of the changes. You will have no control over this. This is fact. If you do not come and find me the next time I see you I will act as if that is the first time we’ve met. So if you do not come and find me do not mention this night to anyone ever.” Jack opened her eyes and, forced Sephiroph to make eye contact with her, “I want you to think! You need to learn that not everything is a game and, not everything requires rapid answers.” Jack was adamant, “If I see you before for at least an hour is up I will not be impressed at all.”

Jack turned on her foot but, just before she flashed off she whispered to the man and, to the night, “Please impress me.”

With that Jack used Shunpo to flash back to the Buchi Neko. Hiro was still there so, Jack told her and her party that it was safe to leave. Jack took in the back corner. It was the spot that told everyone else that she was waiting for something. Yukai bought her a glass and, a bottle of Jack. Jack poured herself a measure and, forced herself to think. Had she handled that well?

Chimamire no Yuki’s voice was filled with pride, “That was brilliant! And very well done!”

Sephiroph's bright blue eyes widened into orbs the moment Jack snapped at him over his lack of seriousness. He stepped back about a foot and listened without interrupting her questions and stern remarks. Every word she said hit home with him- especially when she declared her Captain rank. He'd realized he had been treating her without respect and he felt the singe of her words worse than a burn.

"I..." Sephiroph started but was cut off by Jack giving him a time limit on his answer. She then flashed away from him in the blink of an eye and left him in awe and ache. Sephiroph backed up until his back hit a medium-sized pine behind him, and then slid down its length until he was sitting on his rear at the base of the tree; just looking at the spot where she had once been while her questions swarmed through his head.

Shakunetsu made a soft snort and he knew she was shaking her head yet again as she had before. She was disappointed, that much he knew was true. In fact, he was disappointed in himself the same. How would he have expected to gain respect without giving it in the first place? A foolish thought he had in thinking he would be admired by the very person he should have been admiring and even fearing from the start.

'Think over her questions for as long as possible, Sephiroph. There needs to be a change in your perspective and with the way you treat people. You are not the only one with a life and you are most certainly not the strongest of them all. Today you have been given the chance of a lifetime and you're letting it slip through your fingers like you let everything else that finds its way into them. Be a man- a respectable man that knows limits and when it is time to be serious. It is time to stop being a child and move on.' Shakunetsu told him a bit less sternly than before but still in a disappointed tone.

Sephiroph clenched his fists at his sides and closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting the questions roll once more through his mind.

"Can I follow orders...? Can I be trusted to bring back comrades and myself? Have I answered every question honestly? Do I...understand?" He repeated aloud and tried to come up with an answer to every one of them.

Yes. He could follow orders when needed, he presumed. If it meant saving the lives of others and/or making a difference, he would follow any order. To make amends for all his mistakes in the past and to prevent any others from feeling the pain life could deal out in a matter of moments. If he had to give such orders he could do it. Through the consequences, he could come out strong in the end and if not, give his own life so the greater mass of good could live. It may not happen- but it was a possibility when joining the ranks of Shinigami.

The next question- Could he bring back comrades and himself? He thought this one over for the least amount of time. His comrades' lives were just as important as his own and he would defend them as if they were so. Leaving one behind or letting one be sacrifice was not an option in his mind.

One of the most important questions came next- possibly the second most important following the last. This took the most thought of them all. He went over every single question she had asked that he could remember and verified all of them with his answers. He had answered everything honestly to the extent where he did not give long, thought-out answers however. He could have answered them much better but in the long run they had been truthful. He would not lie about all she had asked. He was a terrible liar in the first place.

Last but not least, Sephiroph pondered whether or not he understood what she was saying and asking. The questions she had been asking seemed to be like recruitment questions. This much he had figured out. Possibly a higher position like fourth seat because of the inclination about giving orders. He understood that much and when he did, he wished he had not made such a fool out of himself. That was no way to impress a potential future Captain. His apology would have to be one of historic proportion, he thought.

Sitting there pondering over these answers had taken up a bulk of his time- around half an hour to be precise. He hadn't even noticed where time had gone. Slowly Sephiroph reached up and grabbed a low branch above to pull himself back to his feet. With a nervous sigh, he began to walk in the direction she had used Shunpo to go when she left him to himself those thirty-some minutes ago. Sephiroph would not rush back. He would take his time and walk while making note of all he'd done wrong so he could improve himself. Meeting this Jack person had brought something out in him- something that he'd not seen in a long time. The Sephiroph that had a kind demeanor despite all of his flirtatious, devious ways. The one that knew when to be serious and when it was okay to slack off a little.

Minutes passed and the walk seemed to take hours. He'd not walked this long in a very long time; not since he used to take long walks in the Human World with Raika. In the Seireitei he could always just use Shunpo to get wherever he wanted as fast as he needed. It was nice to walk like this in a way, it gave him time to think over his answers more and how Jack would react when he got there.

Finally, just as he reached the hour mark, Sephiroph pushed through the door of the Buchi Neko with a brand new look of determination in his eyes. He paid no attention to anyone as he walked in despite their looks and searched only for a redhead with the kind of blue eyes that were always calculating and searching. When he did spot the locks of red, they were in a back corner of the bar across from him. Sephiroph let out the breath he had not known he'd been sucking in and carefully walked to the woman sitting in the corner.

When he reached Jack he looked at her for but a moment before properly and respectfully bending down on his knee and looking down at the floor for a few seconds while he spoke. "Captain Mallory of Division Three, I have come to state my sincere apology and extend a 'thank you' as well as answer some questions." Sephiroph said, his voice serious and sincere. He looked up at her and let his piercing gaze meet hers, his lips in a flat line rather than his playful smiles and grins he'd had before.

"First I'd like to address that I can follow orders despite it seeming that I cannot. This is the truth. Though I would like to take orders from you- the one I am still amazed with thanks to our battle back in the woods. Your abilities far surpass what I've seen as well as your wisdom. This wisdom and guidance I assume would be reflected through your orders when needed." Sephiroph told her, keeping his voice down about the battle they'd had.

"Second, I do believe I could bring my comrades and myself back alive. If that means taking desperate measures than so be it. If it means being hated for not letting one battle alone or become a sacrifice, then I am ready to carry the burden of hatred if it means I must."

"Lastly, I do understand all you've been asking me. It took me awhile through my bullheaded ways to realize but when I finally did, I knew I had to apologize and change my ways. I treated you terribly. No- I treated everyone terribly. Like they were objects that could be used or 'targets' that could be landed. They are neither. They are people. We are people and we are to be treated as so. It is sad that I had to come to this conclusion so late in my life but at least I did at some point. You are the one who helped me reach it. That is why I am completely honest with you. I... don't know why but I trust you more than most that I know. Not the most I've ever felt trust towards, but it is a start for me. A new thing I've yet to fully learn but have began to in your short midst." Sephiroph stayed in his place on his knee, giving her the most respect he'd given to a person he'd wronged. He hadn't thought about impressing her this whole time, only of making right a terrible wrong.

'...I can truly say that I am proud.' Shakunetsu approved simply, causing Sephiroph to almost blush. She was not the type to approve of him before this moment. It warmed him to the core to hear it.

Jack did not look at Sephiroph as she made sure to pay attention to his every word. In reality it was his actions that surprised her more than anything. It told her more than he probably intended to tell her. Jack forced herself to remain impassive. Yes, this was the type of man she wanted to be her Lieutenant.

It became difficult to pay attention when he called her wise. Chimamire no Yuki broke out into hysterical laughter at that. Jack had to bite her lip to focus on what Sephiroph was saying. It wasn’t long before she tasted blood.

After he finished Jack remained silent. She needed to think before speaking. This was delicate; Jack couldn’t afford mistakes. She forced herself to breathe slow and deep breaths. The silence between them started to drag on. How the hell was she supposed to address everything that need addressing?

Jack knew the entire bar was watching and listening. Even though everybody was chattering their real attention was on the two blue-eyed personages. It hadn’t helped that Sephiroph had made quite an entrance. A few of the quicker ones had probably figured out what had happened or, at least most of it.

Jack fiddled with the glass of Jack that she had poured herself an hour ago. Then she threw it back with practice ease to hide the sudden smirk. Since everybody was already watching she might as well be dramatic.

Jack regained her serious demeanor as she let the glass clink on the table, “Get up! Seated Officers don’t grovel unless they’re kiss-ups; respectful yes, groveling no. I was not under the impression that you were a kiss-up Lieutenant. Was I wrong?” Finally Jack turned to look at Sephiroph, “Go order what you want from the bar. Tell Yukai to put it on my tab.” Jack was wearing a soft smile, “It will give me more time to think; which is something I currently desperately need.”

While he was at the bar Sephiroph would be approached by two men. One of them was a blonde from Division Three and, the other was bald and from Division Four.

The blonde would speak first, ”Congrats on your promotion! I’m José. I look forward to working with you. But if you’ll take it we’ll give you some invaluable advice.”

Then bald man would speak up, ”First: under no circumstances call her Jackie. Call her Jack, Mallory or, Captain. Hell, call her slut, whore or, prostitute before you call her Jackie. Anything but Jackie. Second: Don’t ask about her past.”

It would be the blonde’s turn, ”She won’t ask about yours and, if you ask about hers she’ll tell you to mind your own business. Oh, she’ll be nice about it but, she won’t take any arguments about it. Next: She never forces her attentions on anyone. Not like Tanaka. I trust you know what we mean about that. Yes she’s a nymphomaniac but, she’s not a monster.”

This would be the last statement form the bald man, ”Finally we give an assessment of her character. Yes she’s the biggest slut in the Seireitei; there’s no denying that. But even though she contests this; the fact is that she is one of the best people in the Gotei 13.”

This would be the last time they blonde would speak, ”Agreed. It’s nice to meet you Lieutenant.”

The two men would push away from the bar as Yukai came up take the New Lieutenant’s order. Yukai was holding a dusty bottle and two fine crystal tumblers

Yukai would whisper to avoid drawing Jack’s attention, ”If you are to be the Boss’s Lieutenant you deserve to know something. I only discovered this after many years of being her barkeeper. She hides it ridiculously well and, even though I look for it I can only rarely see it. I’m not even sure she fully comprehends it. But the truth is Miss Jack hates herself. Like downright loathing. I don’t know why but, I know it’s true. You can see it in her eyes when the circumstances are just right and, she thinks no one’s looking. I’m not going to tell you what those circumstances are; you’ll have to figure it out yourself.” Yukai would be insistence, ”I’m trusting you with this information. Use it wisely.” Yuka would then press the bottle and glasses into Sephiroph’s hands, ”Take this. She has a particular fondness for this vintage. I think there are some bittersweet memories attached to it. If she thinks you like it as well it will help you connect. So for at least tonight pretend.” Then Yukai would give him a warning, ”Give it a few minutes before going back over.”

Meanwhile Jack was not aware that these interactions were happening. She was desperately trying to organize her thoughts. She was beginning to think she needed to write it down. She didn’t have pen or paper so she began to look across the bar in desperation. She smiled in relief when she saw a glasses wearing female form Division Five. She had peach fuzz black hair and a bound chest. She was known for always having writing implements

Jack called out, “Hey Kyo!” When the girl looked up Jack asked, “Can I borrow pen and paper. Well just the pen. I need to keep the paper.”

A while back a Hollow had ripped out Kyo’s vocal cords so she did call back. However she did smile as she reached into her pockets. Kyo tossed the pen like a dagger that Jack plucked out of the air. Kyo riffled through a memo pad to determine that all the pages were blank. Since it would be a less elegant projectile Kyo handed it to the nearest person and, it made its way to Jack.

For a moment she was confused as to why Kyo hadn’t just brought her the items. Then she remembered the fact the Kyo and, her girlfriend were her to celebrate their fifth anniversary. Jack’s forehead made contact with the table. How could she have been so stupid?

Kyo’s girlfriend called out, ”Hey! Don’t worry about it Jack! We forgive you!”

Jack smiled a blinding smile at the couple as the notepad reached her. Jack turned her attention to writing down her thoughts. She needed to tell Sephiroph she was sorry for bringing up his wife. Then they needed to discuss what Jack expected from her Lieutenant and, what Sephiroph expected from his Captain. Finally Jack needed to get into Sephiroph’s pants.

Chimamire no Yuki scowled, “And you wondered why I laughed when he thought you wise.”

Jack added that to her growing list of things to be discussed. She needed to clear up any misconceptions he had about her. Her back was itching again. Maybe she would have him patch her up first.

Final thoughts: Damnit! This is going to be harder than I thought.

Yet again Sephiroph was left with a surprised look on his face. He quickly stood to both feet and looked down to her, listening to what she had to say about his groveling and.... Lieutenant position? "Wait, wha-" Sephiroph started but was then told to go get a drink so she could think.

Sephiroph did not finish his sentence, quickly turning away so he could walk up to the bar. He was still reeling over the fact she had called him Lieutenant when two men walked up to him. Sephiroph turned to them and couldn't help but smile at their congratulations.

After they'd gotten through their long lines of advice, Sephiroph blinked a few times. Wow. That was a bit to remember- but it was probably easy to do at that. He'd never once thought of calling her Jackie and would avert to ever having that urge so he didn't get killed in the process. He knew not of the reason she hated the nickname but would not question it either. He enjoyed having his head attached to his body.

'Lieutenant.' There was that word again. He had not expected such a high position. It filled him with glee at this point now that he realized what it meant. Just like that, out of nowhere he was in the Gotei Thirteen. A part of who he'd been trying to join for so long now without answer and on one night he was put in a position Central would never have given him due to his traitor past.

Sephiroph was jerked back into reality and from his thoughts when Yukai came up with a bottle and two tumblers that looked much different than the ones he'd received earlier at the bar. Yet again Sephiroph's words were not needed as the bar tender started to say his piece. It seemed to surprise Sephiroph to hear the news of Jack hating herself. He had not known her long enough to detect the hatred and he wondered why she would have such distaste for herself.

He could not ask this straightforwardly- not after hearing that he could not ask about her past. No, it would take time and would be saved for another night. He would get to know her better first. She was practically a stranger to him still but he wanted to change that. Getting better acquainted with his new Captain would take time but he was determined to do so no matter how long it took. To get to the bottom of her seemingly endless mystery.

Sephiroph peered back over to where Jack was sitting, hearing her name called out from the crowd at just the same time. She was now writing things down on a sheet of paper so he would not bother her. Instead he simply watched for a few moments, just thinking about the whole night in perspective.

'Lieutenant.. it has a nice ring to it.' Shakunetsu said to Sephiroph softly, seeming to purr with satisfaction.

'What's got you all happy? Are you just excited because I'm at the rank where I can attempt to learn Bankai without Central on my a**?' Sephiroph smirked to himself as he thought. He knew that was why Shakunetsu was so pleased with this new position. It was not for Sephiroph's benefit, but for her's. Sure she could be selfless at times but when it came to power, she was a bit like him.

'When you do think of learning Bankai, you know where I'll be. This should be quite some time from now, however. It can take years to perfect and develop a Bankai. Take many until them to figure yourself out. Revenge can wait.'

Finally with that, Sephiroph took the dusty bottle in one hand and the two tumblers in the other, pushing off from the bar and walking back over to the corner where Jack was sitting. Sephiroph slid into the seat across from her and set the bottle down in between them as well as the tumblers.

"Hello, Miss Captain, ma'am." He said, his mood obviously brightened. "A little bird told me this was your favorite. Thought I'd bring some over to celebrate and to talk about how in hell I managed to impress you so much that you gave me a Lieutenant position." He joked but then went back to a more serious tone.

"Sorry. It's hard to stay serious when you've just been called a Lieutenant and have been promoted within such a short period of time. I had most definitely not been expecting this on tonight of all nights. Or...any night for that matter." Sephiroph explained, reaching up and running a hand through his hair; a nervous tick he'd developed not long ago. He never even really noticed it.

Jack laced her fingers under her chin as she considered the man in front of her. Yukai must like that boy if he was giving him advice about Jack’s drinking prefences. Jack was left to wonder what else to barkeeper had told Sephiroph.

Jack was smiling as she told him, “It is fine to be lax in certain situations. In case you have forgotten at the beginning of this night I was trying to get into your pants. The trick is to know when those times are.” Jack laughed, “Don’t ask me when those times are. I have a hard time figuring that out most of the time.” Jack’s smile faltered as she said the next bit, “Before we go too far I owe you an apology. I will not apologize for trying to kill you because I’m not sorry for that and, I don’t lie. However I attempted to hurt you using your long-gone loved one. For that I am truly sorry.”

Jack quickly tore out the pages she had been writing on and, folding them with sharp, crisp folds. She tried to ignore the liquor. Before the Seireitei only one person had treated her with kindness. That was what he drank. Then he died to give her five more minutes to run. At times Jack felt a crushing weight on her chest. If he was here she knew that he would be disappointed,

Jack considered the bottle with a sad look in her eyes. Her right hand cupped the elbow of her other arm. The hand on her left arm cupped the back of her neck. She wasn’t quite lost in memories. Her gaze didn’t leave the bottle.

Jack’s voice was soft as she told Sephiroph, “It’s not my favorite. I don’t have an alcohol preference. But I will admit that I tend to drink this on special occasion. I guess a new Lieutenant qualifies.”

Her right hand reached out and brushed the dust of the bottle. Why did Yukai do this tonight? He had to know that Jack needed all her wits about her.

Jack’s attention was still on the bottle, “You know I just realized; I don’t know your last name. What is it?”

Jack gave her head a shake before smiling brightly. Tonight was not the night to worry about the past. She had a new Lieutenant and, the future looked bright.

Jack turned her attention to Sephiroph, “How crazy is that? I made you my Lieutenant but, I don’t even know your full name!”

Sephiroph waited for Jack to reply, watching her as she moved to lace her fingers under her chin. He leaned back in his seat a bit and crossed his arms comfortably over his chest, feeling a sharp jab as she brought up how she'd spoke of Raika. He tried to hide the fact that remembering that sent an ache to his heart, hiding it well for that matter with his shrug and smile.

"Do not worry about it. It was good practice, in fact. Not letting my emotions get to me in battle is one of the few tricks to winning that have to be mastered with time. If I'd let it get to me then we would not be speaking at this moment and I'd probably be dead. I'm actually in a way glad you brought it up. That way I could test myself and my emotions." Sephiroph explained and let his eyes fall to the bottle, looking it over to try and read what it was. The dust made that near impossible so he didn't bother after a few moments.

When he did look back up, Jack had shifted positions again and her eyes seemed sad as they looked upon the very bottle he'd just been gazing at. What was this sadness? Did the drink remind her of something? He would not ask but made note to find out at some point. Maybe he would have to keep bringing her the same drink from time to time until she told him by some miracle. Maybe not. Probably not.

"New Lieutenant. I like those words quite a bit. I know I'd drink to that." He said and then watched as Jack dusted off the dirty bottle. Maybe he could read it by now. As he was looking over it again to get the name for future reference, he was interrupted by her words. Sephiroph looked up and was about to speak but he then saw her bright smile and for just a moment was at a loss for words. He couldn't tell if it was genuine or not but it warmed him to see her smile.

"Crazy indeed. I cannot believe I forgot to tell you my full name when you asked. Erm... Don't laugh though. It's sort of... conceited if you know the meaning." Sephiroph paused and his face turned a light red tint for just a moment.

"Bazyli. Sephiroph Bazyli. It's not my birth name but don't tell anyone." Sephiroph said and then quickly, as if to change the subject, reached for a tumbler and picked it up carefully. He put on a big, bright smile and held it out to her. "Let's not put this fine drink to waste, yeah? Have some!" He exclaimed and then set the glass down right in front of her so she could pour into it if she wished to drink some.

"By the way, what all do you need me to do as your Lieutenant? I'd been on quite a long hiatus from the Seireitei until recently so I'm not too sure about all of the ranks anymore. Plus I'd never actually been a part of the Gotei Thirteen so I never really had to think about all that was expected of me and such. It seems a lot of responsibility but, I'm sure I can take it."

(Ooc: Considering I love it too, no. Or maybe we're both crazy! By the way, it's almost three in the morning so I think I'm gonna catch some z's.)

Jack tried the words out, “Lieutenant Bazyli.” Jack grinned, “I quite like the sound of that!” Jack sighed, “Maybe you haven’t realized but, most of Central 46 and the nobility don’t like me due to my rather lax morals. I feel it fair to warn you that most of them will simply see your appointment as one of my crazy whims. I assure that is not entirely true; I do have other reasons for making you my Lieutenant. I just don’t know what those are.”

Jack laughed as she slide her feet on to the bench across from her. Sephiroph could still get out because her feet were on the inside of the booth. Then Jack pulled the bottle towards her and slowly took the top of it. She poured only enough of the drink into her tumbler to count as two, maybe three swallows. Then she reached across the table and, poured her new Lieutenant enough to actually count as a drink. Finally she placed the glass down.

Jack continued her discussion, “I expect you to follow my orders on the battlefield. There are times outside of battle when you’ll need to follow orders but, for the most part I’m rather lax. You have to be capable of paperwork and, willing to continue to training.” Jack fingered her glass, “Most importantly I need you to be unafraid to tell me when I am wrong and, you need to do so in way that helps me improve.” Jack’s eyes got hard as she forced Sephiroph to make eye contact, “Not during battle! There is no time during battle to question orders.” Jack smiled to relieve the tension, “That’s about it! Any questions!”

Jack drank about half of the liquid in her glass. It reminded her of fall days. Not the best season but, it was way better than summer. Jack hated summer.

Jack asked Sephiroph a question, “What about you? What expectations do you have for your Captain?”

Sephiroph shifted in his seat and instead of lazily leaning back like he had been doing before, he leaned forwards and placed an elbow on the table, resting his chin in the palm of his hand while he did so. Slowly he reached for his tumbler and took a nice, long swig of the liquid inside. It gave him a warm feeling- much different than his usual heated taste of Whiskey. It filled him with this warmth and he sure as hell hoped it wasn't strong because that warmth could be a sign of him getting tipsy. He could hold most liquor but when it got to a certain time of night and he'd already drank, it was difficult.

"Let 'em talk, eh? Who are they to judge your whims? You're your own person and Central doesn't own you." Sephiroph said but left his mouth agape as if he were going to add to it. It took him a moment before he did but when he did, he sighed. "Wait. Haven't you heard, Sephiroph? Central owns everyones' a**." He said in a huff and set his tumbler down in front of him.

He eyed the drink for a few more moments and then looked up to his new Captain after hearing her answer his question. "Sounds fair enough, Cap'n. I'll be sure not to bother you during a fight. I wouldn't dream of it anyways. The paperwork I can take care of- even if it is quite a tedious activity. The training part.. I'm definitely down for. Shakunetsu is already bothering me about learning Bankai."

'I said after many years of getting to know your Division and getting stronger.' Shakunetsu interjected but Sephiroph didn't explain this aloud.

Sephiroph had no problem keeping eye contact the whole time she spoke, it was natural to him to keep eye contact. In fact... his eye contact seemed..too focused.

'Damnit!' Sephiroph thought and quickly averted his gaze, turning to the side of the wall and lifting his left hand to his left eye. He winced and shook his head while he gritted his teeth and repeated the process he'd done earlier when he had used his 'special' ocular powers. He made a soft grunt and then pulled his hand away, wiping away the blood that fell like a tear from his eye. Every time he did this it took its toll and his eyes now seemed a bit more tired than usual. This lasted only momentarily, however, and he soon looked back to his Captain with the same piercing stare.

"Sorry about that.. Forgot to be 'normal'." He said with a small chuckle and brought his hands down into his lap rather than go back to the position he had been in with his elbow on the table.

"Expectations...Hmm.." He thought aloud and chewed on the inside of his cheek for a moment. "Well, they obviously have to be strong. In your case, that's not a problem because I already know you are strong. They have to be willing to negotiate if their plan has holes that need to be filled or fixed if there is a problem but if they can already make good plans that's a bonus because then that won't happen. Also, I would like some help training if that is alright. I always like when people superior to me help as a sparring buddy or act as help while developing new abilities. That's honestly all I can think of at this very moment." Sephiroph said and lifted a hand back up to take his tumbler. He took the glass and lifted it to his lips, taking the last swig in and swallowing it all in one gulp.

'Man I hope I don't start slurring my words...'

Jack nodded, “Negotiation, of course. I’m not the smartest person so I’m not very good at planning. I expect and want your advice. As for training.” Jack smiled brightly, “I would be honored to assist you. However I think we’ll hold off on Ban Kai for now. I want to get to know you better first.” Jack leaned forward, “One last thing. Within Division Three honesty is paramount. Lie to others but, do not lie to members of Division Three and do not lie to me.” Jack’s eyes got hard, “If you do I will cut out your tongue to ensure that you do not lie to me again.”

Jack leaned back and finished her drink. Now that preliminaries were over Jack could get back to trying seduce Sephiroph. The only problem was it looked like he was close to being drunk.

So Jack told him “I’m not sleeping with you if you’re drunk. And I was hoping to sleep with you now that we’ve cleared up the basic parts of our new relationship.” Jack shrugged =, “Not that Head-Captain Niwa will be happy to find out that I’ve charmed my new Lieutenant to my bed. He’ll be even less happy to find out that I introduced myself to you with the intent to bed you then made you my Lieutenant.” Jack sighed, “I suppose I should warn you that people will claim that you sleep with me to get your new position. I would never do this. Yes I enjoy sex but, I would never give someone a position for any reason less than merit in the field required. Still people like to talk and make assumptions.” Jack grinned, “Not Division Three but, I wouldn’t tell them about that eye of yours. They might see it as a cheat.”

Then Jack leaned across the table and, pecked Sephiroph’s lips. One moment her lips were on his. In the next her tongue brushed his lips. In the next Jack was pulling away and grinning like the cat who got the cream.

Jack whispered, “You taste good Lieutenant. Very good. Should we see how well you can handle orders?

Unless the blonde continued to drink it wouldn’t be long before this cat got the canary to.

Sephiroph nodded as she agreed with letting him negotiate with plans when they were set and for helping him train. He knew for a fact he'd need this kind of help since he'd never actually had any before. It would be nice to not be faced with death every time he wanted to get stronger. Before now when he lived in the human world he took out hollows and Arrancars to gain more power and to protect those around him. He had been strong from the beginning but the Arrancars he had taken out in the human world were to be thanked for him learning his Shikai abilities. Otherwise, he'd probably still be a mere grunt.

"I've a feeling you're not lying. Heh, see what I did there?" He chuckled, his voice deep and heavy, and then went back to being more serious. "You need not fear. I won't lie to you. I try not to lie to anybody unless sometimes it's an enemy and is part of my tactics. Though you are not my enemy so you've nothing to fear." He assured her truthfully.

Somehow the conversation then turned to a more flirty topic- one he'd been on for most of the night. Getting in each others' pants.

Sephiroph nodded to his tumbler and then turned in his seat to face the other side of the bar. He stood up just slightly and shouted to Yukai. "Oi! Yukai! Have you any bread? Something that soaks up alcohol?" He asked the man and then motioned his hand to the table. "If so, I'd owe you one hell of a debt right about now!" He told the bar tender and then sat back down, waiting to see if the man would bring anything or not.

Sephiroph was not drunk, thankfully though. His drunk side was far less than pretty and was seemingly the complete opposite of him. He was all lovey-dovey whenever this happened and was ready to admit his undying love to anyone who would listen. Sephiroph hated even the thought. Yet that was how he'd met Raika. She had felt sorry for him in fact and took him under her wing for the night so he didn't embarrass himself further. Oh so very romantic.

Sephiroph turned his attention back to Jack and slightly leaned against the table so he could be closer to her. "People do talk. The trick is to not listen in the end. There can be no talk without an ear to listen to the words. Ignorance can be pure, dignified bliss when used correctly." Sephiroph told her and gazed into her bright blue eyes. They reminded him of early nights in the winter just before the sky turned pitch black. Instead, the sky would turn to shades of bright and dark blue that faded into the blackness until midnight came. Those were the best kind of nights.

"Thank you by the way. The eye I normally don't like to show people unless I plan on them ending up in their grave but you were too strong to not use it on. Plus I had a feeling you'd like it." He said with a smirk and then watched as Jack leaned in close. Sephiroph's eyes automatically closed as she pecked his lips and her tongue brushed across them. The simple action made him want far too much more and when he opened his eyes, there was a new determination in them. Not one like he had during their battle but one of a sort of lust. He did not try to hide this though he felt the urge to. He knew she wanted the same thing from him so there was no need to hide it in the first place.

"Handle orders where? In the battlefield or in bed? Heh, I'm sure we'd have quite the time with the latter." Sephiroph whispered back. "I, for one, am curious on how well you enforce such orders."
