"Ah, s-sorry," Oliver said quickly, looking away bashfully. He wasn't used to fondness, and he apologized as though unable to trust the tone of voice over the words themselves. He had lost his outright fear of Ian, and knew he was a nice guy who really did wear his heart on his sleeve, and yet... there was still that lingering doubt. The trainee wasn't sure which feeling to follow, but he did glance up briefly, as though searching for some clue as to how to behave.

"You could sit and keep me company, you know," came the dry answer to Oliver's unasked question, Ian still shoveling jello into his mouth like it was going out of style.

Oliver sat. He sat so fast it was almost like a puppy waiting on a treat. "Okay, uh... if you want I can stay..." For a minute he stared at the floor, then at the beeping machines. And then he asked in a timid, quiet voice, "I-it was bad, wasn't it...?" It was so soft, Ian might not have heard it over the sound of his own eating. Oliver wouldn't mind if he didn't get an answer, he was afraid to know what was in store for him later.

Ian opened his mouth to say something and then promptly closed it again. A sigh escaped instead, Ian lowering the cup of jello and the spoon slowly until they were resting in his lap. He gave Oliver an almost pitying look, his eyes resting on the younger hunter.
"Yeah," he said quietly. "Yeah, it was bad."

"I-I'm sorry," the kid stammered, staring down at his hands. He sniffed. And then the tears were threatening to return, no matter how determinedly he rubbed them away. His sleeves were still damp from his earlier crying spell. In an attempt to forestall the tears he bit down on one knuckle, turning his face away from the bed. No, he was not going to do this in front of Ian again!

"Oliver," said Ian warningly. "Don't start on me now, kid, I told you. I'll be fine. You've gotta stop assuming the worst, okay? Here - " He reached for one of the jello cups and thrust it towards Oliver with bruised fingers, his eyebrows raised.
"Eat one of these. It's physically impossible to be sad while eating jello."

"S-sorry..." He squeaked again, the effort of holding back tears evident in his voice. Seeing Ian holding out the jello cup in those burned hands nearly set him off all over again, but he took the cup with desperate determination and ripped the top off. And then he blinked at it for a second, the shiny red dessert just sitting there peacefully in front of him. "Wha- what d-do I eat it with?" He finally asked, his words broken up by miserable hiccups.

There was a long pause in which Ian just looked at Oliver and then looked down at the only spoon in the room, which happened to be the one currently in Ian's own cup of wiggly jello.
"Drink it?" Ian suggested helpfully.

His eyes might have been shiny with unshed tears, but the look Oliver gave Ian was sheer skepticism. Ian's suggestion had not been very helpful at all. The kid hiccuped again, and slid into a somewhat slouched position. "Y-you can't drink a solid..." He muttered to himself, staring at the jello.
