Fido began sorting through the pile of collected food, saving the more appetizing bits for Jasper. Well, maybe taking one or two of the better bits for himself wouldn't be so bad. As soon as he finished, he barked toward his master and then began to eat from his own pile.

The food wasn't appetizing at all, he even got sick of eating from dumpsters many times. There were even days he would go hungry unless they went to a soup kitchen. Jasper was about to munch on a little piece of food and gave a soft sigh. "I'm so sick of living like this...." he said softly, meeting his companion's gaze for a moment before continuing to munch. "So what should we do today?"

Fido finished his scraps and waited for his master. "What should we do? I don't know," he snuffed and then yawned. The collie then stood and started to shuffle as he had done yesterday. "Street performing again?" But he was still tired from that. It might not go as well today.

Jasper gave a small smile and pat Fido's head. "Nah, we had enough of that yesterday." he said softly, finishing his food and standing to look down the street. "Not much going on today I don't think." he said softly. "Maybe we should head home and try to dry out that mattress."

Fido whined at that. He didn't want to go home yet. "Maybe we should stay in a shelter tonight," he thought. Mattresses didn't dry out that easily, he remembered. They were too big and full of fluff.

Jasper knew better than to even try to dry the mattress out, it was so big and usually when it was rainy the mattress didn't completely dry out for weeks. A shelter was better but they would be lucky if they were accepted, it was usually first come first served and the shelter already opened. They usually filled up quick too. "Come on Fido...lets get a move on and figure something out for the night. At best we'll just sleep on the ground." He said softly, though that would be a painful reminder of how they spent their first few months being homeless.

Fido went up to Jasper and licked his hand before going to the alley entrance so they could leave. Maybe they could make it to the shelter on time. If not the two of them, then maybe Jasper could get there. Fido didn't mind sleeping outside. "Let's go!" he barked.

Jasper gave a small smile, it almost looked like Fido was a puppy again with the energy he had this morning. "Alright, alright. Don't need to tell me twice." he said with a small laugh, running after his friend to catch up and playing a little race with the four legged companion. Soon they reached the alley they called home but not only was everything sopping wet but also ransacked. "Looks like someone found our home." he said with a tone of disappointment, that was a first for them both. "I guess we gotta find a new home now." Jasper became monotonous this time, it was like he was reliving their first day living on the streets.

Fido whimpered at the idea. What new home could they get? It wasn't like people gave away homes for free. "Maybe we can find a roof for the next home. Would be good," he thought, preparing to exit the alley. He barked, knowing that they needed to find a place before it got too dark. A homeless boy out in the open was usually a dead homeless boy. Aside from that, Fido didn't know if he would have the energy to stay up all night guarding his master.

Jasper remained standing for a moment until he got down to his knees, energy leaving his body and mind to find a new home for the both of them. "This isn't fair...." he said softly, hating the fact that they had to pick up and start their lives over somewhere new, even the mattress was torn to shreds and the contents of the dumpster was all over the ground. "We're good people...why do we have to be kicked around like this?"

When Jasper didn't move, Fido returned to his side. No, it wasn't fair at all. His master did nothing to deserve this life, but neither of them could do anything. "Jasper, c'mon, we need to go," he whined. "It's no longer safe here."

Jasper gave a soft sigh, he wasn't particularly happy living this life. In fact he was a bit depressed on a good day but his dog made life bearable at least. That was good enough for now. He stood up at the sound from behind him and decided it was best to burn his bridge with this alley. "Come on....this time you get to pick our new home." he said with a bit of a forced smile.

Fido barked excitedly and quickly headed out of the alley, though he made sure Jasper was close behind. "We should have a roof this time!" he said, though he knew his master would not be able to understand him. The closest place to a new home was the bridge they had been under before, but it was a bit too chilly. Perhaps they could find someplace warmer.

Jasper watched Fido scamper off, there was that puppy-like energy again. He looked toward the sun and saw that it was almost high in the sky, just about noon he guessed. "You know what? We'll find a new home later. I think we should go to the park.....maybe find a ball?" he said with a suggestive tone of voice, knowing that would get his friend excited. "Come on, it's been a long time since we were just a kid and his dog. Lets go to the park boy!" he called, running down the street to lead the way and finding an abandoned ball once they got there. "You ready for the ball?" he asked excitedly.

Fido had stopped in his tracks when Jasper had mentioned a ball. It had been a long time since they played with one. With a furiously wagging tail, the collie followed his master to the park and, once the boy had found a ball, would have jumped for joy if he was younger. "Throw it already!" he barked playfully and impatiently.
