the less i know

He was too drained to bother making a comment about being his food b***h; he was much too drained for a lot of his usual s**t at the moment, really.

Jack stretched his arms behind his head, wincing. "Yeah," he answered dully. "I don't care what the caf has, just get me something. And a water bottle." He was already trudging back to the cabinets to put someone's file up as he spoke, like a dutiful, giant robot.

neck jut

Leslie scowled, unaware of Jack's design, of his own fate, of anything but his own petty and immediate desires.

step one you say

"Going to be?" he asked, laughing sharply once, wincing as the burn of alcohol cleansed his fortunate unfestered wound. "It wasn't an attempt at my life," Hank (Leslie read his file, peeking at it, looking for a past history), "just trying to feel, man. That's all." He flexed the wounded hand. "Dug all the way down the ulna, just to see it."

"For ******** sake," Leslie snapped, the roll of his eyes intense. "Talk about over ******** dramatic. You take a picture of it, too, for the memories?"

lines of fear and blame

Leslie obeyed, unmoved by the death in front of him. There was something in him that refused to budge on this: maybe it was the way she died, or the delivery method, or the intent-- but there was nothing in him but annoyance and a callous reaction.

What a waste of ******** time.

He handed the bag over, thick and black, and almost asked what happened to the dead, but decided against it, with how pissy everyone looked. They disconnected her from the heart monitor, taped her down, and shipped her out to wherever she went.

Sometimes, it wasn't too hard to remember that this place was supposed to be a military establishment. The infirmary seemed to be one of the few places where that sort of organized structure seemed to exist without too much questioning.

(Himself included, when it came down to it.)

Leslie didn't respond verbally, disappearing to make the fetch quest. He even offered to Sunny, whose only request was "coffee, black" without even a spared glance from her work.

When he returned, he had shoved two meals onto one tray, and clearly stuffed his hoodie pockets with a few pilfered snackbars and who knows what the hell else. The latter spoils, he didn't intend to share.

Coffee was delivered to Sunny first, of course.

"Here," Leslie said, setting it down on a counter nearby, full of standard fare: terrible french bread pizza, sides of vaguely vegetables, fries that were clearly half-eaten and Leslie wore no look of shame at all about it, and pasta smothered with a sauce that was sort of red, in the right light.

the less i know

He was engrossed in his phone as Leslie returned, typing quickly with a strange expression. Ten seconds after the tray had been dropped off, he set his phone aside on the table and automatically reached for the water bottle. When his fingers closed around something cold rather than the usual hot mug of coffee, a scowl started to form until Jack remembered that he hadn't actually asked for any; normally his coffee slaves just automatically added some even if he didn't specify. The scowl melted away into something duller.

"God," he mumbled as he uncapped the bottle and drank. He then took one of the pizza breads, grabbed a napkin, and started wiping it down of grease. "Italian. Great. Maybe I won't get food poisoning this time."

"Still rolling the ******** dice," Leslie bitched, continuing to eat the fries, because he was a healthy individual who believed in balanced meals of starch and grease and maybe cheese. The cheese, of course, being from a cup of nacho cheese that he'd snatched.

There wasn't a spare seat anywhere, so Leslie took his share of the food and sat on the ground, not giving a s**t if it was unclean. His feet hurt, from standing all day-- for some reason, running and training didn't wear him out nearly so much as dealing with people.

"Is it always this batshit ******** insane? Or do I just come on the days where everyone's gone ******** coocoo for cocoa puffs?"

(He thought of his own regret and grief, and how glad he'd been to have a room with a door and actual-walls, because they might have been thin but at least they wouldn't echo all of his sobs into the hall. At least his had ended when the night did.)

step one you say

"If you want to feel something," Jack said in a flat tone as he took items off Leslie's hands and got to work suturing what parts were healed enough, "go get the s**t kicked out of you in a spar. Because if people like you keep doing this, next time I swear I'll just take the scalpal and finish the job for you." It was empty talk, words just escaping him for the sake of venting more than actually threatening anything.

(As if he would go for something as banal as the ulna anyway. The heart was much more interesting.)

"Watch and learn, King, because I think I see about two or three other people who look like they're going to need stitches, and we need to clear them quick."

He answered each question individually. "No. Yes." With the pizzabread polished, he took a bite and did his best to ignore the charcoal bottom as he chewed. Food was better than no food, especially since they hadn't had much time to rest and recuperate even with the previous fifteen minute break.

"Some s**t's gone down," Jack said with a shrug. "Considering the emotions evoked, I'm going to take a stab and say it's going something to do with Legacies. I'll be ready for the bitching to begin about what new experiment backfired." People always seemed ready to suspect Lifers when it came to sudden events like that.

Not that they didn't have reason to, from what he understood about the past.

step one you say

"Sure man," the hunter replied with a tired, lazy shrug, "whatever you say."

Leslie crowed his neck, watching Jack work.

"Heheh. Jack be nimble, I guess, or some s**t. God damn how do you get them so tiny?"

He'd practised on a fruit or two, and the results had been near disastrous. Practice made perfect, or something, he guessed.

"The flying ******** is a Legacy?" To his credit, he looked legitimately curious. "Like the thingies at the end of Wonderland? Were you at that crazy ******** thing? Christ."

step one you say

"Lots of patience," Jack replied in a murmur, his eyes fixed on his work. "Lots of practice. And lots of patients." A corner of his lips curled up at his own wit.

(The tongue, he decided, the tongue would be the part he would work on first if the man came in like this again, because nothing was more disruptive to his good work than a smartass who didn't know how to hold it in check. It was an insult to evolution to allow lazy, uncaring breeds like this one to keep surviving anyway.)

"Life is about having steady hands, whatever you work on. If you can pick up anything at all here, that's it."

"Something like that. I don't have a lot of information myself." Just a sketchbook from Chel with sloppy handwriting and excited notes. "I wasn't able to participate in the festivities," Jack continued after another sip of water, "but I was told red and white queens were the main players, as well as something about ALICE?"

He eyed Leslie, expecting more information.
