He turned, looking up and down, and looked to Noah. He gestured he was going a level further down, right under the row of caves they were on, and started to head in the direction back to Noah. He'd just keep going around caves to center around Noah while still leaving Noah plenty nearby to explore on his own.

He had no idea that Noah had encountered any sort of alive seaweed. Even if he had, he would have just gestured that it was fine. The seaweed was more annoying than anything, and a few tugs always made you go free. It was just annoying and, if you didn't monitor your strength and stamina, could only make you more tired and worn.
In the next cave, Melvin pocketed a few more stones and swam out, only to see that Noah was doing well. Very well. Too well.
Melvin would not be upstaged by a newbie just starting out.
Melvin signaled that he was going down a level, and Noah gave him a thumbs up to show that he understood. He hesitated a moment as he watched the older man swim downward. Should he follow? But they hadn't run into trouble again yet, and Melvin was collecting stones with quiet efficiency. They could probably cover more area if they worked separately, and one level was still close enough to help if something popped out at them.
Noah chose another cave on the same level and headed in to explore.
This cave was spacious, and the floor was heaped with pieces of stone. Noah picked through them, finding plenty that were the right size and shape. He gathered a surprising amount before deciding that he'd found all he was going to find in here.

Shafts of light slanted into this cavern, illuminating a thick carpet of seaweed growing on the floor and climbing up the walls. Noah swam down to look among the fronds. They shifted and swayed in the currents, brushing against his arms and legs.
If there were any stones here, he wasn't finding them. He turned to make his way back out. Something eeled around his ankle as he moved, and he glanced back to see that a strand of weed had gotten caught around his foot. He kicked and wiggled a little, trying to ease his way out, and realized abruptly that the weed was tightening and crawling upward. He couldn't yell with the mask over his face, but Laz voiced a deep and bubbling growl as Noah kicked and pulled frantically at the entangling strands squeezing their way up his leg.
A particularly energetic kick ripped him loose. Noah kicked hurriedly out of the cave and turned to stare wide-eyed at the innocuous-looking opening. Guess I can't relax, he said sheepishly to Laz.

Maybe light in the cave was a risk factor for growing weird sea life. But no, hadn't he been in other caves with light in them that hadn't been dangerous? He'd just have to stay alert, Noah decided, and picked another cave.

This cave had nothing waving about in it, and Noah was able to pick up several nice stones. He took another look around before swimming back out. What was it that made this one safe, as compared to others? He probably didn't have enough data to theorize.

Noah surveyed the nearby caves. An indent in the rock wall contained three openings, but all were extremely dark. He'd prefer to avoid that, he decided. He would rather be able to see it coming if something decided he looked like a nice snack.
He chose a cave further out that didn't look too dark.

Another relatively well-lit cavern with bare stone and fallen rocks scattered around the bottom of the cave. Noah wondered what caused that as he sorted through the stones for runestone material. He'd never felt an earthquake on the island, and the currents down here seemed relatively calm. So what caused pieces of stone to break off? He'd see if Melvin knew when they surfaced.
Only one of these stones seemed to be the right size and shape. Noah put it in the bag and swam out to search elsewhere.

His reckless dive into the next cave was luckily rewarded with a large cache of stones. The largest he had seen that day.
Smiling, he started to collect and noticed his bag grow heavier and heavier. Luckily, his bad was sturdy from many dives and a hunter's strength boost helped. Still, he was a little heavier which meant swimming up would be a bit of a pain.
That did not stop him though as he swam out and looked for another cave.
