You cannot counter a spell that is already being countered. That is why there is a stack, and why the last-in, first-out resoloution rule is in place.

Oh, but you can.

Let's pretend person A plays a particularily nasty spell, that you don't want to deal with. You counter it with Absorb. Now, I'm equally against the spell, but don't want to see you counter and gain three life, so I play a good ol' Counterspell, targetting the original spell. The stack now looks like this:

My Counterspell - Target (Nasty Card)
Your Absord - Target (Nasty Card)
Nasty Card

Now that everyone has again passed priority after my spell, it resolves and the stack looks like this:

Your Absorb - Target (Nasty Card)

Your Absorb is now trying to counter a spell that no longer exists on the stack because, after Counterspell resolves it takes the Nasty Card off the stack. Your Absorb is then countered (by rules) for lacking a target, and that's the end of that story. Don't expect a situation like this to come up much, if ever; hardly anyone would need to counter a coutner, wasting a good counter (unless saving their spell).

However, I must say my new all-time favourite counter card is...

... Voidslime!

It is horrifically powerful, having the ability to counter anything, save static and state-based abilities (that aren't triggered).

It is a force to be reckon'd with no matter what you may be playing with.

these four are tied for first place(in my opinion):
Counterspell, Absorb, Undermine, and Rewind

I have to agree that, strictly speaking, Counterspell is the "best" counterspell - the most efficient one out there.

However, my personal favorite is Quash, even though it is only for instants or sorceries. I also like Absorb, Undermine, and Suffocating Blast.

Celestia Whitesword
For the formats it's legal in, it's definetely all about the all-purpose original Counterspell. 3nodding
Barring that, Mana Leak and such are pretty good.

I persoanlly think rune snag will replace mana leak in any deck that has to choose between the two of them.

I mean com on, the only sang that is cheeper to un-counterfy isthe first one, andweall know that the first snag of leak will probably hit on turn 2 or 3 when they of 1 or no mana open.

After that it just gets more and more expensive.

what about coidslimje people?

Counter everything and anything that is possibly counterable in the game?

I'll pay and extra G for that thank you.

Though in type one, one would think that stiffle and shadow of doubt would be the best picks as they stop the combo in it;s tracks, either by stoping searching in response to intuition of to a tutor, or by stifling the storm ability.

A huge counter fan in Magic here, so I couldn't resist. whee

I'd say out of all of the counter cards ever printed, there hasn't been one to really disappoint, although there are a couple not worth mentioning. It's pretty hard but I have narrowed it down to my top three...

Counterspell Top 3

3. Voidslime: It was released just a set ago and it's already on the third spot, now that's a counterspell. Not only was this a spell a long time coming, but it just fits so well into both colors and it's cost is perfect, you couldn't have asked for more. I think it may be because, I myself am a huge Simic fan and a fan of both colors that I'm giving this the third spot over some really honorable mentions like Dissipate and/or Mana Drain. Not only does this card help in U/G decks but it can also be a great hand in tri-color decks or even full spectrum decks. A card that gets the same reviews in different format, making it a solid choice for counters. It's only downside being the fact that you can play it in a mono blue control deck, bummer.

2. Force of Will: By now, you can already guess which counter made the number one spot if you see the great Force of Will here in number 2. Either way this card changed everything and made blue more dominant that it already was back in the day and it has stayed that way through out the years. If your playing type 1 and your playing blue, you need four of these and it's not a suggestion, it's a must. Everyone in type 1 running blue, will be running four FOW. Magic in the years have tried to make cards similar if not better than FOW like Miscalculation, but till this day nothing compares when your talking about alternative pay counterspells. It's hard cast is a beefy 3UU, but no one will ever hard cast this thing, ever. A card that allows blue players to tap all of their mana without fear has got to be one of the best cards in Magic history.

1. Counterspell: In life, one should never forget their roots and that's why I honor Counterspell as being the greatest counter in the game of Magic. Say what you will, but without this card there would be no FOW or Mana Drain or anything for that matter. And just think of about how insane this card was back when Magic was starting, an opponent would have waited six turns and six lands till they could cast that Force of Nature and all you needed was two blue mana to say, no. And not only to big creatures, but to anything except lands and if you make a list, that's a lot. Cards needed to be made "uncounterable" just because of Counterspell. This is the card that made the entire mana wheel envy of blue, and it's ability to counter.

Well that's my point of view on the topic, I hope you enjoyed my choices and reasons. And remember to keep that two blue mana untapped, cause you never know.

Voidslime, for ability to counter damn near anything. I might get one to put in my Azorius just so I can use it with Kaho. Add Minamo to possibly pull off two Voidslimes using Kaho.

I do like Counterspell VERY Much, so It gets my #1 vote.

Now, call me whatever name you want, but my #2 favorite is Syncopate.
(X) (U) Counter Target spell, if spell is countered in this way, it is removed from the game.

Here, where I am, I'm forced to remove stuff from the game, meaning I HAVE to use Steamclaw in my Artifact Deck. It doesn't have that much room for all of the Pretty Countering spells, so, I have to make due. Thus, i've acquired an affinity for Syncopate.

If you mock the Syncopate, I shall Hunt you down, and show you it's true power.
(meaning Infinite Mana Combo plus that little (X) on the card.)

I'd say Force of Will due to the ability of single-handedly stopping first turn combos. In sealed or cube I can see Counterspell being more useful, but in Legacy I'd say Force of Will takes the crown.
Of course Mana Drain would be my second choice, and actually Desertion would be my third(I play more cube than anything, and in that format this card is awesome).

meh, FoW is fine and good and all that, but i prefer to abuse my counterspells via Isochron Scepter, which means that my fav. is Counterspell, the original. besides, no one else out here have Isochron Scepter, thus causing my deck to never lose in 2 out of 3
