Megaera ran and ran. She didn't see or hear any signs of pursuit, not that she allowed herself much time to look. She knew that it couldn't be that easy, but still she clung to hope that she might be faster. She was no racer, but she could definitely outpace some of the other Padmapani members. She clattered around an exceptionally large tree, and then heard the voice.

She let out an involuntary whinny of fear. There the kalona was! His pale face and smiling eyes made her stomach churn with dread. He was faster than she was, there was no denying it. That left her with one choice. "Y-you stay away from me!" her voice was more shrill than strong, but still she whirled around to face him. She lowered her horn and pointed it directly at the monster's heart, but didn't dare to advance. Oh how she wished she had attended Hayagriva's self-defense classes. Such wishes were always too late...

Zelcion was pleased when the mare let out her fearful cry. He was less pleased when she did something unexpected. She stopped and pivoted aiming her horn at his chest. Zelcion was too close to come to a proper stop without impaling himself so he turned sharply and came around in a small circle to allow himself room to stop. He found a place in front of her and looked her over.

"This is your last stand. Make it count." He said deathly calm as he slowly moved closer to her. She was scared. It was in her voice and in her eyes. She was no warrior. This was no challenge. Idly Zelcion swayed his sharp, spaded tail back and forth. He could bite her, rip out her throat and make a great bloody scene but he didn't have any interest in soiling his coat. He could slit her open just as easily with his tail and it would spare him the mess.

Megaera stepped back. The tip of her horn shook and wavered with fear. She breathed so fast that she could hardly focus and her vision fogged. Padmapani. She needed to stay strong so she could return home. She had to survive so she could go back and rejoin those that were not her blood, but had become her family.

Her breathing steadied, and so did her aim. "Stay away!" She stabbed her horn in his direction, a threat rather than an actual attack. "Stay away!!" It was somewhere between a battle cry and a desperate shriek. Her body told her to fight or flee, and fleeing was no longer an option.

She was not making it count at all. "How disappointing." He muttered watching the unicorn jab pointlessly at the air crying out for him to stay back. What good would any of this do? She wasn't actually attacking him, but he would definitely attack her.

Zelcion stepped in quickly, with his body angled to the side, swinging his tail at the same moment. The spaded end bit into her neck and slid through the flesh leaving a neat red line in it's wake. There were lovely thick veins along the throat. It wouldn't be as quick of a death as the one his brother had clearly secured but at least his coat wouldn't be messed up. He trotted out of striking range from the mare and flicked his tail a few times to fling drops of blood off.

All that was left was for her to bleed herself to death.

She didn't have long. Megaera could hardly feel the cut, but knew she could fight no more. She fell to the ground, world spinning in and out of focus in a jumble of light and colors. Amidst the blur, a figure stood out. It was a mare she had never seen before, and yet was very familiar. She was beautiful, with a red and gold mane and hooves that made it look like she walked upon flowers. Though her lips didn't move, the kind look in her eyes said "Come with me. Come with me, Megaera."

Megaera did, following in the path of the mare that walked on lotuses.

The kalonas were mostly watching in the direction of the last captive, their ears straining to pick up the sounds of the doomed mare and her pursuer. Some of the captives stared in that direction as well, with fear, loathing, or some mix of the two. Verity had joined them a moment before, until she realized there was something else she could do. Now, while their captors were mostly distracted. Now was the time that she prayed.

She muttered under her breath the prayers and blessings that she knew, poetry and words ancient beyond memory. It was too quiet for even those surrounding her to hear anything but hoarse whispers, but hearing was not necessary for the prayers to take hold. She called upon the spirits and her own angeni powers to bless her fellow captives. To make them faster, to better outrun their pursuers. To make them stronger, to fight back if their speed failed them. She could feel her own energy flagging with each line of incantation, but she had armor and training to protect her. The others did not, so she would do what she could for them while she was able to.

A soft glow began to surround the group. She just hoped it was enough to save even one of them.

The idea of a kill ring to train Xelloss's brood had been an intriguing one that promised hours of entertainment. Xelloss had let the first two go as a solitary hunt which hadn't thrilled Phibrizzo at all. The deaths had been quick and far enough away that he hadn't really been able to hear anything. They didn't even scream with their final breaths, which was a shame. If Lord Ruby-Eyes had left him in charge of this little venture their guests would be stinking of fear and desperation by now instead he could still see some hope in some of them.

One in particular seemed determined to resist the grip of terror. Phibrizzo was familiar enough with angeni to recognize their blessed magic when he saw it. Unfortunately for angeni he was not repelled by it like a skinwalker might be. He was a perfect weapon against their silly ways.

"None of that now." He said with a child's voice as he "appeared" next to the white angeni, his mouth right beside her jugular. "I wouldn't want to kill you myself and spoil the fun... but I will~" He would stay there to make certain that she stopped, once she did he would probably shrink and "disappear" once again. It was just so hard for people to notice him when he was the size of an insect. It made startling them and sneak attacks so much easier.

Verity's mouth snapped shut and she inhaled a whistling gasp through narrowed nostrils. Where there had been nothing there was now an eery child-voiced threat. Her prayers stopped immediately, concentration broken. Out there in the killing fields she had a chance of survival. If the flutterlona attacked her while she was bound, she'd be slaughtered like an animal.

She said nothing, but the dissipation of the ethereal glow was enough to demonstrate that her magic had ceased.

"We can release her last," drawled Xelloss, coming back over again to watch the confrontation. "But for the rest, I think it's time for the main event." They had enjoyed their first two easy kills. Now it was time to up the difficulty level for the fledgling mazoku. They wouldn't improve if they were just hunting down terrified mares one at a time, after all.

"You first, I think." He looked at the pawed one, Zamiel, as he said that. He would be a real challenge, and releasing him first would give him an added advantage. "As for the rest," he smiled as he looked over the various captives, some frightened and some defiant, "It doesn't really matter."

Xelloss wasn't even making a pretense of asking him for directives now and Rezo was just as glad for it. He was tired in playing a role in this gluttonous exercise. His appearance was impassive as captive after captive were released and spurred off into the jungle arena, but he was inwardly less placid. To him, there was nothing of value to this carnage. It was base and it was disgusting.

When the final captive, the angeni, dashed away into the wilderness he found himself remembering back to a time when he had respected their breed, sought out their wisdom. Such a long time ago that was. She was not gone long before the final of Xelloss' foul descendants were released after her.

Rezo wondered, how long would he have to stand by and endure this bloodbath carried out in his name?

One by one Verity had watched the others sprint off before her. They carried her blessing with them, what little she had been able to apply before being stopped. When it was finally her turn she did not break her silence, saying nothing before bolting away. Once out of sight she tried her wings again, one last time to see if they could carry her to safety.

Her torn feathers would not grip the air. She was grounded, and knew there would be a pack of kalona after her very very soon. Gritting her teeth, she carried on, thinking to put as much distance between herself and them as possible before the onslaught.

It was exhilarating finally being released to hunt. She'd had to sit on the sidelines listening to her uncle and father enjoy themselves slaughtering the weaklings that had been let loose first. Now it was her turn and she wasn't going after any lame regulars or terrified unicorns, she was after big game. While she wanted to murder the one that had foiled her plans the last time she could work with the other one. She had been released last and was closer anyway.

She could see her through the trees running as fast as she could. Her wings were tattered leaving her earth-bound but Liliel's were whole. Liliel screeched as she charged and leaped into the air spreading her wings as wide as she could to catch the air and let her glide. They were too small for her to fly properly but they let her do some rather impressive jumping that could make her downright unpredictable. She landed in striking range of the mare and swiped at her hide viciously.

"Hey there pretty angeni." She snarled.

Xellra was swift to join the hunt as well. Liliel was faster and able to outpace him, but he kept an eye on her and followed her trail. Xellra hated to admit it, but it would be difficult to kill a lot of these soquili without help. They needed to have some sort of grouping and organization if they wanted to take down the larger prey. He certainly didn't think he could kill the pawed one on his own.

As he approached, he saw that Liliel had the green angeni cornered. Xellra snarled in delight as he ran up alongisde. If he was able to help kill the angeni, that would certainly increase his prestige in the Mazoku!

Verity wheeled around. She wouldn't waste energy in trying to run any further now that she had been spotted. Her armor clanged with the suddenness of her movement and she took heart in the solid feel of it against her hide. She glared at her enemies, resolute and grim, but not afraid. There were two of them now. That wasn't good, but it could be worse.

"Who will fight me first?" she demanded, voice raised in challenge. "Or do you not think yourself able to defeat me in single combat?" She hoped the appeal against their pride would work. Things could go very poorly very quickly if they both attacked her at once..

Liliel rolled her eyes dramatically as Xellra came up beside her. He was disgusting. He looked almost exactly like their grandfather but he was descended from a kirin of all things. That was practically as bad as being an angeni's b*****d. Liliel was a halfbreed too but she was part hippogryph, it wasn't the same as being related to a damn kirin. She wasn't about to let him take her glory.

"Don't flatter yourself pretty. I can kill you easy." Liliel snarled holding her head proudly before prowling forward. "Don't you have somewhere to be?" She growled at her half-uncle to make sure he know that he wasn't wanted here. "Come on pretty angeni, aren't you gonna attack?" The other mare was wearing armor that could be a problem but there were several places left undefended that Liliel could see. She was quite certain that she could strike those easily.
