This was enjoyable, Whistle decided. Perhaps it wasn't an experience he wanted to repeat soon, for it was tiring his legs rather more than he'd hoped, but...it was something he might try again. Next year, perhaps, if this ever had a reprise: he'd want to represent the Mothers' Club well.

And as soon as it had appeared beneath his feet, the gravel seemed to disintegrate away into a smoother, richer soil - but it was the sort of soil that carried with it large rocks as obstacles. Was he supposed to - ah, no, Sun realized. Well, they definitely weren't so large that he couldn't jump right over them rather than having to force himself to zig-zag around. So that he did.

It was a tiring practice, though, and Sun realized quickly that he shouldn't do it too much - it was more effective to make his way around the obstacles instead, even if it was less speedy. This was not a speed race, though; it was a test of endurance, and he'd do well to recall that.

And so he continued onwards. It seemed as though this particular hindrance would last for a while - it was probably the leg of the course intended to tire out most competitors. Well-designed, he thought, although again: it did seem as though the Tidewalkers preferred to adapt to the world around themselves, rather than adapting it to suit their needs. To each their own philosophy, though, Sun supposed. He himself was a builder through and through. Matope had created kimeti to make the swamp more perfect than it already was, he thought.

This was her chance, she believed, to truly prove herself, to Longstride, to Westward Bound, to the whole tribe. While she hadn't done anything to lower herself in their eyes, Shade's pride pushed her to shine in the eyes of her tribe. She stared ahead, ears pricked forward, awaiting her signal. And there it was! Without a moment of hesitation, she began, steadily plowing ahead on near-silent hoof-steps.
